What is the Dewey Decimal System?
• It is a system that organizes books into ten categories.
• Keep books about the same topic together.
• The categories range from the 000s to the 900s.
• Let’s look at what is in each category.
000s – General Knowledge
• Books in this section answer the question, “What do you want to know?”
• It also contains books about:
– Computers and the internet
– Crop circles
– Monsters
– UFOs and aliens
100s – Psychology and Philosophy
• Books in this category answer the questions:
– “Who am I?”
– “How do I think?”
– “How do we see the world?”
• Books about:
– How people think and feel
– Friendship
– Ghosts
– Astrology
200s – Religion and Mythology
• Books in this section answer the question, “How did we get here?”
• Books about:
– Gods and goddesses
– Religions
– Mythology
– Bible Stories
300s – Social Studies and Folklore• Books in this section answer the questions:

How Dewey Call Numbers Work
• The first part is the number that tells us the category. Books are kept in numerical order by this number.
• The second part is the first three letters of the author’s last name.
• Notice how call numbers can be very specific. I don’t want you to worry about that and feel that you have to memorize a bunch of numbers.
• Just know that this call number is in the 500s. This lets us know that the book is about science.
