SEPTEMBER 20 11 Upcoming Maintenance Items For Your Yard Praying for Rain! The Drought Continues in Central Texas Eliminate Fire Hazards Extreme heat and no rain is the perfect mix for brush fires. Since November of 2010, wildfires have destroyed over 3million acres of Texas land. Protect your property by removing all dead brush and debris and by deeply watering 1-2 times a week. Mulch debris on site or transport it away to be disposed of in an environmentally sound manner. Just be sure to remove any diseased plants or weeds that have already gone to flower from material to be mulched and spread on flowerbeds so you can avoid contaminating healthy plants. Treating Turf Affected With Drought Stress If your grass is turning a blue-green or silverfish color, then chances are you’re lawn is suffering from drought stress. It’s no wonder. With temperatures hovering above 103 and watering restricted to just one day a week now, we’re all feeling the stress of a long- standing heat wave. Luckily all turf can survive drought stress, although some varieties hold up better than others. Buffalo: Very drought tolerant Bermuda, Zoysia: Drought Tolerant St Augustine: Tolerant in shade only Be sure to water to a depth of 4-6 inches and allow to dry thoroughly between waterings to further promote healthy drought resistance. September October Top off or replace mulch and aerate and top dress to replenish lost nutrients. November Apply fall fertilizer and prep outdoor spaces for holiday entertaining.
