It is part of Schola’s mission to extend the role of Art beyond that of its own intrinsic value, leveraging it for bringing visibility and expansive thinking to issues of human significance. The areas of social significance selected for full-season thematic exploration are supported by advisory task force activity and podcast promotion.

A message from Artistic Director and Founder, Dr. Deborah Simpkin King

Dear Music Lover,

Making the world “safe for democracy” was the presidential declaration upon entering the War to End All Wars. Today, we take a look at how well that worked out – along with other social realities of post-War America. Throughout this Armistice preparation season, in which we have been exploring the impact of military conflict, we continue to be humbled by the gratitude expressed by so many veterans for honoring their service – some of whom had not, prior to this interaction, publicly acknowledged this life-changing work. It is we who are grateful, and deeply moved. In November, we walked through the WWI story of the Rudyard Kipling family, and their loss of son John, through the magnificent Muehleisen oratorio, But Who Shall Return Us Our Children? A Kipling Passion. In our second (March) concert, Where Poppies Grow, the universality of the war experience, regardless of battle lines, was the focus.* In our conviction that lessons learned from those with deep, often difficult life experiences are crucial to elevating our consciousness as a human species – indeed, to our survival as a civilization! - we will be drawing upon the marvelous work of the Veterans History Project (Library of Congress and U.S. Military Academy at West Point repositories). November 2019’s concerts both bring our When the War is Over series to a dramatic conclusion on the exact centennial anniversary of the WWI Armistice, and launch our new focus on issues of ageing. Hearing elderly veterans speak of their wartime experience is both significant and memorable. For all of the thoughtful mission behind every note sung by Ember artists, these singers know how to party, as well! Our annual gala (Friday, June 8th, at the stunning Highlawn Pavilion overlooking the Manhattan skyline) is a dressy occasion to which you’ll be proud to bring someone you want to impress! And it is a really fun way to support Ember’s art with a mission. If you haven’t yet purchased your tickets, you can do so right now before the concert begins at EmberEnsemble.org. See you there!

In service of meaningful Art,

*All of Ember’s concerts are live-streamed and live permanently on Ember’s Facebook page.

Deborah Simpkin King, PhD, is a visionary conductor, new music advocate and educator who deeply believes in the power of music to affect the human spirit and enrich communities. Recognized for her innovative choral programming that incorporates new ways of making music more accessible, Dr. King’s passion for the human element in all music is what informs every aspect of her work as an artist and leader in the music industry.

Dr. King is the Founder and Artistic Director of Ember and of its parent organization, Schola Cantorum on Hudson (Schola), based in New York City and northern New Jersey. She provides the ensemble’s creative programming, an eclectic mix of new music with full-season social thematic focus. Under her stewardship, Ember has acquired a devoted and growing following that has come to expect the unexpected from the group’s dynamic performances.

Schola is also the parent organization of Dr. King’s renowned brainchild, PROJECT : ENCORE™, an international advocacy initiative that promotes post-premiere performances of new music. She is well known for her many premiere and post-premiere ("encore") performances of new choral music.

Dr. King is the Director of Music at Crescent Avenue Presbyterian Church, Plainfield, NJ, and Artistic Director of the Crescent Concerts Series, a multi-disciplinary presentation of vocal, instrumental, choral and orchestral music events for the residents of Plainfield and the surrounding communities. In this capacity she conducts the Crescent Choral Society, the Chancel Choir and the Crescent Singers.

A leader in the choral community, Dr. King serves as Chair of the New York Choral Consortium (NYCC) and the Co-Coordinator of the NJ-ACDA HS Choral Festival, having served as Coordinator since 1994. She is regularly engaged as a guest conductor, currently working as a conductor at Lincoln Center’s Mostly Mozart Festival on a John Luther Adams premiere in August; also looking forward to a guest conducting residency at the Tlaxala Festiva Coro in Mexico in November.

Welcome Matthew Oden, Ember’s new Collaborative Accompanist!

A native of San Diego, Matthew graduated from the University of Southern California, and has since performed and toured extensively in the worlds of both classical and popular music. He has appeared as accompanist for choirs and vocalists, and has worked as Musical Director in theaters and schools around Los Angeles and New York. An enthusiast of early-American jazz and ragtime, he entertains regularly. Matthew is currently studying composition and continuing to develop his classical repertoire as a pianist.

Those singing today’s concert represent approximately half of the auditioned singers in the Ember Family. Each concert is uniquely balanced around the needs of the music and singer availability.

Curious about Ember singing membership?

Ember membership is a mix of singers who are active professionals and receive a stipend for their work; active professionals who donate their time and talent to the Ember mission; and deeply experienced avocational singers. All adhere to the same audition requirement, rehearsal schedule and high artistic bar. All are drawn to Ember by a love of artistic finesse and expression, of working with active composers, of music with a social mission. Do you read music? Do you have vocal training and choral experience? Are you drawn to new music and a wide range of musical expression? Do you seek a singing family with which to grow and experience life in full color?

Yes? Talk with an Ember artist after the concert.

Not a singer, but want to be part of the Ember Family?

It takes a village of committed individuals to support the artistic and social mission of Ember and its parent choral arts organization, Schola Cantorum on Hudson. Board members and committee members work directly with artistic leadership in planning, supporting and producing every concert, educational activity and new music initiative. Regardless of your background, we welcome your expression of interest and your skills and talents that could help support the various promotional, operational, financial and developmental aspects of Ember’s mission of meaningful artistic impact.

Please feel free to let us know of your interest by speaking to us after the concert, or by writing to [email protected].

Schola Choral Arts and YOU?

Our commitment is to support your meaningful interaction at joyful competence.

Ember Veterans Task Force

A special task force of veterans was formed in the summer of 2017 to work with Ember in its efforts to connect with veterans in ways that would be of meaning. We are grateful for their inspiring leadership. SFC (Ret.) Joseph F. Dunphy. US Army Signal Corps. Began as Radio Teletype Operator, various signal positions in support of armor at battalion, division and Corps levels. Called out of retirement briefly to respond to 9-11-2001 attack. Radio volunteer in support of the Red Cross. Gene Gitelson served in the US Army as a Combat Infantry Lieutenant in Vietnam for the 1st Infantry Division – the “Big Red One” from 1966-67. He led an Infantry Platoon conducting patrols in the jungles and rice paddies as well as commanding helicopter assaults into “hot” LZs. The US Military Academy at West Point produced an oral history of his personal and leadership experiences in Vietnam: “The Vietnam War as a Crucible for Leadership”. John L Smith was a Corporal United States Army Paratrooper. He is a Vietnam Veteran, Combat Wounded, Purple Heart Recipient, Air Medal Flights in Combat Zones. His background is in law enforcement and criminal justice. Thomas P. Walsh, Ed. D. studied Oceanography and Meteorology at the SUNY Maritime College, graduating in 1975. He was commissioned an ensign in the US Naval Reserve and sailed as a merchant marine officer. He retired in 1986 as a lieutenant in the Naval Reserve. Ember annually weaves a full season of concert activity around issues we believe warrant expansive visibility and thought, seeking to open hearts and minds to additional exploration. Each year, as a new social focus is selected for the season, Ember establishes a task force of individuals interested in working with us to broaden the impact of our full-season mission within the community. Next season’s theme:

Coming of Age Celebrating, honoring, acknowledging (sometimes bemoaning) the ageing process, in our citizenry that is heavily weighted to individuals over the “retirement age” of 65.

Honuer L’Amerique The mighty American nation We welcome as comrades in arms, We honour the step they have taken In despite of fears and alarms. ‘Twas in the great days of our hist’ry This grand alliance was begun, And now ‘gainst the thrice-cursed Hun We march together on to vict’ry.

Refrain Beneath the flags now so proudly united, We’ll battle on to set the nations free Till vict’ry’s won and all our wrongs are

righted, We’ll fight for Right and for our liberty. He is there! Fifteen years ago today A little Yankee, little yankee boy Marched beside his granddaddy In the decoration day parade The village band would play those old war

tunes, And the G.A.R. would shout, “Hip Hip Hooray!” in the same old way, As it sounded on the old camp ground.

Chorus That boy has sailed o’er the ocean, He is there, he is there, he is there. He’s fighting for the right, But when it comes to might, He is there, he is there, he is there. As the Allies beat up all the warlords! He’ll be there, he’ll be there, and then the world will shout the Battle cry

of Freedom Tenting on a new camp ground.

Fifteen years ago today A little Yankee, with a German name Heard the tale of “forty-eight” Why his Granddaddy joined Uncle Sam, His fathers fought that medieval stuff and

he will fight it now, “Hip Hip Hooray! this is the day,” When he’ll finish up that aged job.

Chorus

There’s a time in ev’ry life, When it’s do or die, and our Yankee boy Does his bit that we may live, In a world where all may have a “say”. He’s conscious always of his country’s aim

which is Liberty for all “Hip Hip Hooray! is all he’ll say, As he marches to the Flanders front.

Chorus How Ya Gonna Keep ‘Em Down On The Farm? (After They’ve Seen Paree) “Reuben, Reuben, I’ve been thinking,” Said his wifey dear; “Now that all if peaceful and calm, The boys will soon be back on the farm.”

Mister Reuben started winking, And slowly rubbed his chin; He pulled his chair up close to mother, And he asked her with a grin:

Chorus “How ya gonna keep ‘em down on the farm, after they’ve seen Paree? How ya gonna keep ‘em away from

Broadway, Jazzin’ a roun’, And paintin’ the town? How ya gonna keep ‘em away from harm? That’s a mystery. They’ll never want to see a rake or plow, And who the deuce can parley vous a cow? How ya gonna keep ‘em down on the farm, After they’ve seen Paree?”

“Reuben, “Reuben, you’re mistaken,” said his wifey dear: “Once a farmer, always a jay; And farmers always stick to the hay.” “Mother Reuben, I’m not fakin’, Tho’ you may think it strange; But wine and women play the mischief With a boy who’s loose with change.

Chorus

Come Sunday Come Sunday, that’s the day. I believe that God put sun and moon up in

the sky. I don’t mind the gray skies ‘Cause they’re just clouds passing by.

Lord, dear Lord above God Almighty God of Love,

Please look down and see my people through.

I believe God is now, was then, and always will be.

With God’s blessing, we can make it thro’ eternity.

Lord, dear Lord above God Almighty, God of Love,

Please look down and see my people through.

Little David, Play on Your Harp Refrain Little David, play on your harp, Hallelu,

Hallelu, Little David, Play on your harp, Hallelu

Little David was a shepherd boy, He killed Goliath and shouted for joy.

Refrain

Old Joshua was the son of Nun, He never would quit ‘til his work was done.

David played, he danced and sang All day ‘til the heavens rang. Singin’ songs of joy and praise, David played his harp for the rest of his

days.

Refrain Take the A Train You must take the A Train to go to Sugar

Hill way up in Harlem. If you miss the A Train you’ll find you

missed the quickest way to Harlem.

Take your baby subway ridin’ That’s where romance may be hidin’.

You must take the A Train to go to Sugar Hill way up in Harlem.

I Got Rhythm I got rhythm, I got music, I got my man Who could ask for anything more? I got daisies, in green pastures, I got my

man Who could ask for anything more?

Refrain Old Man Trouble, I don’t mind him, You won’t find him ‘round my door.

I got starlight, I got sweet dreams, I got my man

Who could ask for anything more?

I got rhythm, I got music, I got my man Who could ask for anything more? I got daisies, in green pastures, I got my

man Who could ask for anything more?

Refrain

I got starlight, I got sweet dreams, I got my mean

Who could ask for anything more? Fascinating Rhythm Got a little rhythm, a rhythm, a rhythm,

that pit-a-pats in my brain. So darn persistent, the day isn’t distant When it will drive me insane. Comes in the morning without any warning And hangs around all day. I’ll have to sneak up to it, Someday and speak up to it. I hope it listens when I say,

Fascinating rhythm you’ve got me on the go!

Fascinating rhythm I’m all a-quiver. What a mess you’re making? The neighbors want to know why I’m always

shaking just like a fliver. Each morning I get up with the sun, Start a hopping, never stopping to find at

night, no work has been done.

I know that once it didn’t matter, but now you’re doing wrong.

When you start to patter, I’m so unhappy. Won’t you take the day off? Decide to run along somewhere far away off

and make it snappy. Oh, how I long to be the man I used to be. Fascinating rhythm, oh won’t you stop

picking on me! The Dream Keeper

1. The Dream Keeper Bring me all of your dreams, You dreamers, bring me all of your heart

melodies That I may wrap them in a blue cloud cloth Away from the too rough fingers of the

world. Bring me all of your dreams.

4. Song Refrain Lovely, oh, lovely, dark and lonely one, Bare your bosom to the sun.

Do not be afraid of light, You who are a child of night.

Refrain

Open wide your arms to life, Whirl in the wind of pain and strife,

Refrain

Face the wall with the dark closed gate, Face the wall and beat, beat with bare, brown fists And wait.

Refrain Afro-American Fragments 1. Wonder Early blue evening, lights ain’t come on yet. Looky yonder! They come on now!

5. Feet o’ Jesus At the feet o’ Jesus, sorrow like a sea. Lordy, let yo’ mercy come driftin’ down on

me. At the feet o’ Jesus, at yo’ feet I stand. O, ma little Jesus, please reach out yo’

hand.

6. Fire Refrain Fire, Fire, Lord! Fire gonna burn ma soul!

I ain’t been good, I ain’t been clean, I been stinkin’, low down, mean.

Refrain

Tell me, brother, do you believe If you wanta go to heaben got to moan an’

grieve?

Refrain

I been stealin’, been tellin’ lies, Had more women than Pharoah had wives.

Refrain Nobody Knows the Trouble I’ve Seen Refrain Nobody knows the trouble I’ve seen, Nobody knows but my sorrow. Nobody knows the trouble I’ve seen, Glory, hallelujah.

Sometimes I’m up, sometimes I’m down, Oh yes, Lord, Sometimes I’m almost to the ground, Oh yes, Lord.

Refrain I Dream a World I dream a world where man No other man will scorn, Where love will bless the earth And peace its paths adorn I dream a world where all Will know sweet freedom’s way, Where greed no longer saps the soul Nor av’rice blights our day. A world I dream where black or white, Whatever race you be, Will share the bounties of the earth And every man is free, Where wretchedness will hang its head And joy, like a pearl, Attends the needs of all mankind- Of such I dream, my world!

Free at Last! I have a dream that one day this nation will

rise up and live out the true meaning of its creed.

We hold these truths to be self-evident: that all men are created equal.

We are not slaves, we’re children of God His truth sets us free, His Word is law Keep hope alive, hold fast to your faith For if the Son sets us free, we’re free indeed

Refrain Let freedom ring! We’re free at last!

When children of slaves join slaveowners’ kin

‘round Brotherhood’s table, our peace we win.

Only then will our nation be great; for if the Son sets you free you’re free indeed

Refrain

We will hew from the mountain of despair a stone of hope. Our Rock of Faith!

We’ll transform the jangled discords of our land into a symphony of brotherhood.

Ev’ry valley shall be exalted, ev’ry hill and mountain made low,

The rough places plain, the crooked places straight

And the glory of the Lord shall be revealed And all flesh shall see it together.

Lift ev’ry voice and sing, from ev’ry mountainside. Let freedom ring! Free at last! Thank God Almighty! We’re free at last! Goin’ Home Goin’ home, goin’ home, I’m a goin’ home; Quietlike, some still day, I’m jes’ goin’ home.

It’s not far, jes’ close by, Through open door; Work all done, care laid by, Gwine to fear no more.

Mother’s there ‘spectin’ me, Father’s waitin’ too; Lots o’ folk gather’d there, All the friends I knew.

Goin’ home, I’m goin’ home! Nothin lost, all’s gain No more fret nor pain, No more stumblin’ on the way, No more longin’ for the day, Gwine to roam no more!

Mornin’ star lights the way, Res’less dream all done; Shawdows gone, break o’ day, Real life jes’ begun. Dere’s no break, ain’t no end, Jes’ a livin’ on; Wide awake, with a smile, Goin’ on and on.

Goin’ home, goin’ home, I’m jes’ goin’ home, It’s not far, jes’ close by Through an open door. I’m jes’ goin’ home. America the Beautiful (Materna) O beautiful for spacious skies, For amber waves of grain For purple mountain majesties Above the fruited plain! America! America! God shed his grace on thee And crown thy good with brotherhood From sea to shining sea! A Prayer for the World Let the rain come and wash away the

ancient grudges, the bitter hatreds held and nurtured over

generations. Let the rain wash away the memory of the

hurt, the neglect. Then let the sun come out and fill the sky

with rainbows.

Let the warmth of the sun heal us wherever we are broken.

Let it burn away the fog so that we can see each other clearly,

So that we can see beyond labels, beyond accents, gender or skin color.

Let the warmth and the brightness of the sun melt our selfishness,

So that we can share the joys and feel the sorrows of our neighbors.

And let the light of the sun be so strong that we will see all people as our neighbors.

Let the earth, nourished by rain, bring forth flow’rs to surround us with beauty.

And let the mountains teach our hearts to reach upward to heaven.

Amen. It Don’t Mean A Thing If It Ain’t Got

That Swing What good is melody? What good is music? If it ain’t possessin’ something sweet? It ain’t the melody. It ain’t the music. There’s something else that makes the tune

complete.

Refrain It don’t mean a thing if it ain’t got that

swing! It don’t mean a thing, all you’ve got to do is

sing.

It makes no diff’rence if that rhythm’s sweet or hot!

Just give that rhythm everything you got. So, . . .

Refrain

Won’t you come home Bill Bailey, won’t you come home?

I moan the whole day long. I’ll do the cookin’ honey, I’ll pay the rent, I know I’ve done you wrong.

Remember that rainy evenin’ I threw you out,

With nothing but a fine tooth comb. I know I’m to blame. Ain’t that a shame. Bill Bailey won’t you please come home.

Refrain I’m Just Wild About Harry There’s just one fellow for me in the world Harry’s his name That’s what I claim Why for ev’ry fellow there must be a girl I’ve found my mate By kindness of fate.

Refrain I’m just wild about Harry and Harry’s wild

about me. The heav’nly blisses of his kisses fill me with

ecstasy He’s sweet just like choc’late candy, and

just like honey from the bee Oh, I’m just wild about Harry And he’s just wild about, cannot do without, He’s just wild about me.

There are some fellows that like all the girls, I mean the vamps, With cruel lamps, But my Harry says I’m the girl of all girls, I’m his ideal, How happy I feel.

Refrain Down by the Riverside Gonna lay down my burden down by the

riverside.

Refrain I ain’t gonna study war no more. Study war no more, study war no more.

Gonna try on my sword and shield down by the riverside.

Refrain

Gonna try on my starry crown down by the riverside.

Refrain
