Introduction

An auction of original Flip Flop Art to raise funds for St Christopher’s Hospice.

St Christopher’s Hospice in Sydenham, south London is a world leader in care for the dying and those close to them. It is the birthplace of the modern hospice movement, founded by Dame Cicely Saunders in 1967. They provide free specialist care services to terminally ill people offering specialist nursing as they approach the end of their lives.

St Christopher’s is also the largest provider of specialist palliative care education in the world.

St Christopher’s is a registered charity and need to constantly raise funds. Less than a third of their funding comes directly from the National Health Service. They rely on donations to continue caring for dying people and those close to them. The balance must be raised from grants, legacies, their charity shops and the generosity of supporters, people like you.  They rely on donations to continue caring for dying people and those close to them.  Please help us to raise urgently needed funds by making a donation or by bidding for artwork in the Flip Flop Art auction.

Why Flip Flop Art?

The humble flip flop! We all own a pair - he most ubiquitous footwear in the world. At any one time over 300,000,000 people are wearing a pair. The sun is shining and out come the flip flops. Your toes feel the shock of freedom after months being cooped up inside boots and shoes. They look great with any outfit! And it’s a great excuse ladies and gents for a pedicure!

We invited artists, designers, friends and neighbours to create artwork either inspired by or incorporating Flip Flops - anything from decorating a pair of flip flops to producing a painting, collage or sculpture. Over 50 people have contributed artwork – amongst these are world-renowned designers and celebrated artists.

Who we are:

We are both enthusiastic supporters of St Christopher’s Hospice.

Andrew Stuck is a travel behaviour change consultant. Last year, he was one of four artists from the UK who participated in an international walking and art residency at the Banff Centre in Canada. Flip Flop Art was one project he conceived while on the residency.

Melanie Sutton is a homeopath, Aromatherapist and Flower essence practitioner.

A list of supporters who have helped us bring this to exhibition and auction to fruition is provided at the back of the catalogue.

Tip Top Flip Flop

You can tell we purchase Ecover products as each of the tops that go towards underpinning this pair of flip flops, comes from three of their products: laundry wash (blue), floor soap (orange), conditioner (pink). These tops are part of a collection of plastic tops – in 2005, I saved every plastic top from whatever product we used at home. What a lot of plastic.

Made to measure

As for inspiration, I was thinking about the 'essence' of flip flops, and what makes them so functional.

I heard that havaianas were originally used by surfers in Brazil because when they left their shoes on the beaches they were stolen. Havaianas were so cheap that it didn't matter, and they were less attractive to thieves because of their low value.Cheap production was one of the things I was focusing on, using cheap materials and as few production stages as possible. As I was making the flip flop by hand, it also does not require any machinery so there is an element of traditional production, but juxtaposed with modern looking materials.

I was also trying to aim for comfort and adjustable sizing which I think flip flops also offer to an extent, hence the use of elastic. In addition to this it is really slip so it can be easily packaged.

Unfortunately, the flip flops are more of a prototype than a wearable pair, so if anyone were to want to buy them to wear I would make them a pair in their size which would be more durable, now I have worked out the construction.

About the artist

Sometimes playful but at the same time deadly serious, my work aims both to fascinate and to provoke, whilst, above all, questioning our contemporary addiction to consumerism and its consequences. I hope through my art to encourage people to think and act differently: by focusing on issues in an unusual and engaging way and via projects that are seriously researched but ‘off the wall’ in their execution, often with a humourous, playful tone and always accessible and with a strong aesthetic.

Typically my materials are the discarded and the unvalued (rubbish, earth and air) and I make something of them with the minimal of intervention. I enjoy the irony of transforming the debris of society into something that is valued but which at the same time provokes, having an impact indirectly on a much wider audience.

Whilst my work is non-commercial, it paradoxically comments on consumerism by utilization of consumerism’s tools: merchandising the un-sellable and hence raising questions about the power of marketing (and also art) to make anything seem desirable.

Poem – Summer Shore

White wave crests on a golden shore

The tang and sweep of the sea

As gentle little summer winds

Keep sideling up to me.

Flat grey stones awash with rainbow rivulets

Shy sea creatures scurry in a frantic minuet

Gracefully curled seashells adorn themselves so cool

Their Mother of Pearl beauty ‘neath shimmering sun-kissed pools.

Beside this living beauty

Trail footprints in the sand

Created there by humans of every different clan

Their feet embraced by sandals of smart and modern hue.

Flat soles with thongs toe-gripping

Flip flops now, born anew

Flip flop, flip flop along they trot

So popular to wear

The so familiar sound is heard

On the road to everywhere

Flip flop, flip flop, flip flop, hooray.

NOT FOR SALE – however, do please make a donation!!

About the poet

An octogenarian poet whose poems evoke fresh flowers, sandy beaches and rolling countryside.

'Brazilian Christmas' - seeks to highlight the unsustainability of our Northern lifestyles by creating a deliberate jarring and juxtaposition with Southern realities. Our Northern notion of Christmas, full of snow and reindeers is at odds with the sun and sand conveyed by flip flops. By the same notion our Northern lifestyles, and our economic growth is at odds with the origins of cheap Southern imports, most notably from China and India.

The pound shop where the flip flops were purchased encapsulates the issue. Until recently we in the West have benefited enormously from lower costs of living whilst having little thought for how this is being subsidised through human and environmental exploitation in developing countries. The fragile nature of the flip flops, produced from oil based synthetic rubber seeks to remind us of the tenuous nature of our financial systems. Do we need a new approach that sees the world as a system that needs supporting and nurturing at all levels?

About Henry & Joe Quackenbush

This father/son team — persuaded finally that there won’t be “just one more beach day” for our flip flops to earn their proper keep — was inspired by their New England autumn yard awash in maple, oak, and birch tree leaves, squirrel-less acorns, and a wild turkey feather or two.

The Marie Antoinette One doesn't naturally think of flip flops and decadence, which is why husband Fred and I wondered what a pair of flip flops for Marie Antoinette might look like.  Although her extravagances have been blown out of proportion she certainly liked her bling, so we created a contemporary version for her.  However, you will notice that they are tied together with a golden ribbon, which means that however glamorous her footwear may be, she's really a prisoner of them - to wear but not to walk.

I'm a great supporter of my local Hospice in Bury St Edmunds (St Nicholas Hospice) and when the idea of creating something for St Christopher was mooted, I jumped at the chance to do something for another very worthy organisation.

The Flip Flock “Now the Flip Flock is perfect for those early or late summer days when you want your feet to be free enough to put away the winter brogues and get the sandals on....but it's just too darn cold to go sockless.  So I have created the Flip Flock - flip flops with built-in socks so your lovely tootsies may never go cold. I'm a great supporter of my local Hospice in Bury St Edmunds (St Nicholas Hospice) and when the idea of creating something for St Christopher was mooted, I jumped at the chance to do something for another very worthy organisation.”

Roman Walking…. in Your Toga and Flip Flops

Romans tread on mosaic tiles for thousands of years, so I thought it interesting to allow one to tread on those same tiles -- no matter where you are, or where you are walking to or from. Roman Walking flip flops, a must have accessory to the common toga, combines extra wear protection with the cooling touch of tiles on your toes.

Flop Flips

I have known Andrew for quite a few years, and Mel for slightly less. Andrew always has whacky ideas especially for fund raising: lines of coins down the pavement of our street (residents enticed to join in through mulled wine and edible goodies); racing model sports cars on tracks in his house; unwanted Christmas present parties; to name just a few.

I dedicate by flip flop flop flips to Andrew & Mel for their fund raising activities on behalf of St Christopher’s Hospice, which is a clause close to my heart.

The Price of Beauty – the rose flip flops represent the hidden pain in much that is considered beautiful or important.

“The rose is a legend in it’s own. The story goes that during the Roam Empire, there was in incredibly beautiful maiden named Rhodanthe. Her beauty drew many zealous suitors who pursued her relentlessly. Exhausted by their pursuit. Rhodanthe was forced to take refuge from her suitors in the temple of her friend Diana. Unfortunately, Diana became jealous. And when the suitors broke down her temple gates to get near their beloved Rhodanthe, she also became angry turning Rhodanthe in to a rose and her suitors into thorns.”

Fruity Flip Flop

I was inspired to do a fruity flip-flop because I love fruit and flip-flops basically! Well…I wanted something different and a bit extraordinary, Mum and Dad said the idea was a bit crazy but I stuck with my first Idea because it was the best I could think of. I drew round my own size 8 flip-flop on an A4 piece of paper and used the banana skin as the strap. From then on I added more fruit. Then I coloured it in, fine lined it and signed it.

Foreshore

"My artistic practice has been profoundly influenced by exposure to two vastly different environments.  Firstly, growing up with minimal art and modern architecture, which gave me the visual language of reduced and economical form. Secondly, witnessing the raw power of the coastline. This presented chaos giving me an awareness of natural laws and an interest in physical matter. Through my work I seek to reach a combination of these ingredients, aiming for a point of tension and harmony where a frisson occurs."

Flip and Flop – rubber shower feet mounted on a wooden panel.

Feet have always been an important part of my family’s life so you can imagine the despair at home when we first went metric. Subsequently, a lot of my art has involved me in measuring up to all things to do with the sea that live or float horizontally.

“Flip and Flop” or “Fliff and Floffen” were found in a shower tray at the old Billingsgate Fish Market and spoke what I thought was a German accent. However, these two fishy rubber vagrants could be yours for ‘a couple of squid’.

A Right Pair

Feet have always been an important part of my family’s life so you can imagine the despair at home when we first went metric. Subsequently, a lot of my art has involved me in measuring up to all things to do with the sea that live or float horizontally.

I learnt to read by look at a wonderfully illustrated book on Robinson Crusoe and Man Friday. My father told me he thought they were a right pair. So when I was in Spain I bought a pair of beach flip flops, destroyed them and remade them in wood. Painted and mounted them as a new pair which are a “Right Pair” in more ways than one.

Because I love cashmere

These flip flops were inspired by my love of cashmere – there is no better feeling that nth softness and luxury against skin. Our feet are one of the more sensitive parts and the fell of cashmere on feet gets me excited!

Croc thongs

The croc thongs comprise a pair of Brazilian designer flip flops to which a rubber crocodile has been lashed to each foot.

They were inspired by holiday planning for a trip to Australia and an article on crocodiles in the wild and their commercial farming. The croc thongs are conceived as a variant on crocodile skin shoes - stylish antipodean footwear for dangerous waters with a reptilian theme.

“I work in stone so it made perfect sense to me to create a pair of stone flip flops. The knot is a mini ‘monkey’s fist’, something with which sailors might be familiar.

Not great for padding to the loo in at 3 in the morning but, if suitably looked after, the soles should last for another few hundred million years.”

Untitled – inspired by the hope of a better summer next year…

This piece is made up of two separate pen and coloured pencil drawings each produced on A5 sized pieces of white printer paper. I was inspired to create some sketches by anthropomorphising my flip-flops as little characters relaxing on their dream holiday without the weight of their real human owners wearing them out as they wander about with them on their feet!! With the present emphasis on each individual’s attempt to reduce their carbon footprint by limiting foreign travel, I envisaged our friendly flip-flops searching for a traditional relaxing holiday closer to home—perhaps on the beach in Devon or on the North Yorkshire coast where, as a child, I spent some magical days looking in rock pools with my Yorkshire grandparents. The first picture shows the flip-flops in the “pink” enjoying the bliss of their dream holiday—sun, sand and peace whereas the second sadly reflects the reality of the last two summers in England –rain and more rain as our little flip-flops, blue with cold, in wellies, beachtowel and newspaper hats shelter in the doorway of the aptly named “Happy Splash” pub.

About the artsit

I have doodled/drawn cartoons and little sketches from a young age usually on the backs of envelopes or scrap paper as large sheets of pristine paper can be somewhat daunting -- a bit of a drawback for me as I now design gardens for a living and am regularly confronted with immaculate sheets of trace and cartridge paper as large as A0. It is always a relief when the first mark is made!!

A Turquoise Sea

I painted these flip flops in my favourite colours which all remind

me of the beautiful turquoise seas which you sometimes get on holiday

( depending where you go! ).

Swimming in them makes me feel alive and totally at peace.

I did them for St Christopher's because I know of the fantastic work

that all the staff put in there to make it a calm, peaceful and

surprisingly happy place for all the patients and their families.

Artists’ book

During August 2008 we drew flip-flops and their wearers as we travelled around Toronto. Whilst sitting on the ferry to the island, whilst lounging on the beach, whilst eating at cafés on Queen St. West we took in turns to draw flip-flops from life, using pen and watercolour paint. This is the only copy of this book to be produced - hand-bound on watercolour paper - and is the first piece of work that we have made together.

Bittersweet memories

A lovely pair of leather flip flops, which have been lovingly nailed to a piece of weathered wood, retrieved from a broken pallet on our allotment. Flip-Flop

This piece was inspired by flip-flops. It is playing with the ambiguity of the term flip-flop. One meaning refers to the sandals, the other to a common electronic circuit.

“In digital circuits, a flip-flop is a term referring to an electronic circuit (a bistable multivibrator) that has two stable states and thereby is capable of serving as one bit of memory…The name flip-flop was later derived from the sound produced on a speaker connected to one of the back coupled amplifiers outputs during the trigger process within the circuit,,,” [wikipedia.org]

We are surrounded by flip-flops. You can almost certainly find at least a pair in every household. But the number of electronic flip-flops will exceed the number of sandal flip-flops by far. They are the basic building block of computer memory and can be found in logic-circuits of many electronic appliances.

Who can see flip-flops ad not to be touched by their sheer beauty?

Flip Flop Butterflies

Just playing around with the flip flops I bought in the summer, the shapes made me think of a butterfly. I thought it would be fun to try to make the idea work in an image using photographs of real flip flops in a collage. I like the idea that the flip flops are liberated from the ground and a lifetime of bondage to other people’s feet.
