Boyup Brook has many community organisations that operate on thousands of hours of volunteer labour each year. For most, it is a labour of love, passion for the cause and a willingness to make things happen which make these hours all worthwhile.

Recently, one of our valued community volunteers was rewarded for his efforts. The Lower South West Football League recognised David Inglis as the League’s Volunteer of the Year at the recent Medal night in Manjimup.

As well as being President of the Roos, David carried out a number of roles within both the junior and senior ranks throughout 2016 and many years prior, including playing, coaching, ground manager, umpiring and set up and closing the venue. Congratulations to Boyup Brook RSL Sub-Branch members Lizz Rear and Angela Hales who have recently returned from Vietnam to provide Medical support for The Battle of Long Tan 50 year Commemoration.

Whilst disappointingly the Communist Vietnamese Government shut down the majority of the Service at the last minute, the ladies did get to network and also meet Little Patty and Victoria Cross Winner Keith Payne.

My Inbox….

August seems to have flown by, as did the Olympics. Again the world’s athletes have inspired us with their achievements.

September has arrived and with it comes Spring. The bush is starting to come alive with colour and the Tourism Association is taking guided wildflower walks on the weekend of September 17 and 18. What a great opportunity to take a moment and go for a wander through our district’s natural environment.

Winter sports have just about come to an end and best of luck to the junior hockey players and women’s team who start their finals campaigns on September 3. Our golfers still have a few weeks remaining in their season.

Congratulations to David Inglis who has been recognised for his contribution to the Football Club. Also to Colin Barron who, I believe, has just clocked up 50 years of volunteering for St Johns. What an effort. Our community relies so heavily on people donating their time for various groups and events, so it is important to appreciate their endeavours every now and again.

Happy Fathers Day to all of the Dads.

Cheers, Jodi

Support for Women in Agriculture

Farming women enjoyed a chance to learn, share ideas and meet new people at the Boyup Brook Women in Farming Enterprise (W.I.F.E) August meeting.

The meeting covered topics from bluegum land restoration techniques and results based on one farmer's experience, to how to set up and use Dropbox. The meeting also highlighted the need for better resources about high school education options, how to keep log books for calculating the fuel tax rebate, and some different perspectives on life insurance options.

Meetings are centered around a discussion format, where questions or topics are addressed or answered by the group as a whole, with a focus on sharing personal knowledge, insights and experiences. When a question cannot be answered from the group's pooled knowledge, an expert can in many cases be asked to attend a future meeting to clarify or answer questions.

The local branch is the newest in the Women in Farming Enterprises network, a group dedicated to helping farming women improve knowledge and management of their farm businesses by the sharing of ideas. The branch already has over ten members, and new members are welcome.

The next meeting, weather permitting, will be a perennial pastures field walk, held on September 1. For more information about WIFE, membership, or attending a meeting as a guest, please email [email protected].

Staff Changes Mr Jason Norton has tendered his resignation to pursue other opportunities. I take this opportunity to record my sincere best wishes to him and to recognise his valuable contribution to the Shire, in particular the appearance of the town.

The War Memorial refurbishment job is one which stands out to me as a testament to his, and his crew’s, ability to turn a vis ion into reality to better pay tribute to our service men and women. Its a magnificent area as are all of the towns parks and gardens.

Jason has contributed well, and in a lasting way, to the way the town looks. His dedication, passion and good work deserve recognition and I thank him for being a valuable part of the Shire team and wish him well for his future endeavours.

Top Tips to Living Lighter - Watch Your Portion Size

To be a healthy weight, you need to watch the amount of food that you eat to make sure you aren't eating too much. We may think bigger serves are better value for money, but they're actually costing our health a great deal more!

Tips to eat healthy portion sizes:

Use a smaller plate.

Avoid going back for seconds and freeze leftovers straight away.

Still hungry? Have a glass of water. If you're still hungry, try a healthy snack such as a piece of fruit.

Eat at the table, not in front of the TV.

Aim to fill half your plate with veg, one quarter with meat and alternatives (e.g. chicken, fish, legumes or

tofu) and the last quarter with cereals and grains (e.g. rice, pasta, bread). Source: https://livelighter.com.au/Top-Tips/Choose-Healthy-Snacks

Operation Christmas Child is a project of Samaritan’s Purse that helps bring hope and joy to children in less fortunate countries than ours.

National Collection Month for the program is held in October and in preparation, the CRC held a ‘Packing Party’ on Thursday August 25.

A number of businesses, community groups and residents contributed donations which enabled 36 shoeboxes to be packed and sent on to the needy children.

Unfortunately the supply of some items ran short to complete more boxes, however there is still time to donate.

Items that are in need to complete the remaining boxes include: Boys and girls clothing for ages 2-14 years Hygiene products (no liquids or toothpaste) School supplies and stationery Teddy bears / soft toys

Cash donations are also welcome as the freight cost for each shoebox is $9 each.

A huge thank you goes out to those who have donated to the project so far. The level of generosity in the Boyup Brook community is astonishing. Thank you also goes out to the community members that volunteered their time to help pack the boxes and to Samaritan’s Purse representative, Betsie Kruger for assisting with the day.

Annual Field Day We invite all to our annual field day on Friday, 23 September. We have a variety of trials to walk through in the morning, which include an oats variety trial by the Ag Department; spring product trial/demo by CSBP; a trial by Agrichem to increase pasture yields with the help of Kelp and Humate products and an ongoing fish emulsion trial by the Blackwood Basin Group.

As in the past few years, CSBP will put on lunch for all. In the afternoon we will have a few sheep handler demonstrations and some speakers. Blackwood Biosecurity will talk on the rabbit problem as well as invasive weeds.

The Blackwood Basin Group will talk on funding opportunities for the protection of remnant vegetation on farm land. We will also have a talk on farm succession planning by Hampton Partners. The day will end with a BBQ and drinks around the bonfire. Keep your eyes out for the flyer coming out in the mail, with more details and times. Hope to see you all there before the busy season starts.

Cupcakes for a Cause

Young animal lovers, Rosie Guazzelli and Brooke Nield, recently made and decorated cupcakes to raise funds as part of the RSPCA’s Cupcake Day.

The cupcakes were sold at junior hockey and were decorated as dogs, mice, chickens and pigs as well as special cakes for each of the hockey teams, Hornets, Sharks and Redbacks.

Their efforts raised over $150 for the cause.

Activities Galore at St Mary’s

Early Years Learning Programme in Full Swing St Mary’s Early Years learning programme which caters specifically for three year olds has been running for five weeks now. Each Friday morning from 8:45 to 10:30am, our youngest students attend with their parents to take part in a play based learning programme which promotes the development of social, emotional, linguistic, intellectual, physical and creative skills through clearly planned and linked activities.

The morning begins with table based activities which target specific concepts such as numbers and colours, then there is a short rhyme, song and music time followed by story time and fruit time. After the story children participate in sensory activities and craft activities. Outside time features an obstacle course which promotes fundamental movement skills and then the children visit the school library to borrow books before heading home.

The programme is separate to the normal enrolment process and is open to all members of the community. Younger siblings are welcome. The cost of the programme is $5.00 per week which includes fruit for the children. If you would like to join in the fun contact the school on 9765 1333.

Sharing Books with our Senior Friends As part of whole school Bookweek activities the Pre-primary children visited the Boyup Brook Senior Citizen’s Lodge on Wednesday 17 August, to share their favourite books with the residents. The children shared their books many times showing their reading and re-tell skills to the members of the Lodge community. This outing is an annual event in the Early Childhood Education Centre and is always greatly enjoyed.

Bookweek Dress Up Day There were pirates, zebras, action heroes, fairies and MORE roaming the grounds of St. Mary’s on Thursday 18 August as Bookweek dress up day was held. The children explained which book characters they were emulating and we even found the green sheep from Mem Fox’ s picture book ‘Where is the Green Sheep?’. All classes had spent the week participating in activities linked to various Children’s Book Council short listed children’s books and these classes shared their learning on the dress up day.

Fun at the Craft Hut The Year One students visited the Craft Hut on Thursday 18 August to work with craft group members to make very decorative book marks for using during book week. The students were treated to afternoon tea and expert artistic assistance as part of the activity while the craft group members enjoyed seeing the children all dressed up in their costumes.

Community Tree Planting As part of the National Schools Tree day, Saint Mary’s students were again involved in planting trees and shrubs at the Schwenke’s dam revegetation site near Greenbushes on Friday 5 August. This site is part of the ‘Priority Bittern and Waterbird Biodiversity Enhancement Project’ which is managed by the Blackwood Basin Group and funded by the Federal government. The children were also able to witness the growth of the trees and shrubs they planted last year and enjoyed checking the cockatoo nesting boxes and learning more about the macro-invertebrates found in the area.

Interschool Public Speaking St. Mary’s school hosted the inaugural TREE school’s public speaking competition on Thursday 11 August. Students in Years 4 to 6 from St Joseph’s Pemberton, Kearnan College Manjimup, St Brigid’s Bridgetown and St Mary’s presented speeches on a wide range of topics. This is a natural extension of the public speaking competition that has been run successfully at St Mary’s for many years.

Seven years ago this September, Boyup Brook’s local IGA store found new owners in Anne and Andrew Thompson and son, Harris. Since then, the store has continued to grow and give back benefits to the community.

Providing jobs for 35 staff puts IGA forward as a major town employer. It also provides invaluable experience for many students entering the work force for the first time with after school and weekend work.

Ashleigh Clark, as her first job, started at IGA at 13 years of age, and worked for the previous owner, Lee Duke, continuing with the Thompson’s at the change of ownership. She said that it was “Quite nerve wracking being unsure of the new boss’s expectations, but they were welcoming and supportive to all staff members and the transition was enjoyable.”

“A training program in leadership and communication skills taught all young staff the basic communication skills especially for dealing with customers and working along-side your co-worker. This is invaluable on my resume today as it is what most employers are looking for in a worker,” said Ashleigh. “Boyup Brook IGA has given me multiple skills and experiences which I have taken on to other employment opportunities.”

While the outside of the building has been repainted, the inside of the store has taken on a different look with new shelving recently installed. Other upgrades have included new freezers and the redesign of the checkout area.

Inside the store many of their products are locally sourced with local pork from WR White & Son, their own Venturon Beef, free range eggs from Katie Joys from Kojonup and herbs from the CRC Community Garden.

Fresh produce is bought from Canning Markets three days a week. Purchased from the Markets one day and on the shelves the next, Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays.

As the Thompson’s are local farmers, all fruit and vegetable waste and excess bread goes to their stock.

Boyup Brook IGA also supports Foodbank within the local town as well as providing bread for ‘Goodstart’ breakfasts for students at Boyup Brook District High School.

They generously support many local organisations and events with Anne saying “We are always willing to consider requests from community groups when asked.”

Boyup Brook IGA are major contributors to the annual Seniors’ Lunch and this year supported South West Paralympian Sharon Jarvis in a fundraising event to transport her horse and herself to Rio Games in 2016.

Boyup Brook IGA is part of the IGA Community Chest program that has so far raised $70m to help local communities right across the country. The Community Chest raises funds for charities and worthwhile causes such as floods or bushfires or local benefits.

Garden Club Cuttings

Garden Club’s visit this month was to Mavis Sowry’s house and garden in Nix Street. It was a pretty cold day but that didn’t stop us hardy gardeners.

A lot of work has been done to build up the areas around the house after the house had been built, and a lot a planting and mulch and underground drainage has been laid to this fairly new garden.

A mostly native garden, with many new plants, including eremophila, Albany woolly bush, daisies, kangaroo paws and melaleauca fulgans, rhodanthe paper cascade and many hakeas. I counted seven birdbaths in and around the garden, so many birds are attracted to Mavis’s garden to plunder the nectar and drink and bathe.

Other plants include adenanthos basket flower, xanthorrea or grass tree which was bought especially from a bush plant recycle dealer, many correas, verticordia, banksia cherry candles and many grevilleas. An agonis flexuosa has been pruned back heavily but still looked good, if not a lot smaller.

Thank you very much to Mavis.

Our next garden visit will be to Sandra Towndrow’s garden “Smedmore” 229 Abels Road (not Abel Street) on 13 September. Meet at the Shire at 1:15pm or make your own way.

The Blackwood Basin Group (BBG) held a morning tea for the macroinvertebrate citizen scientist volunteers at Tasty Edibles in Greenbushes.

For the last two years the Blackwood Basin Group has been gratefully accepting help from a dedicated group of volunteers. Every week they meet up at the Greenbushes Community Gardens to collect, process, preserve, and identify the insects inhabiting the Greenbushes wetlands as a part of the federally funded Priority Bittern and Waterbird project.

With another year to go this group goes from strength to strength, always welcoming in new members and constantly finding new species to examine. Their interests range all through the natural environment, from birds and mammals, to reptiles and insects, and fungi and orchids getting seasonal investigations.

Playgroup Pitter Patter

Term Three has been great fun so far, with some sensory play, a balloon obstacle course and some arts and crafts making up some of the activities over the past few weeks.

September is set to be another brilliant month with a special Father’s Day activity set for the first week.

Playgroup is open 10am-12pm every Thursday during school term and new members are always welcome.

We even have toys, mats and bouncers for our babies.

Playgroup is a fantastic way to meet some mums from the area so even if your baby isn’t up to ‘playing’ yet, it can be a lovely way to get out of the house and enjoy some adult conversation over a cup of tea.

September 1st – Father’s Day Craft September 8th – Playdough Creations September 15th – Rhyme Time September 22nd – Fun activity TBA

For questions or enquiries, please contact: Pia Chambers (0429 673 069) or Sally Larkin (9765 3259), or visit our Facebook page for information on our upcoming activities.

Craft Hut News

Well we have been pretty busy lately. Our Christmas in July held on July 21 was a resounding success. Two of our members who have moved to Bridgetown, but have decided to stay with our group were here for the lunch.

Wednesday 17 August was a wonderful wet day in Manjimup as we gathered with the craft groups from Bridgetown and Manjimup joining to enjoy soup and crusty bread and exchange stories and craft ideas. We shared ideas on a variety of crafts and a few yarns were “spun” (pardon the pun). A very enjoyable day although very wet and cold outside inside remained warm and friendly.

On Thursday 18 August, the year one class from St Mary’s came to the craft hut and made bookmarks for their book week experience. They enjoyed the day, as did our members who were there to lend them a hand. It’s wonderful for both the young and older people to get together and learn from each other. All the children seemed pleased with their achievements, some making 3 or 4 bookmarks in the time they spent at the craft hut.

It’s good when a facility such as ours can be shared with other members of the community. That’s why we have worked tirelessly to get our shed up and running. Still a way to go and in need of any spare shelving, cupboards, chairs tables pavers in order to complete this area so we are able to provide for people to do woodwork, pottery, paper making and other more messy type crafts.

Meanwhile, don’t forget to start getting your show entries under way. Time passes quickly and it will be here all too soon. Don’t leave it until the last minute and miss the boat.

Jay 0400 017 871 Thank you for supporting a local business

Imagine standing on a huge stage, lights and cameras rolling, the best sound guys giving their all and YOU performing in front of a couple of thousand people – probably the biggest audience of your developing music career so far.

Fantasy? No, as this has happened to many of our South West artists, including Codee Lee Down, Jason Norris of ‘Jason and the Stirling Rangers’, Tori Rae Davies, Tracey Barnett, Jodie Boni, Kate Hindle and Jonny Taylor when he resided in Busselton, to name just a few.

In February 2017 it could be your turn to follow in their footsteps as a Finalist or a Winner of the WA Country Music Awards presented by LiveLighter at the Boyup Brook Country Music Festival.

With over $9,000 in cash and prizes and the possibility of stage time in front of a huge audience, this is a massive opportunity to increase your exposure and spotlight your music career.

And ponder this. It goes without saying that not everyone will be a Finalist or a Winner … BUT, by entering YOUR music, YOUR voice and talent, you will be heard by our national and international judges. And every year one or two of these judges ask our Awards Coordinator for contact details of some entrants so they can either mentor a talent that has captured them or to co-write with them. Another golden opportunity only afforded by entering these stellar Awards.

Every skill level has a category to enter with the array of categories including, Group, Male Artist, Female Artist, Independent Single, Independent EP, Independent Album, Video Clip, Open Songwriter, Emerging Artist and Junior Vocalist of the Year. So there is something for everyone no matter whether you are getting established in your music career or just starting out.

Entries close 5pm on 30th September 2016 with finalists announced at the end of December. Winners will be presented on Friday 17th February 2017 at the Boyup Brook Country Music Festival, which is recognised as one of the top Country Music Festivals in Australia and has played a fundamental role in developing and promoting Australian Country Music.

Application forms are available on the Boyup Brook Country Music Club website www.countrymusicwa.com.au or by phoning 9765 1657.

RSL Update - Flag Protocols

Flags are flown in the half-mast position as a sign of mourning.

To bring the flag to the half-mast position, the flag must first be raised to the top of the mast (the ‘peak’), then immediately lowered slowly to the halfmast position. (This position is estimated by imagining another flag flying above the half-masted flag – in European mythology, the flag flying above is the flag of death.) The flag must be lowered to a position recognisably half-mast so that it does not simply appear to have slipped down from the top of the flagpole. An acceptable position would be when the top of the flag is a third of the distance down from the top of the flagpole.

When lowering the flag from a half-mast position, it should first be raised briefly to the peak, then lowered ceremoniously. Under no circumstances should a flag be flown at half-mast at night, whether or not the flag is illuminated.

When flying the Australian National Flag with other flags, all flags in the set should be flown at half-mast. The Australian National Flag should be raised first and lowered last.

There are occasions when direction will be given by the Australian Government for all flags to be flown at half-mast. Some examples of these occasions are: On the death of the Sovereign (King or Queen) On the death of a member of the royal family On the death of the Governor-General or a former Governor-

General On the death of a distinguished Australian citizen, in

accordance with protocol On the death of the head of state of another country with

which Australia has diplomatic relations On days of national commemoration such as Anzac Day and

Remembrance Flags in any locality may be flown at half-mast on the death

of a local citizen or on the day, or part of the day, of their funeral.

Excerpt from the booklet Australian flags – Part 2: The protocols for the appropriate use and the flying of the flag

Still Time to Complete Census

Six and a half million Census forms have now been completed and returned to the ABS.

There is still time. If you haven’t completed your Census form, please do so ASAP. ABS Field Officers are now visiting households who have not yet completed the Census and will be able to provide the help and support you need to participate.

The ABS addressed a small number of issues that were causing some technical difficulties so most people will now be able to access the online form and complete their Census safely and easily online.

The Census Inquiry Service continues to operate throughout the Census collection period. Please call 1300 214 531 (8am – 8pm) or use the online inquiry form on the Census Website if you need help to complete the 2016 Census.

The Census is vital for all communities, to help inform funding, services and infrastructure required by Australians every day. Census data is used to provide important statistics about how your community is changing and measure changes to our economic, industry and social circumstances.

Census data is stored securely and your privacy is assured. The security of data is the ABS’ most fundamental responsibility. Under law the ABS cannot release information about any individual to anyone – courts, politicians, police, the ATO, even the PM.

Family Support in the Blackwood

Local families have joined forces to give children with special needs in the Blackwood region better access to social and recreational opportunities. The newly-incorporated Blackwood Parent Support Group (BPSG) will work to provide meaningful opportunities for children to fully engage in community life.

“People may not be aware that there are a lot of children with special needs living in the Blackwood region,” BPSG Chairperson Leisa Hollemans said. “These are children with a range of disabilities including neurological disorders like autism, genetic disorders such as Down syndrome, mental illness, physical and mobility issues.

“As parents, we realise how important it is to ensure our children have access to a range of recreational and social activities, that our families are well-supported and the community is aware of - and actively supports - the principles of inclusion and participation.

“We want our children to have a voice and opportunities to be productive and active members of the community.”

Another main aim of the BPSG is to support families and carers, reducing feelings of isolation and giving them access to practical help such as workshops and information.

The BPSG meets on the first Wednesday of each month from 9.30am at the Bridgetown Community Centre for coffee and conversation. All are welcome.

To celebrate the launch of the BPSG, a Spring Ball is being held on Saturday, September 10 at the Bridgetown Town Hall, with proceeds going to social and recreational programs for children with special needs. The Hon Terry Redman MLA, Minister for Regional Development and the Member for Warren-Blackwood, will formally launch the BPSG on the night. Tickets to the event are available from the Flying Duck Café in Bridgetown or by emailing [email protected].

BPSG Vice-Chairperson and ball organiser Debbie Vlam said she was delighted with the support already received from local businesses and community members.

“Now all we need are people to come along for a great night of entertainment, conversation, dancing and dining,” she said.

“You don’t need a direct connection to a child with special needs – just a passion for making our great community even more inclusive because everyone benefits.”

Adult Learners’ Week

Adult Learners’ Week will be celebrated in Australia from September 1 to 8.

Why is learning throughout life is important?

We are all continually learning in many different ways throughout our l ives and while tradit ional, structured education is important – it's not the only type of learning. Learning can also happen in the workplace, at home or during hobby or leisure activities.

Community Mental Health Action Team

(CoMHAT)

The Boyup Brook Community Mental Health Action Team (CoMHAT) is inviting community members to take part in a survey to seek community opinion as part of CoMHAT’s aim to gather data regarding Mental Health in Boyup Brook. This survey contains 28 questions and will take about 10 minutes to complete.

This survey is completely anonymous and no personal details are collected.

CoMHAT is identifying the importance of supporting the mental health and wellbeing of members of the Boyup Brook community. We are aiming to find out how the community views Mental Health, what is already in place and what can be improved to better promote mental health and wellbeing. This survey is one way to seek your opinions. The opinions of school staff, parents and students are also being sought in order to gain a broad understanding of the Boyup Brook community and assist CoMHAT in planning.

To complete the survey online, please visit: www.surveymonkey.com/r/X35N5GD

Alternatively, hard copies of the survey will be available from various businesses around town, as well as the Doctor’s Surgery.

If you would like to discuss this survey, please contact any of the CoMHAT members: Renee Knapp, Mary-Anne Inglis, Dr Michiel Mel and Jodi Nield.

Poems by Chick

“LESSONS TO LEARN!”

My brother and I, when were still at school,

Had chores to do, as a general rule.

Each night we had to do the dishes,

To the expectation of our Mother’s wishes!

But we would squabble and argue and fight,

It was habitual every night!

On a certain might one of the town’s fixtures,

Was a special night out at the Pictures.

But Mum was tired of our usual bickering,

She took off with her friend, not an eye-lid flickering!

We were confounded and astounded,

That our Mum would treat us so badly –

But off they went and not even sadly!

So we did repent, just as Mum had meant.

So we knew we had to mend our ways,

And remember the lesson for the rest of our day!

“WELL, THANK YOU MATES!”

Oh, me-oh-my, and golly gosh,

I just looked in the mirror and can’t believe,

How many wrinkles the years can achieve!

Where is the skin that was so clear and soft!?

All of my good looks have taken off!

But one thing accounts, I will surmise,

And that should not be a great surprise.

How many friends have I gathered about,

Whose kindness and care I couldn’t do without.

So thank all the powers that ever could be,

For having some thought for little old me!

The Bonfire is on Again

To celebrate the end of another great Bridgetown Winter Festival and to welcome the arrival of Spring, the Bridgetown Greenbushes Business & Tourism Assoc. and Blackwood Biosecurity invite you to a free mega-bonfire, with live music and hot food at the Bridgetown Showgrounds on Sunday 25th September from 5.30pm.

Bridgetown-Greenbushes Shire workers have been collecting weed wattles for weeks to build the giant bonfire. Blackwood Biosecurity is again happy to sponsor the bonfire as a great community fun night and to increase community awareness of the cost and dangers of introduced environmental weeds.

Project Officer Sheila Howat says that because wattles native to the east coast of Australia are readily available and grow well here…. like weeds in fact! …. people often don’t consider how invasive they become when they escape from gardens and become feral. “They pose a significant fire hazard and then after the fire, their tough, long lived seeds have a mass germination ready to outcompete our native flora on which native wildlife depend.”

Bring a blanket, chair and marshmallows. There will be a smaller marshmallow cooking fire and children will be given a marshmallow on a stick on arrival. You can bring a picnic meal or buy something hot and delicious when you arrive.

Many thanks for support from the Bridgetown Agricultural Society and Volunteer Fire Brigade.

Local Photo to Feature in Calendar

The South West Development Commission recently announced the winners of its annual photography competition. A total of 26 photographs have won a spot in the 2017 This South West Life calendar, which will be made available for free later this year to promote the region.

Entrants were this year asked to capture on camera what it is about the South West corner of the state that makes them smile. And it turns out a range of aspects about the region make people happy, from stunning local scenery and iconic landmarks to seeing their children and grandchildren at play in the unique South West environment.

A photograph by Balingup resident Brian Vanallen showcasing a magical morning mist over the Blackwood River Valley was selected by SWDC chairman Stuart Hicks as this year’s recipient of the Chairman’s Choice award. “This is a very fine photograph, episodically composed,” Mr Hicks said.

“In the foreground, a couple enjoy the majestic mist. In the middle-ground ─ a rolling paddock, in the distance ─ forest. You wouldn’t mistake it for being anywhere but our South West.

Meanwhile, a photo taken in Yallingup by Quindalup’s Alisa Alison has received the CEO’s Commendation. “Alisa’s photo brought out the autumn charm of our South West,” SWDC acting chief executive officer Anna Oades said.

“It shows how our South West is different from the rest of WA and makes me very glad I live here.”

Many high-quality entries depicting scenes from around the South West were received in this year’s competition and it was a tough job deciding the winners. “We thank everyone who took the time to enter the contest and congratulate all the winners,” Ms Oades said.

Boyup Brook resident, Jodi Nield will also have a photograph featured in the calendar of sheep grazing at the Beulah Wines vineyard. “It’s exciting to have my photo selected, particularly when you see the quality of the other entries” said Jodi.

The This South West Life calendars featuring the winning images will be made available for free later this year. As the calendars are popular, those who wish to reserve a copy of the 2017 edition are asked to contact SWDC on 9792 2000 or [email protected].

Bootcamp, Country Music Style

A very exciting project titled “Shooting for the Stars Bootcamp and Showcase plus National Act” is planned for November in Boyup Brook. Bootcamp sergeants David and Merelyn Carter (pictured right) from the Golden Guitar Winning act, Carter and Carter will lead the troops in a three-day intensive music bootcamp for regular and advanced musicians, singers and song-writers.

Carter and Carter have been named as the Independent Australian Country Music Artists of the Decade and have extensive experience in teaching. A similar course was held some years back with overwhelming success for the artists who participated. This is a very rare chance for Western Australians to seize the moment and take part in this opportunity.

The Bootcamp targets Western Australian all genres and styles of Country Music (rock, folk, blues, bluegrass etc) and will work on raising the skills and professionalism of emerging WA artists in a regular group and sessions also for the more advanced. It will focus on the immediate needs of the artist as well as various skills including performance, vocal technique, running your business, songwriting, recording, goal setting, creating your unique image and doing it independently.

The Bootcamp is the ideal industry network forum and will provide wonderful opportunities for artistic creativity and will take a snapshot look at the music industry.

Spaces are limited for this once only offer. Successful applicants will be required to travel to Boyup Brook for November 4 to 6 and participation will be subject to a course fee, which will include all accommodation and meals, plus any resources required for the Bootcamp. Registrations will close on October 4 2016.

It will be a residential, live in three days of intensive learning and close interaction with the industry’s iconic specialists. The Shooting for the Stars Bootcamp and Showcase will also culminate in a possible chance to perform live on stage at the Boyup Brook Country Music Festival presented by LiveLighter in 2017 showcasing the skills learned.

There may be opportunities for participants to apply for financial assistance through their local Lions Club, Rotary or even their local Shire. For further information please contact the Country Music Club of Boyup Brook on 0897651657 or visit the web page www.countrymusicwa.com.au

This project has been assisted by the Australian Government through the Department of Communications and the Arts Festivals Australia program.

Trusting God is so much simpler than not trusting Him. When you doubt God, His Word, and His promises, you’re left to your own devices and reasoning when it comes to working things out. And as a result you get stressed out.

Take a moment and read the following three verses, then think about what they mean: ‘But the message they heard was of no value to them, because those who heard did not combine it with faith. Now we who have believed enter that rest.’ Hebrews 4:2–3 ‘He who has once entered [God’s] rest…has ceased from [the weariness and pain] of human labours.’ Hebrews 4:10 ‘Come to Me, all you who labour and are… overburdened and I will cause you to rest. [I will ease and relieve and refresh your souls.]’ Matthew 11:28

How are you supposed to approach God? In faith! The Bible says: ‘Without faith it is impossible to please and be satisfactory to Him. For whoever would come near to God must [necessarily] believe that… He is the rewarder of those who earnestly and diligently seek Him [out].’ Hebrews 11:6 That means when you come to God, you must do the believing. And when you do, you’ll receive His joy and peace. These two things are God’s will for you; they were bought and paid for at the cross. Christ’s work is already finished, and the only thing that remains to be accomplished is for you to believe. When you do that, God will respond and bless you every time! Hockey Corner Women: The Bandits had a tough three weeks in early August going down to the top sides Eaton, Marist and Towns/Souths. However, confidence remains high as Boyup convincingly won their last two games of the season.

With seven goals on the board in two games, the Bandits have successfully found the backboard at the right time of the season. The defence has been ever-reliable with the midfielders linking well to feed the attack.

The Bandits head into the finals finishing in fourth place, and it is timely to remember that only two years ago, the team came from fourth place to take out the premiership.

Their Semi Final will be played on Saturday, September 3 against Eaton Eagles at the Bunbury Hockey Stadium at 4:30pm. It would be fantastic to see a crowd of Bandits supporters there!

Also, best of luck to Jodi Nield who heads to Hobart in early October to represent Western Australia in the Over 40 Masters Women’s hockey team in the National Masters Championships.

Juniors: Umpiring Clinic: Thanks to the support of the South West Hockey Association, Boyup Brook was fortunate to have Emily Fraser (pictured right) conduct an umpiring information session to junior parents and players on July 30.

Emily has umpired at the top level in Perth as well as National Hockey League matches, and since moving to Bunbury in recent years, she regularly officiates South West League games.

Emily explained the rules of hockey and how to interpret them, as well as positioning on the field, what arm signals to use and how to blow a whistle “loud and proud”.

Throughout the 2016 season, many juniors have run alongside senior umpires to learn the ropes. Since the clinic, the number of interested players wanting to learn how to umpire has increased. Thank you to Emily for your encouraging session.

Hockey Olympics: To coincide with the Opening Ceremony of the Rio Olympics, junior players contested the Boyup Brook Hockey Olympics on August 6 with team based challenges as a break from the regular fixtures.

The Sharks were the Gold Medallists, with Redbacks narrowly taking out Silver over the Hornets who won Bronze.

The activities were all contested in good spirit and provided a fantastic opportunity for team building.

The day concluded with a junior vs parent match with the parents taking out bragging rights on this occasion 1-0.

Junior Finals: At the end of the regular fixtures, the three teams finished on the following points after a very close season:

Redbacks 27 Sharks 24 Hornets 19

September 3 will see Sharks and Hornets play in the Semi Final at 9am. This will be followed by another parent vs junior match.

The Grand Final will then be contested between Redbacks and the winner of the Semi Final on September 10 at 9am. All junior, mini and minkey players are then invited to the wind up and presentations at 10am.

The Boyup Roos finished up their home and away season on August 6 against Bridgetown.

The Reserves, fielding a full side on their last game, were still unable to come away with a win. The League with a full side took it up against Bridgetown also, but were beaten by time to secure a win for the season.

We will be back in full force next year!

Our annual $100 raffle was also drawn on August 6. The first prize of $5,000 was won by Yvonne and Steven Dent, second prize was $1,000, won by Rebecca and Steve Thompson and third prize was a bar fridge donated by the Co-Op, won by Maree Cowan. Congratulations to you all and thanks to everyone that purchased a ticket.

Bates and Wray Win Gold

It was Saturday in Boyup Brook and not Rio, but the atmosphere was just as electric as the last five shots were loaded at the Black Powder 25 State Championship match. It was a nail-biting finish with the result decided on the last turn of the targets. Two points separated Gold, Silver and Bronze and Boyup Brook local Dave Bates took Gold with 364 ahead of Max Wray 363 and Karle Friehe 362.

Sunday was just as exciting with one point separating Silver and Bronze, but Max Wray had turned the result around on Dave, winning Gold with 353 and Dave Bates Silver on 345. State Record holder Mike Knapp took Bronze with 344.

Once again the Boyup Brook members turned on the hospitality and warmer weather for a successful State Championship event.

Cockburn Fremantle teams filled the trophy shelf winning both team events, Max Wray and Barry Duckett members of both teams with Karl Friehe BP25 and Mike Knapp BP50.

The Boyup Brook Working Horse Club has been on the road for our last few club days! After consultation with Harvey, we decided to give the arena a spell for a bit over the wetter months, and give Harvey a bit of a break whilst Rose is undergoing treatment.

We are so very lucky and thankful to call Harvey Dickson’s our home, and he and Rose have been so supportive, helpful and encouraging to our club - we wouldn’t have a club without them. Rose and Harvey are constantly in our thoughts, we miss you Rosie and we send you much love.

July saw the club head to the Collie RDA for our first indoor session. It was a great experience for horses and riders alike to attend a venue very different to what we are used to. The Collie RDA is an undercover arena which has been welcomed with the skies sharing so much rain with us this winter. Thanks to Jim Laverty for sharing his experience, horsemanship, skill and patience with our members as we worked horses from the ground up.

As we all know if you don’t have a good relationship with your horse on the ground you aren’t going to have much of a chance once you get in the saddle. It’s really important to have your horse paying attention to you and Jim gave our members some really great tips and tricks to keep your horses focus where it should be.

Nicky Race delivered a very informative session on what vet’s look for when doing pre-purchase vet checks/assessments on horses. Whether you are gaining your new equine for a penny or a fortune it doesn’t matter - it really is important to make sure your potential new steed is sound and the right fit for what you want it for.

The BBWHC headed back to Collie RDA for our August Club day and it was great to welcome some new members to the club. This day was a bit of a confidence builder and a real social outing for the members and horses. There was lots of fun and laughs to be had and it was nice to get a bit of sunshine so the riders could head out on the adventure trail.

Boyup Brook Working Horse Club

Thanks to the Collie crew for facilitating such a well organised day with some great activities. All the little things that everyone contributes is what makes this club so great.

Early in September the club is going on an 18km trail ride along the Collie/Darkan Rail Trail which will be a great day out for horses and riders. We also have a few great clinics coming up starting next month.

The weekend of September 18 is a combined Cutting and Horsemanship clinic. With the Northern Campdrafts firing up now, we also have Campdrafting on our agenda and we are really looking forward to getting our horses back out at Harvey’s and tracking some cattle.

Welcome to our new members and also to some new horses to our club!

The club has submitted our application for Incorporation and we are happy to be taking the final steps to becoming a fully incorporated club.

Boyup Brook Junior Netball A successful 2016 season has recently wound up for the Boyup Brook Netball Association.

With a new committee stepping in to ensure netball continued to run in our town this year, the BBNA ran only a modified rules, skills training program known as NetSetGo, in Boyup this year. About 25 players registered, aged from 5 to 10.

In the 4 to 7 year old group, we have a range of coaches to thank, including Nicole Sutton, Keely Morgan and Jenna Welch. The 7 to 10 year old group were able to form two teams, coached by Lisa Bleechmore and Bek Dewar.

The teams loved to battle it out in a game at the end of each skills training session. Well done to Lisa and Bek for their coaching efforts and also a big thank you to Maddie Goerling, Leanne Johnston, Kerry Clark and Jen Staniforth-Smith for umpiring the games during the season.

A wind-up was held in the Boyup Brook Town Hall in August, with the NetSetGo coordinator, Nicole Bock, and coaches Bek and Lisa, prepared some great awards for all players, and also made a few special awards. Coaches awards went to Elna Deas and Anne Deas, for their continual effort, enthusiasm and improvement throughout the season.

The best player award went to Chloe Bleechmore, while four players also received awards for their perfect attendance record at training.

A Tall Order for Junior Netballers

It was a very brave Boyup Brook netball team which played in the South West 11 and under netball carnival in Busselton last month.

The striking height variation between our players and those on every other team they faced made each game very daunting.

Admirably, the ten players who attended the carnival as part of the Boyup Brook team never stopped trying and showed excellent sportsmanship.

The competition overwhelmed us as far as goals scored went, but our players were learning a lot, enjoying their games and loving their involvement in netball at the regional level.

The Boyup team sends a very big thank you to team manager, Nicole Bock, and team umpire, Kerry Clark, for making the team’s participation in the carnival possible.
