CALL FOR VOLUNTEERS

In keeping with our touring tradition, Caroline, who had visited Iceland, invited the dining group for an evening of Icelandic cuisine at her house. The eve-ning started with wonderful appies of rejesalat med asparges (shrimp salad with white asparagus) and smoked salmon tartare on toasted points, a hearty Kjötsúpa (traditional Icelandic lamb soup), an excel-lent Hangikjöt (roast lamb) with brunadar kartoflur (caramelized potatoes) and rauokal (pickled red cab-bage), topped off with Vinarterta (Icelandic celebra-tion cake) and skyr (Icelandic yoghurt). All washed down with copious quantities of wine and Danish beer! Yet another great dining evening!—Colin James

The #1 Book Club met at Lila’s beautiful home on Heffley Lake. This was our last meeting before our summer break. Everyone contributed to a delicious luncheon.

We had just read “The Luncheon of the Boating Party” by Susan Vreeland. This book explores the painting by Augusta Renoir and the people involved.Great fun was had by all posing in fancy hats for this photo.Our next meeting is in September when we discuss the books we have read over the summer.

HIKING GROUP 2017

We also hiked Long lake June 29. Seven people cancelled or didn’t show up or some were confused

over the starry time of the hike! Great hike with viewing of the many winged birds on the lake and

the swallows that have take over the Bluebird boxes on the fence surrounding the lake.—Cheers Jim

A smaller group participated in the hike on 15th June, this time in the Dallas-Barnhartvale Nature Park. In Jim’s absence the hike was led by John Metcalfe of the Thompson Rivers Club, and of the 8 hikers, Colin was the only one from our club, with the majority (5) from the Grasslands Club. The hike started in Dallas climbing the gulley (pussy Willow Lane!) up onto the bench lands of Barnhartvale. John gave a stimulating running commentary on all aspects of the woodland and forest and the city’s attempts at wildfire mitiga-tion. The views over the South Thompson valley are exceptional from this trail. The hike was followed by a visit to Tumbleweeds Pub for refreshment.—Colin James

Jim led a group of 11 hikers up Peterson Creek on June 1st, about half starting at the bottom and the rest starting at the midway point off Whiteshield Crescent. Unfortunately, access to the upper falls was barred by a fence, and close viewing of the lower falls was limited because of high stream flow and slippery rocks. None-the-less the hike was a good one in fine weather. As usual the group visited a local hostelry following the hike, this time to Denny’s

SUMMER PICNIC (2017)On June 22 we had our last meeting before summer break and celebrated another successful Probus year with our annual Summer Picnic. The excellent lunch was again provided by the Presbyterian Church Ladies while music was provided by The String Busters. The lively old time music got people up and dancing, some joining a conga line lead by Lillian Maurice while others interpreted the rhythms with a variety of dance steps; Lillian Maurice & Susan Lacourciere did a jive, Anne and Frank Churchley created their own dance steps while Jesse & James Fedorak danced a lovely waltz. Those who preferred to watch included Norma & Jim Browne and Ron Haywood who was rather taken by Lois Cutler’s summery purse. It was a most enjoyable and lively party!

Conundrum

I am in a conundrum about this country’s birthday.Not wanting to dishonour the first people’s way

I want to celebrate Canada’s 150 years of life.But how do I rejoice while recalling past strife?

Do I acknowledge the past customs and culturesAnd forget how Europeans were land vultures?

Pioneers stories and bravery should to be enhancedBy remembering the powwows where people danced.

School taught us Mackenzie, Vancouver and ChamplainSailed and traversed North America and claimed

New territory but the existing society was not respectedSo it was to be smothered and rejected.

Turtle Island heroes like Tecumseh, Riel and Crazy HorseHad no recognition of being great leaders of course.

First Nation chiefs forgotten in past textbooks and omittedAlong with the atrocities that were committed.

We formed three countries on the back of the turtleWith great cost to the first people’s desperate hurtle

We now love Canada, United States and MexicoBut Chilcotin, Okanagan, Shuswap and Navajo

Lost their territories, rituals and rights.Canadians must recognize the past plights

As we stand by grieving graves, or hear the Last PostThink of the First People’s suffering, laments and cost.

Remembering all the histories of our great enclavesWe must rejoice in our glorious land’s anniversaryWhile we include all peoples’s sagas and diversity.

With goals for all to flourish and fly with birdsLet every heart soar with Chief Dan George’s words.
