A dear co-worker of mine passed away last week. No, no, … Luke, James and

John are still with us!! I am talking about Hans Schaeller who was a former co-

worker and who died last Tuesday. Hans grew up in communist East Germany.

His family were believers and Hans learned about Jesus early on, but first

learned the truth of the gospel as an adult. Together with 15-20 other like-

minded believers, Hans met secretly in his home knowing that at anytime he

could be arrested and put in prison for conducting such an assembly. Some 18

of those meeting in his home would eventually become Christians. What grew

out of this little, illegal gathering was the first congregation of the Lord’s Church

in East Germany after the fall of communism. More groups would follow, as men

and women obeyed the gospel in Chemnitz, Zwickau, Dresden and Leipzig.

Today there are Churches meeting in each of those cities.

Once, while showing me his house, Hans pointed to a corner of the wall and told

me that while building the house he had plastered a Bible in a box into the wall.

Not knowing how far the communists would go to squelch the spread of the

gospel, he wanted to make sure that he had a copy of God’s word at hand.

The freedoms we enjoy in this country are great. If we are not careful, we take

them for granted and expect those freedoms will always be like they are now.

One of the greatest blessings and freedoms we enjoy is the privilege to read the

very words of the Creator without fear. Is that Word of truth truly our treasure?

“How sweet are your words to my taste, sweeter than

honey to my mouth!” Psalm 119:103

Good Morning,

There is a story about the famous Argentine golfer, Robert De Vincenzo, that I read in The Best of Bits & Pieces. After winning a tournament he received a sizeable check and, after smiling and accepting the prize before the camera, he prepared to go home. As he walked to his car sometime later, a young woman approached him. She

congratulated him on his victory and then told him her child was seriously ill and near death. She was not sure what she was going to do. She said the doctor bills were more than she could afford. De Vincenzo was touched by her story; he took out a pen and endorsed his winning check for payment to the woman. “Make some good days for the baby,” he said as he pressed the check into her hand.

The next week he was having lunch at a country club when a PGA official approached him. “Some of the boys in parking lot last week told me you met a young woman there after you won the tournament.” De Vincezo nodded. “Well,” said the official, “I have news for you. She is a phony. She has no sick baby. She’s not even married. She fooled you, my friend.”

“You mean there’s no baby who’s dying?” asked De Vinenzo.

“That’s right,” said the official.

“That’s the best news I’ve heard all week,” De Vincenzo said.

It is hard for us to grasp the idea of eternal optimism; finding the best in life – no matter what life sends our way.

Maybe that is why I write about it often in my bulletin articles. It is not always easy, but we must always remember we serve a great God who loves and takes care of us. So when there is heartache – let us find love; when there is pain – joy; and when there is darkness – let us use it to better see the light. Let’s encourage one another to always look for goodness and ensure we focus on it. (Philippians 4:8-9)
