hen the Leadership North Iowa (LNI) class selected a service project back in March, they came to a unanimous decision they wanted a project to unite the community and promote progress for the North Iowa region. LNI landed on creating an educational campaign to support the River City Renaissance

Project—they felt this project would provide new, exciting amenities needed to attract and retain a growing workforce.

LNI’s goal was to inform the public and educate voters for the November election. To accomplish this, LNI helped form the Mason City Says YES! committee. Together, they made numerous presentations in the community, created promotional videos, compiled FAQ documents, organized public forums, spoke at city council meetings, raised funds, planned advertising, and more, as part of the campaign.

The LNI class and the Mason City Says YES! Campaign want to thank all who contributed their time, talent, and energy to the River City Renaissance Project. This collaborative effort resulted in a 75% YES vote for the ballot items!

Mason City now has the citizens’ support to move forward with a Multi-Purpose Arena, Performing Arts Pavilion, Hotel, Skywalk, renovation to The Music Man Square for conference space, and construction of a new museum. The future of North Iowa is bright, and all involved sincerely appreciate the overwhelming support for the River City Renaissance Project. THANK YOU!

It’s a Bargain to Live in North IowaThe Chamber participates in research to assist the Council for Community and Economic Research (C2ER) in producing the quarterly Cost of Living Index. Raw data from urban and suburban areas across the United States is analyzed to compare the cost of living in various geographic locations.

An index of 100 represents the mean; an index lower than 100 means the region’s cost of living is less than the average, and a number higher than 100 indicates the cost is higher than average. In the most recent survey, Mason City has an index of 85.9. By comparison, the Manhattan borough in New York City—the most expensive place to live—has an index of 242.9, which is more than twice the national average. The least expensive locale in the study is McAllen, TX with an index of 76.7, more than 20 percent below the national average.

Here’s an example of how to use this information. Assume that City A has a composite index of 98.3 and City B has a composite index of 128.5. If you live in City A and are contemplating a job offer in City B, you can calculate how much of an increase in your after-tax income is needed to maintain your present lifestyle. In this case, 30.72%, or about a 31% increase in after-tax salary to maintain the same living standard.

The table below illustrates the most recent data for Iowa Micro-Urban communities and compares the cost of living in Mason City to peer Iowa communities.

With Love, From YIELDThis year’s YIELD (Youth Investing Energy in Leadership Development) class assembled and shipped care packages to military men and women deployed overseas this holiday season, to show gratitude to these brave members of our armed forces.

With the upcoming holidays, the YIELD group wanted to honor these heroes who are away from their families during this special time of year. The YIELD students contacted the Iowa National Guard and sent dozens of packages to Iowa soldiers stationed in Afghanistan. Packages were also sent to deployed military members in Turkey, Japan, and other locations, as identified by local families. The students hope their gesture of a simple care package filled with letters from young people, snacks, personal items, and games/activities will brighten their holiday season.

This fall, the YIELD students solicited item donations from local businesses and monetary contributions to pay for shipping costs. Students conducted radio interviews, contacted

businesses, and shared with family and friends. In mid-November, the group gathered all of the supplies and assembled the care packages. Thanks to contributions from local residents and businesses, the students were able to fulfill their mission to reach out to both Iowa soldiers and other active military members from North Iowa this holiday season, all in time for the Christmas holiday.

Update from the Community Conciergehe Community Concierge service is celebrating a successful first year in operation! Many Chamber members are now referring new employees and their families to the Community Concierge, Colleen Frein. Frein helps to familiarize them with North Iowa, assist with employment for a trailing spouse, find quality rental

housing, learn about school or daycare options for their children, and much more. As the Premier Sponsor of the program, Mercy Medical Center – North Iowa is utilizing the service to help with physician and executive recruitment. Executive Sponsor Cargill Protein is already seeing the benefits pay off for several of their new employees who were referred to the service in 2017. Holiday Inn Express & Suites also sees value in the service and will be a Supporting Sponsor in 2018.

The Concierge Card is another way the Chamber is assisting new residents to the community. This card connects employees who are new to the area with local service providers. The Concierge Card features dozens of Chamber members, including chiropractors, attorneys, and financial planners, who are offering a free consultation or professional service for card holders. This gives people the opportunity to find the best fit for them. The card can be purchased by the employer or employee for $100, and the user can visit up to five different providers from the Concierge Menu.

Contact Colleen Frein at the Chamber (641.423.5724) to learn more about the Community Concierge service or to discuss ways the Concierge Card could benefit your business or employees.

Farm-City Week EventThe Agribusiness Committee welcomed nearly 100 people for the “Who Wants to Be a Farmer?” Farm-City Week Event on November 15 at The Music Man Square! Many local businesses and non-profits showcased their work and innovation in the agribusiness sector at the Ag Expo.

Participants enjoyed a lunch prepared by Hy-Vee East, featuring Smithfield ham, an assortment of vegetables from Fertile Valley Gardens, cookies from Hy-Vee West, and water from Culligan. The program featured a game show, “Who Wants to Be a Farmer?”. Mason City Says YES! Campaign Chair Loni Dirksen beat out Mason City Community Schools Superintendent Dave Versteeg and United Way of North Central Iowa CEO Jodee O’Brien by proving her knowledge of agriculture.

Ag Ventures Alliance was a generous Gold Sponsor for the event. Committee members are already making plans for a 2018 Farm-City Week event! Top: Jodee O’Brien, Dave Versteeg, and Loni Dirksen

North Iowa awarded $50,000 The North Iowa Sports Authority, a partnership of

Visit Mason City and the Clear Lake Area Chamber of Commerce, has been approved for a $50,000 Regional Sports Authority District grant from the Iowa Economic Development Authority for FY2018.

“We’re grateful to once again receive this funding from the Iowa Economic Development Authority and the Iowa Tourism Office,” said Lindsey James, Executive Director. “The amount of economic impact sports events bring into Iowa and the local community is huge, and we’re thankful that the State continues to support this program.”

The grant awarded to the North Iowa Sports Authority will be used to attract new events to the area while retaining and expanding existing events. Sporting event partners receiving funding from the FY18 program include Mason City Soccer, Mid States Horse Shows, King Classic Softball Tournament, North Iowa Spin Cannonball Cross, and TRI Clear Lake.

"Sporting events draw in more than just participants," said James. "Coaches, judges and fans stay in hotels, dine in local restaurants and shop while they are here, making a significant impact on our local economy."

The North Iowa Sports Authority’s application included over $6.3 million in economic impact. Other communities receiving FY18 funding from this program include Ames, Burlington, Cedar Rapids, Council Bluffs, Dubuque, Grinnell, Iowa City, Sioux City, and Waterloo/Cedar Falls. Funding is applicable for events taking place from July 1, 2017, through June 30, 2018. Partner applications for the FY19 program are available at www.travelnorthiowa.com/sports.

Created during the 2007 legislative session, the Regional Sports Authority District program was designed to certify up to 10 districts in the state of Iowa for the active promotion of youth sports, high school athletics, the Special Olympics, or other nonprofessional sporting events. The North Iowa Sports Authority's mission is to promote sports in Cerro Gordo County by attracting and supporting quality athletic sporting events that generate visitor spending in the area. More specifically, the objective is to attract, retain, and expand area‐sporting events that attract visitors to the area and generates visitor spending. A visitor is an individual that lives beyond 90‐miles of Cerro Gordo County.

December 2017

Karla Wymore, counselor at Mason City High School, said, “We’re lucky in our area to have so many great businesses, with opportunities at all levels, for students right out of high school to those coming back from college. To see the school and the community work together on this is awesome.”

Schreck pointed out that only 22 percent of jobs require a college degree, in North Iowa and nationally. Approximately 55 percent require middle skills, some post-secondary education but not necessarily college level. That’s raising discussions about a tendency to emphasize four-year colleges as the next expected step after high school. “We’re starting to ask, are we teaching to the wrong area?” Schreck said.

“One of our biggest concerns is filling in the 1,200 jobs posted for this county, up to 2,400 if you include the counties around us,” he said. “Employers here are crying, ‘We can’t get the people for all the jobs we have, but we need to grow.’ We don’t want to lose their growth to

someplace else.”

CORRIDOR SUPPORTINGLOCAL TALENT PIPELINE EFFORTSTWENTY NORTH IOWA BUSINESSES planted seeds for the future among junior-year students at a Mason City High School Career Expo in November.

The expo is designed to grow future local employees, while giving students a chance to explore career ideas and learn about work opportunities right here in this area.

Instead of an old-style job fair where students wander around booths, this annual event is more like speed dating. Students sit down at five company booths of their choice for presentations and questions. Each stop during the afternoon fair lasts exactly 12 minutes, with music marking the travel time in between presentations.

“It gives them a chance to find out what the business does, where it’s located, training provided, what they look for in employees, and their high-demand needs,” said Hunter Callanan. The fair is sponsored by the Corridor, IowaWORKS North Iowa, and Iowa Vocational Rehabilitation Services.

In the morning, students also had the opportunity to take the ACT National Career Readiness Certificate test. “The NCRC measures not so much what you know, as how do you figure things out,” Callanan explained. Results are reported as certificate levels, instead of a number score. “It’s something the student can put on a resumé, and it’s also a good gauge of what students need to work on.”

“This is the third year for the fair, and the businesses have loved it,” said Chad

Schreck. “They want to be engaging students. They know they won’t get a workforce out of it tomorrow, but they are playing the long game.”

Kelly Hanson, General Manager of POET Biorefining in Hanlontown, said, “Clearly this is where we want to be. We’re able to describe local jobs and opportunities. We see so many young people going away to college and not coming back. Our counties are shrinking. As an employer, we have to go outside our area to recruit for some of our tech jobs. We’re hopeful that at this junior-year level, we might be able to put an idea in someone’s head.”

Hanson said at least half of his 46 employees have more than a high school degree, and it’s a young workforce, with an average age of 26. “We’re looking for new ideas and lots of energy. These are well-paying jobs, and you can make a great living.”

Other employers attending represented healthcare, public services, construction industries, manufacturers, food services, and biotechnology.

“NIACC does not discriminate in employment or education. See http://www.niacc.edu/about/non-discrimination-statement/ for additional information.”

When Dave and Mary Hopper decided to take over the family business, Natural Plus Nursery, they realized that they needed expert advice. “We had no idea what it meant to own or buy a business,” Dave said. “So we reached out to the NIACC Pappajohn Center for help.” The Hoppers took the Launch and Grow business class, a ten week course offered to individuals interested in starting their own business.

The Pappajohn Center taught them the ‘behind the scenes’ aspect of running a business, including all the things they hadn’t considered such as choosing an accountant, finding a lawyer, networking with community members and other businesses, and how to analyze their business success. Even after four years of owning Natural Plus Nursery, Dave and Mary have continued to seek advice from the Pappajohn Center.

Launch and Grow provides the tools to move from business concept to reality, or to prepare your existing business for new growth. The next Launch and Grow course will be held February 15 – April 19, 2018 at the NIACC campus from 6:00—9:30 pm. Tuition is $259 (includes LivePlan 6 month subscription). If you plan to attend with a business partner and share materials, it is only $149 for the second person.

Assessing Company Health

It is important to assess a company’s total worker health on an annual basis. A healthy workforce is key to a successful, thriving business.

The following key factors impact employee and company well-being:

• Sense of purpose • Social relationships • Financial security • Physical health • Relationship to your community

Reflect on these five factors as the year winds down. Work stress, lack of coping habits, and lack of sleep are just a few examples of the things that negatively impact personal health and employee productivity.

Does your workplace offer an annual assessment? How can you help your company achieve and maintain those 2018 goals?

In 2016, Iowa was in the 3rd quintile for overall well-being. The 2nd quintile is not far away, help Iowa make that jump!
