Buxhall and Shelland Church Fete – Cake Stall
Many, many thanks to all of you who donated handmade cakes and biscuits for the cake stall at this year’s fete.

Thank you for your generosity

From Onehouse Rectory
September always feels to me like another start to the year. For those engaged in education it certainly is and as meetings and events pick up again after the summer break we can be forgiven for thinking – here we go again. No sign of Christmas in the shops as I write but Harvest Festivals, Christmas planning, darker nights and the endless cycle of meetings are here again. For many it is the long run without break to the end of the year and many hate the darker nights. What happened to the Trafalgar and St Edmund Bank Holiday suggestions?
But into the ever circling year comes the New with the potential for transformation. We did very well at the Olympics, giving our international standing a great boost at a time when many feel Brexit has signalled isolationist/retro tendencies. The Olympics mirror our traditional sense of fair play. Our democracy can still allow the real concerns of people to speak over the political parties with the Brexit vote. The Olympic boost will perhaps give us new vigour on the world stage as we re-negotiate our international relationships, and, locally, think how we relate to those different to us and vice versa. Transformation indeed.
Again Buxhall and Shelland’s Fete was a wonderful success, the scaffolding is down at Great Finborough and the faculty granted for the new facilities there, Combs Roof repair is about to start and their Bell Fund is being relaunched to provide 8 (4 more) for that wonderful tower. Perhaps they can be ringing to celebrate the Centenary of the end of WWI? Baptisms are nearly weekly now… we have eight to be confirmed in their faith.
Then on the other hand the darkness of the terrorist atrocities in Continental Europe mirrored by those in Asia are closer to us now literally and emotionally. What is it, we wonder, that drives the terrorism of Isis and others? On the Sunday nearest their deaths Buxhall has commemorated each of the soldiers from that parish killed in the First World War. It has been poignant. The reasons for war and terrorism are complex but perhaps it is something to do with that most basic human instinct – greed – which seems to make some feel they are entitled to more than others – or even to take their lives. Injustice, greed, cheating and selfishness are probably in our DNA but
Harvest Festivals call us to remember that what we have is loaned by God, it may have been inherited, it may have been by the sweat of our brow because of our God-given abilities, but ultimately we all die. Will we be remembered as a people who were generous with what we have acknowledging it’s not really ours, looking forward with hope and an open hand – or as a people who meanly defended that which we have because

Great Finborough and District Garden Club
The traditional summer holiday for the Garden Club, when we sit back and admire the fruits of our labours and hopefully harvest and enjoy them too, has passed all too quickly and it is time to report on the events of the last two months as well as look forward to the season of autumn meetings.
The club hosted the annual Open Gardens on a day which produced heavy rain in the morning but cleared up nicely by mid-afternoon on 3 July. Visitor numbers were high with many travelling some distance to reach us. The combination of ticket sales, proceeds from the plant stall, tombola and teas meant that we were able to donate the grand sum of £1460 and €20 to St Andrew’s Church for the loo/kitchen fund.
The club is tremendously grateful to everyone who opened their gardens, displayed their classic cars, helped out on the day or just supported our endeavours. The preview evening BBQ “on the President’s Lawn” for those who volunteered to open their gardens was very well supported and thoroughly enjoyed by all.
The major social occasion of the gardening year, the annual club BBQ was held on 28 July and saw almost all of the club’s membership plus guests invade Pat and Peter Turner’s garden at the Little House to celebrate another successful Garden Club year. This year it was decided that the Pettiward Hall would be the recipient of funds raised at the BBQ. The weather was cooler than usual on BBQ night but this did not impair the generous and sociable spirit of the Club with £250 being raised. Thank you all. The horticultural aspect of the club was covered by admiration of Pat and Peter’s now mature prairie border, flourishing vegetable patch and bountiful tomatoes. Thank you both, your kindness in allowing us to use your lovely garden for this occasion is much appreciated by us all. I am sure that the members would also wish me to express our thanks to the team of cooks, John, Ian and Peter, who ably ensured that we all ate at the same time, to all members for the wonderful array of delicious salads and desserts and to those members who assisted with the setup and take down of the marquee, tables and chairs.
The first event in the new Garden Club year is a talk given by the Master Composter Alan Arnold with recipes, tips and thoughts on the current council views on composting. This will take place on 13 September at 7.30pm in the Upper Room of the Pettiward Hall.
Finally, if you are interested in joining the garden club or would like to join us for any event you will be very welcome. Meetings are held on the second Thursday of the month, membership is only £15.00 per household per year and there is a charge of £2.50 for guest attendance at any single meeting. For further information contact either: John Davey on 674401 or [email protected] or Judith Cameron on 672978 or [email protected].

Buxhall WI
It has been a busy summer for the Buxhall W.I. with a royal themed garden party kindly hosted at Hall
Orchard by Tomlinson Groundcare, meetings in July and August, evening walks and outings including Ladies’ Day at the races and Southwold Theatre.
We now look forward to the autumn. Our meeting on 21 September is entitled 'Hands-on First Aid'. We meet on the third Wednesday of each month at 7.30pm in Buxhall Village Hall. Visitors are assured of a warm welcome.
Jane (736160)
At the time of writing the dust is just about settling on the 2016 Buxhall and Shelland Church fete. Thanks to an amazing crowd of volunteers, hordes of visitors and perfect weather, we celebrated another largely successful fete. Regrettably the parade of classic cars had to be cancelled, our apologies for any disappointment this may have caused.
More details of the event will follow in the October edition and on our web-site at www.buxhallfete.co.uk in due course.
Huge thanks to all who contributed, worked and supported us as without you the fete could not happen. You are all STARS!!!
Arthur Hicks on behalf of all the Fete Committee.

it is Ours? That is not the way of Christ – that is not the way to lead a life that is full of richness and contentment. So the years ever circle and we all circle with them, might we take this new beginning to engage with the good and positive that we can see all around us? Might we contribute our mon-ey, time or talent to that which is good, fair and LIFE giving?
All good wishes

Buxhall & Shelland Church Fête – Tea Tent
Many, many thanks to all of you who so generously
donated your delicious homemade cakes and
savouries to the Tea Tent at the Fête on Saturday 6
August.
Some of our visitors obviously decided a cup of tea and something to
eat was their absolute priority on arrival and we were busy from the
start. The team rapidly swung into action and carried on non-stop until
the close. Everything donated was sold, and helped us raise a very
significant sum for our churches.
We are very grateful to all to those who helped us set everything up
beforehand and to the wonderful team who worked so hard on the
day to keep the hot water flowing, make and serve the drinks, serve
cakes, take the cash, wash up, clear tables, etc. etc.
And of course, thanks to all our customers who supported us on the
day!
Thanks to you all

Stowmarket Striders
A cheque for two thousand pounds has been presented by
Stowmarket Striders Running Club to MS-UK.
The £2,000 cheque was the latest donation to the charity from
Stowmarket Striders, which donates its profits each year from the
Stowmarket Half Marathon, in memory of Joe Cox.
Surrounded by club members the charity’s events co-ordinator, Mark
Drain, received the cheque on behalf of the charity from Race Director
Les Basham
This year’s race, held annually at Tomlinson Groundcare’s Buxhall
base, heralded a new course record by Aaron Scott of Notts AC who
ran the 13.2 miles in an amazing 1:09:17.
Over the last ten years the running club, which has over 350 members
of all ages and abilities, has donated more than £17,000 to MS-UK.
Stowmarket Striders meets twice weekly for friendly and social
training sessions supervised by UK Athletics-qualified coaches. They
ensure any training suits your ability and will help you achieve your
goals – whether it is simply running for fun or completing a marathon.
The next race being hosted by the club is their Golden Mile, on
Saturday 10 September when runners will be invited to try and run a
mile through Stowmarket from 2.00pm, finishing in the midst of the
town's beach party festivities. All profits from this race, which has
been generously sponsored by Cedarwood Veterinary Practice,
Munton’s, Sweatshop, Stowmarket Town Council and SynergyWeb,
will go to the Maria Trust.
And you can also now enter the annual Scenic Seven, on
Remembrance Sunday.

Buxhall and Great Finborough Over 60s
Candlestick Club
Club members have enjoyed two excellent outings since we last went into publication. In July we had a lovely day in Cambridge, calling at a garden centre on the way, we then enjoyed a two hour boat trip on the River Cam. This also included a delicious cream tea.
In August we were on the coach again, this time to Long Melford, stopping at Corn Craft on the way. In Melford some members enjoyed Melford Hall and the Beatrix Potter exhibition, while others walked down Long Melford Long Street enjoying the antique and tea shops.
Our final outing of 2016 is a day trip to Clacton. This is on Tuesday 6 September. Coach times are from Great Finborough Old Chapel at 9.45am, Buxhall Village Hall at 9.50am and on to Harleston for 10.00am. Please let Keith (736598) or Katie (736430) know if you wish to go.
