Dear Parents and Students,

We understand that some families may initially feel anxious about this move back to classroom

teaching and learning. This Parent and Student Guide has been created based upon the best current

advice provided by the Victorian Government and the Department of Health and Human Services.

Further updates will be provided as they become available.

Thank you for your continued support and patience during this challenging time. We look forward to

welcoming our students back on-site.

TRANSITION BACK TO SCHOOL

Following advice from the Victorian Chief Health Officer and as announced by the Victorian

Government, Victorian Government schools will begin a transition back to on-site schooling for

students. The core elements of this approach are:

• A staged return for students commencing Tuesday 26 May 2020.

• All school staff to work from the school site from Monday 25 May 2020. The only exceptions

for on-site attendance will be for some staff in identified risk categories based on medical

advice. These will be determined in accordance with directions provided by the Department

of Health and Human Services (DHHS) and with approval from the College Principal.

• Enhanced hygiene practices and cleaning on school sites.

• Return of all students for on-site schooling at government schools from Tuesday 9 June 2020.

The staged return will be as follows:

• VCE Year 11 and 12 students (and Year 10 students undertaking VCE studies) on-site from

Tuesday 26 May 2020. If travelling home via public transport is a limiting factor, Year 10

students undertaking a VCE subject may remain on-site to complete their remote learning

program. These students will be working out of the Library Learning Centre.

• Students in Years 7 to 10 will continue the Online Learning program from home until Friday 5

June 2020.

• The on-site Online Learning program will continue to be provided for vulnerable students in

Years 7 to 10 and those who are not able to be supervised at home and for whom no other

arrangements can be made.

The Australian Health Protection Principal Committee (AHPPC) has advised that a ‘venue density rule’

of no more than one person per four square metres is not appropriate or practical in classrooms or

corridors, nor maintaining 1.5 metres between students during classroom activities. Therefore, the

previously established ratio of 10 students per class is no longer required in schools.

To support all College staff members preparing for the transition back to school, Monday 25 May 2020

will be a pupil-free day. Arrangements for the day are outlined below.

STUDENT ATTENDANCE

All students in the year levels returning to on-site schooling are expected to attend school. Schools

are not expected to provide remote Online Learning where parents elect to keep these students at

home, except where this is based on medical advice.

At Bentleigh Secondary College, this means if a parent or carer chooses to keep their child/children

home after their year level has returned to on-site schooling, we will no longer support their learning

Page 3: Dear Parents and Students, · Dear Parents and Students, We understand that some families may initially feel anxious about this move back to classroom teaching and learning. This

from home. This does not apply to children who need to be absent for health or medical reasons. The

Chief Health Officer’s advice states those who live with elderly or chronically ill relatives are no longer

able to use this as a reason to work from home. Arrangements for those families will be managed by

Marc Koenig and Arun Karunaratne and (Assistant Principals: Student Engagement and Wellbeing). An

appropriate plan will be devised and communicated with staff.

CONTINUED SUPPORT FOR ALL STUDENTS DUE TO STAFF ABSENCE

Staff will be required to attend for duty in accordance with normal arrangements making necessary

adjustments to support physical distancing between adults. As with other members of the

community, teachers and other school staff may be at greater risk of more serious illness if they

contract coronavirus (COVID-19) if they are:

• aged 70 years and older.

• aged 65 years and older and with chronic medical conditions.

• of any age and have a compromised immune system.

• Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander and are aged over 50 years and with one or more chronic

medical conditions.

In such cases, the teacher will continue to teach via the Online Learning program and a CRT will be in

the class to support the learning. In addition, English Tutors have been assigned to help Year 12 English

students in Term 2. They are able to assist students in preparation for the exams in November.

SCHOOL HEALTH AND SAFETY MEASURES

Victoria’s return to on-site school attendance is based on the advice of the Victorian Chief Health

Officer. The health and safety advice indicates that schools should consider a variety of strategies to

support physical distancing, particularly among adults, and good hygiene practices to reduce the risk

of coronavirus (COVID-19) transmission.

All staff will be responsible for their own social distancing and out-of-classroom social distancing,

wherever students congregate. Within classrooms it is the responsibility of the class teacher to

implement social distancing in as much as the classroom environment can be. To minimise the risks

the school has:

• Placed signage in all classrooms and buildings including floor decals to remind people how to

socially distance.

• Organised Sanitiser Station for each entrance point to a building.

• Established a supplementary staff room so that during breaks, staff are able to maintain social

distancing:

➢ A33 will become another lunch preparation area and staff are advised to pack cold lunches

where practice rather than congregate around the toasters.

➢ Break out rooms to be used by staff e.g. da Vinci Upstairs Study Area and Library Classroom.

Access to the College Site

Schools have been advised to undertake steps to reduce the number of adults on-site, as well as those

congregating outside their schools at any given time.

The College will be accessible to those delivering or supporting essential school services and

operations including:

• College staff and students

• Contractors, cleaners and maintenance workers

• Authorised visitors (SEIL/DET)

• Parents are not permitted on-site, unless authorised by the College.

• The College’s entry and exit points will be monitored to minimise the risk of creating large

congregations. For this reason the following arrangements have been made:

➢ Additional staff will be rostered on before and after school yard duty for the remainder

of Term 2.

Page 6: Dear Parents and Students, · Dear Parents and Students, We understand that some families may initially feel anxious about this move back to classroom teaching and learning. This

6

➢ Families will be reminded that students are not to be on-site prior to the staggered times

of 8:30am (Senior School) and 8:40am (Middle School)

➢ Families will be asked to avoid or minimise time in or around the College grounds/streets.

➢ Families will need to plan for and adapt to altered arrangements to arrive at specified

times.

➢ Students arriving on-site are able to access any gate.

• Years 7/8 will be dismissed early at recess and lunch to minimise rush to canteen and classes

will cease learning at different times prior to the scheduled departure time to support a safe

and orderly exit. The following exit points will be used by the students:

➢ Years 7/8 students dismissed at 2:50pm. The period 6 teacher will escort the class to the

lockers and then direct them to the Margareta Street gate (unless they have a bike). Staff

will remain on duty with their students in and around Year 7 Precinct to minimise noise

disruption until 3:10pm.

➢ Years 9/10 students will be dismissed at 3:00pm and can use any gate. The period 6

teacher will escort the class to the piazza and remain on duty in that area to minimise

noise disruption until 3:10pm.

➢ Years 11 /12 students will be dismissed at 3:10pm and can use any gate.

• Activities that involve on-site attendance by students from different educational institutions

(e.g. interschool sport or interschool debating) will not take place. Exemption Brighton

Secondary College shared classes.

Student Restrictions

Social distancing for students at school does not apply. “While the Chief Health Officer has advised

that students will not be required to maintain physical distancing at school , there will be a number

of important changes to our school operations, consistent with health advice …” The school will

encourage students to:

• Not to use taps for drinking. The school has arranged for troughs to be converted to water

filling stations.

• To bring their own bottles for refilling as well as their own sanitisers.

• Observe social-distancing of 1.5 metres if practical.

• Not engage in contact activities or activities where contact is likely (e.g. Soccer is one such

activity).

• All down ball is banned in the piazza.

• Zones will be created for each Year Level.

OTHER HEALTH AND SAFETY MEASURES

• School Equipment cannot be shared (pencils, rulers, protective garments etc), however some

items it is not practical to not share (like safety glasses or power tools in wood). Students will

be encouraged to practise hand hygiene before and after use , as well as clean any shared

items used with disinfectant wipes.

• The College’s mobile phone policy remains in place. Staff and students are reminded to clean

their phones regularly and download the COVID SAFE app.

• Social distancing of 1.5 metres between adults continues to be encouraged. To support this,

staff may consider using spaces such as the da Vinci breakout spaces, vacant meeting rooms,

Main Admin staffrooms and vacant classrooms.

• The movement of visitors through the Main Administration reception areas will be carefully

managed, complemented with clear signage and access to sanitiser.

Page 7: Dear Parents and Students, · Dear Parents and Students, We understand that some families may initially feel anxious about this move back to classroom teaching and learning. This

7

• There will be strict access restrictions to the Main Administration and Sub School work offices.

• Outdoor facilities are preferred for the purpose of physical education and recreational play.

Where indoor facilities are used, the number of students will be limited to no more than one

classes per gymnasium or PAC.

• Non-contact sports should be encouraged. Hand hygiene must be practised before and after

use of any sporting equipment.

• The Bentleigh Weights Room is unavailable for student use until further notice.

• The library is closed until further notice. No book borrowing etc. All books have been covered.

Hygiene/PPE

Everyone can protect themselves and prevent the spread of coronavirus (COVID-19) by continuing

effective hand hygiene. Enhanced hygiene measures should continue during the return to on-site

teaching and learning.

• All staff and students should undertake regular hand hygiene, particularly on arrival to school,

before and after eating, after blowing their nose, coughing, sneezing or using the toilet. This

should be directed by staff where required.

• All students will be guided in regular hand-washing- not just after toilet breaks but before and

after recess and lunch breaks, too. Increase signage around the school.

• Hand sanitiser will be available in all classrooms (via teacher). A 500ml bottle has been

provided for teachers to ensure students are sanitising regularly. We have ordered Tork

sanitisers dispensers to be placed in every classroom and open learning spaces. These will be

installed as soon as possible.

• Sanitisers Stations have been placed in all entry and exit points e.g. General Office; Library; A

Block, VCE, PE Foyer; da Vinci Foyer.

• Students/Students who bring personal protective equipment from home will be encouraged

to make use of it. It is not recommended on the advice of the Victorian Chief Health Officer.

• Supplementary cleaning of taps, door handles and communally used surfaces will be carried

out during school days. This will be undertaken by Spotless Cleaning Services and is additional

to the normal cleaning.

• If any confirmed cases of Covid19 are identified amongst the student or staff cohorts at the

school, that or those persons will be isolated immediately, the relevant authorities notified

ASAP, and the school will be locked-down at the end of that school day for deep cleaning. It

will not re-open until declared “safe” by a person qualified to so declare.

• Where relevant, the highest hygiene practices amongst food handlers where these services

are operating, as per the DET Safe Food Handling policy will be exercised. Sharing of food

should not occur.

• Hygiene requirements including handwashing must continue to be practised. Soap will be

available for staff and students in all toilet/washroom facilities.

• Additional hand sanitiser will be available on-site in the following areas:

• At entrance doors to all buildings via Sanitiser Stations

• Main Administration Reception Area and Staffrooms

• Maintenance Office

• Extended and increased cleaning arrangements have been introduced and will

continue. This involves progressive cleaning throughout the day to ensure that risks

of transmission are reduced for high-touch surfaces.

PROVISION OF ROUTINE CARE AND FIRST AID

Physical distancing is not practical when providing direct care. In this situation standard precautions,

including hand hygiene, are important for infection control.

The First Aid Officer will be located in the First Aid Office at all times and available to check students

and send them home immediately. The school has two recently purchased two laser thermometers

to check students, if required and standard precautions are implemented when coming into contact

with someone for the purpose of providing routine care and/or assistance. Measures include:

• Standard precautions as per the DET Infectious Disease policy and related policies are adopted

when providing first aid. For example, the use gloves and apron when dealing with blood or

body fluids/substances.

• Always wash hands with soap and water or use a hand sanitiser before and after performing

routine care or first aid.

• Additional Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), for example face masks, is not required to

provide routine care or first aid for students who are well, unless such precautions are usually

adopted in the routine care of an individual student.

• All school staff have had access to voluntary prioritised coronavirus (COVID-19) testing.

Participation in testing was entirely voluntary, including those who are asymptomatic.

• Staff have been reminded that if they are feeling unwell with flu-like symptoms – even mild

symptoms - they should seek a health check if they are at school when they begin to feel

unwell. If at home they should not attend school if feeling unwell.

• If the First Aid Officer declares a child “ill” following a presentation during the day that child

will be immediately sent home or isolated for the remainder of the day.

• Students with Immunodeficiency or immunocompromise or who have a chronic health

condition need to seek medical advice.

MENTAL HEALTH AND WELLBEING

DET remains committed to supporting the mental health and wellbeing of all staff and continues to

provide its full suite of services. This includes services and resources aimed at addressing individual

needs, as well as tools and supports to help guide staff. Specific examples include:

• For principal class employees: Proactive Wellbeing Supervision service which has been

extended to include assistant principals during 2020; the Early Intervention Program for more

intensive support; and all other Principal Health and Wellbeing services

• For all staff: Personalised over-the-phone and video counselling through the Employee

Assistance Program

• For all staff and all people managers: Wellbeing Webinars cover a range of relevant topics for

the current situation for all staff and people managers.

A comprehensive list of supports and services can be found on the COVID-19 Health, Safety and

Wellbeing Support for Schools page.

Managing a Suspected or Confirmed Case of Coronavirus (COVID-19)

DET has procedures in place with the Department of Health and Human Services to manage suspected

or confirmed cases of coronavirus (COVID-19) in schools. The College Principal will activate the

established procedures if a student or staff member:

• is a confirmed case.

• has been in close contact with a confirmed case.

DHHS defines ‘close contact’ as someone who has either:

• had at least 15 minutes of face-to-face contact with a confirmed case of COVID-19.

• shared a closed space for more than two hours with someone who is a confirmed case.

Unless the College has a student or staff member in one of the two above categories, there is no need

to take further action. A temporary school closure can only occur at the direction of the Regional

Director. If a school has a confirmed case of coronavirus (COVID-19), the Department will work with

the school to undertake a deep clean and the school will be made operational as soon as possible.

PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT

All staff are scheduled to undertake Professional Practice Days (PPD) on 5 June. This will minimise

disruptions to classes.

MEETINGS WITH PARENTS/CARERS AND EXTERNAL PROVIDERS

Attendance on site by non-essential visitors and parents will be limited. Where possible, staff are

required to conduct meetings virtually or by phone. In extenuating circumstances face -to-face

meetings will be organised by a member of the Principal Class Team. Visitors to school grounds should

be limited to those delivering or supporting essential school services and operations (e.g. student

health and wellbeing services, visiting DET teachers, maintenance workers).

ACCESS TO DEVICES

Due to the Bentleigh BYOD device program, all staff and students have access and/or been provided

with to mobile devices/dongles for the remainder of Term 2.

ONLINE LEARNING PROTOCOLS

For the remaining remote learning period students are reminded to continue following the protocols

outlined in the Online Learning Student Guide. Staff will continue to use Compass and Microsoft

Teams.

All staff will continue the practice of placing lessons on Compass for all classes. Parents should

continue to be involved in their child’s learning.

ONLINE LEARNING AND TRANSITION BACK

When students begin to return to school there will be a period when some struggle to settle back at

school. Some will be over excited to see their friends and others will be distant. The social and

emotional health of students will be given a high priority and I ask that you be alert to identify students

who may need support. Given that there will be an urgent need for intensive catch-up teaching when

students do return to school, the optimum situation would be that the “right teacher is with the right

class”. If there are any factors that mitigate against that situation we will try to maintain established

class teacher relationships by employing CRTs to replace absent teachers rather than “amalgamating

classes”.

Page 10: Dear Parents and Students, · Dear Parents and Students, We understand that some families may initially feel anxious about this move back to classroom teaching and learning. This

ONLINE ASSESSMENTS

During Week 8 and 9 of this term we will be conducting Online Assessments. The format of these

Online Assessments are different to past couple of years. The Online Assessment will start Wednesday

3 June 2020.

• 7-9 Online Assessment: Maths and English only, 5-10 minutes reading, 60 minutes to “write”

and preferably multiple choice.

• 10 Online Assessment: Maths, Science and English only, 5-10 minutes reading, 60 minutes to

“write” and preferably multiple choice or another format that is very simple to mark.

• Year 11 Unit 1 Online Assessment: 5-10 minutes reading, 60 minutes to “write”, to be run in

class, the format of this (i.e. the style of questions) is up to the teacher.

• Year 12 Unit 3 Online Assessment are recommended but should be run in class time. It is up

to the year 12 teacher to make the decision as to how and when these happen. These are not

reportable.

• Online Assessment to be distributed on Microsoft Forms (If you are unsure of creating an MS

Form, click (press Ctrl + HERE)

Reporting

• Online Assessment are reportable and should not be labelled as a CAT, but as “Semester 1

Online Assessment” or “Unit 1 Online Assessment”.

• Online Assessment should include a performance descriptor and Victorian curriculum level.

• Semester Reports open on Friday of Week 9 (12 June) and last day of “Online Assessment”.

• Reports close on Monday of Week 11 (22 June)

Online Assessment Schedule

Page 11: Dear Parents and Students, · Dear Parents and Students, We understand that some families may initially feel anxious about this move back to classroom teaching and learning. This

11

Please note all assessments from 3 June to 5 June will be at home via the Online Platform. There will

be NO CLASSES and ALL STUDENTS HAVE ONLINE ASSESSMENTS. The only exception is Year 12’s

attending Practise GAT.

Practise GAT

All Year 12’s will attend school for the practice GAT on 5 June during period 1 and 2. The practise GAT

will be marked by a VCAA assessor, providing invaluable feedback. Additional revision has been

scheduled to demonstrate to students how to tackle the GAT Writing Component. WHY? The GAT is

more important this year, than any other year in terms of statistical moderation. The practise GAT is

compulsory for ALL Year 12 students.

HELPDESK

As we return to onsite learning we would like to ask members of the community to continue to log all

ICT issues through our helpdesk at [email protected]

Please do not attend the ICT office for technical assistance as all students will be turned away and

asked to place their request through our helpdesk.

Once the helpdesk request is placed, a member of the ICT team will be in touch to schedule an

appointment, if required, to ensure social distancing rules are abided by. We ask that you attend your

appointment alone and at the scheduled time. Many issues will be able to be solved remotely.

A reminder that no parents will be allowed to visit the ICT office in line with the Department of

Education recommendations and all communication with ICT must be done through the helpdesk or

the General Office.

We thank you for your continued support and understanding.
