As you start preparing your

holiday schedule and organizing

that large family feast,

remember, by following a few

simple safety tips you can enjoy

time with your loved ones and

keep you and your family safe

from fire. Kitchen Safety

Stay in the kitchen when

you are cooking on the

stovetop so you can keep an

eye on the food.

Keep children at least 3

feet away from the stove.

Keep anything that can catch fire

— oven mitts, wooden utensils,

food packaging, towels or curtains

— away from your stovetop.

Holiday Decorating

Choose decorations that are

flame resistant or flame

retardant.

Keep lit candles away

from decorations and

other things that can

burn, such as draperies

and greenery.

Blow out lit candles

when you leave the

room or go to bed.

Use lights that have the label of

an independent testing

laboratory. Some lights are only

for indoor or outdoor use, but not

both.

Replace any string of lights that

have worn or broken cords or

loose bulb connections. Connect no

more than three strands of mini-

light sets and

a maximum of

50 bulbs for

screw-in

bulbs.

Use clips

(not nails) to

suspend lights, so that their

cords do not get accidentally

poked when hanging them.

Keep decorations that have lights

or flames away from windows and

doors.

Holiday Entertaining

Test your smoke alarms.

Ask smokers to smoke outside.

Remind smokers to keep their

smoking materials with them so

young children do not touch them.

Provide large, deep ashtrays for

smokers. Wet cigarette butts with

water before discarding. *Safety Tip source: NFPA

On Sat. July 22, RIVERSIDE FIRE CERT ADVANCED TRAINING – “WATER

SAFETY AWARENESS” Training & Exercise – CERT Instructors: Firefighter Wayne

Hess & ESC -K-9 Search Specialist Peter Sellas both members of the US&R CATF6

(California Urban Search & Rescue Task Force) provided training on how to avoid conditions or

situations that could create the potential for danger (e.g., swimming in Nonpublic, restricted or

isolated areas or attempting to drive through flooded areas with strong, unstable or turbulent

currents. We practiced basic

lifesaving skills and techniques

that could help in an emergency,

we tossed a “throw bag or rope” to

see how hard we would have to

toss it to someone who may be

trapped and unable to escape

from the water. Good Training

from Professionals!

On Wed. AUG. 16, RIVERSIDE FIRE CERT ADVANCED TRAINING

“UTILITY SAFETY AWARENESS”

Instructors: City of Riverside Public Utilities Safety Team Members; Marc Smith

Sam Davis, John Baker, Marsha Williams presented information regarding the City’s

Public Utilities that included -Where Our Energy Comes From and the Water System:

Sources and Supply. We learned what CERT Members could do to help should an

emergency/ disaster happen involving Water or Electricity Utilities and that one thing

CERT Members could help with would be to secure an area with a “downed power line” with

a distance of at least 30 feet away and keeping

others away. We also learned that the city has

lots of resources to help the community to

prevent emergencies from becoming disasters by

taking preventative measures. Thanks to our

Instructors valuable life saving information to

have.
