This is great and I encourage that, but some students are telling the yard duty teachers that they have been told to play on the equipment until their parents arrive. This is not OK, so I ask you to make other arrangements to have your children collected so they are supervised. Unsupervised students at this time will be taken to the office until you arrive and collect them. Student Safety We are very fortunate to have four School Crossings that service our school. Please use them. It is scary seeing some parents dash across the road through the traffic to collect your children. I look forward to seeing parents setting a safe example when around the school precinct.

Student Supervision after School

I remind you that we have staff on duty supervising students till 3.45pm each day. After 3.45pm any

child in the school grounds should be supervised by parents. If you are unable to collect your child be-

fore this time Camp Australia run our After School Program. This is a tremendous way to ensure your

office. Students are not to be left at school playing after 3.45pm unless you are supervising them. I

Book Week Celebrations

What an amazing array of characters we saw last Thursday when the school donned many costumes to celebrate Book Week

Footy News

What a Game!! What’s the concern of a 30 point deficit in the second quarter? Nothing at all really… as long you kick the

next 10 goals? It was certainly a mixed game with the Cats taking the hold in the first half then the Hawks let fly and

showed their depth and ability to work hard and together to ensure a positive result. A final Home and Away game with a

win over the Magpies on Friday night will see the second spot secured and a rematch with Geelong the following week. It’s

been a tough run home for the Hawkers, but hopefully this has ensured the minds are sharp and the tough football that has

been needed will continue into the final series.

Go Hawkers!

Have a great week and keep smiling!

Neil Cunningham

Principal

The Flying Bookworm Incursion

By Chelsea.W and Loren from 3JW

On Thursday the 21st of August, most people from Kilberry

Valley dressed up as characters from books to celebrate book

week. Everyone brought their favourite books to school to

celebrate all the wonderful books that have been published.

On this day the company The Flying

Bookworm performed 3 acts from 3

books. 3JW and 3JP saw 2 actors act out

the books ‘The Bear Hunt', 'Custard The

Dragon’ and ’The Gingerbread Man’.

Some lucky students got to act out some parts in the

performances. The lucky students got to play the parts ’the

little cat’, ’the little dog’, ’the little mouse’ and ’the big

dragon’ in Custard The Dragon. Some other lucky students

got to play the parts ‘the chef, ‘the little old lady’, ‘the little

old man’, ‘the cow’ and ‘the horse’ in The Gingerbread Man.

We all hope you had a fantastic Book Week!

Using 2 forks, shred chicken. Cut kernels from corn cobs. Return chicken and corn to

PHYSICAL ACTIVITY IDEAS Fresh air and regular physical activity is essential to maintain a healthy body. There are many non-structured ways to encourage activity for children and the whole family.

If school is within walking distance, walk instead of driving them to

school. Enquire about Walking School bus in your state or territory.

Visit the beach or park and take the cricket bat/ball and frisbee.

Take the dog for a walk.

Do some backyard gardening and build a vegetable patch .

Visit the local swimming pool .

Visit the local park with playground equipment or take a footy .

Take a bike ride and find favorite local spots for a picnic or drink stop.

Find out, through recreation/community centres about your surrounding areas and organise

a bush walk in the hills or outer city.

Find outings that involve walking, e.g. visit the zoo or a museum.

Participate in a community walk (e.g. all Australian states have a ‘city to surf’ fun run / walk

plus many more community walks).

Choose presents for children that encourage activity, e.g. kites, outdoor equipment, gift vouchers to outdoor activity parks, canoe hire, roller rinks.

Encourage children and the family to help with household chores, such as painting, washing

windows or sweeping leaves.

WELFARE CORNER

Parenting is rarely easy

Being a parent in a new country has added challenges.

Just as it can be difficult for children to learn to be part

of two cultures, learning to parent ‘between’ cultures can

be stressful for families too. Taking a ‘best of both’

approach can help you work out ways to adapt your

parenting to suit your child’s needs, and your own.

Things parents and carers can do

Tell your children stories that help to share a sense

of pride in your culture.

Talk to children about the Australian cultural

values you appreciate. This will help them see

how they can be part of both cultures.

Seek support and advice from people you trust.

Talking with relatives and friends who understand

your values can help you think through the

different problems you might face as a parent.

Take an active interest in activities at your child’s

school. Get to know your child’s teacher and look

for ways to get involved at school.
