VIP guests, officials, shire representatives and community members braved the wet weather to attend the official Tonebridge opening on Tuesday, 12 June. Locals and visitors to the Boyup Brook region will now enjoy the safe drive along the two-lane concrete bridge on the Boyup Brook-Cranbrook Road.

VIP guests and Tonebridge locals sheltered from the rain under the bridge and marveled at its innovative design and unique construction.

Andrew Doyle, Project Manager Delivery - Structures, Fulton Hogan Services advised that the bridge took seven months to build and that the design uses a combination of steel beams and reinforced concrete, which offers benefits in safety and minimal maintenance requirements. “The bridge beams were cast on site and are the first of their type to be constructed in Australia,” he said.

During a break in the weather, the crowd congregated on the bridge and Shire President, Cr Graham Aird, invited the Hon Rick Wilson MP, Federal Member for O'Connor and Hon Rita Saffioti MLA, Minister for Transport; Planning; Lands to cut the ribbon and officially open Tonebridge, Bridge 270.

From there, guests were invited to continue proceedings at the Perup Guest House. They enjoyed a roaring fire and morning tea whilst listening to the official speeches.

Hon Rita Saffioti, MLA congratulated everyone involved and reminded guests that the new $4.9 million Tonebridge, jointly

funded under the state-federal Bridges Renewal Program, replaced a 90-year old structure.

Hon Rick Wilson MP, stated “The new bridge will facilitate easier access for vehicles entering and leaving the Shire of Boyup Brook on one of its major distributor roads, including tourists driving from Albany to Bunbury.”

Boyup Brook Shire President, Cr Graham Aird, praised the combined effort and said the new bridge is an asset to the Shire of Boyup Brook. “By removing the need to stop and give way to oncoming vehicles, the new dual lane bridge will provide greater safety for all users,” he said.

Tonebridge is just one of the important bridges to receive funding from the Australian Government’s $480 million Bridges Renewal Program.

Welcome to the July edition of The Boyup Gazette. What an exciting month for news with the opening of the new bridge, re-opening of Daycare AND Boyup Brook being named a host town of the Lexus Melbourne Cup Tour! Congratulations to all involved in making these projects happen.

Winter sports are in full swing with many successful results. Junior sport will take a break over the school holidays, but come mid-July, they will be all back in action.

It is ‘Plastic Free July’ where everyone is encouraged to avoid single-use plastic (straws, bags, containers, coffee cups etc) but July 1 is also the introduction of the statewide lightweight plastic bag ban. See page 25 for some frequently asked questions about the ban. Perhaps put a ‘SHOPPING BAGS’ reminder note on your car’s dashboard, or write it as the first item on your list.

If you are heading away for the school holidays, please travel safe. For those staying in town, there are a few activities for the kids to get involved with. And why not take a wander through the bush to find what natives are starting to bloom and the amazing range of fungi! Don’t forget your cameras!

It was a perfect day for parents and children, Shire representatives and community members to attend the Open Day of the Boyup Brook Early Learning Centre (BBELC) on June 16. With a sausage sizzle, bouncy castle, painting activities and icecreams, there was excitement in the air to celebrate the re-opening of a childcare service in Boyup Brook.

When the YMCA withdrew its management of the Centre in December 2017, the Shire of Boyup Brook, recognising the value of having a childcare service in the community, stepped in.

In re-opening the Centre, Shire President, Graham Aird stated that the Shire was proud to be a part of it. “It’s a good little facility here,” he said “a nice place for the kids to play safely and interact before they go to school.”

The vision of the BBELC is to support the next generation to develop, explore and learn through play, naturally.

Jimina Shaw, will continue in her previous role of Director of the Early Learning Centre and will work alongside a great team of passionate educators.

“We look forward to providing high quality education and care for the families within our community,” she said. “We have a philosophy of play based learning, with a focus on natural, recycled and real world items, to support children’s learning and development.”

Parent, Jo Hack expressed her gratitude for the Shire’s involvement. “It’s great for the community,” Jo said. “It provides a great opportunity [for children] before they go to school to socialise and it also allows me the option of returning to work.”

The BBELC will undergo a twelve month review, but President Aird is confident that with good management in place and the strong support of families, it will be a successful contribution to the community.

Australia Day Celebrations Council will host an Australia day Breakfast on 26th January 2019

An open invitation is extended to all residents. The breakfast will start at 8am with a flag raising ceremony in Sandakan Park. The activities will include a presentation to the winner of the Citizen of the Year, Sportsperson of the Year, Young Achiever of the Year and a new award, the Kevin Henderson Memorial Award for volunteers.

Almost two years ago, whilst looking for ‘Melbourne Cup’ themed entertainment for the local show, Sue Sumner stumbled across an annual Tour in which the actual, 18-carat gold Lexus Melbourne Cup trophy, visits numerous rural, regional and metropolitan destinations in an effort to unite communities.

Sue suggested to the Upper Blackwood Agricultural Society ‘Dinninup’ Show Committee that they make an application to the Victoria Racing Club (VRC) to have the Melbourne Cup Tour be part of the Show’s 100th Year Celebrations in 2018.

When approval was granted by the committee, Sue along with UBAS Secretary, Susan Titchmarsh had several brainstorming meetings to research the history of the Dinninup Show and form an application to address selection criteria including why Boyup Brook would like to host the Tour, how the community celebrates the Melbourne Cup each year and how the Lexus Melbourne Cup Tour would be showcased in Boyup Brook.

Sue Sumner said, “I was hoping that our strong link with the [Melbourne Cup] day itself, and our show being held on that day, would be a firm enough reason for them to look at our application.”

Approaches were made to the Shire, local businesses, schools and community groups advising of the application, which was then made easier to complete when encouraging responses were received. Susan Titchmarsh said, “Planning a ‘mock event’ was a challenge, with no indication of when, or for how long, the Tour could be expected in Boyup Brook. Many calls were made to the Tour organisers, who proved extremely patient and understanding.”

The closing date for applications in April quickly came round and then there was a month to anxiously wait for the VRC to assess all the submissions and announce the result.

Upon receiving an email stating “The VRC is delighted to announce that Boyup Brook, WA has been selected to host the 2018 Lexus Melbourne Cup Tour – Congratulations!”, initial shock quickly changed to excitement. However, the news was to be kept under wraps until June 4 when the official launch was to take place in Melbourne, which Sue Sumner excitedly attended in person (pictured top right).

Boyup to Host Lexus Melbourne Cup With the official news released, the Upper Blackwood Agricultural Society now announces that it is proud to bring the Lexus Melbourne Cup Tour to Boyup Brook on Friday, August 24 2018.

There will be a range of activities throughout the day including a street parade with horse-drawn carriage to proudly display ‘The Cup’ in Boyup Brook in the morning.

This will be followed by a luxury High Tea in the afternoon in the Town Hall with entertainment by the local school choir and pianist. The Ambassador for Lexus Melbourne Cup will speak to guests about ‘The Cup’. The evening function will include finger foods served all evening, a range of special racing events and a bar will be operating with local wines and other beverages.

Planning is still progressing at this stage so we ask you keep watch for further information. Tickets will be sale by mid-July with limited numbers for High Tea and Evening Function, pre-sale enquiries welcomed.

LETTER TO THE EDITOR

I am aware of the difficulties and responsibilities that come with being Shire President of our district and feel comfortable with commenting on the current President's post in last month's Gazette.

Whilst generally agreeing that it is a positive post, I am concerned that Cr Aird continues to warn rate payers of imminent rate increases. (Boyup Gazette January 2018).

Balancing the budget is always a tricky business but one wonders why the Shire is considering fixing the budget at this particular time when rate payers (and they are the only one's affected) are already under financial duress thanks to the other levels of Government budgets.

With a forecast Perth inflation rate of 1.5 percent, and I know this does not truly reflect all of Shire Council costs, perhaps it may be time to reconsider some of the proposed major new projects.

Local government shadow minister Tony Krsticevc says Councils need to do more to minimise rate increases and Local Government Minister David Templeman says he would expect some restraint.

I am also concerned with Cr Aird's comment that is his role and responsibility alone to look at our long term sustainability. This is of course the Shire Council’s corporate responsibility, Shire Presidents have no more responsibility than other Councillors except to be Council spokesman and to have the casting vote on the occasion of a tied vote.

I have attempted to gain information on the number of rate payers in our Shire to no avail so that it may be seen just how the load is spread. In this age of IT I find it difficult to understand why these can not be extrapolated.

The money raised in the past six weeks at the Lions Shop at the Boyup Brook Shire Transfer Station is $1,100. Well done to the generous folk who continue to support your local Not For Profit Organization, the Boyup Brook Lions Club.

One mans trash, is another’s treasure. We have all heard this before and in donating your goods to our shop, lessens the landfill, good for the environment, and raises money for a very good cause, our new project - 12 Seater People Carrier with Wheelchair access. We would like this to happen, sooner, rather than later.

Some folk have queried money that was Bequeathed to the Lions Club many years ago. That money is for a specific purpose.

The weather does not lend itself to too much action at the moment, so this news post is short and sweet, however, you must start preparing your patch for the pumpkin seed planting in November. Time passes by so quickly, so start now.

We will be reviewing the prizes this year, and make it more local, more competition between our local residents. It's lovely to have out of towners engage in our Pumpkin Festival, but we want to see more people from our Shire compete. We will be including a Pet Parade next year, and will love to see the kids with their favourite pet.

We have a few projects that were going to be done, but our main man, who never sleeps, has injured his foot, and out of action for at least eight more weeks. These projects are.... 1) Installing two more Table and Bench seats at the Lions Park. 2) Commence the installation of Wood Art also at the Lions Park. This will be a place where deceased Lions members names will

have a small plaque inserted in their memory.

Many thanks once again for all the public support our Club receives.

Purple Bra Day is a fundraising initiative of Breast Cancer Care WA which provides personalised support to women, men and their families affected by breast cancer. In 2017, over 1,000 people were assisted by the organisation, in the way of counselling appointments, helping with the weekly cleaning services, dropping patients to and from medical appointments, helping to pay household bills, support from Breast Care Nurses and so much more.

With IGA and Bendigo Bank being corporate partners of Purple Bra Day, the two local Boyup Brook businesses collaborated to support the campaign.

Boyup Brook IGA generously donated and created almost ninety tasty lunchboxes which were purchased for $10 each. IGA also donated two hampers for a raffle. The Bendigo Bank Agency / Community Resource Centre undertook the event’s promotion and manned the raffle and collection tins on June 22. Congratulations to Geordie Wells and John Boyland who were the lucky winners of the hampers.

All of the activities raised a total of $1466.05. Additional donations were also collected at the Boyup Brook Pharmacy.

Bendigo Bank Agency and CRC Manager, Jodi Nield said, “It was a fantastic community effort. Breast cancer has touched so many people in our community in one way or another, so it is quite humbling to have raised such a substantial amount for this worthy cause.”

St John Ambulance Boyup Brook, Community Groups and Businesses working together to save lives.

The Boyup Brook Community Resource Centre, is the newest organisation to support the St John Ambulance Community First Responders Program.

The new Defibrillator, AED, is located on the exterior of the CRC building for ease of access to the entire community. In the case of an emergency ring 000 for assistance, you will then be given the access code. Anyone who has used a defibrillator before or seen one demonstrated, appreciates how easy they are to use. You simply have to place the two pads on the chest of the patient as illustrated on the machine and follow the automatic prompts.

The St John Community First Responder program enables bystanders to try to help save the lives of people in sudden cardiac arrest in the vital minutes before emergency services arrive. Contrary to popular belief, sudden cardiac arrest can strike any person regardless of age, gender or health status and approximately 33,000 Australians die every year from this condition.

The moment someone begins to have a heart attack is always shocking and upsetting, whether you are simply a bystander or you personally know the patient involved. While our Volunteer Ambulance Officers will always respond, the single key contributing factor to improving survival rates of sudden cardiac arrest is early CPR and defibrillation. Where CPR and defibrillation are administered within five minutes of an event, studies have shown dramatic improvements in survival rates.

What can you do to help?

Be prepared, book into a Provide First Aid Course, regularly ran at the St John Ambulance Boyup Brook Sub Center.

St. Mary’s Primary School On Thursday 24 May the students celebrated our school’s feast day, the Feast of Mary, Help of Christians.

The day started with Mass, attended by students, staff and parishioners. The students then went back to class and completed a variety of activities related to Mary and the founding of our school and parish. The Year 4/5 class were taken back in time with a history lesson of the school. Some of the students even managed to see pictures of their Mum or Dad when they attended St Mary’s! After lunch the students and staff all shared a birthday cake in celebration of our feast day, and then everyone joined in some fun games and activities on the oval, organised by the Year Six students. These included an obstacle course, guessing the number of items in a jar and apple bobbing, to name a few. The students had a very enjoyable day, learning lots along the way.

On Thursday 31 May the term’s General Assembly was held in the school hall. Each class presented a small piece of work that they had been working on in class. It covered an array of topics from writing, numeracy and even technology.

The Corker sisters - Heidi (Year 5) and Rachel (Year 2) - demonstrated their outstanding contribution to the school community by being recognised as our Aussies of the Month. This reflected Heidi’s and Rachel’s commitment to the values of mateship, respect, fair go and inclusion, which are all important values we recognise as Australians.

“The by-product is a unique, high-quality and weed-free pelletised sheep manure, which is produced from our dag crushing machinery and pelletising plant.”

Dags are processed through a hammermill and crushed, separating the wool from the manure before the pelletising process, which uses high heat to kill any remaining weed seeds. The sheep manure pellets will be available for purchase at the Boyup Brook Co-Op.

According to BBDHS P&C President Sam Curran, the idea for the ‘Dag Drive’ fundraiser came from parent and P&C committee member Sally Thomson, who she said had put in a lot of effort to make it happen.

“It’s such a great community initiative and one we really hope people get behind,” Sam said.

“We are hoping that if it is successful, then it can be ongoing to help raise funds for any future P&C events.

“We will be keeping everyone updated with a ‘Dag Drive’ progress tally, which will be printed in the school newsletter.

“Having the support of local businesses such as Westcoast makes all the difference to our fundraising efforts and, in turn, positively impacts the students at BBDHS,’’ she said.

“We are more than happy to help out and this is just one of many fundraising and sponsorship efforts by Westcoast in the community,” Brenton said.

“It’s the same in other towns around WA. We live and work in these communities and the company understands how important it is to give back.”

Westcoast Wool & Livestock is a keen sponsor and supporter of rural and regional communities and one of its latest efforts centres around helping students from Boyup Brook District High School (BBDHS) to tour the nation’s capital.

The company has combined with the BBDHS Parents and Citizens Association (P&C), encouraging local farmers to donate their wool oddments and dags to help raise funds for the school’s Year 5/6 camp to Canberra in December.

Westcoast Wool & Livestock Boyup Brook/Kojonup representative, Brenton Tynan, said it was easy for people to get involved in the ‘Dag Drive’, with every donation helping the students reach their target.

Brenton said farmers could drop off any wool oddments and dry dags, with Merino wool bagged separately to crossbred wool, at the local Westcoast Wool & Livestock store, which was conveniently located in the main street of Boyup Brook. Alternatively, donations also can be collected on-farm.

The donations will then be transported to the company’s Katanning store, which is the only regional Australian Wool Testing Authority-accredited wool handling and testing facility in WA, before being taken to its main wool store in Bibra Lake.

“The P&C will get paid for the total weighted donations and by-product, with Westcoast on-selling the wool component,” Brenton said.

Women in Farming Enterprises

“She is not just a farmers wife! She is also a mediator, counsellor, finance officer, grain seller, caterer, shed hand, business partner, etc….she is a farmer!”

Life on the farm can be daunting, isolating and overwhelming but it can also be amazing! Our local Women in Farming Enterprises is a group of women who want to learn, share and better our knowledge of some of the many aspects that make up what it is to be a farmer. Since starting three years ago we have welcomed several guest speakers to learn about agronomy, finance, biosecurity, farm safety, first aid, water testing plus many more.

July 3rd we are being joined at the CRC by one of our major sponsors from Primaries for a Q and A on the wool industry. Mark Screaigh has just returned from an international convention so will

be a wealth of knowledge for us to learn from.

August 7th we are back at Treehouse for a BYO farming idea think tank. Be it a helpful bit of information, a farming app you are having a bit of joy with, etc, we would love to hear about it.

September 4th WA Property Lawyers will be joining us at the CRC with a focus on estate and farm succession planning but also including property, corporate and family law! Something all of us come across at some point so this one will be one we can all take something from.

What’s Your Angle?

The Boyup Brook Community Resource Centre (BBCRC) is excited to bring a new competition and exhibition to the community to showcase the art of photography - ‘What’s Your Angle?’

With the BBCRC successfully having coordinated the Boyup Brook Art Awards for the past three years, there has been feedback received for this event to include photography, however with many keen photographers locally, and in surrounding towns, there is just cause to give photography its own showcase.

The event will consist of categories including Agriculture, Flora, Fauna, Landscapes and People Portraits. Prizes will be awarded for each category as well as for the Most Outstanding Print, Under 18 prize and a People’s Choice award, based on popular vote from those who view the exhibition. The images with the most votes will also be featured in a 2019 calendar.

The award winners will be announced and a selection of entries will be on display as part of the festivities of the Lexus Melbourne Cup tour in Boyup Brook on Friday, August 24. The full exhibition will then be open to the public at the Boyup Brook CRC from Monday, August 27 to 31 2018.

Tuning into Teens Parenting Program For six weeks, six local parents attended the ‘Tuning into Teens’ program which was brought to Boyup Brook by AnglicareWA and the Department of Communities. The program provided information and skills in recognising and coaching various emotions through positive communication. Feedback from the participants included: “This course has really strengthened my bond with my kids”, “My awareness of how to talk to my kids in a positive way has grown tremendously”, “Tuning into Teens gave me such important and powerful knowledge.”

Boyup Brook Playgroup is proudly supported by Rylington Park and we were lucky enough to be invited out there on Monday 21st May.

Marc, Erlanda, Anne and Elna were as welcoming as always, providing us with a seriously amazing morning tea before the kids fed the sheep. Over in the shearing shed, Matt Chambers demonstrated how to shear a sheep then allowed a few of our kids to have a try. We certainly have some future shearers amongst us!

The highlight, however, was a tractor and a large muddy puddle (of course!). The children played for ages in the puddle, getting mud absolutely everywhere. It was certainly ‘messy play’ at it’s finest! Those who weren’t so keen on getting dirty climbed in the tractor and put their imaginations to good use, pretending to feed the sheep and harvest this year’s crops.

Thank you to the Deas Family for having us out at Rylington Park. It was such a wonderful day with many children making lasting memories.

Playgroup will be closed over the school holidays and will return on Monday July 16th. We wish all of our families a wonderful break and look forward to seeing you all back for another fun filled Term.

Success Year for Comfortmakers

Just over forty quilts, a record number, were dispatched at the beginning of June, to be distributed to those in need by the Welfare Department of Vinnies in Bunbury.

For this remarkable success we have many people to thank, beginning with the hands-on quilters who meet weekly during the months of Autumn. Then there are those who quietly work from home, cutting fabric, or joining them into beautiful patterns.

Some supporters are on the look out for bargains and we receive some new fabric, as well as bits and pieces left over from other projects. We are always grateful for spare COTTON material, any size or colour. Donated for this season were two rolls of cotton/polyester batting; gratefully received.

Also unique to this year's contributors was a monetary donation from the Southern Quilters (possibly not the exact name), following their successful display and sale of work in Boyanup.

To finance this charity work we rely on donations, and we also fundraise with our Silent Auction. This year, from the auction at the CRC in May, combined with donations during the week of the display, we raised $200. The Auction winner was Naomi who was thrilled to take home the Quilt of her choice.

Helpers are more than welcome, to pin, cut squares, iron, sew.... The only skill required is a sense of humour!!! :)

Garden Club Cuttings

We had a lovely day looking around Leah and Adam Windsor’s garden in June ten members present – apologies from Roz Fairbrass, Lena Rainoldi and Liz Blechynden. Brian Mudge was busy putting his crop in the ground after the recent rain.

Leah welcomed all to her garden, they had a variety of different shrubs and ground covers planted around in different areas of the garden. A lovely artichoke and philodendron planted under a bottlebrush tree with lambs ears growing around the borders.

Leah is very successfully growing a lot of her garden from cuttings. Geraniums and purple statice could be seen scattered around in each little garden beds. Many rounded shrubs of the “Chinese Lanterns” with a dainty little flowers of yellow and orange colours. Miniatures of different succulents planted in a photo frame with a core matting backing held in place by netting wire. Adam had made some really nice chook pens with really healthy looking Isa Browns plus Rhode Island Reds and some greys enclosed. Walking around the other side of the garden by the entrance we came upon a beautiful perfumed rose “Fire House Red” plus some blackboys and a “Revolution gold” melaleuca.

They had a lovely little brook running along down the hill.

St Saviours’ Snippets

St Saviour’s prepares for a ‘PLASTIC FREE JULY’

On 27 May 2018, Fr Terry O’Neill had the unusual request to bless a wheelie bin and all that goes in it.

Many of you will know that St Saviour’s Anglican Church in Boyup Brook is among the leaders in initiatives to ‘care for creation’.

The purpose of this wheelie bin is to be a receptacle for plastics generated within the church which are not acceptable in the kerbside recycling service.

It all began when Bev Coumbe who purchases biscuits for morning tea after church, announced ‘no more bikkies’ as the packaging is not recyclable. Another member, Jan Ritson presented a plastic packet being recycled by REDcycle. (refer to: www.redcycle.net.au for the variety of plastics they accept – and don’t accept). Biscuits are back on the table.

From St Saviour’s, these plastics will be taken to Coles Supermarkets who are receival agents for REDcycle.

Our nearest Coles are in Manjimup and Collie, 70-80kms away and also Bunbury 120kms away. I have emailed Coles who confirm that their supermarkets will accept these plastics from other communities and shops.

These sundry plastics are sent to Victoria where they are made into heavy duty outdoor picnic benches, farm fencing and much more (look at www.replas.com.au for their products).

We hope that other organisations in Boyup Brook will also provide a receival bin for the plastics accepted by REDcycle.

Winter is a great time for the ladies at the craft hut to stay indoors and learn to do Macramé. This is exactly what we did on June 21.

A number of our regulars plus a couple of other community members attended this workshop which was kindly run by Karla Paiget from the Bridgetown craft group. A big thank you to Karla, it was a fun day and we learnt a lot.

During the next school vacation we will be again running regular ceramic workshops for children. If your young people want to fill in their days and come along and paint ceramics of their choice they can join us on Monday or Wednesdays of the school vacation from 10am in the morning for a small fee of $5 per family plus the cost of the item they choose to paint. Children attending must be accompanied by an adult and it is advisable to wear old clothes as it can get messy.

The craft group now have a knitting machine and thanks to Sue Gale who has carried out maintenance on it we know can boast we have a working machine that anyone who wants to use can do so. Sue is willing to share her expertise and show any keen knitters how it works.

Boomerang bags are being made once more now that we have more logos printed to enable the project to continue momentum. Don’t forget to return your bags unless you are continuing to use them, so that others can take advantage of having non plastic bags to take their shopping home in.

If you have any spare time and would like to be involved in this important project reduce single use plastic bags in our community why not call in and collect some bags and logos to sew. Many hands make light work.

Large scale fires Peaceful Bay was not so peaceful recently-nor were properties around the Stirling Ranges and Albany. A number of out of control bushfires created mayhem and some frightening moments for both residents and firefighters. Locals affected by these fires have highlighted the need for property owners to be vigilant, and whilst prescribed burning is still supported, they want tighter management practices and understanding of weather conditions. Our thanks and appreciation go to all emergency personnel who battled these blazes.

Warren Health Service I am very impressed with the high quality of workmanship and outstanding facilities at the new Manjimup Hospital. This will be a valuable health asset to the town and region for many years to come. I am proud that contributions from Royalties for Regions have resulted in such a modern, professional facility ensuring local access to quality health care.

SMART Drum lines I recently attended the Nationals NSW State Conference and met with Niall Blair, NSW Minister for Primary Industries. Minister Blair outlined the resounding success of SMART drum lines in providing increased safety to water users from shark attacks. NSW has offered to lend five SMART drum lines to Western Australia but our Minister for Fisheries Dave Kelly has refused the proposal estimating it would cost $75 million a year. I fail to understand how this figure has been determined as the technology, including drones and aeroplanes, cost the NSW government $16 million over four years.

Bridgetown celebrates 150 years Bridgetown residents recently displayed their exceptional community pride as they celebrated the town’s 150th anniversary. The event acknowledged Aboriginal history, early settlers and families who built the community. Over decades the town has embraced farming, forestry, tourism and lifestyle choices. Congratulations on throwing such a good party.

Extending trails and tracks The Nationals WA recently released a discussion paper promoting the extension of the Bibbulmum and Munda Biddi Trails through to Esperance. The idea is to strengthen the international reputation of these trails and market the many complementary trails and tracks in the South West. Nature based tourism encourages visitors to stay in the region longer to explore our pristine natural environment, which in turn supports local businesses and creates employment.

The Boyup Brook – Cranbrook Rd

Following the opening of the $5 million bridge over the Tone River at Tone Bridge, there is some interesting information about the road to Cranbrook.

It was originally surveyed as a Railway Line. The line was to go east from Boyup Brook, circle around to Mayanup, along a portion of the present Scott’s Brook Road, up a long gully to the south. After some meandering to the top of the gully, then along the now Cranbrook road.

They had to find a route through possibly some thick virgin bush. Fred Proctor once told me that he had to cart a load of railway sleepers to Mayanup, but when the project was cancelled he had to cart them back to Boyup.

It was reported in the Bunbury Herald and Blackwood Express on Friday 19th November 1926 that the 8th Upper Blackwood show was a magnificent display on the Thursday 11th November, 1926.

The Minister for Works had received a surprise when he visited the district some time ago in connection with the Boyup-Cranbrook railway, a scheme that would open up a lot of good land in the district - it had been dealt with in the house the previous night (Wednesday) and he thought the construction work would start about February next. Every Board throughout the state would receive 2000 pound per annum to spend on minor roads an 60000 Pound on major roads. Bad roads were becoming a thing of the past and there was a vast improvement of country roads.

“There are immediate health benefits as soon as you quit smoking, even if you already suffer health problems,” according to Boyup Brook Nurse Practitioner Ms Nicole Harwood.

According to the Cancer Council, Quitting smoking is one of the most important things you can do to reduce your risk of cancer and assist to address other health conditions.

Current smokers are estimated to die an average of 10 years earlier than non-smokers.

Tobacco smoking is the largest preventable cause of cancer and is also directly responsible for many heart and lung diseases. Smoking affects the smoker, as well as those around them, such as partners, children, parents, siblings.

Do you need a reason to Quit? Ms Harwood said, “After a day of not smoking, almost all of the nicotine is out of your bloodstream and the level of carbon monoxide in your blood reaches normal levels”

“The good news is that within a week, your senses of taste and smell start to return. At two months, your cough and wheeze decrease showing your immune system is beginning to recover”.

Research has proven that the body as a result of quitting will be better at fighting off infection. After one year, lungs are healthier and breathing easier than if a smoker kept smoking. Within 2-5 years risk of heart attack and stroke is reduced

After 10 years of not smoking, risk of lung cancer is halved and risks of cancers of the mouth, throat, bladder, kidney, oesophagus, bladder, and pancreas decreases. Quitting will also aid recovery of other health conditions or eliminate existing complications.

An added incentive is that by quitting a daily smoker can save up to $8,000 a year!

Support for Quitting Ms Harwood said, “Finding your own approach to quitting is important where you choose a quitting method you feel comfortable with and that suits your lifestyle”.

“Many people need to practice quitting several times before they give up for good and having a support system in place can make a huge difference”.

Stories of Miss Fuller

What do you remember of Alice Fuller?

Alice Fuller arrived in the district in 1902 as a two year old with her parents Henry and Emily, along with her eleven brothers and sisters. A stalwart of the district and business owner for more than forty years.

We have a few articles on Miss Fuller in the museum. She was awarded the British Empire Medal on the 31st December 1981 for services to the community.

On her passing 3rd June 1991 this medal was to be given to the residents of the district. After 27years of THIS MEDAL sitting in a safe we now have this, and it is in holding. We would like to expand on what we have and place her medal on display.

WA’s Plastic Bag Ban - FAQ

When does the bag ban come into effect? The ban on lightweight plastic bags begins on 1 July 2018.

What bags are banned? The plastic bag ban includes all lightweight plastic bags with handles, 35 microns thick, or less (including degradable, biodegradable and compostable plastic bags).

Who does the ban apply to? ALL retailers in Western Australia including food retailers, market stall holders and organisations that supply lightweight plastic shopping bags.

Can a retailer supply lightweight degradable, biodegradable or compostable plastic bags? No. Degradable, biodegradable and compostable lightweight bags are included in the ban. Degradable bags break up into smaller pieces of plastic (microplastics) and can be eaten by animals. Biodegradable and compostable bags persist in the environment for long periods and do not break down in temperatures below 50 degrees – conditions not found in the environment for prolonged periods of time.

Can I still use heavier-weight plastic bags typically used by department stores? Yes. Heavier-weight plastic bags are designed to be used multiple times. Some retailers may have heavier weight plastic bags for sale.

I use plastic shopping bags as bin liners. What are the alternatives? Consider lining your bin with newspaper or simply washing your bin after emptying it. You can wrap your organic waste in newspaper and put in the freezer until bin collection day. Purpose-made bin liner bags will still be available for sale.

What difference will this ban really make? More than 670 million lightweight plastic bags were used in Western Australia in 2017 and of these approximately seven million were littered. Lightweight plastic bags are easily blown by the wind, littering streets, parks and waterways. When they enter the ocean they endanger wildlife. Plastic bags also break up into small fragments (microplastics) and can be ingested by marine and land animals, entering the human food chain.

Wildflower Watch

Now that the rains are here there are so many bush plants budding up soon to be bursting with colour. It is time to make plans to stroll through your nearest piece of bush land when the weather is too inviting to stay indoors.

Remember to look carefully because a good percentage of our native flowers are very small but quite exquisite when studied closely.

This month several orchids come up to bloom and the first leaves of others are already making an appearance. From now on until late October, the bush is an adventure of discovery and worth the time it takes to go looking.

The desire to change is the key to growth in any area of life. Most of us desire improvement, yet at the same time we resist change. But you can’t have one without the other! Change is possible only if you want it badly enough.

As Fred Smith, the founder of Federal Express, observed: ‘You are the way you are, because that’s the way you want to be. If you really wanted to be any different, you’d be in the process of changing right now.’ Change is never easy.

It takes lots of time, tremendous amounts of energy, perseverance, and—of course—desire. But the desire to change must translate into a decision to change. And you must make that decision day after day.

It’s said that Earl Weaver, manager of the Baltimore Orioles baseball team, was unhappy with a decision by the umpire so he charged out of the dugout and yelled at him, ‘Are you gonna get any better, or is this it?’

If you want to change, you must ask yourself a similar question. Are you going to keep working and trying to get better, or is this as good as it gets?

The Bible puts it like this: ‘Enlarge the place of your tent; and let them stretch out the curtains of your dwellings; do not spare; lengthen your cords, and strengthen your stakes.’

Pay close attention to the words enlarge, stretch, lengthen and strengthen. What do they have in common? They all require commitment and persistence.

That’s what it takes to change your life. And the good news is that with God’s help, you can do it—starting today.

Hockey Huddle Women The Boyup Brook Women’s Hockey team continue their top of the table form, with another three wins during June in the Bunbury A2 competition. Despite the month’s irregular fixtures (two byes, a double header on one weekend, a bye, then another game), the team continues to link well, penetrate the attacking circle and defend strongly.

Juniors Junior hockey continues to travel along incredibly well. Our four teams of juniors playing Saturday mornings are continuing to improve their skills each week and putting in a great effort at training. We have also seen increased numbers of the last few weeks in mini and minkey hockey which is fabulous.

Junior Hockey will return after the school holidays with our training resuming on Thursday 19.

The Long Weekend in June saw Boyup Brook enter a Year 5/6 Girls team in the Bunbury Junior Hockey Carnival. A big thanks to Tara Reid for taking on the role of Coach. The girls had a ball and enjoyed their 8 games over the weekend!

Bowled Over

A good group of bowlers headed to the Samwell farm for a woodcut to help the Boyup Brook Club out with their winter wood supply. It also assisted Bob Samwell – not in the best of health but happy to wield a chainsaw and assist the busy group.

Surprise Win for Pennant Team

The Boyup Brook lady golfers were thrilled to be part of the team to win the B Division of the South West Districts Golf Pennants.

The Team of five Boyup Brook Players: Rhonda Parker, Lyn Willett, Jenny Aird, Penny Tweedie and Denise Twigg, joined Di Smith from Bridgetown Golf Club and Caterina Bending and Kerry De Campo from Manjimup Country Club to make up the winning team members in the BBK/BTN/MJP team.

The competition consisted of 18 teams divided into three pools from throughout the South West.

Playing the first game at Capel against Harvey White, the team was disappointed to lose 3/2.

The second match proved successful with a win of 3/1 against Capel at Donnybrook giving us a much needed 2 points for a win.

Unfortunately playing in Bunbury against Donnybrook we conceded a loss of 2/1. However, the next week, we were thrilled to beat Collie on their home turf with a 3/2 win.

With one match to go, with our score only on 4 points and Harvey White on 6, it seemed inevitable that making the finals was near impossible. With our focus on just going out and having a jolly good game of golf, you can imagine our surprise when Donnybrook beat Harvey and our team, who were playing Bunbury Mashes, came in with a 5 game win.

With BBK/BTN/MJP, Harvey South and Donnybrook all with 6 points, it went down to games won as to who moved into the final. With 2.5 games in front of Harvey White we moved into the final to play against Serpentine at Donnybrook. The 3/2 win sent us into the Grand Final where we successfully beat Dunsborough Lakes 3/2 at Capel Golf Club.

All pennant players thank the South West Districts Ladies Golf Association who co-ordinates the Pennant competition, organises fixtures and venues and collates the results.

Although everyone is competitive the games are played in a friendly manner on some of the best golf courses in the South West.

The 2018 season got underway on 5 May with a Mixed Ambrose Event sponsored by Boyup Brook Farm Supplies. In the absence of the Club champion, the Men’s President was asked to hit the season off. He elected to play a knock down shot keeping his ball out of the strong head wind, (hit it on the head and it rolled 50m).

9th June The Men travelled to Bridgetown for the Annual Boyup-Bridgetown Challenge Match; 4BBB Match Play. On the bus trip over it was decided Bridgetown’s commitment to the event was starting to wane. In the interest of keeping the competition alive we elected to hand them an easy victory. The competition now stands at 4 wins apiece.

16th June Mixed Foursomes Championship Stroke Twelve pairs enjoyed near perfect conditions to contest this gruelling event. Long time members of the club, Rhonda and Neville Parker were quoted as saying, “There is no greater test of a marriage than playing in a Mixed Foursomes event.”

It is hard to believe that it has been 10 years since the Boyup Brook Cricket Club won the 2007/08 now defunct Donnybrook Capel and Districts Cricket Association.

In this month’s edition, I would like to share and relive that experience from 10 years ago.

The Boyup Brook Cricket Club has won their second premiership in three years, after winning two years ago.

Their opponent in the final was Donnybrook, winning the final two games to one, avenging last years disappointing loss to them at home.

Boyup managed to come from behind losing the first game, then going on to win the remaining two games. It was a hard fought finals series with a complete team effort, with no particular cricketer a stand out.

The first game had to be postponed until the Sunday, after the pitch was too wet. Boyup were sent into bat and made a steady start before losing their first wicket at 18. Wickets continued to fall at an all too regular occurrence, the Donnybrook bowlers enjoying the damp pitch, Boyup reeling at 9-55. A 25 run stand between Michael Wallace (15) and Travis Reid (9) allowed the total to reach 80. Ty Bancroft was the only other batsman in double figures with 15. In reply Boyup managed to get two quick wickets, but 80 was never enough, and they lost by five wickets. Donnybrook went 1 up in the best of 3 series.

In the second game Boyup won the toss and elected to bowl. This decision looked like it might have backfired on them with Donnybrook 0-50 after 10 overs. Boyup then managed to get 4 quick wickets and the game was evenly poised. A 47 run partnership saw Donnybrook get back on top, but after that stand was broken, Brad Fairbrass (2-21) and Scott Tweedie (3-19), ripped through Donnybrook’s tail to dismiss them for 145. The last 5 wickets came for only 30 runs.

In reply, Boyup were off to a nervous start losing an early wicket. Ty Bancroft (35) rode his luck and with Nic Marshall (20), steadied the ship with a 55 run partnership. Once they were both dismissed and with two of the clubs best batsmen Alex Tweedie and Marcus Gifford in the shed, Boyup were in a precarious position at 5-79. Scott Tweedie (20) had a number of small partnerships with the middle/lower order, before he was dismissed with 23 runs to win. After Michael Wallace was dismissed, Darren Peck and Travis Reid needed 17 runs to win in a desperate last wicket stand. They decided attacking the bowling was the best option, and this worked a treat as Reid’s french cut brought up the winning runs to level the series 1-1.

The third and final game saw Boyup put Donnybrook into bat again. Once again Donnybrook made steady inroads and at drinks were 3-62. However with captain Tristan Mead (3-25) bowling well and dismissing Donnybrook’s two key batsmen with the score on 93, Boyup were able to clean up the tail, bowling them out for 118. Michael Wallace who had bowled well all year saved his best for last with great figures of 4-18.

So Boyup were set 119 to win the premiership. They lost their first wicket early with the score on only 3. The second wicket fell at 16, and 119 was starting to look a long way away. Enter Nic Marshall and ‘Fridge’ Gray.

They steadily rebuilt the innings putting on 59 runs together before Marshall went for 18. 3-75. Marcus Gifford came to the crease and both batsmen upped the tempo in striving towards the target. 5 runs before victory ‘Fridge’ was dismissed for a well made and match winning 48, the innings of his year. Gifford (17*) stuck around to hit the winning runs, and Boyup had won the premiership.

Thank-you to all the supporters who travelled over to Donnybrook to cheer on the boys. They had more support than the Donnybrook boys.

The last 10 years the Boyup Brook Cricket Club has continued to see it prosper, having played off in four grand finals, winning two of them.
