P are difficile immaginare

che oltre alla Venezia

da cartolina, quella

affollatissima di Piazza San

Marco, di Rialto e del Canal

Grande, ne esista un’altra,

fuori dall’ordinario, ancorainesplorata e segreta.Eppure, solo poco distante

dal la più celebre piazza

cittadina, per chi vuole

cercare angoli di pace e

confondersi tra i veneziani ,c’è tutta una Veneziainsolita e inattesa, daesplorare a ritmo lento.Non si può dire di aver cono-

sciuto Venezia – città, unica

al mondo, che sorge su un

arcipelago di piccole isoleal centro del la sua laguna –

senza averla mai vistadall’acqua . I l modo migl iore

Sono circa una quarantina l e

isole del la laguna di Veneziae più del la metà si trova nel la

parte settentrionale.

Murano, celebre per le forna-

ci e g l i atel ier d i vetro

soffiato, Burano, i sola d i pe-

scatori da l le tipiche case co-

lorate, e Torcel lo, amata da

Hemingway, con la sua mi l le-

naria basi l ica , l a più antica

del la laguna, sono solo alcu-

ne del le isole che attendono

di essere raggiunte, esplorate

e ricordate per la loro

bel lezza. Tutte le isole chestanno intorno a Venezia ,anche le meno conosciute,

ma forse proprio per questo

più ricche di fascino, non do-vrebbero essere dimenticatein un soggiorno nel la ci ttà

lagunare.

I t is hard to imagine that

behind the Venice of the

postcards, the tourist-

packed city of Saint Mark's

Square, the Rialto and the

Grand Canal , there is anothersecret Venice, extraordinaryand unexplored . Yet, a sto-

ne's throw from the world's

most famous square a

parallel city, unexpected anduncommon , l ies waiting for

those who come to find thequieter corners and mix withreal Venetians; a city to be

explored without haste.

You cannot say you know

Venice - unique in al l the

world, on its archipelago ofsmall islands in the middleof the lagoon - if you have

never seen it from the water.The best way to explore the

lagoon, that wide open

stretch of water and semi-

immersed land soaked in si-

lence and tranquil ity, is onboard an eco-sustainableboat, with an electric motor

and photovoltaic panels, or

powered by biofuels. But you

can also choose to sai l on a

colourful bragozzo, the tra-ditional Venetian fishingboat which is sti l l one of the

best-known symbols of la-

goon culture.

There are around fortyislands in the Venetian la-goon , more than half of whi-

ch are in the northern part,

which is soon to formal ly

become a 16,000 hectare

natural park. Murano, famous

for its ki lns and glass-blo-

wing workshops; Burano, thefishermen's island with its

typical coloured houses;

Torcello, beloved by He-

mingway, with its thousand-

year-old cathedral , the oldest

in the lagoon: these are just a

few of the islands waiting to

be explored, experienced

and remembered for their

beauty. None of the smallerislands surrounding Venice,even the least-known, but

perhaps most fascinating

precisely because of this,

should be forgotten during

your stay in the city.

Certosa

Proprio al centro della lagunaveneta, l ’isola della Certosa, i l

cui nome deriva dai PadriCertosini che l’abitarono per

secoli , offre i più suggestivi

panorami di Venezia, di Mura-

no e del Lido. L’isola,

abbandonata e spogliata delle

sue opere d’arte, in tempi più

recenti è stata usata a scopi

mil itari. Oggi, dopo un lungo

progetto di recupero tuttora in

corso, è diventata un parcourbano, in parte accessibile al

pubblico, che permette facil i

escursioni naturalistiche. L’iso-

la ospita anche una marinacon più di trecento ormeggi

attrezzati, una struttura ricetti-

va con hotel, ristorante e bar,un cantiere navale e una scuo-la di vela.

Certosa

Right in the centre of the Ve-netian lagoon, the island of

Certosa, whose name comes

from the Carthusian monkswho lived here for centuries,

offers striking views of Venice,

Murano and the Lido. The

island, once abandoned and

stripped of its art, in more re-

cent times was used by the

mil itary. Today, after a long re-

habil itation project which is

stil l ongoing, it has been

turned into an urban park,parts of which are open to the

public for user-friendly nature

walks. The island also has a

harbour with over three

hundred well-equipped berths,

a hotel complex with restau-rant and bar, a boatyard and a

sailing school .


Vignole

Chiamata un tempo l'isola dellesette vigne, le Vignole, seppur

vicinissima a Venezia, è oggi un

piccolo paese con una quaranti-

na di abitanti, da sempre legati

alla terra. Dagli orti dell'isola

infatti spesso provenivano leverdure del mercato di Rialto,trasportate ogni giorno su

grandi barche a remi. Da visitare

la chiesetta cinquecentesca,intitolata a Santa Maria Assuntae Santa Eurosia, forse l'unica

del suo genere ancora ben

conservata fra le tante – ormai

scomparse – che si trovavano

nelle isole della laguna. Se già in

epoca romana era un luogo pri-vilegiato di villeggiatura, l ’isoladelle Vignole è ancora molto

amata dai veneziani, che la

scelgono per una sosta in una

delle sue caratteristiche tratto-

rie con pergolato e giardino.

Sant'Andrea

Sull’isola di Sant’Andrea, alle

porte della laguna, si trova una

rocca cinquecentesca a guardia

di Venezia, progettata da Mi-chele Sanmicheli, uno dei mas-

simi architetti dell’epoca, per

intimorire i nemici che venivano

dal mare. Attualmente il forte

non è accessibile, ma anche

dall’acqua è possibile ammirare

a pieno il corpo centrale, co-

struito sui resti dell’originario

torrione quattrocentesco, e il

bastione esterno alla base del

quale erano poste le batterie.

Qui, per un breve periodo, fu re-

cluso l’avventuriero e scrittoreveneziano Giacomo Casanova.

VignoleOnce called the island of theseven vineyards, le Vignole,

albeit very close to Venice, is a

small vil lage with around forty

inhabitants, who have always

been farmers. In fact, many ofthe vegetables sold in theRialto market are grown on the

island's plots, and brought in

daily in large rowing boats. The

sixteenth century church ofSanta Maria Assunta e SantaEurosia is worth a visit, as pe-

rhaps the only well-preserved

example of the many churches -

now disappeared - on the

islands of the lagoon. The island

of Le Vignole was already a

prestigious holiday destinationin Roman times, and continues

to be much loved by the Vene-tians, who come here to eat in

one of the typical trattorias with

gardens and pergolas.

Sant'Andrea

On the island of Sant’Andrea, at

the gateway of the lagoon,

stands a sixteenth centuryfortress which guards the city of

Venice, built by Michele Sanmi-cheli, one of the era's greatest

architects, to intimidate enemies

arriving by sea. Currently the

fortress is not open to the pu-

blic, but from the water visitors

can admire the central

stronghold, built on the ruins of

the original fifteenth centurykeep, and the external bastion

which housed the artil lery. Thewriter and adventurer GiacomoCasanova was imprisoned he-

re for a short time.

Sant’Erasmo

L’isola di Sant’Erasmo, la piùvasta della laguna nord , è

conosciuta come l ’orto dellaSerenissima , ed è rinomata

per la bontà dei suoi carciofi,cardi e asparagi .Sul l ’isola si produce anche

dell ’ottimo vino: proprio a

Sant’Erasmo ogni domenica

d'ottobre si celebra la vite e

l’uva con una delle feste più

popolari della laguna, la Festadel Mosto. A Sant’Erasmo si

può visitare, da marzo a otto-

bre, la Torre Massimiliana,fortezza ottocentesca che pre-

se il nome dell 'arciduca Massi-

mil iano d'Austria, i l quale vi

trovò rifugio durante i moti

popolari del 1848. Oggi la

torre, recentemente restaurata,

ospita esposizioni d'arte edeventi culturali .

Sant’Erasmo

The island of Sant’Erasmo, thelargest in the northern lagoon ,is known as the garden of the"Serenissima", and is famous

for its wonderful artichokes,cardoons and asparagus.The island also produces ex-

cel lent wine, and on the first

Sunday of October every year,

Sant’Erasmo celebrates the vi-

ne and its fruit with the la-

goon's most popular festival ,

the Festa del Mosto.From March to October you

can visit the Maximilian Tower,a nineteenth century fortress

named after Archduke Maxi-

mil ian of Austria, who took re-

fuge here during the popular

uprising in 1848. Recently re-

stored, the tower now holds

art exhibitions and othercultural events.


Lazzaretto NuovoL'isola del Lazzaretto Nuovo –

per distinguerlo da quel lo

vecchio – un tempo ospitava

un lazzaretto per la quarante-na di uomini e merci so-spettati di contagio della pe-ste. Da apri le a ottobre si può

visitare l 'isola con un tour gui-dato che prevede un percorso

storico–archeologico interno

al la cinta muraria e

un’escursione natural istica.

La passeggiata, di circa un chi-

lometro, consente di percorre-

re i l vecchio “giro di ronda”delle sentinelle e di sal ire sui

bastioni ottocenteschi, dove si

abbraccia con lo sguardo tuttala laguna di fronte a Venezia .

San Francesco del Deserto

L’isola di San Francesco del

Deserto, un piccolo paradisodi pace e silenzio che sorge

di fronte a Sant’Erasmo, è un

eremo francescano, abitato

dai Frati Minori fin dal 1230.

Secondo la tradizione, questo

convento, circondato da uno

splendido giardino, ospitò,

intorno al 1220, i l Santo di As-sisi di ritorno dall’Oriente.L’ isola è aperta ai visitatori in

cerca di tranqui l l i tà, che desi-

derano ristorarsi pas-

seggiando nel parco, visi-

tando la chiesa e i l chiostro.

Sarà come entrare in un altro

mondo, lontano dal la fol la di

Venezia.

Lazzaretto NuovoThe island of Lazzaretto

Nuovo - as distinct from the

old - was once home to a

quarantine centre for menand goods suspected of be-ing infected with the plague.The island can be visited from

Apri l to October, with a

guided tour which takes visit-

ors on a historical - archae-

ological route inside the peri-

meter wal ls and a nature walk.

The walk, around one ki lo-

metre, fol lows the old route ofthe guards, and cl imbs the

nineteenth century bastions,

giving great views of thewhole panorama of the la-goon .

San Francesco del Deserto

The island of San Francesco

del Deserto, a smal l paradiseof peace and quiet across the

water from Sant’Erasmo, is a

Franciscan hermitage, inhab-ited by Minorite monks since

1230. Legends tel ls that this

monastery, with its splendid

gardens, hosted St. Francis ofAssisi on his return from theHoly Land in 1220.

The island is open to visi tors

in search of tranqui l i ty, who

wish to rest in the gardens,

the church and the cloisters.

I t is l ike entering another

world , far away from the

crowds of Venice.

Da sempre e dovunque

considerata “regina

dei fiori”, la rosa èindiscussa sovrana anche deigiardini veneziani. Fioriture da

scoprire durante la bella sta-

gione in spazi segreti, dietropalazzi e conventi, fra canali emura di cinta. Terreni strappatial salmastro, dove un tempo si

coltivavano anche prodotti

util i per la tavola e la salute,

dove i fiori si mescolavano ad

ortaggi, erbe aromatiche e

officinali, ad agrumi in vaso e a

frutti del brolo.

Roseti curvati ad arco copriva-

no lunghe pergole, desiderose

di sole. Oppure in epoca più

recente creavano ombrosi

berceau “a forma di capanna”,

come ci racconta D'Annunzio.A volte ne nasceva un vero

“paradiso dei fiori” come nel

giardino Eden alla Giudeccadove “vecchie rose selvatiche

s’intrecciavano ancora con ro-

se 'centifolia' e 'muscosa', tra

iris e gigli bianchi”.

150 specie e innumerevoli varie-

tà, per rispondere alle esigenze

di diversi spazi verdi oltre che

alle più intime attese di ogni

giardiniere.

Chi avrà il privilegio di accedere

a giardini privati, potrà scoprire

la languida bellezza di antichevarietà o il portamento orgo-

gliosamente eretto di quelle

moderne, talvolta raccolte in ve-re e proprie collezioni, piccolesfide botaniche in cui i proprie-

tari amano cimentarsi per gode-

re di fioriture che stupiscano gli

ospiti e rispecchino il proprio

I n all locations and since ti-

me immemorial considered

"the queen of flowers",the rose is the undisputed so-vereign of the Venetiangardens. Blooms to discover

during the summer in hiddenspaces, behind palaces andcloisters, between the canalsand walls.Land reclaimed from the salt

water, which once also culti-

vated products both for the

table and for our well-being,

where the flowers mix with

vegetables, aromatic and me-

dicinal herbs, potted citrus

and fruits of the orchard.

Arches of roses cover long

pergolas, eager for the sun. In

more recent times they have

created shady "hut-shaped"cradles, as described byD'Annunzio. Sometimes a true

"paradise of flowers" is born,

as in the Eden garden on theisland of Giudecca, where "old

wild roses stil l intertwine with

Provence and Moss roses,

between irises and white li-

l ies."

In reality, the rose its own uni-

verse; a family tree with so

many branches that today

number about 150 species and

countless varieties, to meet

the needs of different green

spaces and the deepest

longings of every gardener.

Those who have the privilege

of access to private gardens

can discover the languid

beauty of the ancient varietiesor the proudly erect bearing of

the modern ones, sometimes

together in actual collections,

small botanical challenges in

which the owners love to test

themselves and to enjoy

blooms that dazzle guests and

mirror their own souls.

But just by walking aroundthe city one may encounter, in

the spectacular waterfal ls of

vines and creepers, such va-

rieties as the vigorous R.

banksiae lutea that spil l from

the walls of Ca' Foscari in the

corner looking towards the

can admire the summer use of

"colouration" in the designs

traced in the boxwood by the

multi-coloured blooms.

Nei pressi di San Samuele si

resta affascinati dall'esube-

ranza delle fioriture pastello di

R. 'Sea Foam' e R. 'Petal Pu-

shers' che dalla balaustra di

palazzo Malipiero Barnabò si

protendono verso l'acqua, da-

vanti a grandi macchie di

oleandro.

E nella laguna sud ci si può

spingere fino all'isola di SanLazzaro dove acquistare la ce-

lebre confettura di petali di ro-

se damascene preparata dagli

Ca' Nigra garden, a gift of love

from the Countess Elisabetta

Francesca Albrizzi to the fa-

mous Piedmontese diplomat

Costantino Nigra.

Near San Samuele one wil l be

fascinated by the exuberance

of the pastel blooms of the R.

'Sea Foam' and R. 'Petal Pu-

shers' that run from the balu-

strade of the palazzo Malipie-ro Barnabò into the water,

opposite large bushes of

oleander.

And in the southern lagoon

one can visit the island of San

me il bòcolo, i l bocciolo di ro-

sa rossa che secondo la tradi-

zione ogni veneziano donaalla propria amata il 25 apri-le, festa nazionale della Libe-

razione ma anche giornata

dedicata a San Marco pro-

tettore della città.

Ricordano le donne della Re-

sistenza quelle piantate

all'isola della Giudecca nel

Giardino della Memoria diVilla Hériot. Rose che parlano

chosen, a sign of deep and

moving sentiment, a hymn to

è come la gita fuori porta di

romani , mi lanesi , bolognesi…

Qui a Venezia di mura e

porte non ce ne sono, ma la

tradizione è forte. Per

esempio, c'è una bel l issima

citazione di Hugo Pratt su

una locanda di Malamocco:

uno sfogio (sogl iola) appena

grigl iato per Corto Maltese.I Murazzi (Murassi in vene-

ziano) sono la famosa operadi difesa a mare, un’impo-

nente, lunga diga in pietra

d’I stria costruita dal la Re-

pubbl ica di Venezia tra i l

1744 e i l 1782 (ultima grande

opera del la Serenissima).

Sul l 'isola di Pellestrina i Mu-

razzi iniziano a Santa Maria

del Mare e terminano, dopo

circa 10 chi lometri , a Ca’ Ro-

man e sostituiscono le pre-

cedenti palade, semplici pa-

lafitte riempite di sassi la cui

durata era molto più breve. In

epoca a noi vicina sono stati

integrati con una serie di

rire la formazione di bassifondi

e tratti di spiaggia. Quindi , è

da non più di quindici anni che

ci si può stendere sulla sabbiaa prendere il sole a Pellestri-na , prima c’erano soltanto

queste grandi pietre: i Murazzi .

In questa stretta l ingua di

sabbia che divide la laguna dal

mare, non ci sono alberghi ,

nemmeno locande o qualsiasi

tipo di struttura ricettiva,

soltanto un unico minuscolo

b&b aperto l ’anno scorso; ma

non c’è una sola discoteca, la

“movida” non sanno cosa sia e,

se non puoi fare a meno del

moj ito, te lo fai a casa tua

perché l ’unico cocktai l ricono-

sciuto è lo spritz l iscio. Al bar,

che vende anche i giornal i e le

sigarette, bevendo un’ombra e

sgranocchiando un bossolà

(da non confondere con i l bus-

solà dolce del l ’ isola di Burano),

si gioca a carte e si parla di

pesca: “poco pesse ‘sto ano,

come scoar el mar co’ un pi-

ròn”. Scopare i l mare con una

forchetta; tutti pescano a

“Going to the

islands to eat”

is for Venetians

l ike a trip gateway for the

people of Rome, Milan, and

Bologna... Here in Venice the

walls and gates don't exist,

but the tradition is strong. For

example, here is a beautiful

quote from Hugo Pratt about

a Malamocco inn: a sfogio (lo-

cal word meaning sole) just

gril led for the sailor and

adventurer Corto Maltese.The Murazzi (Murassi in the

Venetian dialect) is a famous

work of sea defence, an

imposing, long Istrian stone

dam built by the Republic of

Venice between 1744 and 1782

(the last great work of the Se-

renissima). On the island of

Pellestrina, the Murazzi start

at Santa Maria del Mare and

end, after about 10 kilometres,

at the Ca' Roman, replacing

the pre-existing palade -

simple piles fil led with stones,

whose lifespan was much

shorter. In more recent times

they were integrated with a

series of groynes, placed

perpendicular to the main

construction, with the aim of

encouraging the formation of

shallows and stretches of bea-

ch.

So it is for no more than

fifteen years that one has

been able to lay on the sandand sunbathe at Pellestrina;previously, there were only

these great stones: the Mu-

razzi. On this narrow strip of

sand that separates the la-

goon from the sea, there are

no hotels, inns or any kind of

accommodation, only a single

tiny B & B that opened last

year. There is no nightclub. In

fact, there is no "nightl ife" as

such, and if you simply cannot

do without a mojito, you'l l ha-

ve to make it at home becau-

se the only recognized

cocktail here is a spritz wi-

thout ice.

newspapers and cigarettes,

drinking in the shade and

munching a bossolà (a savou-

ry bread often in the form of a

ring - not to be confused with

vacanza, come è successo a

me, dopo qualche giorno

to ask - "walking on tiptoe",

as it were - because the envi-

ronment requires it, and thepeople here, though patientand kind, are less used to themore intrusive mass tourismthan the Venetians of the"centre". As the days pass

southern Lagoon , from

Chioggia to Venice, from the

hinterland to the Euganean
