Aim of the this Booklet
First and foremost the aim of this booklet is to provide information to students and parents. It provides a summary of the design process, along
with guidelines concerning the coursework project and folio. The booklet will enable parents and also students to check and monitor the progress
of the project.
Introduction
As you are well aware, your ward is doing Design and Technology at H.S.C level. The subject is vast and maybe something new to you. DT is a
subject which cater for the intellectual, emotional, creativity and skills development of your child. Moreover, it enables your child to understand
his/her technological environment and also the impact of technology on society. This will make them more responsible consumers and citizens.
The Syllabus
The subject consist of a core syllabus and specialized areas. The core syllabus is mandatory and will be done in lower 6, whereas the specialized
areas will be completed in upper 6. Your child will need to choose one of the specialized areas, these are:
Graphic Product Product Design Practical Technology
Assessment and Examination
The design and Tech examination basically consist of the following:
1. Component 1It is a question paper of 3hrs which aim at testing the core knowledge/syllabus. The core syllabus will be covered in lower 6. The weightage of
this paper is 30% of the Design and Tech examination.
2. Component 2

This component is a coursework project. It requires candidates to identify problem and then produce a design model which validates the initial
design thinking and synthesis of ideas. The component 2 will consist of a folio and a model which needs to be submitted for correction in lower
6. The weightage of this component is 20%.
3. Component 3It is a question paper which aim at testing one of the focus areas (graphic, product or practical). Students are required to answer 2 questions fromone of the focus areas and one question in section B, which is a Design Question. The weightage of this component is 30%.
4. Component 4It is the second part of the school based coursework project. Your child is required to submit the second part of the folio & artifact for correction
by the start of the third term in upper 6. The weightage of this component is 20%.
Design and Technology-The Coursework
The coursework consist of component 2 and 4.
Component 2Folio and Model
The folio will consist of the following design stages:
1. Identification of a need or opportunity leading to a Design Brief. (3 marks)2. Analysis of and research into the design brief which results in a specification. (7marks)3. Generation and appraisal of design ideas. (16 marks)4. Modeling of ideas. (14 marks)
Component 4Folio and Artefact
The folio will consist of the following design stages:

Responsibility of Parents
This booklet has been design to provide you with information on the subject and the coursework project. The project work will span over a
period of nearly 19 months. Your child has been given ample time to work and complete the project. The teacher will monitor the coursework
but it is also your responsibility to do so. You will be provided with a time plan, along with the submission dates for correction/monitoring. You
are strongly advised to regularly check the progress sheet provided in the booklet and to sign. Along with the teacher, you will also be required
to regularly check and monitor your childs progress in the coursework.
Time plan
The deadline for the completion of the different design stages are as shown below. It is important that your child keep in track with the given
time plan so as not to accumulate work which may eventually lead to submission of poor quality rush job or incomplete work where in
either case your ward would be penalised. Not keeping in trend with the time plan can also seriously impedes the revision and preparation of
your ward for the HSC examination as much revision time should be then devoted to the completion of the design coursework.
