One change Vatican II made in our liturgies was having Sunday readings in three year cycles, A, B & C. For the Feast of the Holy Family the first reading is the same for all three years. It is sections of Sirach where the relationship of children to parents is defined: God sets a father in honor over his children; a mother’s authority he confirms over her sons. Whoever honors his father atones for sins, he stores up riches who reveres his mother. [Sir 3:2-4] The reading describes more of the family relationship, which is basic and familiar to us. My son, take care of your father when he is old; grieve him not as long as he live. Even if his mind fail, be considerate of him; [Sirach 3:12-13] The Lectionary of Readings often gives optional Bible choices in the readings yearly. One is controversial for us in today’s society so it is probably chosen less: Wives, be subordinate to your husbands, …. Husbands, love your wives, ….Children, obey your parents in everything ” [Colassians 3:18-20] The family structure is not always universal. Mothers die in childbirth so the father is left to raise the children. The ideal is a complete family but it seems that is happening less these days. Fathers and mothers abandon the family and not always by divorce. This does not mean that a fatherless or motherless family is not a real family, however, just a family with much bigger challenges. In his podcast Homily for this Feast last year, Bishop Robert Barron tells us that: “What makes a family holy,…. is its willingness to surrender to the purpose of God.” Examples of surrendering to God’s purpose: Abraham was going to obey God in sacrificing Isaac. Two years ago (Gospel cycle A) an angel told Joseph to flee to Egypt to save Jesus from Herod. In last year’s Gospel (B) they present baby Jesus in the Temple. In today’s Gospel (C), Joseph and Mary take 12-year-old Jesus to Jerusalem for Passover. Paraphrasing Bishop Barron; he says a holy family is obedient to God and dedicates their lives to God who is above the family. I like to think it is best to make God part of our families; the ultimate Father for us to obey and adore. Today it is the Holy Family we honor. Joseph, Mary and Jesus are our ideal family. We also honor our own families. We honor our neighbors, our larger family. We belong with and feel comfortable with each other.

Let's celebrate The Feast of Epiphany – January 6, 2019 The Feast of Epiphany is one of the oldest feasts in the Church, celebrating the revelation of God incarnate as Jesus Christ. The Three Kings recognized the divine nature of Jesus' birth by bringing him gifts fit for a king. While customs vary in every country, our parish has used this occasion to bring together our two congregations to enjoy a potluck lunch following mass. It is an opportunity for all of us to get to know one another better and sample each other's traditional foods. It is a very nice way to bring the Christmas season to a close on a happy note. Please plan to join us. Bring along a food dish to share. Donations 2018 Christmas and the New Year are fast approaching and we would like to remind you all contributions for 2018 need to be received by Monday, December 31, 2018. You can drop them at the parish office on Friday, December 28 or in the collection at mass. If you mail them they must be postmarked on or before December 31, 2018. GOSPEL MEDITATION - The Holy Family "After three days they found him in the temple, sitting in the midst of the teachers, listening to them and asking them questions, and all who heard him were astounded at his understanding and his answers." As we celebrate the feast of the Holy Family, this Gospel exposes us to a strange tension. While this family is one we can look to for an example, they are not quite the same family unit as everyone else. There is an otherness to Jesus, something profound. And yet, perhaps on second thought, are our families so different? When Mary and Joseph encountered Jesus in the temple, "they were astonished." But at what? Mary's response is surprised. They're not astonished that Jesus is preaching in a place for respected teachers. They're not astonished that their son has captured the attention of the wisest men of the time period. They're astonished at his seemingly disobedient behavior! "Son, why have you done this to us? Your father and I have been looking for you with great anxiety." All our children have an "otherness" about them, something that makes them unique and different. They are distinctly not "me." What will our own children become? What temple will they wander off to? Who will they astound?

Everyday Stewardship Do you practice good stewardship with your family? Stewardship is about more than offerings to a church or charity. It is about continually giving of ourselves in a way that gives glory to God. Sharing our gifts with those in our immediate family honors God and is evidence of your gratitude for these people in your life.

How can we effectively accomplish this? One way is to reflect on how the 6 characteristics of an Everyday Steward are present in our family relationships. Are we mindful when we are with our family members? Do we focus on them and their needs rather than our phone or TV? Do we hold up our family in prayer? Their concerns should be our concerns. Do we find ways to show how grateful we are for having them in our lives?

When we find ourselves lacking in gratitude, we should reflect on what life would be like without them. Do we help one another without being asked because we have a gracious heart? It is easy to take for granted those we see all the time. Hospitality is not just for the stranger or guest. Are we committed to a life of stewardship that not only serves as a good example, but also helps our relatives thrive? Using our gifts without wisdom might mean we have little to give to those we love. Finally, do we hold each other accountable for our decisions and shortcomings?

We are on the journey of life together, and no one exists in the Body of Christ alone. Stewardship is about the entirety of our lives. Our faith life is not reserved to Mass on a Sunday. It all begins and ends with those we love.

Qualified Charitable Distributions (QCD) The Qualified Charitable Distributions (QCD) rules allow taxpayers age 70 1/2 to designate part of their Required Minimum Distributions (RMD’s) from their Qualified Retirement Plan (IRA, SEP, Simple) as a QCD. A QCD must be paid directly from your retirement account to a qualified charity, such as St. Martin of Tours. The amount of the QCD is excluded from your taxable income. This may be especially beneficial for this and future years. Under the new tax law, the Standard Deduction has doubled, e.g. to $24,000 for married couples filing joint. Many taxpayers who itemized in prior years will not have enough deductions to exceed the new Standard Deduction to itemize. By using a QCD, you can make a charitable contribution and have it excluded from your gross taxable income and thereby receive a tax benefit from your contribution even though you use the Standard Deduction. For more information you can find a link on this topic on our website, contact our bookkeeper, Gail Benke if you need assistance (414-209-7682), or contact your tax advisor.

Thoughts to ponder The following is from the Catholic Exchange, To Prevent Gossip, Think Before Speaking by Jeannie Ewing.

How can we know whether or not we have the right to judge someone, either in thought or speech? How can we determine what can/should be said and what we should refrain from saying? It would, of course, be helpful if we took the time to think about what we are about to say to determine if it would be helpful or harmful. There are three requirements for us to speak about another person: 1) It has to be just, 2) It has to be charitable, and 3) It has to be necessary.

According to St. Thomas, before making judgments, we need to consider these three points: 1) I must have authority over the other person. (In other words, if you are a parent, you have authority over your children) 2) It must be done according to justice. 3) I must have knowledge of the person’s interior life. (Do we really know someone’s interior disposition? Rarely, if ever, unless you are a spiritual director/confessor and truly have the gift of knowledge to read that person’s soul)

Because these conditions are so seldom met, it is prudent for us to remain silent more than we speak – or at least stop and think before contributing to a conversation about another person. The downfall of gossiping is it leads to judgment of another person and violates the virtue of temperance.

Gossiping begins with unhealthy curiosity. This means I want to know something that is not my business so I may start asking nosey questions for the sake of “interest” in the person’s life. There seems to be a particular pleasure derived from knowing something secretive or private about another person, which could be damaging to the soul.

Detraction is when we destroy another person’s reputation by saying something true about them behind their backs. Murmuring is saying what’s true with the intention to separate one person from another. This usually happens when we don’t like someone and it destroys friendships.

Calumny occurs when we say something false about someone in order to drag that person down. This often happens when we’ve been hurt and we want to get even. Our own wounds should not motivate us to hurt other people with our words or behaviors.

Television programs today seem to thrive on showcasing the very worst behaviors of people. The language being used among friends and families is spiteful and hateful. We need to focus on living as Jesus wants us to and we simply cannot allow that kind of cruelty to permeate our hearts.
