UN MENSAJE EN LA QUIETUD ¿Puedes escucharlo en medio de todas las ocupaciones y del ruido? Juan el Bautista dice que debemos cambiar. Una gran luz aparecerá que expondrá nuestros pecados y lo que no dé fruto será arrojado al fuego. No podemos sentirnos auto-satisfechos. Debemos cambiar, ¿pero cómo? Hace mu-chos siglos vivió un hombre en la parte nor-te de África. Recibió una educación excelen-

te, pero cayó en la secta del maniqueísmo, que lo llevó a una mala vida. Le pidió a Dios que lo cambiara, pero “todavía no”. Finalmente, se enfrentó con su propio vacío y su incapacidad, y pudo encontrar la suficiente quietud para escuchar una voz “como la de un niño”. Dios le decía, “toma y lee”. Al buscar en las escrituras la página se abrió en la car-ta de san Pablo a los romanos (13:13­–14). Su corazón cam-bió. Su nombre es Agustín, obispo, gran teólogo cristiano y doctor de la Iglesia. THE SOUND OF STILLNESS Can you hear him above the busyness and noise? John the Baptist says we must change. A great light will expose our sinfulness and burn up what we can-not hide. We cannot be complacent. We must change, but how? Centuries ago a young man grew up in northern Africa. He received an excellent education, but fell in with a sect called the Manichees,

who encouraged evil living. He prayed to God to change him, “but not yet.” Finally, he faced his own emptiness and powerlessness and was quiet enough to hear the “still small voice.” God said, “Take up and read.” The scriptures fell open to the Letter to the Romans (13:13–14). His heart changed. His name is Augustine—a bishop, great Christian theologian, and doctor of the Church. Reflections ~ Reflexiones: Gospel: Mathew 11: 2-11 When He wants to assure John the Baptist that He truly is the Messiah, Jesus quotes passages from the book of Isaiah. These passages picture the time of the Messiah as marked by the same kind of works that Jesus is doing. Jesus heals the blind, the lame, the deaf, and the lepers. He raises the dead and proclaims the good news to the poor. These loving deeds are proof of his identity. Because John has opened people's hearts to the Savior's coming, Jesus says that John is the greatest of the prophets. We, too, can be like John, and as Jesus said, even greater than John, when we share Jesus' mission of making God's kingdom come. 1.) In our American culture, we have all kinds of heroes. We have sports heroes. We have movie stars and TV stars. We might even say we have pretend heroes and real-life heroes. The people of Jesus' time were looking for heroes, too. So they asked Jesus, "Are you the real one?" The Gospel lists some actions of Jesus, the actions of a real-life hero. What are the actions you look for in a real-life hero? How are these actions like the actions of Jesus?

En la cultura de los Estados Unidos tenemos todo tipo de héroes—héroes deportivos, estrellas de televisión. Po-demos decir que tenemos héroes reales e imaginarios. La gente en tiempo de Jesús también buscaba héroes. Así que preguntaron a Jesús: “¿Eres el verdadero?” El evangelio señala las acciones de Jesús, acciones de un verdadero héroe. ¿Cuales son las acciones que buscas en un verdadero héroe? ¿Cómo esas acciones se parecen a las acciones de Jesús?

A Season of Hope: Today we can bask in the imagery that the Mass readings offer us. In particular, Isaiah’s vision of a parched land that blooms with abundant flowers holds a message for each of us. Too often we are just like that parched land. We can allow ourselves to become absorbed in the waves of consumerism that grip so many. We look for fulfillment in the things that money can buy. Unfortu-nately, this leaves us like parched land, thirsting for something that money can’t buy. This holy season has much to offer to quench our thirsts. In a word, this sea-son offers hope. TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION When the ties of affection and authority that bound Europe’s Catho-lics unraveled in the sixteenth century, many cultures lost time-honored cus-toms of faith. Some customs proved to be especially difficult for the re-formers to wrest away from the peo-ple, especially those celebrated in the home. This week in Sweden, a country where the Catholic Church was dises-tablished four hundred years ago, a Catholic martyr from Sicily is the most beloved figure. St. Lucia, Lucy, is cele-brated on December 13. The long-story-short is that Lucy was a Christian whose father wanted to marry her off to a pagan fellow, and she rejected her father’s authority. To make an example of her, her father had her killed. In the course of the brutal martyrdom, Lucy lost her beautiful eyes, but her vision was miraculously restored. The candles worn today by the eldest daughter of the family are tokens of the fire that refused to harm the saint. So this pa-troness of light and clear vision is re-vered on the shortest, darkest days of the Nordic winter. Before the reform of the Gregorian calendar in the six-teenth century, December 13 was the winter solstice. Today, young girls appear in the morning wearing lighted candles on their crowned heads (battery-operated now after many mishaps), and serve sweet rolls and coffee to everyone in the house. For the Swedes, who are not churchgoers, the “Lucias” are the official heralds of the holiday season and a sign of everyone’s yearning for more light in this world. Europe once abounded with customs like this; the survival of this custom in Scandinavia is a sign of God’s grace, and how fertile the soil is to receive the true message of Advent. —Rev. Reuniones Canceladas: Les recordamos a todos que no habrán reuniones de las organizacio-nes y grupos parroquiales hasta el 26 de diciembre durante el Novenario de Misas por Navidad. Llame a la oficina parroquial si tiene alguna pregunta al respecto. TRADICIONES DE NUESTRA FE: Muchos conocemos la historia de la Virgen de Guadalupe en el Tepeyac, pero ignoramos que en Extremadura, España ya había una imagen de la Vir-gen con el nombre de Guadalupe. En 1252, la Virgen se le apareció al cam-pesino Gil Cordero pidiéndole que trajera a los sacerdotes del pueblo para que escarbaran al lado del Gua-dalupe (río escondido). Al hacerlo, encontraron una pequeña estatua morena de la misma Virgen. Esta ima-gen, según la documentación ente-rrada con ella, la cual también relata su origen, fue escondida durante el ataque de los moros en el año 711. Había sido un regalo del Papa Gre-gorio Magno al obispo de Sevilla des-pués de que había resultado milagro-sa. Su primer milagro fue el salvar al pueblo romano de una plaga en el año 591. Cuando la llevaron en proce-sión alrededor del castillo papal se apareció un arcángel que luego ter-minó la plaga. Esta misma imagen fue un regalo al Papa Pelagio II traída de Constanti-nopla donde había sido trasladada con los restos del evangelista san Lucas en el siglo IV.
