Negative responses to observation

• "A hard won relationship can be lost with outsiders in the classroom."

• "Big brother is watching you."

• “Observation is putting the cart before the horse. Shouldn't less experienced teachers be observing their seniors rather than vice-versa?"

• "I feel very self-conscious and there is always a fear of embarrassment if things go wrong."

• "Observations are really a bit of a charade as both teacher and pupils are usually on their best behaviour.“

• “Observation is an extremely threatening and demotivating experience.”

• “Observation is just a paper exercise by managers.”

• “I get too nervous and don’t teach to my true ability”.

What observation will not be

• Observation will not be judgemental• Observation will not be graded• Observation will not be linked to pay• Students will not be asked to ‘grade’

teachers

professional development• Peer observation can be a valuable

part of the observation process • Self-observation and reflection can

also be part of professional development

Page 8: Definition Observations: ‘the purposeful examination of teaching and/or learning events through the systematic processes of data collection and analysis

prepared by appraiser and appraisee• The observer should be competent to observe• The observer(s)) should be trained• The observees should be trained• Adequate notice for observation will always be given• Supporting documentation should be provided• Annual Observation should be conducted on a one-to-one

basis• Observations should not be re-scheduled if at all possible• Adequate time must be provided• Principles and procedures should be explicit to all• Confidentiality must be adhered to
