Historical Heroes: Frederick DouglassDirections: Read the passage below, then answer the questions that follow.

Frederick Douglass was born enslaved. He had a hard childhood. He moved around to different slave owners.

He escaped to freedom in the North when he was older. In the North, slavery did not exist. Frederick Douglass shared stories about the time he was enslaved. It made many people want to end slavery, too. He worked with other people to fight against slavery.

Douglass became a leader in the fight to end slavery. He helped create a newspaper called The North Star. It was an anti-slavery newspaper, meaning that the newspaper’s stories and messages were against slavery.

Douglass believed that all people should have equal rights. He helped to end slavery. After that, he worked to get African Americans the right to vote. He spoke out about the things he believed in.

Frederick Douglass was born enslaved. He had a hard childhood. He moved around to different slave owners.
