Observation• Why observe?

Observation• Teachers teach, therefore in order to

contribute to teacher development then pedagogic practice should be the subject of observation.

Negative responses to observation

• "A hard won relationship can be lost with outsiders in the classroom."

• "Big brother is watching you."

• “Observation is putting the cart before the horse. Shouldn't less experienced teachers be observing their seniors rather than vice-versa?"

• "I feel very self-conscious and there is always a fear of embarrassment if things go wrong."

• "Observations are really a bit of a charade as both teacher and pupils are usually on their best behaviour.“

• “Observation is an extremely threatening and demotivating experience.”

• “Observation is just a paper exercise by managers.”

• “I get too nervous and don’t teach to my true ability”.

What observation will not be

Observation – what and when

• All teachers should be observed• Observation should be systematic• Observation is a necessary part of

Golden rules of observation• Observation and interviews should be carefully planned and

prepared by appraiser and appraisee• The observer should be competent to observe• The observer(s)) should be trained• The observees should be trained• Adequate notice for observation will always be given• Supporting documentation should be provided• Annual Observation should be conducted on a one-to-one

basis• Observations should not be re-scheduled if at all possible• Adequate time must be provided• Principles and procedures should be explicit to all• Confidentiality must be adhered to

be doing many of the teacher observations assissted by other experienced staff
