Born and bred in Newcastle, Kenny is currently Director of Food at Rockliffe Hall Hotel in Hurworth, near Darlington. He also co-stars on Saturday morning TV and has twice had winning dishes on the BBC’s Great British Menu, shooting to fame in 2009, when his beef salad starter was voted the best. A year later, his mackerel with gooseberries was selected as the winner of the fish course on the same show, earning the dish a place at the National Trust banquet, which was attended by the Prince of Wales. Kenny visited Tenlands to commission their new kitchen, which was installed at the end of last year. He chatted with some of the residents and enjoyed a glass of bubbly before cutting the ribbon to officially open the new kitchen. Tenlands Home Manager, Victoria Lee commented, “Kenny was very compli- mentary of our kitchen and our home in general and we would like to thank him very much for taking the time to come and visit us.” Chef Kenny Atkinson, along with Tenlands Home Manager, Victoria Lee, officially opens the home’s new kitchen. Durham County Council is launching the campaign which will focus on 15 target areas where dog fouling has been reported as a particular problem. In each of the areas, the council will be carrying out a mix of education and enforcement activities to remind people about being a responsible pet owner. There will be new temporary signs in target areas to highlight awareness of the problem, events offering free dog microchip- ping, education sessions in schools, promotion of the green dog walkers’ scheme and a golden ticket compe- tition to reward responsible behaviour. Neighbourhood wardens and police community support officers will carry out increased patrols and will issue fixed penalty notices to those who fail to pick up after their dog. Ian Hoult, neighbourhood protection manager at Durham County Council, said, “We know that the vast majority of dog owners are responsible and that it is a minority of people who don’t clean up after their pet. We would urge residents to report dog fouling to us, providing details such as the time, date and location of the incident as well as a description of the dog and owner if possible. Poetry CornerLife is what you make it

by Nancy Hardy

Jimmy Taylor’s letter in the Chapter

What can I say?

Re-kindling memories of long-ago days.

A child of eight of girls and boys

Xmas time brought many home-made toys.

The oven shelf heating I remember it well

If you stubbed your toe it hurt like h...!

With a shortage of shelving a brick did the trick.

Once again you made sure the covering was thick

Food rationing, home-made broth and good

home baking.

All hands on board to help with the making.

Home-made mats “clippie” or “proddy”

Nice woollen clippings, an old sack marked out in

patterns

Your avoided materials (if you had them) no silks

and no satins!

Central heating in a four-bedroom house

Often as cold as a tomb

Was an open fire in the living room

To toast in front of it was nice

As a form of heating this had to suffice.

A child of a large family, what was it like?

I never went hungry but never had a bike!

A change of clothing or hand-me-downs.

No money available to go shopping in town.

Happy days I remember when I was a tot.

Was I deprived? No, I think not.

Valley Wrought Iron

February 1st marked Dignity Awareness Day and, to show support for the campaign, Chilton Care Centre celebrated by holding a spa and pamper day. All residents enjoyed the activities which took place as the day compiled of foot and hand massages, nail

art, foot spas and total relaxation. The organiser of the day explained, “All residents thoroughly enjoyed themselves, but it was extra special as we were positively acknowledging the campaign to promote Dignity Awareness, which is not only extremely

important in our care envi-ronment but also out in the community.” Overall, the day was described as a massive success and Chilton Care Centre, which already has Dignity Champions in place to promote awareness, will continue their work towards the campaign.

LettersHave your say...

Dear Editor,

I have to disagree with Mr Taylor “all being equal and needing to scrounge and scrape, having nothing together.” [Issue 609]

We were so ignorant then of many of the so-called luxuries, e.g. ipod, email, phone, laptop, kindle and Wii, plus designer handbags and Ugg boots!

As children we revelled in skipping, hopscotch, marbles then in bad weather we played ludo, snakes & ladders, shove halfpenny. Then pro-gressing to the realm of home perming. Life was full of challenge and surprise. We had hope.

Today is not so certain. The young live for today, they are brainwashed into believing that luxuries are necessities. In those far off days we had tramps “Knights of the road”. Now folk of all ages live rough - “down and out”.

We may be born equal, but each one of us has his or her predestined course to follow and hopefully see ourselves as we really are and give thanks for the opportunity of making this journey through life.

Mary Wright, Cornwall.(Ferryhill 1928 - 1949)

Dear Editor,

What a news week! Plutonium Waste, Royal Bones and Ferryhill Town Council makes the national press!

It was with great admiration that I read of the Cumbria Council refusal to have nuclear waste dumped on their doorstep. Well done to you all, I thought, but then an icy hand gripped my heart.

I realised I live in Durham. A county riddled with redundant mines, a county where it is easier to build a cardboard factory producing Anthrax spores under licence from Syria than it is to extend your potting shed. A county where babies are born and graduate from college before roundabouts are built. Where we use German wheelie bins because they are more expensive!

We all suffer from the Chilton factory, which covers our cars and lungs in a fine dust. By the way, the council says this does not happen. Another story in 20 years I think!

Surely not even this lot would dare to propose this, but then again would anyone out there be surprised if they did??

Finally, Ferryhill Town Council makes the national press. Not even Jamie and his salary managed that. How much would you give to be present at that symbolic bashing of heads together? A word of advice for the County Council though. Go to a meeting and experience democracy Ferryhill style, but submit your one allowed question beforehand to the leader. Then don’t be surprised if he moves progress after you have asked your question, this is always unanimously supported by the independently thinking labour group. If you object, expect to meet the men in tall hats before you leave the Town Hall.

Joe Makepeace, Ramsay Drive, Ferryhill.

Dear Editor,

I wonder if the good people of Ferryhill can account for the pro-liferation of dog dirt that smears and splatters the streets in such abundance these days?

I realise the minority of irresponsible dog owners is outweighed by the responsible ones but why should we suffer the disgusting faeces all around the town? Shouldn't common decency prevent such an act? Or an obligation to neighbours, family and friends? If not that then the potential for disease should inhibit offenders. If children come into contact with such muck they can become blind and all because of ignorant, lazy dog owners.

I suggest its time we all became more vigilant and stopped such behaviour with signage and fines. Do not the council members care that the town is turning into such a mess? Why aren't they walking the infested streets?

If dog owners are not prepared to clean up after their animals then they should not be allowed to keep them. There is no excuse for such filthy people.

I also have a query regarding Dumcombe Cemetery: Whilst walking a while ago in the Carrs below the cemetery, I was alarmed to find many, many broken headstones as if the end corner of the cemetery had slid down the hill, yet the fence around the cemetery seems to have been built afterwards. If this is deliberate then there must be a public inquiry and, if not, then the oversight is shocking. Any infor-mation would we welcomed.

A concerned resident.Name & address supplied.

Dear Editor,

I would like to respond to the letters from Councillors Martin and Lamb which appeared in Issue 610 of the Chapter.

Councillor Martin is quite right in stating that the proposals for £140,000 of cost reductions that colleagues and I presented to Ferryhill Town Council would involve the loss of one service, the e. cafe, and job losses. Is this not the approach being applied by Labour Councillors at County Hall? Councillor Lamb is also correct when he states that all Councils are different. There are, of course, some Town Councils that are very much more cost effective than others. To emphasise this point I will also take the example of Fleet Town Council and it's precept of £563,414 which is, as Councillor Lamb stated 15 percent less than the precept at Ferryhill which is approximately £660,000. The minutes of the meeting of Fleet Town Council, referred to by Councillor Lamb, also state that the Town Council of Fleet is respon-sible for the maintenance of 2 Community Centres, 5 parks and their associated playgrounds, Fleet Cemetery and various footpaths and other public areas in Feet. Fleet, it is stated, has a population of 36,000. This means that financing Fleet Town Council is costing each resident of Fleet £563,414 divided by 36,000 which equals £15.65p per person. Taking the same approach, the 11,300 residents of Ferryhill finance Ferryhill Town Council by £660,000 divided by 11,300, which equals £58.40 per person. Their is no justification for this enormous difference, hence the proposed cuts that colleagues and myself presented. As stated in my previous letter, it is the people of Ferryhill who, in May, will have the final say. Yours sincerely,

F.A.I.R. Independent Councillor, Brian Gibson,
