“When you sing, musical vibrations move through you, altering your physical and emotional landscape. Group singing, for those who have

done it, is the most exhilarating and transformative of all. It takes some-thing incredibly intimate, a sound that begins inside you, shares it with a roomful of people and it comes back as something even more thrill-

ing: harmony.”

By Stacy Horn

From TIME Magazine article: Singing Changes Your Brain

Group singing has been scientifically proven to lower stress, relieve anxiety, and elevate endorphins

RIVER SIDE HIGH SCHOOL CHORAL MUSIC COURSE OFFERINGS

Please Note: Students should sign up for the course or courses they are interested in being enrolled

in for the coming year. Audition/Assessment Placements take place in the early spring and the teach-

er will assign students to particular course levels accordingly. Large enrollment numbers may produce

more than one choir section in a particular style or format.

Treble Choir (Women’s Chorus) – Intermediate = Open Enrollment, Advanced = Teacher

Assessment and Placement required.

This course is designed and implemented with the best development of the female singing voice in

mind. Students will have the opportunity to sing in two, three, and four part harmony and in a varie-

ty of musical styles, genres, and settings, including secular and sacred music. Music literacy, per-

formance skills, and sight-reading are important components of this class. Participation in addition-

al rehearsals, concerts, district assessments, and competitions will be required as a part of this co-

curricular program. This group may occasionally partner with the Men’s Choir creating a large

mixed ensemble.

Men’s Choir - Open Enrollment – No Audition Assessment required.

This course is designed and implemented with the best development of the male singing voice in

This group may occasionally partner with the Women’s Chorus creating a large

mixed ensemble.*

Advanced Vocal Ensemble – Advanced (ONLY) = Teacher Assessment and Placement re-

quired.

This will be a small SATB mixed vocal ensemble with unique opportunities for highly motivated and

dedicated singers who have the ability to perform at a high level of proficiency. Students in this

setting receive specialized coaching/training in vocal techniques and performance music. A wide

range of styles, genres, and musical settings will be considered in the development of this ensem-

ble, including secular and sacred music. Music literacy, performance skills, and sight-reading are

important components of this class. Participation in additional rehearsals, concerts, district assess-

ments, and competitions will be required as a part of this co-curricular program. This group will

likely be called upon to participate in a variety of performances over and above the choral music

department’s calendar of events. *

Show Choir – Intermediate = Open Enrollment, Advanced = Teacher Assessment and Place-

ment required.- There will be a Vocal and a Dance element in placement auditions.

This is a performance ensemble that combines the skill sets of choral singers, dancers, and theatre

acting into a high profile visual and musical stage presentation. While incorporating many of the

elements of a Broadway musical this ensemble will perform a wide range of popular current and

contemporary music styles. Music literacy, performance skills, and sight-reading are also im-

portant components of this class. This group will prepare like all choir classes and is expected to

participate in all departmental performances as well as additional district and competitive events.

Show Choir will also meet in the choral room before school once a week for required choreography

sessions at 7:30 AM. Participation in additional rehearsals, concerts, district assessments, and

competitions will be required as a part of this co-curricular program. This group will likely be called

upon to participate in a variety of performances over and above the choral music department’s

calendar of events.
