VThe Derbyshire Schools' Sports Association (DSSA) is one of the longest-standing schools' sports associations in the country. For over 70 years, DSSA has provided a driving force for competitive school sport in Derbyshire. Recent years have seen a large shift in the school sport infrastructure and as competition within and between schools becomes a greater priority for national Government, so the need to provide the right infrastructure within Derbyshire has assumed ever greater importance.

The Derbyshire School Games is one of the flagship legacy programmes linked to the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games and sits at the core of the Government's investment in school sport. The programme is set across four levels and is backed by National Lottery funding from Sport England with support from a range of partners including the Department for Education, Department of Health, Department for Culture, Media and Sport, the Youth Sport Trust and the British Paralympic Association.

DSSA Athletics Successes:
The county cross country championships were held at Tupton Hall School in January and over 300 athletes competed over an excellent and challenging course with individual medals and team prizes all fiercely fought for. At the English Schools Cross Country Championships: Lily Winfield was selected for the England Under 15 team and Hugo Milner for the England Under 17 team.
Similarly the county athletics championships at Moorways saw tight competitions between areas and individuals as over 475 athletes competed for medals on track and field. At the English Schools Athletics Championships, Derbyshire won three gold, one silver and two bronze medals despite two internationalists missing the championships as they were selected for the European Youth Championships in Georgia.
Tilly Simpson was selected for England Under 17 team in the 800m hurdles. Alicia Barrett was selected for the World Junior Championships, reaching the final and just missing the GB junior record.
Over 70 athletes enjoyed the combined event championships over five age groups and selection for the county squads was very close. Todd Webster qualified for the English Schools finals in Exeter in September 2016.
A highly successful cross country training weekend for young runners in year 7-11 was held again at Lea Green in December with over 40 athletes enjoying expert coaching.

The School Games Mark is a Government led awards scheme launched in 2012 to reward schools for their commitment to the development of competition across their school.
OfSTED can use the Mark award as part of their inspection framework and schools should be really proud of achieving any level of the award. In 2014/15, SSPs supported a total of 227 Schools to achieve a School Games Mark.
The Mark is a retrospective award which validates success over the past academic year. The awards for 2015/16 will be awarded in the autumn term.

The School Sport Partnerships (SSPs) in Derbyshire oversee levels one and two of the competition programme, in conjunction with area and sport sections. Over 80% of KS2-4 pupils have engaged in the competition programme at an intra and inter level, which equates to approximately 85,000 students.
Over 4000 young leaders have enabled the delivery of School Games competitions across all levels.

This year's prestigious Derbyshire School Games Event took place on 5th July at Mount St Mary's College in Spinkhill, North Derbyshire. It saw around 800 school children from Derbyshire's nine school sport partnerships compete in 12 events across eight different sports - cycling, cricket, tennis, QuadKids athletics, golf, rounders, Boccia and football.
Another 200 young leaders volunteered as event officials, marshals and media leaders to ensure the smooth running of the event, which is the culmination of competition across the school year.
The event began with an Opening Ceremony which included a speech from Olympic Silver Medallist and Team Derby badminton player Gail Emms, and a Q&A session with Sporting Champion Sophie Bradley-Auckland, who was part of the Great Britain Football team at the 2012 London Olympics. The Opening Ceremony also included a flag procession and a speech by young ambassadors. Competitors were also entertained with opening performances by the Gamesley Primary School choir, which won the Derbyshire School Games Choir competition, and by a dance performance and a Parkour demonstration by pupils from Anthony Gell School.
Lewis Adams, Sport Development Officer at Derbyshire Sport, said: “The Derbyshire School Games Event is a real celebration of sport and it was fantastic to see so much enthusiasm from all the young people who took part. My congratulations go to each of them, and my thanks also go to all those involved in organising and running the event - including all of the young leaders - as without their support the event could not take place.”
The event was supported by Mount St Mary's College, which provided the use of its first-class facilities for the event. Mount St Mary's College Cross Campus Director of Sport, Ben Micó, said: “We are delighted to have been able to host Derbyshire's flagship school sports event for a second time. It was fantastic to see so many talented young sports people competing at the same time and I congratulate them all on their achievements.”

The Derbyshire School Games Championship has run throughout the 2015/16 school year and teams have received points for their final position in the Level 3 County Final for the 50 priority School Games competitions. 10 points were gained for 1st, 9 points for 2nd, 8 points for 3rd and so on through to 1 point for 10th.
The Championship tables outline the cumulative points gained for each school and the subsequent position in the Primary, Secondary and Competition Plus School Games Championships. With nearly 350 primary schools and 60 secondary schools engaging in the Derbyshire School Games programme, it is a great achievement to qualify for any county final. So, congratulations to all teams who have scored points.
