Lessons from Antietam - Leadership Growth How good are your leaders today? Will they be better tomorrow? Who will replace them when they are gone? Every organization asks itself these questions, but finding the answers is difficult. The challenges you face today are different from those you faced in the past. The ones you will face in the future will be different from those of today. Your current leaders must grow to meet those challenges, and new leaders must grow to fill the shoes of those leaders who depart. Change will happen. Growth might not. “Growth or Stagnation - A Leadership Choice” is a development program to help you insure that growth. This program draws upon the dramatic stories of history to teach the people of today some hard-won lessons. The venue for this program is one of the most hallowed places in America – Antietam Battlefield. At this place, in September of 1862, over a hundred thousand Americans engaged in a bloody struggle to determine the fate of our nation. At the end of the day, over 23,000 had fallen in the most terrible single day our country has ever experienced. This program is a comparison of two people who played critical roles in that struggle. Their names are Abraham Lincoln and George McClellan. In July of 1862, the two of them held leadership positions of great importance. One was President of the United States. The other was General-In-Chief of the massive armies of the Union. Today, one is remembered as one of the great Americans of all time, while the other is relatively unknown except to those who study the American Civil War. Why did one rise to greatness and the other fade into relative obscurity? This program examines why one of them grew, and the other did not. “Growth or Stagnation - A Leadership Choice” is available as a one-session or two- session program. Both programs include a full day on or near the Antietam National Battlefield near Sharpsburg, MD. The two-session program adds a half-day, conference room program, conducted at a facility of your choice prior to the visit to the battlefield. This half-day session utilizes group discussion exercises, case studies, and advance material that enable attendees to take full advantage of this learning opportunity (see “Program Description”) The program is led by John Baniszewski, who has 33 years of business management experience with NASA, and who is a Licensed Battlefield Guide certified by the National Park Service. Since 2001, Mr. Baniszewski has been conducting a program “Lessons of Leadership from the Battle of Gettysburg,” in which he has shared the leadership lessons from the greatest Civil War battle with over two thousand people from more than 20 government and private organizations. “Growth or Stagnation - A Leadership Choice” offers a different perspective on leadership, using the venue of Antietam. Program Options to Match Your Needs

"Tell me and I may forget. Show me and I may remember. Involve me and I will understand." - Chinese proverb

These deeply moving experiences center around a visit to the Antietam National Battlefield near Sharpsburg, MD, where participants hear the stories of leadership upon the very same hallowed ground upon which they occurred. There are two options available: • The One-Session Program, which is a full day, near or on the Antietam National Battlefield.

This program is divided into three segments. o Segment 1 is a lecture and discussion activity which starts with a description of the

program format and learning objectives. It introduces participants to Abraham Lincoln and George McClellan, providing information about their personal lives, the times they lived in, and how they came into leadership positions. It then focuses on their roles and interactions during the Civil war, up to the Battle of Antietam.

o Segment 2 is done on the Antietam Battlefield, in which the instructor takes participants on a guided tour that explains the events of the battle. Participants stand upon the very ground over which thousands of Americans marched and fought, see the battlefield through the eyes of those men, and participate in activities that enable them to understand the horrors these men experienced. Throughout the tour, there is emphasis on how the conduct of the battle was influenced by the abilities of the leaders who contended there.

o Segment 3 is a lecture, discussion, and group participation activity which analyzes the two leaders, Lincoln and McClellan, to assess why one of them grew to greatness and the other did not. It then summarizes the lessons learned during the day.

o Segments 1 and 3 can be done at the Antietam National Battlefield itself. Park buildings are available in the event of inclement weather. There are also nearby conference facilities in Shepherdstown, West Virginia, which can also be utilized for segments 1 and 3.

o The sequence for the one-session program starts with Segment 1 in the morning, followed by an early lunch. Segment 2 is done in the early afternoon, followed by Segment 3 in the mid-afternoon. Total duration is 6-7 hours, including lunch.

• The Two-Session Program includes the same contents of the One-Session Program, plus a half-day session at a conference facility of your choice. The half-day session begins with an Introduction Segment which includes case study exercises, group discussion, and introductory material to help attendees achieve a deeper understanding of the learning objectives. That segment is followed by Segment 1, as described above. It is conducted at a facility of your choice.

o The Introduction Segment and Segment 1 require app. 3 hours. They can be done in the morning or afternoon, at your preference.

o Segment 2 (the battlefield tour) is done in the morning at the Antietam National Battlefield. It is followed by a mid-day lunch, which is then followed by Segment 3. Total duration is 5-6 hours, including lunch

Pictures From Past Programs

Mr. Baniszewski makes use of many hands-on activities, props, and visual aids to help attendees understand what it was like to be a soldier on the battlefield. Here he trains a group of attendees in the technology used by the soldiers, and how to work together as a Civil war combat team.

A group of federal government employees gathers near the Antietam National Battlefield Visitor Center, to learn how the leaders of the armies used the rolling terrain to their advantage during the battle.

Mr. Baniszewski talks to a group at the Cornfield, site of the most ferocious fighting during the battle, where 10,000 Americans fell during three hours of fighting. Here he narrates how the failure of coordination within the Union Army senior leadership team led to a disaster during the battle.

Mr. Baniszewski has a commercial-use authorization from the National Park Service that allows him to conduct the program in historical structures on the battlefield. Here he talks to a group from the US Census, inside the famous Dunker Church.
