My Inbox….

Happy 2015! I hope everyone had an enjoyable Christmas.

The Community Christmas celebrations held at the beginning of December really kicked off the Christmas spirit and the light displays around town were fantastic. Congratulations to those who spent many hours preparing their displays for the enjoyment of others.

There may not be many organised activities during January, however it is a great time to make the most of our swimming pool and recreational facilities, and take some time to recharge.

The Shire’s Australia Day celebrations will be held at Sandakan Park commencing at 8am on January 26th. I look forward to seeing another large crowd in attendance.

A special mention to John and Marie Kemsley who have handed over the reigns of the RFDS. Congratulations on your achievements over the past few years - truly outstanding!

If you are travelling away for holidays during January, enjoy and please stay safe.

Until then... Jodi

Boyup Brook’s Dickinson Estate Wines has recently won a trophy in the 2014 Cathay Pacific Hong Kong International Wine and Spirit Competition (HKIWSC) for their 2014 Dickinson Estate Chardonnay ‘Best Wine with Cantonese Dim Sum’.

The four wines entered were awarded a Gold (Chardonnay), Silver (2013 Shiraz) and a bronze each for the Sauvignon Blanc and Cabernet Sauvignon in the general wine judging section.

Celebrating its sixth year, the HKIWSC is the first truly Asian wine competition in the world. It is judged by some of the most esteemed wine judges from China, Singapore, Japan, Korea, Taiwan and India – including the competition’s Director and Master of Wine, Hong Kong based Debra Meiburg MW and Chinese food and wine expert, Simon Tam.

The awards given by the competition are believed to be among some of the highest honours in the industry.

Judging for the Competition is unique in that it has two stages:

Firstly, the products are tasted blind by expert panels, selected from over 300 fully experienced and qualified industry judges.

Secondly, a team from KPMG independently verifies all results before the announcement is made, ensuring the rigour and validity of the whole process.

In the 2014 HKIWSC, with more than 1,500 wines from 35 countries being judged by 22 judges over five days, the awards have considerable merit.

International Award for Local Wine Producer

Trevor and Mary Dickinson of Dickinson Estate and Tammar Gully Wines, are extremely proud to have brought International recognition to the Blackwood Valley Wine Region.

They are now pursuing export opportunities in Hong Kong and mainland China with confidence in their wines, particularly as the trophy and ten of the medals were awarded for wine/food matching with Asian dishes.

Understandably, their winemaker, Coby Ladwig of Rockcliffe Wines in Denmark is equally proud.

Dickinson Estate and Tammar Gully Wines started in the wine industry in 1994, producing quality fruit for Goundrey Wines, then the Fosters Group and Alkoomi over a number of years before Rockcliffe Wines in Denmark began making wines for Tammar Gully in 2010.

In the past twelve months, the Dickinson Estate range has been produced with an export market in mind.

Australia Day Celebrations Council will host an Australia day Breakfast on Monday 26th January 2015.

An open invitation is extended to all residents. The breakfast will start at 8am at Sandakan Park with a flag raising ceremony. The activities will include a presentation to the winner of the Citizen of the Year, Sportsperson of the Year and Young Achiever of the Year.

Main Roads Main Roads will be sealing the Boyup Brook Donnybrook Road and Abel Street from just west of Banks Road through to Inglis Street commencing the 06/01/2015. Main road will be conducting a letter box drop to affected home owners and businesses. Expect minor traffic delays.

War Memorial – Abel Street median strip The Shire has been working with the local RSL on upgrades to the memorial ready for the 2015 Anzac Day services. The main improvements will be concrete paving to replace the uneven surface in front of the memorial, new flag poles, a tiered retaining wall on the northern side of the median strip (to match the tiered wall that runs part way along the northern side and around the eastern end), and new plantings. The RSL worked with school students to grow plants for these plantings which will include a rosemary hedge and a lavender hedge. Future works are planned for the rear of the memorial (west side) and this includes a native garden, two Lone Pine trees, some plants brought back from the first world war (donated by a local resident) and a bench seat (to be made by the local Men’s Shed group).

Boyup Brook Swimming Pool - Heating The Shire will soon be calling for expressions of interest for the design supply and install of suitable heating for the pool. This is the first step in a procuring process that will lead to tenders being called from a selected group of suppliers (i.e. from those who lodge an expression of interest and are selected to be in the tender pool).

EDITOR’S NOTE: Please note that the Shire Council Matters are printed as received and no changes are made or edited. Only formatting has occurred to fit the space.

The project is to heat the current pool facilities and is dependant on a third funding from the Shire, a third from the Department of Sport and Recreation, and a third from a community group. The project is expected to cost in excess of $300,000 and will be dependant on a business plan and funding.

The business plan will be completed once the Shire has details of what it is likely to select, in terms of the heating, what the up front costs will be and what the whole of life costs are expected to be.

Tenderers will be required to provide this information and the Shire Administration will do the business plan and the Council will assess it. The community group and the Shire have pledged funding for the project and a Department of Sport and Recreation grant has been applied for. Whilst it was hoped that the process may have allowed the heating to be in place this pool season, this is not likely now and so the plan is that it is in place for next year.

It is important to recognise the Heated Multi Purpose Therapeutic Pool Committee that has been raising funds for a number of years to achieve a heated pool facility. The community group will be working with Council on assessing the expressions of interest lodged and then the tenders.

Aged Accommodation Council has been working on pulling together an affordable and workable aged accommodation facility in Boyup Brook. Recent discussions and decision have centred on a facility near the existing Lodge.

Council manages two Crown Reserves and one Crown Grant where the Lodge has been established, and has been given hope that it may be able to have some of the Health Department’s Crown Reserve (where the Hospital is located) transferred to the Shire Reserve, to provide that amount of land it would require to build a number of independent living units. The benefit of this area is that the Shire already has control of the land and the new development could work with the Lodge operation for some aspects.

Council has looked at a number of villages and operating models and the Geegeelup Village, Bridgetown, model appears to be best suited for Boyup Brook. Here people purchase a lease for life and pay a small weekly contribution toward maintenance insurance etc.

The units are fully self contained two bedrooms, one bathroom, two toilet dwellings that are built and fitted out to a high standard. Geegeelup Village has minimal village facilities and relies on the town’s facilities, which would work well here where most facilities are underutilised and clubs, and other community groups, are constantly looking for new members.

Council has budgeted to raise the funds and start the project in 2014/15, and the process will be preceded by a business plan. The plan is to be developed over the next two months, put to Council and then to the community for comment, before going back to Council for adoption.

The plan will include a fairly massive load up front but has to show that the project becomes self sufficient within a relative short period of time. Looking at the operation of other villages, this aim should be achievable.

It should be noted that the process is contingent on Council seeing a sound business case for it and so is contingent on a number of milestones being met. The first being a business plan that indicates the project is achievable and will not be a financial burden for years to come.

Another is the selling of lifetime tenancies early in the process. It is hoped that some people would take up an offer to have input into design of the unit, colour schemes, wall and floor treatments, heating/cooling, kitchen cookers etc, and purchase off the plan.

The plan is to do a concept design of the whole development, with stages, as part of the business plan. The business plan will concentrate on stage one (perhaps 6 units) but give a flavour for the whole development.

Councillors Corner - Cr Norm Blackburn

I hope you have all enjoyed your Christmas break and I wish you all the best for the coming year in February this year. Council will be holding the Annual rate payers meeting.

I encourage you all to come along and ask any questions that the council can help you with. If you have any questions, a letter prior to the meeting would be helpful .This coming year I hope the Shire will make considerable progress with the new retirement village project, I would love to hear from anyone interested in this project especially if you would like to be a resident in the new facility.

This project was my main reason to rejoin Council at the special election held last year, I feel that it is one thing that our town needs to allow local residents to stay in town with their friends and to be able to live comfortably in a pleasant and safe environment.

Specifically, the new laws will:

Limit the number of passengers in a vehicle to the number of seatbelts available (where seat belts are part of the original fitment);

Prevent children less than seven years of age from riding in any vehicle that does not have a seat belt regardless of the age of the vehicle;

Restrict children less than seven years of age occupying the front seat of a vehicle with two or more rows of seats unless the rear seats are fully occupied by children less than seven years;

Restrict children less than four years of age occupying the front seat of a vehicle with two or more rows of seats.

With the recent amendments to the Road Traffic Act the fines for non wearing of seatbelts has risen significantly. The demerit points for seat belt offences are also now subject to double demerits over holiday periods

Hoon driving offences: Recently there has been some persons that thought it is ok to drive their vehicles in a manner that causes distress to others. These “hoon” drivers will be dealt with to the full extent of the appropriate legislation including the seizure of vehicles—Boyup Brook police have several persons of interest in regard to these offences and will be commencing prosecutions within this week.

Burglary Offences : There has been two burglary type offences in Boyup Brook in the last two months. Due to the new officer stationed at Boyup Brook, 1/C Pc Simpson, receiving forensic training prior to transferring to Boyup Brook, we were able to obtain forensic evidence from both offences which has resulted in the arrest of one person for one of the offences and assisting in inquiries for the other.

Blue Light Boyup Brook police can report another successful Blue light event on the 30/11/2014. The Halloween Disco attracted approximately 130 children. BOYUP BROOK POLICE

Traffic Issues Boyup Brook police over the last week have attended several traffic incidents which have highlighted areas that need to be brought to public attention.

A major crash on the Boyup Brook–Cranbrook Road resulted in the death of a passenger and the serious injury of another passenger neither of these persons were wearing seatbelts though the driver of the vehicle that was wearing a seatbelt suffered only minor injuries.

Boyup Brook police have recently also cautioned several motorists regarding child restraints in vehicles.

It is therefore timely to advise the following:

The Road Traffic Code Amendment Regulations (No 2) 2010 has significantly altered seatbelt offences in WA, placing greater onus on drivers and passengers of motor vehicles to wear a restraint.

These regulations came into operation on 1st October 2010.

In addition to ensuring passengers are restrained, drivers will also be responsible for ensuring children less than seven years of age are wearing an age appropriate restraint or booster seat and are positioned in the vehicle in compliance with the regulations.

Take Care Using Public Wi-Fi

Public Wi-Fi 'hotspots' in public places like cafés, airports, hotels and libraries are convenient but unlike your home computer, use of public hotspots involves security compromises. It is easy for other users to intercept your data, so be careful about what information you send or receive while connected. Try and limit activity when connected to a public Wi-Fi network to web browsing and avoid banking or any other activities that involve user password access.

Successful funding through the Foundation for Rural and Regional Renewal’s (FRRR) Caring for Ageing Rural Australians (CARA) has been achieved by the Country Music Club of Boyup Brook to help keep the Bush Poetry program fun and entertaining.

The Caring for Ageing Rural Australians (CARA) program is a targeted program, designed to support projects and activities that benefit and support older people living in small rural and remote communities. The project encourages positive and active ageing, community health and well-being and educational workshops.

Across the overall 30th year celebrations of the Boyup Brook Country Music Festival, presented by LiveLighter, many opportunities will be provided for people to participate, either as an active organiser, as a bush poet or to be part of a huge audience.

As quoted from the WA Bush Poets website “the art of bush poetry and yarn spinning is all about entertaining. It’s about telling a story and delivering the lines with just the right amount of humour, passion or feeling and sometimes, even with a touch of the theatrical to add to the spectacle - but mostly, it is just about getting up and having a go.”

“Two Short Sheilas” will be the highlight for 2015 as they perform their oh so tall tales as they reach for the stars with swag of bush comedy. “Two Short Sheilas” are Melanie Hall and Susan Carcary and are both multi-award winning entertainers.

John Best who is laid back and laconic and was a latecomer to Bush Poetry, performing other’s work early. With a number of achievements under his belt, he was successful at winning a trip to the US courtesy of Qantas Waltzing Matilda competition at Winton.

Performances will include Boyup Brook Citizen Lodge, Tennis Club showcase, Centre Stage in town, Harvey Dickson’s Country Music Centre Variety Showcase, Boyup Brook Club, Walk Up Bush Poetry – open mic, Bush Poetry workshops and not forgetting the huge Bush Poets Breakfast on Sunday morning.

The Country Music Club of Boyup Brook has been notified of successful funding through the Regional Arts Fund-Project Fund Community Category. This project is planned for 12th-15th February 2015 and will coincide with the 30th Boyup Brook Country Music Festival, presented by Live Lighter celebrations.

The Regional Arts Fund is an Australian Government initiative that supports sustainable cultural development in regional, remote and very remote Australia. There are three key components to this project: a Musicians Headquarters, Boyup Brook Speaks Panel and a Skills Development Workshop. Key creative artists such as Tania Kernaghan, Amber Joy Poulton will participate in this project.

Three different activities will combine and provide a comprehensive and extensive skills development program for emerging artists from regional and remote WA. The aim is that the project will be ‘owned’ by the participants, and there will be a real sense of purpose in achieving goals, unlocking potential and releasing inhibitions enabling them to enjoy a ‘total’ experience.

The ‘Musicians Headquarters’ is a place where the emerging artists can meet informally to discuss hot topics, network, share knowledge, co-write and jam. Be it a product, service, information for musicians or the music industry, the Musicians Headquarters will have it all.

The ‘Boyup Brook Speaks’ involves a guest panel of artists including plus host, Rachel Dillon to lead a discussion about the local and national country music scene and ask questions to kick things off. The host will ask the artists to talk about their experiences of x, y and z, how they got started, best and worst gigs, and sing a few songs each. The audience can then also ask questions and participate.

Tania and Ray Kernaghan will run the two hour structured Skills Development workshop with special topics of Stage Craft / Connecting with the Audience / Interviewing Skills / songwriting. They will pass on some great songwriting tips and inspire emerging artists as they talk of their musical influences, music creation, their extensive breadth of experience, motivations and writing processes. The skills development sessions are professional, very intensive and hands on and people will go away not only with a definite idea of where to go next, but practical tools to help them get there.

Troy Cassar-Daley will also hold a one hour workshop on the Sunday morning of the festival. It will be very exciting to have such high caliber artists participate and share their knowledge and skills. If you are interested in being part of the audience for these activities please call the Country Music Club office 9765 1657 or email [email protected]

Students Show Talent for Song Writing

During term three, the students in the Year 3/4 and 5/6 Classes entered the ACMF National Song writing Competition. This competition is open to every Primary and Secondary School, both public and private, across Australia.

The children were required to write their own original song by creating their own melody and lyrics. The majority of the term was spent working on compositions and then the students recorded the finished songs and sent them off to the judges (one of whom was “Timomatic”).

Three students from the Year 3/4 class Kida Lewis, Brooke Nield and Lily Sputore (also known as “The Rosa Girls”) were amongst the finalists in their section.

The group composed a very moving song titled “I Live On A Farm”. It was a very emotional song that the girls performed beautifully. BBDHS Music Teacher, Mrs Renee Knapp said, “Although they did not win their section, to achieve such high commendations from the judges is something to be very proud of.”

This is the first time students at Boyup Brook DHS have entered the competition and already many are showing a talent for song writing.

Mrs Knapp added, “I was blown away by some of their compositions and look forward to seeing their entries for the 2015 competition.” Bike Track a Hit

Early Childhood students at Boyup Brook DHS are thoroughly enjoying their new Bike Track and bikes.

The energetic Early Childhood Committee has vigorously fundraised during 2014 with a wide variety of activities to achieve this new addition.

Their fundraising combined with generous donations from the Boyup Brook DHS P&C and the IGA Community Chest has provided this wonderful new play equipment for students.

Rylington Park Scholarships

At the Boyup Brook DHS Graduation Ball ceremony, Rylington Park Committee member Steve Thompson presented four students with scholarships to further their studies in agriculture. The successful students were: Tomas Burkett, Tom Keightley, McKenzi Nix and Kyle Ricetti who all plan to attend Agricultural Colleges in 2015.

The committee initiated the scholarship three years ago to promote Eric Farley’s vision to engage and support the young people of Boyup Brook in agricultural pursuits and to promote their return to the community.

The funding of $1000 per year of study in Year 11 and 12 is a significant contribution to college fees.

Community Christmas for All Ages

With the Salvation Band playing, people chatting, kids playing, stalls to browse and food to arouse the appetite, the centre of Boyup Brook was a hive of activity for the Shire of Boyup Brook’s Community Christmas Celebrations on December 5.

With extra attention the Tourist Centre and surrounds sparkled. With half of Abel Street closed off a variety of stall holders set up in the medium strip while the shops along Abel Street stayed open late and did a roaring trade.

The Salvation Army Band from Bunbury first visited the Boyup Brook Citizens’ Lodge to entertain residents and patients from the hospital before heading to the town centre. The Band along with the Boyup Brook choir and the students from both schools all impressed the 250 strong crowd. Everyone thoroughly enjoyed the music as well as participating in the ‘Carols singalong’.

“The Boyup Brook choir did an amazing job leading the carols and thanks to John Roberts for his time with the sound gear,” said organiser, Daly Winter.

The Shire Councillors were kept busy on the barbecue providing a very tasty sausage sizzle and handing out free ice creams to everyone.

Father Christmas then arrived in style, in the big red fire truck with bags of lollies and presents to hand out much to the delight of the 120 odd children.

“Thanks for everyone who contributed on the day,” said Daly. You have helped make this an evening to remember for the whole community.”

Seniors Enjoy Annual Lunch

The Seniors’ Christmas luncheon was once again well supported and appreciated by all who attended. Ninety eight people sat down for lunch in the Boyup Brook Town Hall.

The guests were entertained by local singers, Keely Morgan and St Mary’s School and dancers, Caitlin Atherton, Sophie Hilder and Kayla Clark all introduced by MC, Rhonda Parker.

It was a community effort in setting up the hall, decorating the tables, producing the delicious meal under the guidance of head chef, Kate Cumming and cleaning up afterwards. Waiting on the tables were the students from the Boyup Brook District High School.

Each guest received a scratchie, courtesy of Lisa Martin and Ashleigh Clark, as they entered. On the table was a gift bag from Blossoms gifts, bonbonniere made by Janis Beadle and Kaye Kerruish had donated a decorated wine glass for each guest to take home. Boyup Brook Post Office and Blossoms gifts also gave out door prizes.

Thanks must go to the long list of sponsors who enable this event to be such a success: Shire of Boyup Brook, Boyup Brook IGA, D'orsogna and Harvey Fresh, Kate Cumming, Beulah Wines, Blossoms Gifts, Janis Beadle, Boyup Brook Post Office, Kaye Kerruish, Boyup Brook Lions for their cakes, Lisa Martin and Ashleigh Clark, Kojonup Bus Service and Lee Holland in getting many of the guest to the venue and home again.

Fun Times at the Club

2014 was a huge success for the Boyup Brook Club!

Not only were the band nights with ‘Frosty and the Iceholes’ a great hit and pumping (yes! we’ve asked them back next year), we had an amazing turn out for our huge Christmas party, along with all the other events we had throughout the year.

The karaoke nights were a blast! The fancy dress Halloween party was a real scream! And much more fun was had by all.

The Boyup Brook Club is up and rocking. So why not come along and join us for next year’s great adventures? We guarantee it will be a hoot and a half, with so much planned for 2015!

We would love to see you there along with the family, kids and all. Discounts given to financial members.

New members always welcome.

Blinds for Lodge Verandah

Peter Marshall, Graham Calley and Philippe Kaltenrieder, from Future Boyup Brook, presented Jenni Mackie with a cheque to assist with purchase of blinds for the front verandah at the Boyup Brook Lodge.

Jenni is President of the Boyup Brook Health Services Auxiliary, and was delighted to complete the screening of the verandah before the full heat of summer.

The Future Boyup Brook Fund was established as a form of self-reliance for our town and wider Shire. There is not always a government grant waiting when the need arises, and at that time, small towns have to fall back on their own resources. As people put back into their community, the town is strengthened and its future is secured.

Future Boyup Brook is a worthy recipient of regular donations from everyone in the community, so that over the years, a large capital base is grown, and the earnings can be continually distributed to projects such as this one.

We hope that this example encourages others to contribute; as they feel financially able, at retirement, or in their wills. Above: Future Boyup Brook representatives Philippe Kaltenrieder, Peter Marshall and Graham

Auxiliary Reflects on 2014

Throughout 2014 we have assisted with the installation of eight blinds across the front of the Lodge. The first four were paid for by Auxiliary funds that had been raised and donated.

The Auxiliary then applied for funding from the Shire of Boyup Brook and Future Boyup Brook to complete the front verandah.

Thank you to those two bodies for their willing responses, as without their assistance we would not have been able to complete this very necessary upgrade to the Lodge.

The front verandah remains much cooler now and residents are able to have a view through the blinds to stop that “closed in” feeling in the heat of summer.

We would again like to thank Brendon Sullivan of “Finished Homes Australia”, Busselton, for his assistance with the supply and installation of the blinds.

The Auxiliary was able to provide a set of magnetic orientation stickers for use in the day lounge at the hospital. Long term residents are now able to easily see the date, weather and seasons.

We also funded four books for the Surgery to hand out patients wanting more information on their condition.

We held our AGM in September and our office bearers are now: President - Jenni Mackie Secretary - Margaret Hester Treasurer - Lynne Schreurs

Please do not hesitate to contact any of us if you feel there is a need within Boyup Brook Health Services which the Auxiliary may be able to assist with.

Our Christmas Raffle held on 5th December raised $630. Thank you to the community of Boyup Brook for your great support.

The prizes and winners were: Decorated Christmas Cake, donated by Betty Watters Won by Barb Treloar

3 bottles of wine donated by Sue Abbey Won by Ian Watmore

Table Lamp donated by Sue Abbey Won by Angie

Painting donated by Sandy Chambers Won by Pauline Caldwell

Miniature Christmas Room donated by Lyn Baldwin Won by Ken Waters

I would like to extend our sincere thanks to the generous donors of the Raffle prizes.

Our next meeting will be at 2pm on Wednesday March 18th 2015, at the hospital.

We will put a notice in the March Gazette to invite community members to the meeting.

Daniel Continues to Perform

Local boy Daniel Jennings, continues to do well in his chosen career as an apprentice heavy duty mechanic (technician).

Daniel who works for CJD Kenworth in Perth, recently was named as one of the top three finalists in the Kenworth section of the "Paccar Australia Technician of the Year" competition. This is an Australia wide competition run annually by Paccar, and consists of four tests through the year, which all Paccar dealerships (Kenworth and DAF) mechanics and apprentices must complete.

Daniel will now travel to Melbourne in March for the finals, which consist of both theory, and practical tests to determine the winner.

While in Melbourne Daniel will get to tour the Paccar Kenworth factory, and also attend the Formula one Grand Prix, courtesy of Paccar Australia.

It is very unusual for an apprentice to reach the finals.

Well done Daniel.

Do you know of a former Boyup Brook local who is achieving great things in their chosen field?

We would love to hear about it, so would the community!

Love Local Food and Wine?

The Taste of the Blackwood is an annual market style event held in winter in Bridgetown, designed to raise awareness and appreciation of the outstanding food and wine produced in the Blackwood Valley region.

It is a not‑for-profit event designed to encourage visitors to actually take time to engage with local producers while they also enjoy free tastings, cooking demonstrations and workshops.

Taste of the Blackwood is organised by a small Committee of friendly locals who are passionate about showcasing Blackwood Valley produce to both other locals and visitors to the region.

2015 will be the seventh time this event has been presented, with each year seeing improvements.

The Blackwood Valley includes Boyup Brook, home to so many fabulous food and wine producers. Despite this, Boyup Brook has traditionally been under-represented at this event.

It would be great to find a Boyup Brook local who will attend monthly committee meetings and contribute their enthusiasm to help continue growing the event.

If this is you, please email Libby at [email protected] or phone 0419 090 869 to discuss.

Seeking Farm for Trial

The Blackwood Basic Group is looking for a proactive farmer who would like to be involved in their innovative three year trial to look at a combination of stubble crunching and liquid fish emulsion in order to breakdown stubble. This could be a possible alternative to the conventional field burning technique.

Soil sampling in six comparative plots over approximately three hectares wil l monitor the differences in soil physical, chemical and biological processes as well as harvest performance over the next three cropping seasons. Additionally, a cost benefit analysis will be undertaken to evaluate the impacts to the farmer's all important bottom line.

The project is in partnership and will have access to the skills of agronomist, Deb Archdeacon from Agronomica as well as the University of WA (UWA) who will be analysing the results and developing the report.

The BBG coordinated a preliminary demonstration in 2012-13 on four properties in the Qualeup using fish emulsion on canola and wheat, which indicated positive differences warranting further investigation in this alternative practice.

This trial is due to start this cropping season with the first round of soil sampling being carried out by the BBG project officer after the area has been harvested. If you would like to be involved, please contact Sara Dulex on 9765 1555 or 0474 795 184 ASAP for more information.

Cook Book Produced by Bowlers

When the hail storm in November left some ugly marks on the bowling rink in Boyup Brook, the bowlers knew that they would need to find some funds to repair it.

Three industrious bowlers, Beryl Bowron, Coral Peterson and Ginny Mitchell, were already underway with a fundraising project. They decided that the one thing the ladies did best was cooking and the idea of compiling the bowlers’ best recipes into cookbook naturally followed.

“These are well tried and true recipes,” said Ladies President, Ginny Mitchell. “In fact some were so popular that the same recipes were submitted more than once.”

The Boyup Brook Bowling Club is lucky to have as a member, Lesley Geers, well-known local artist who has designed a caricature cover for the ‘Golden Oldie Bowler’s Cookbook’.

“We are very appreciative of Greenline Ag for the assistance they made available to us in printing the recipe book,” said Ginny, “and a very special thankyou to Lynne Brenner for the time she spent putting the project together.

The books have been so popular that the first print run has sold out. Another quantity will be printed early in 2015 and will be able to be purchased from the Boyup Brook Bowling Club or the Boyup Brook Club.

RFDS Update

Sadly we are writing our last report, and by the way, our banking was up to $120,000.

John and I felt that it was about time to let others have the shop, as long as they also donate the RFDS cause, that we had started 3½ years ago.

So imagine how lucky and fortunate we were or are to have Jenny and Fred Iley take over and donate their time. The shop is looking so lovely, clean and cared for. A real treat.

Please continue to support them we will miss seeing you all, but we are now retired and retarted.

All the very best always to you all and many thanks again.

John and Marie

Blitz Around the Brook

Two enthusiastic parents have come up with a fundraising activity with a difference to raise funds for the Boyup Brook District High School’s Year 6 camp in 2015.

Kirstie Clark and Liz Roney have devised ‘Blitz Around the Brook’ which will be an ‘Amazing Race’ style event that the whole community is invited to participate in.

Entrants will be sent on different courses, all completing activities, earning points and learning about Boyup Brook’s history, as well before heading back to the pit stop for the final activity.

The finish line will be at the BBDHS Primary School site where the final results and prizes will be awarded as part of the 2015 Welcome Barbecue on Friday, February 6th.

Teams are to be made up of two to five members, with at least one adult and one child aged between 5 and 16. Teams must select a team leader who is responsible for all children on the team.

Some challenges require the youngest or oldest member to complete the challenges.

The cost will be $50 a team, or $20 per adult and $10 per child. Teams will receive a ‘race pack’ and refreshments throughout the race.

During the activity, you must not break any laws, travel by car or cheat other teams, otherwise disqualification will occur. Please be respectful of other teams, community members and property. You won’t win a million dollars, but it is meant to be a fun day out to enjoy with friends and family.

Take notes on every bit of information you find, it could come in handy. Think outside the box and pay attention to things around you as you go about the town, no bit of information is too trivial…benches have interesting facts on them too!!

Be aware that if something seems to easy, it may not give you big points…

All information and entry forms will be available from the BBDHS webpage and from school offices.

Nomigup School was situated 25 kilometres from Bridgetown on the Bridgetown-Kojonup road, on the property now owned by Noel and May Klopper.

The school, known as ‘Scammell’s School’, was opened on the third of February, 1930 in a large room in the family home. Mrs Scammell was educated in England, and taught in a school in West India before migrating to Western Australia.

Of all the concerned parents who applied for a government assisted school, only one family actually attended the school, namely the Scammells, Geoff, Jim and David (Ted). All others had made other arrangements to get schooling by the time the school opened. However there were other families, who attended Nomigup School in the Scammell home, namely Bill, Ted, and Peg Gale; the Wardle-Johnson family - Scott, Don, Beth, Robert; Seeber family - Olive, Pat, Derick and Hester family - Wallace, Malcom, Colin.

There was a temporary closure of the school October 1936 to February 1937, due to the death of Don Wardle-Johnson who contracted meningitis. The school room had to be fumigated, and the school closed for a period. Mrs Scammell also was having health problems.

The school closed in December 1938.

Mr and Mrs Scammell relocated to Boyup Brook township where Mrs Scammell took up a teaching position at the school. However her health deteriorated, and unfortunately she passed away.

Mr Scammell was a contributor to the small schools journal that was circulated to the small government assisted schools he wrote under the name of Wallace Spencer, and many of his stories and verse will be recorded in the history of schools being compiled of the early schools in the area.

He was the reporter for the Boyup Brook Bulletin for many years, until he moved to York where he lived out his last years.

Assistance for Regional Businesses

Nationals Member for the South West, Colin Holt MLC has welcomed the announcement of grants of up to $25,000 for eligible small to medium-sized businesses based in regional Western Australia through the State Government’s Industry Facilitation and Support Program (IFSP).

The second regional round of the IFSP, funded by Royalties for Regions, is designed to support activities which assist regional businesses in increasing their competitiveness as suppliers of products, services and works to government and major commercial markets.

This Royalties for Regions grant supports our regional businesses to build organisational capacity and gives them an opportunity to engage with new markets.

The first $400,000 round of funding was presented to 31 companies, resulting in the creation of more than 20 new jobs, six apprenticeship positions and generating almost 70 contracts worth more than $21 million.

Grants were used for the upgrade of facilities, purchasing of new equipment, sourcing advice from expert consultants or specialised training for staff.

The second round of the program had been extended to increase the amount of funding from $20,000 to $25,000 and expanded eligible sectors to include Agribusiness and Tourism.

“This is a great opportunity to grow your business by investing in new technology, staff training or expert advice so I encourage small to medium-sized businesses in the South West to apply,” said Mr Holt.

For information on how to apply visit: http://www.commerce.wa.gov.au/industry-and-innovation/industry-facilitation-and-support-program-ifsp-regional-round-2

Legume Trial for Productivity

A new perennial legume that can potentially turn unproductive sands into profitable areas is being trialled by Murdoch University. The four year trial is supported by the South West Catchment Council (SWCC) and while only in its first year the results are proving very promising, creating an air of anticipation.

The legume, known as Lebeckia, thrives on silver loams and deep gutless sands and persists over summer. The deep sands are often non wetting, lack ground cover, have poor productivity and are prone to wind erosion.

Professor John Howieson from the Centre of Rhizobium Studies at Murdoch University said scientists had been searching for a something to treat silver loam soils for twenty years and that Lebeckia, a shrub legume, has had the most exciting results to date.

“Our research has shown that Lebeckia improves carbon content, NPK nutrition and soil fertility to the point where it can be much more profitable for cropping or animal enterprises,” Professor Howieson said.

“Our discovery is significant. We believe it has the potential to turn one million hectares of land in Western Australia and also New South Wales into usable farming land.

“It provides areas of grazing and shelter for sheep and because unlike Tagasaste you don’t have to cut and carry it, you can graze it and use it through the autumn/winter feed gap.

Professor Howieson is working closely with Global Pastures who is providing agronomic advice, and SWCC which has provided funding for continuing research over the next four years.

“There are a lot of soils within the SWCC catchment area that have limited options for use and are not able to be used for farming.”

Over the next four years Murdoch researchers will work with SWCC to measure the impact of establishing Lebeckia on the soil health of non-wetting, deep sandy soils. The project is designed to assess the soil fertility benefits of Lebeckia, to improve methods of establishment and to harvest seed to enable larger sowings.

“We are really excited about Lebeckia, it is shaping up to be an affordable option to rehabilitate these sandy areas as well as providing excellent sheep feed,” SWCC Project Manager Danielle Short said.

“It is hoped that after a four year rotation of Lebeckia that either conventional pastures or cropping will be viable on these soils again.”

For more information on the Lebeckia trial and other sustainable agriculture trials please visit www.agtrialsites.com

More news from the SWCC can be viewed on the website: www.swccnrm.org.au

This project is supported by the South West Catchments Council, through funding from the Australian Government’s National Landcare Program and the Government of Western Australia.

Finishing Strong - 'I must be about My Father's business.' Luke 2:49

If the word ‘quit’ is part of your vocabulary, chances are that the word ‘finish’ isn’t. Finishing means staying on the job until it’s done. It’s about accountability and action, because even when you’re on the right track you’ll get run over if you just sit there.

High achievers will tell you that life takes on meaning when you take responsibility for your actions and pursue your goals with purpose and passion. Nothing compares to ‘the rush’ of crossing the finish line. The fact is, nobody remembers who finished second, except the guy who finished second!

Co–authors B.J. Gallagher and Steve Ventura said the ten most important words in finishing strong are: ‘I won’t wait for others to take the first step.’ The nine most important: ‘If it is to be, it’s up to me.’ Eight: ‘If not me, who? If not now, when?’ Seven: ‘Let me have a go at it.’ Six: ‘I will not pass the buck.’ Five: ‘You can count on me.’ Four: ‘It IS my job.’ Three: ‘Just do it!’ Two: ‘I will.’ And the most important word: ‘Me.’

Jesus was the greatest finisher of all time. At age twelve, He told His parents, ‘I must be about My Father’s business.’

Later He told His disciples, ‘I must work the works of Him who sent Me.’ (John 9:4) Facing the cross, He said, ‘For this cause I was born.’ (John 18:37) And just before He died, He said, ‘It is finished!’ (John 19:30) Then, having earned the right to become our advocate with God, He went back to Heaven and ‘sat down’ (Hebrews 10:12). Mission accomplished! So focus on finishing strong!

“A CHANGE OF MIND!”

I was quite young when I determined

I’d had more than enough –

The way Mum and Dad treated me

I thought was more than tough!

I had to do the dishes and even make my bed –

And sweep leaves from the porch!

No wonder I thought I was misled!!

I even had to feed the hens,

And chase away the rooster!

This sort of treatment was unjust,

Not what I had been used to!

But when that Dad and Mum of mine,

Brought home ice-creams in a cone.

I thought perhaps I’d wait a while

And so I chose to stay at home!

Poems by Chick

“A SHORT ADVENTURE”

Billie and Lily decided that they

Wouldn’t waste their time at school today.

So they hid their school-lunches under a tree.

And said ‘This is the life for you and me!”

They hiked along for a mile or so

And then they heard a dog’s ‘bow-wow’.

There stood a blood-hound, big as a hill,

Billie and Lily stood ever so still –

The dog took a step, they decided to run.

Their home-ward journey had surely begun!

They soon found their school lunch,

And set off at a trot,

To go adventuring they soon forgot.

They decided that it would much better be

To go to school and learn A.B.C.

Tough Start to Cricket Season

It has been a tough start to the 2014/2015 cricket season with the boys coming close to victory on a number of occasions. Although they are still searching for their first victory of the season, it has been great to see the development of so many up-and-coming youngsters who are all keen cricketers.

At the half way mark of the season a couple of individuals are in contention for leading the association in a number of areas. Jacob Maw is certainly the premier bowler of the competition, leading the Association with 13 wickets in the 45 over games. This has included three games where he has taken three wickets each game. Jacob is also second in catches taken.

Scott Tweedie scored the second most runs in the association for the T20 competition, averaging over 50. He is also currently in second position for most runs in the association with over 250 runs scored.

A few players have also recently reached, or are approaching significant individual milestones for the Boyup Brook Cricket Club in the Donnybrook-Blackwood Association.

Scott Tweedie recently played his 200th game (the most for a Boyup player in this association), whilst Michael Wallace filled in recently and in the process played his 100th game. Nigel Brittain recently played his 50th game for the Club. Ben Mead took his 100th catch for the Club, and Tristan Mead has currently taken 199 wickets and will be looking to be the first player for Boyup in this Association to take 200 wickets. Youngster Jacob Maw is fast approaching his 50th wicket with 44 currently.

The wet weather has played havoc to the home games this year. As a result there are five home games in January and February.

Please see below for the January dates and come down to support the boys.

On The Green Tennis Top Shots

The start of the tennis season has been full of activity from the Opening Day, through to the junior Christmas Party and the introduction of Sizzling Saturdays.

The Mixed Doubles Handicap event held on December 14 was sponsored by Boyup Brook Tyre Service and had seven pairs compete. The self-handicapping system produced a very even competition with some fantastic tennis played throughout the day. The winners were Graham Bergin and Jenny Aird, with Jack Wilson and Merridee Waters the runner-up.

The annual Christmas party was held on December 20 and a big thanks to Boyup Brook IGA for their continued support of this event.

The committee has been very active this season in trying to bring the Club’s juniors and seniors together. This can be seen through the combined fixture list, combined events and also the purchase of playground equipment (see below). There are several other items to be added to this over the coming months. The Club has also purchased a table-tennis table which has been enjoyed by all ages.

Sizzling Saturdays Over the school holiday period (until January 31), tennis will be played on Saturday from 2pm as part of the ‘Sizzling Saturday’ initiative. Juniors, with an accompanying adult, are welcome to join in.

The tennis club also welcomes new members of any age and skill level.

Ladies Singles Championship On Thursday November 27, the ladies played at 9.00am with their Singles Championship on an overcast day with continual light showers.

Despite the miserable conditions the three rounds were completed on the day with some close matches. The following Wednesday in much better weather the competition was completed.

The event is sponsored by Ian Kugler and the winner for this season was a delighted Susanne Connor who won all her games. Men’s League Trials On Sunday November 30, Barry Uren attended the Blackwood/Leeuwin League trials at Cowaramup and was duly selected to go onto the League Championship Fours in March.

Boyup Brook Fours Carnival This event was held on Sunday December 7 with the bowling green filled to capacity.

The weather was excellent and the event went well thanks to the organisation of the Match Committee. One game was played in the morning after which players enjoyed lunch at the Boyup Brook Club.

Thanks go to Blue, Gina and Kate for looking after everyone so well. After the lunch break, two more games were played followed by a real “country afternoon tea” organised by our Convenor Susanne Connor and her helpers.

By this time the results were ready and the winner for the day was a Collie team of Phil and Wendy Fettis, and Syd and Gail Riley. Second place went a Manjimup team of Doug and Linda Prosser, Dawn Peos and Paul Wood, with third place going to a Pemberton team skipped by Felix Ditri.

Men’s Variety Pairs A men’s event was held on Sunday December 14 and organised by the Ladies Captain where they played three short games of pairs in different formats with the players receiving a “scratchie” for their efforts.

The winning combination for the day was Robin White with the help of Bob Samwell and Frank Palmer, with second being Orest Skraha and John Shepherdson. Ladies Pennants On their last game this year the ladies won both their games and received maximum points for our Club. After a short break over Christmas they will resume competition on the first Tuesday in January. The last round for the season is scheduled to finish in early February.
