Good News

• In 2011 the Animal Science Program at the Arlington Career Center was named one of three Career and Technical Education Exemplary Program.

• Program includes internships with zoos, shelters, an equine medical center, animal hospitals, National Park Service, US Department of Agriculture and pet daycare facilities. Many graduates pursue post-secondary education in the animal-science field, including some who aspire to become veterinarians.

Question

What is the average age of a school building?

The National Center for Educational Statistics notes that 40 Years is the average age of schools in the US.

Must develop a vision for the labs that will provide opportunities for the students when the building opens

and for the future.

Review Process

• Develop a vision for an animal science program that will prepare students for multiple post-secondary pathways in the agricultural industry.

• Review state competencies for each course offered.

• Identify career opportunities in the field and look at market needs.

• Identify stackable credentials for future inclusion in the program.

• Review and identify equipment needs.

• Develop a list of animals needed to meet the state approved competencies.

could be enhanced giving students' experiences with various animals not at the Career Center.

Find a caring location for the existing animals that will be relocated.

What We Learned

Involving a variety of stakeholders in the visioning process ensures continual strengthening of the programs.

This process will be used with the other program areas.

Opportunities for Improvement

• Honor that instruction should precede construction.

• Change is always hard but necessary to strengthen a program.

• Support these recommendations moving forward.

• The additional equipment and software will be put in upcoming Perkin plans.

• Facility upgrades will be incorporated in the new building plans.
