My Christmas Wish List

e have a lot to celebrate this holiday season. Personally, I’m thankful for continued good health and the arrival of two new grandchildren—new territory for me! Professionally, my blessings include a terrific staff, board,

and volunteer base at the Chamber. But I still have a few things on my Wish List:

• Continued progress on the River City Renaissance project. The opening of the arena this month is cause for celebration, but I’m looking forward to next year’s construction season when the new Hyatt Place Hotel, renovations to The Music Man Square, skywalk, and Principal Performing Arts Pavilion are more than just “visions of sugar plums.”

• Completion of the Historic Egloff House. This is another important community development project that has been years in the making. Our goal is to have the house finished and ready to house college interns by next summer.

• Continued expansion of the Sculptures on Parade public art program by including the placement of permanent sculptures in all new community development projects.

• Expansion of the Building Our Brand mural program Downtown. These murals feature geometric designs in the spirit of Frank Lloyd Wright and are beautifying the back side of highly-visible buildings.

• Introduction of the That’s A Wrap program to beautify utility boxes in the downtown area with geometric designs. We received a project grant from the Iowa Arts Council—who embraced our idea to put public art in unexpected places.

• Progress on the Willow Creek Redevelopment project. It’s time to start seeing our rivers and streams as community assets! You’ll be hearing much more about this in the year ahead.

On behalf of the Chamber of Commerce staff and volunteers, we wish the very best to you this holiday season!

Breaking Glass - December 18December’s Breaking Glass Leadership Series, sponsored by Holiday Inn Express & Suites - Mason City, will encourage attendees to challenge their own notions of what it means to be strong – both mentally and physically. Held from 8-9:30AM on Wednesday, December 18, this session features Annie Brees and Abbie Mork, founders of the Women’s Barbell Classic.

The Women’s Barbell Classic started as a movement to uplift and empower women involved in strength training by inviting women of all ages and disciplines to “join forces, test their strength, and connect with other powerful women.” Brees and Mork now offer a lifting program for high school girls to help them build strength and confidence.

Attendees will learn how Brees and Mork have pushed themselves to succeed as business women and mentors in a traditionally male-dominated field. They will share their advice for continuing to show up and succeed, even when it feels like everyone around is saying, “you don’t belong here.”

Tickets are $10 for Chamber members, $20 for non-members. Contact Kativa Weitzel ([email protected]) to register.

The Chamber is rolling out a new event in 2020 as an initiative of the Vision North Iowa strategic plan. The State of North Iowa breakfast provides an opportunity to hear the current state of affairs directly from city and county leadership. YIELD students will be planting fruit trees in Mason City’s flood plain areas, to help rejuvenate the land and provide fresh produce to community members. They have named their project “Trees for the Town: Flooding Our Community with Fruit.”

Students have contacted local nurseries, conservationists, city staff, and will be selecting fruit trees and shrubs that will work best in the flood plain area north of East Park. Project details will be confirmed in the next month and students will plant the trees in conjunction with the City's Earth Day and Arbor Day activities in April.

Their goal is to raise enough money to purchase 100 trees. The City of Mason City is supportive of the project and has generously offered to help plant and care for the trees in the years to come.

While YIELD students are actively researching grant opportunities, they will also be contacting local businesses for donations to purchase trees. Please contact Allyson at the Chamber ([email protected]) to make a donation toward the project.

degree I’m steering towards. I’m helping them find the right fit for them. I want to meet their needs. That might be a certificate, a one- or two-year degree.” She mentioned areas with big workforce needs right now include health care, trades, and advanced manufacturing.

“There are a lot of natural connections between NIACC and schools,” Toebe added. “But my role isn’t just a NIACC hat. I want to do whatever is best for that student.”

Bringing students together with real workers in their communities creates a more comfortable space for career conversations, according to Toebe. Students have told her it was great having someone to answer their questions, as they might not have phoned a college or local business.

Toebe says building these relationships across the region is very rewarding. “I feel like I’m making a difference every time. It helps the kids feel their community is behind them.”

NIACC CAREER CONNECTIONSHELPING TO BUILD THE TALENT PIPELINENIACC CAREER CONNECTIONS is building connections between students, teachers, and businesses in local communities, to foster a stronger workforce for North Iowa.

As Director of Work-Based Learning with NIACC Career Connections, Gayla Toebe coordinates experiences such as job shadowing, worksite tours, in-school career fairs, and other opportunities. As the liaison between 19 school districts and the businesses in these communities, she focuses on person-to-person contacts that might help students someday find work in this region and help businesses attract the workers they need.

“When working in each school, we want to focus on their communities and their businesses,” Toebe said. For instance, a recent Career and College Exploration Day at Mason City High School, in which North Iowa Corridor partnered with NIACC Career Connections, brought students together with employees from local businesses. It builds career awareness and workplace readiness.

“Kids think, ‘There’s nothing here, I’m not staying here.’ We’re building a community relationship, to give students the sense that these people really care, and feel “They want me to come back and work for them.’”

NIACC Career Connections partners with over 300 businesses in North Iowa. Toebe said, “We want businesses to understand we’re trying to recruit their future workforce. The hard part is, businesses are all overworked and short-staffed. It’s hard for them to find

time to work with students.”

These programs help students learn about the jobs in many career paths, even the ones not immediately apparent. “In healthcare, it’s not just doctors and nurses. It’s accountants, office workers, lab technicians, and many others. In manufacturing, it’s not just production and welding. That business needs office workers and maintenance people to keep things running.”

Job shadowing sets up opportunities for individual students to spend a day observing a person on the job. “Job shadowing is a foot in the door,” Toebe said.

Worksite tours recently included taking students inside the construction site for the new arena in downtown Mason City, to talk with contractors. In summer, Toebe arranges tours for teachers in local businesses, so they can take that information back to their classrooms.

For career days, she asks business people to come to the school and talk directly to students about a typical day in their jobs or what path they took to get that position.

“I talk to kids about first impressions and employability skills, like being on time, team building, and customer service. These are really important to businesses. We also do mock interviews, because everybody has to face an interview someday.”

Toebe said she seeks to meet individual needs. “It’s not always a four-year

5-2-1-0 Healthy Choices Count! Summit

The 5-2-1-0 Healthy Choices Count! Summit was held on October 22 in Des Moines. Attendees learned about the importance of community involvement and multi-sector coalition building to strengthen health and wellness in their communities. Laura Perdue, RD, MPH with the University of Minnesota Extension spoke about “Creating Sustainable Change through Policies, Systems and Environmental Adjustments.” Perdue explained that an individual’s effort to make healthy choices are deterred or encouraged by the environments where they live, learn, work, and play.

Partners from Mason City were represented during a panel discussion, “5-2-1-0 Efforts in the Mason City Community.” Panelists discussed the multi-sector approach our community has taken to improve the health and well-being of Mason City and North Iowa.

Those interested in joining the Worksite Wellness committee to help plan the Moonlight Bike Ride, Workplace Seminars, and various other wellness related programs, may contact Kativa Weitzel at [email protected].

Welcome New AmbassadorsThe Chamber Ambassadors recently voted two new members into the committee. Angelica Brager (Young Construction of North Iowa) and Anthony Romualdo (IOOF Home & Community Therapy Center) were chosen from an impressive selection of candidates.

The Ambassadors are the welcoming arm of the Chamber. They assist at ribbon cuttings, help welcome new businesses, and greet attendees at Chamber events. The group is limited to 25 members, representing a variety of businesses and non-profits.
