December 2008

Dear Music Lover,

Inspiration is in the air as we ‘breathe’ the season traditionally given to preparation, expectation, and rejoicing. With general excitement just around the corner as the holidays approach, we are pleased to bring you tonight our version of the contemplative side of this holiday season in our all a capella ’Tis the Season concerts. In but another

week or so, it will be our delight to rejoice with you through the timeless masterpiece of Handel’s Messiah. We hope to share both of these sides of this marvelously rich season with you.

The intensity of preparing three unique concerts of musical material for performance within a single month is keeping Schola singers quite busy—and happy about it! In addition to our two holiday-themed concerts, we are very excited about our first collaboration with the New Jersey Symphony Orchestra, in what will also be our first-ever multi-media experience! Although tickets are already going fast at the time of this writing, you may still be able to purchase tickets for this concert, called Video Games Live!, which is sweeping the world with popularity. Two performances of this show will be offered on Saturday, December 27th at the New Jersey Performing Arts Center (NJPAC). More information and tickets are available at www.njpac.org. While the performance medium is somewhat different from our norm (!), you will recognize the customary Schola singing quality on stage! We are delighted to have been sought out for these performances.

In the meantime, we are very grateful that you have made us a part of your busy holiday season. It is our hope that the uplifting beauty and goodness contained in this music (much of it little-known) will enrich all our lives, both during the performance and afterwards as we go our separate ways. Please know that we solicit your feedback on all aspects of Schola’s work (about which you can learn more by visiting our website at ScholaOnHudson.org), through conversation after the performance, through our interactive blog at http://ScholaOnHudson.blogspot.com, or through an e-note or call to me, personally. After all, we are all in this together!

Yours, in great music!

Program Notesby Deborah Simpkin King, Ph.D.

The liturgical season of Advent is traditionally a time of subdued introspection and preparation for the individual “rebirth within” experienced through the celebration of Christmas. Whether within the context of the Christian faith, that of another religion, or even that of secular life, it is a time in which a sense of awe and mystery

abounds, combined with a mood of eager expectation.

The seed of preparation necessarily begins in the womb—the womb of Mary; the womb of consciousness embodied within each of us. And so it is that we begin with “The Virgin,” a haunting theme drawn from a universal unison; a sacred text of deep imagery by transcendental philosopher/poet Henry David Thoreau, set by English-born composer Derek Healey, who now resides in the United States. German composer Franz Biebl honors the Blessed Virgin’s humble availability for God’s work on earth in his combination of the Angelus text (Gabriel’s announcement and Mary’s expression of gratitude at being selected as the mother of Christ, set to plainchant), with a believer’s only possible response: “Ave Maria” (in a seven-part, double-choir setting).

Petition: “Come”Focus on the messianic promises of the prophets intensifies liturgically from mid-December on, heightening anticipation of their fulfillment celebrated on Christmas Day. The “O Antiphons” are seven texts that are traditionally chanted prior to the Magnificat in afternoon Vespers during that special period of Advent known as the Octave before Christmas Eve, December 17–23. Their exact origin is not known, though there is evidence of their use as early as the fifth century.

The seasonally-intensifying significance of the “O Antiphons” is threefold. First, each one refers to a portion of the prophecy of Isaiah relating to the coming of the Messiah, as seen in the references and the texts provided in this program booklet. Second, each one highlights a title for the Messiah. Third, the antiphons are arranged in a specific reverse sequence, such that the first letter of each antiphon, taken together, form the Latin words ero cras, meaning, “Tomorrow, I will come,” thus bringing Advent preparation to a joyful conclusion.

For each of the seven texts, we will first present the traditional Gregorian chant melody, followed by the 1996 choral setting by American composer John Muhleisen. For the thorough student

of the score, the set is rich with symbolism and illustration. By following the translations, we expect you may find yourself quite compelled by the expressions which range from plaintive power to deeply reverent gesture. In our gradual approach to the altar, we seek to give tangibility to the subliminally acrostic intent: “Come.”

Expectation: The MotherChristians of all denominations honor the role of Mary, the Mother—whether in “Ave Marias” or in dramatic re-enactments of the Christmas story. It is our suggestion that you consider experiencing the first three selections in this half of our concert somewhat meditatively.

“Child of Sweetness” by northwest American composer, organist, and church musician John Karl Hirten sets the Orthodox ensemble text, spoken as if by Mary to her Child, in B-major; while allowing the portion given to the duet, expressing divine magnitude, to hover between the tritonally-related keys of C and F#. The resulting somewhat disturbing effect is one of heightened awareness of disparity between the temporal and the divine.

In “The Frozen December,” the affect is as warm and gentle as the previous was austere. Chicago composer Thomas A. Miller successfully portrays the mystery of a rose which magically blooms in December, drawing on its metaphorical comparison with Christ’s entry into a world otherwise made dark by Adam’s fall.

Hans Leo Hassler’s 16th-century setting of the Annunciation story paints Mary in reverent obedience, bowing before her God. American Richard DeLong, in a setting of joy and some bit of drama (through harmonic twists), plays with a 9th-century palindrome as his refrain: Gabriel’s salutation to Mary (Ave), which carries the news (nova) that she will be the second Eve (Eva). With these two pieces, we conclude our focus on preparation and expectation, and we conclude our first half.

Fulfillment: The BirthAnnouncing the joyful birth are the first two pieces in the second half of today’s concert—This Day is Born Emmanuel and Gaudete—both originally from the 16th century and presented here in 20th-century arrangements.

Venezuelan composer César Alejandro Carrillo has beautifully added another stunning setting of the beloved ‘O magnum mysterium’ text to those of Victoria, Lauridsen, and others. In this text, the marvel of the birth is experienced by the attending animals surrounding the manger.

10

The mystery continues…’wondering’…’wandering’…through Princeton, NJ composer Steven Pilkington’s stunning setting of John Jacob Niles’ folk-derived tune. The question is posed, even in the midst of the Announcement: can we accept Divine Presence in our very lives here on earth? Pilkington would seem to leave the question for each of us to ponder in his non-resolution at the end of this haunting setting.

Composer and baritone Philip Lawson, manager of and singer in The King’s Singers, seems to similarly leave open all possibilities by making the very settled D-major tonality of Martin Luther’s text in “Ah, Dearest Jesu, Holy Child” just slightly uncomfortable with the conclusion of the Psalm 146 portion of the setting on E (the confinalis of Lydian on B, the mode in which the psalm is traditionally set).

Response: RejoicingWe conclude with four selections of unbridled rejoicing! Even as the story is retold through Pennsylvania composer Steven Sametz’s setting for men’s voices, the response is continual as a refrain: “Be we merry!” In his “Resonet in Laudibus,” composer C.L. Alwes has provided singers and listeners alike with as exhilarating an explosion of metrical complexity as one can imagine through the well-known 14th-century German carol.

Roland Carter, composer from Tennessee, plays with us a bit in his lively setting of “Go, Tell It On the Mountain,” by taking us (only momentarily, as it turns out) into an imitative polyphonic texture, as typical of a Renaissance motet. We then conclude with Oklahoma composer Fred Prentice’s lively setting of the well-known French carol, “Sing We Now of Christmas.”

From introspection and anticipation, all the way through rejoicing at the realization of a genuine Miracle, the seasons of Advent and Christmas provide us with a reminder of this continual ‘life liturgy’ of seeking and rejoicing. It is our intent that, by sharing today’s musical journey, not only have your ears found some measure of enjoyment, but your spirits might also have been enlivened in ways that we may all carry with us beyond our time together today.

With joy and blessings!The Singing Membership of Schola Cantorum on Hudson

Journey to Paris during the Belle Époque(“Beautiful Era”)—a period when France was

free of wars, living standards rose faster than ever before and a golden age of the arts flourished. With

intriguing new influences from faraway lands, a fascination with fantasy and a desire to push the

envelope, the Belle Époque marks one of the most stimulating periods in all of music.

About Schola Cantorum on HudsonSchola Cantorum on Hudson was founded as an independent choral ensemble in 1995, with a mission of enriching the lives of the diverse New Jersey and New York communities with the highest quality of choral music. The ensemble has grown dynamically to embrace a mission of deepening and enlivening the human spirit by offering a passionate musical experience with innovative programming over a wide variety of musical styles, and representing all aspects of the vocal art. Schola regularly premieres new choral works and achieves high performance standards through a robust music education program. Its members—a mix of active professionals and well-qualified amateurs—supported by a dedicated Board and staff, believe that widespread cultural impact is possible through impassioned artistic leadership. In addition to its expanded 2008-2009 concert season, building on the success of its recent tour of Austria and the Czech Republic (which culminated in a performance at the Dom in Salzburg during the height of the Salzburg Festival), SCH participates in a variety of community events, and is increasingly performing concerts beyond Hudson County. The individual members of SCH have been drawn together by a shared love of great choral music and by a dedication to the highest standard of performance of that repertoire.

Schola Cantorum on Hudson is committed not only to high-quality performance, but also to making a profound impact on both its immediate and expanded communities through educational offerings. Examples of the high-quality educational programs for the community include the Cantorum Young Singers and Choral Scholar Programs. Other offerings include classes in advanced vocal technique and presentation, and assertive sight-singing and ensemble skills, through Schola's Summer Music Conservatory, and the innovative Member Inreach program. Schola Cantorum on Hudson is accredited by the State of New Jersey as a provider of Professional Development Credits for New Jersey public school teachers who participate in Schola's performance and educational offerings. More information about these educational initiatves may be found at ScholaOnHudson.org/Music-Ed.htm.

The thread of continuity that connects Dr. King’s various activities is her fundamental belief that music is a gift possessing the potential for profound impact on the human spirit, which can nurture all

of us throughout our lives. It is this perspective that informs all of her activities, from polished performances to vigorous insistence on the development of fluency in sight singing. One reflection of her commitment to this mission is her initiation of competitive sight singing as part of the NJ-ACDA High School Choral Festival, which she has coordinated since 1994, and for which new material is commissioned annually. Equally consistent within her mission is the programming and polishing of performances for maximum impact on all those sharing them.

Dr. King is an active member of Chorus America, Classical Singer Society, the National Association for Teachers of Singing, Conductors Guild, the Royal School of Church Music, and the American Guild of Organists. She is privileged to have served on the NJ-ACDA Board of Directors since 1991.

Dr. King holds a Ph.D. in Musicology from the University of North Texas; a Master of Music in Music Education from

North Texas State University; and a Bachelor of Music in Vocal Performance from Texas Christian University. Her mentor of twenty years was Caro Carapetyan, whose choral work was the subject of Dr. King’s master’s thesis (Caro Carapetyan: His Choral Beliefs and Practices, 1981). Dr. King is also a published editor and writer. Her edition of full anthems by Baroque composer John Blow, published by Oxford University Press, has been very favorably reviewed, and her dissertation, The Full Anthems and Services of John Blow and the Question of an English Stile Antico, was honored with the 1990 University of North Texas Graduate Dean’s Dissertation Award for Scholarly Communication.

Dr. King has two sons: Patrick Daniel, Segment Producer with Comedy Central’s The Daily Show; and Michael Alexander, a recent graduate of Westminster Choir College, and Manager of Wilson House, of the Christian Union, in Princeton.

About Our AccompanistDr. Lisa Laskowich, pianist, has performed on Broadway, Off-Broadway, and Off-Off Broadway, as well as with regional theaters in Chicago, Phoenix, and Baltimore. She has coached in France, Germany, and Austria, and is presently the Vocal Director of the Jakarta Summer Music Festival in Indonesia. Dr. Laskowich earned her doctorate from the Manhattan School of Music.

O Wisdom ‡ (Isaiah 11 : 2–3; 28 : 29)

O Sapientia, quæ ex ore Altissimi prodisti,attingens a fine usque ad finem, fortiter suaviter disponensque omnia: veni ad docendum nos viam prudentiæ.

O Wisdom, you came forth from the mouth of the Most High,

and reach from one end of the earth to another mightily and sweetly ordering all things:Come and teach us the way of prudence.

O Adonai ‡ (Isaiah 11 : 4–5)

O Adonai, et Dux domus Israel, qui Moysi in igne flammæ rubi apparuisti, et ei in Sina legem dedisti: veni ad redimendum nos in brachio extento.

O Adonai, ruler of the house of Israel, you appeared to Moses in the fire of the burning bush; on Mount Sinai you gave him your law: with outstretched arm come and redeem us.

O Root of Jesse ‡ (Isaiah 11 : 1, 10)

O Radix Jesse, qui stas in signum populorum, super quem continebunt reges os suum, quem gentes

deprecabuntur: veni ad liberandum nos, jam noli tardare.

O Root of Jesse, you stand as an ensign to the peoples;

before you kings shall keep silence, all nations bow in worship:

Come and save us, and do not delay.

O Key of David ‡ (Isaiah 22 : 22, 9 : 6)

O Clavis David, et sceptrum domus Israel: qui aperis, et nemo claudit; claudis, et nemo aperit: veni, et educ vinctum de domo carceris,

sedentem in tenebris et umbra mortis.

O Key of David, Scepter of the house of Israel, you open and no one closes; you close and no one

opens: Come and deliver us from the chains of prison, we

who sit in darkness and in the shadow of death.

O Dayspring ‡ (Isaiah 9 : 1)

O Oriens, splendor lucis æternæ, et sol justitiæ: veni, et illumina sedentes in tenebris et umbra mortis.

The Frozen December Thomas A. MillerCaroline L. Sargent, soprano

In the bleak December’s chill, earth lay hard and frozen;

Waiting for the Springtime still, and new life to blossom.

Suddenly a rose, so new, from a lovely garden grew;

and the rose, it grew, bringing life anew;O, the rose, may it bloom for ever;

blossom of December.All the world dwelt in the night,

e’er since Adam’s sinning;Deepest darkness, lost from light,

hope was ever dimming;

Then there shone as bright as day one great light, one shining ray

that will show the way from the dark to day,came the light, darkness then dispelling;

Peace on earth foretelling.As if Springtime now had come,

yet while still December,now has bloomed in winter’s sun,

lily wondrous, tender.Lovely fragrance fills the air,

sweet perfume of Lily fair;Sweetly scented air, lovely Lily fair,

I Wonder as I Wander John Jacob Niles, arr. Steven PilkingtonMaureen Dowdell, mezzo-soprano

I wonder as I wander, out under the sky,how Jesus the Savior did come for to diefor poor orn’ry people like you and like I.I wonder as I wander out under the sky.

When Mary birth’d Jesus, ’twas in a cow’s stallwith wise men and farmers and shepherds and all.But high from God’s heaven a star’s light did fall,and the promise of the ages it did then recall.

If Jesus had wanted for any wee thing,a star in the sky or a bird on the wing,or all of God’s angels in heaven to sing,he surely could have had it, ’cause he was the king.

Ah, Dearest Jesu, Holy Child Philip LawsonSextet: Maureen Dowdell, Joyce Nestle, Lance LoConti,

Salvatore A. Diana, Salvatore Basile, Dorian Lake

Ah, dearest Jesu, holy child, make thee a bed, soft, undefiled,

Within my heart, that it may be a quiet chamber kept for thee.

The eyes of all wait upon thee, O Lord: and thou givest them their meat in due season.

Thou openest thine hand; and fillest all things living with plenteousness.
