• Questions

OSC location Ålesund

OSC NMK

HIALS

OSC an Icon of the Møre maritime cluster

In 2005 OSC started as an innovative university “spinoff company” and now has developed into a world leading professional and mature company and today OSC is still breaking new limits.

10 years of OSC

Solution so real you forget you are in a simulator

It is easy to know what a good simulator is… You forget you are in one. Rich environment (Real equipment/amazing visuals (depth of field)) & Real physics

A few key points from the last year

Key developments in OSC

• All new graphics engine (unity3D)

• All new real physics engine

• Integrated 2 WROV Sims and 1 Obs ROV

• All new Anchor handling simulator

• Many virtual prototyping projects (incl Aker solutions)

• Worlds first subsea integrated simulator

Recap: One giant leap into Subsea -Integrated operations

Simulation of the installation and service for the whole subsea setup. • 2 Full WROV (+obs ROV) • Full crane simulator for the SHS • 360° Bridge of NSG with RRM DP • OCS station (8 screens) • Instructor station • Debrief room All working together

Statoil compression project simulation

Recap on the problem? “Lowering a 400 ton unit 260m into a template on the sea bed and getting it placed correctly to a few mm´s while a vessel is holding on DP in wave heights of 4.5m Hs”

The challenges

“Neither the real task nor the simulation have ever been done before. Or anything like it…”

• The SHS (special handling system) has never been used before.

• The installation procedure was in development

• Equipment not finished

• Control systems for SHS were not complete

• Designs of modules are changing

• In short everything is changing all the time.

How we solved the system: Bridge

Adding new vessels is normal business for OSC however the NSG added some new challenges for OSC • 5 Voith Schneider (VS) Propellers and 1 tunnel thruster • 160m long 30m wide… • First time RRM DP has been integrated to VS • Correct hydrodynamic modelling in different sea states and working in

4.5m Hs (Significant wave height)

Voith Schneider

North sea giant captain testing the sim..

On the 14 may 2014 OSC invited the Captain of the NSG to visit OSC and test the sim. Captain GIANT.. We were confident our maths was correct. We felt it seemed correct to us But we were nervous.. The Captain tested factors we had never been told about from how he had seen the vessel perform. For example: • Going from full speed to full stop using

all the VS power in half the length of the vessel…

To OSC relief the vessel performed just as expected. The Captain was impressed and excited.

How we solved the system: SHS

OSC have delivered crane simulators world wide for all types of offshore Cranes. However the Special handling System (SHS) is a never been done before solution. Units all to big for a moon pool. Simulation of a system before it is finished. Virtual prototyping… OSC have worked closely with Axtech so as new drawings where developed we constantly updated our solution. We have also programmed our own simple version of the control system to fill the gap while the real system was being developed. Understanding of the complex wire systems and making sure our physics system handles this correctly Programing of Active heave and constant tension and communication of this between all simulators..

How we solved the system: OCS

Offshore construction supervisor (OCS) is the control

station for the whole operation. Normally this would be an office on board the vessel with a set of screens for cctv from each station. OSC set this up in the lower part of our dome this allowed the OCS to have the screens but also see live the scenario around them in the 360 dome. Due to our advanced software Architecture it was easy for us to take feeds from each station. We also had to create a copy of a survey screen allowing following of all components in 2d and measurement tools.

Mission control: No one in the project moves a muscle unless told to by the OCS. They are in total control of the procedure. You can hear the tension and the fast conversation between all parties as the procedure hits critical parts.

How we solved the system: Models

When you are simulating a system that is still under development it is vital that there is tight communication between the companies involved. Statoil, Aker and OSC have been working very tightly together with weekly reporting throughout the project. OSC built our 3D models in a new way to allow us to update them with ease when needed. The models have changed thoughout the process.

How we solved the system: WROV´s

Before OSC started this project with Statoil we were well on the way to be the first company in the world to deliver an integrated WROV simulator. In this project we have delivered 2 WROV and 1 Obs ROV. The simulation part was hard but the integration between all the ROV, SHS, OCS and bridge was harder.

Solving the system: Training

A simulator solution is nothing without a good training and instructor solutions. OSC has worked tightly with the University collage Aalesund (AAUC) for over 10 years. Having this joint experience allowed AAUC to work with Statoil and Technip and build a very effective training solution within a short time scale.

Value of simulation

This Statoil project is the first of its kind. Thoughout the process simulation has proven its worth. • In the design phase having to think though simulation is key “Virtual prototyping” • The simulator is a test platform for solutions • Creation of procedures is so much easier in a simulator than on paper • Common understanding of the operation is gained • Problems can be solved before going offshore • Reduced risk to equipment and people • Cost of simulation is so small compared with the savings

Future flexible layout concept

Small simulator clusters can be used standalone or integrated. They can also be used for many types of simulator training. AB´s, Vessel (AFT or FWD), DP, Winch, Seismic

Large simulators can be used for. AHT, PSV, NAV, WINCH, BRM, ERM, DP, Subsea and connected together to allow large training solutions.

What next..

“Leapfrog” Innovation! Jump past all others in the market

Leapfrog Innovation!

Standard incremental development steps

Impossible innovation leap

What could be possible in 20 years time

How do we make this possible now. A product at least 5-10 years in front of competitors

What of the impossible could be possible

Current leading product

Chasing competitors

TIME

The impossible jump- unmanned vessels

What is possible from the impossible.

What steps can we make if we use this as an impossible concept.

• Having cameras on vessel feeding images back to a land based bridge (sim Centre). Giving an Augmented reality.

• Linking planning and real equipment feeds from vessel to Sim centre. (Briefing/planning interactive mapping table)

• Allowing land team and vessel team to communicate and work together in a integrated way

Onshore Mission control…

Augmented reality

Satellite communication

Real vessel in the fleet

Equipment mirror of vessel

Cameras

Interlinked (all vessels rigs and Sim.) Briefing / De-briefing Planning table (multi touch and sound/mics)

Planning table

What advantage does this give us

• Training centres (Sim centres) can be the knowledge base for a fleet of vessels / full operation

• Training crews can follow and take part in real operations.

• Top captains(“Admirals”) can become key instructors and a land based resource to all vessels in the fleet. Linking training back into the real operations.

• In complex operations Industry experts can become part of the team from a Sim Centre.

• When a difficult scenario arises it can be simulated to allow the vessel to take the best solution forward.

• Manufacturer view into vessels to give remote service and support.
