Behind the logo

“design is thinking made visual.”–Saul Bass

Over the years, growth has always been the top priority. Not just in design abilities, but in experience as well. A passion for design started in high school with a series of film classes. Since then, my love for design has flourished. It has continued to grow with every design opportunity,

but it’s in a team setting that I reach my greatest potential. I enjoy being challenged by new projects and relish in overcoming these obstacles. They fuel my creative ambition and help me maintain a strong work ethic.

“Allergies: Nothing to Sneeze At” to be featured in a health magazine. Using milk to create experimental expressive typography is the pièce de résistance.

This magazine cover is an assignment for an image manipulation course. The requirements were to create a cover for an issue of OMNI with the main article titled “The Ghost in the Machine.” Transforming the model into a cyborg was difficult, but the most advantageous aspect of the cover.

Poly-kroMa

Poly-Kroma is an annual event at Cal Poly Pomona. It’s an all inclusive multi-exhibit event for the Fine Art and Graphic Design students. A team effort was a necessity for such a large undertaking. Our individual talents combined made the creation of this website possible. My personal contributions include coding the skeleton of the desktop as well as the mobile site and implementing the designs of the group onto the pages.

Client: Cal Poly Pomona Art Department

Time: 8 weeks

Team: Michelle Comer, Corey McClelland, Megan McGowan, and Lauren Schaumann

Responsibilities: UI design, debugging and compiling code.

Products: a desktop site and a mobile site

JackaloPe design

Jackalope Design is a fictional design group that was created for a course that focused on branding and identity systems. The aspect of the design that I am most proud of is the subtlety of the horn and the ear of the jackalope forming a “JD” monogram.

Course: Graphic Design II

Time: 3 weeks

Products: logo, business card, letterhead, notepad, and packaging

Miles to go

Miles To Go is an indie rock band based in Columbia, South Carolina. The band’s sound inspires a moody, mysterious and organic feel that teeters between Radiohead and Sigur Rós. To visually represent this, I used an abstracted photo of trolley cables knocked out of a deep turquoise print on brown recycled paper.

Client: Miles To Go

Time: 2 weeks

Products: album sleeve and vinyl label

no Butts aBout it

No Butts About It is a poster series and a book about the hazards of cigarette butt litter. The posters are a mix of photography and relief prints.

To emphasize the issue, the prints are high contrast and monochromatic except for the cigarette butts. The juxtaposition of the almost sterile print with the dirty cigarette butts highlights the epidemic.

The book follows the same design aesthetic as the posters and offers more insight into the issue. From the cover to the rough spine and use of industrial staples to bind it, this book is filled with beautiful textile qualities.

Course: Graphic Design III

Objectives: Create a three poster series and a corresponding book about an environmental issue.

Time: 9 weeks

Products: three poster series and an experimental book
