INTRODUCTIONIn England, the Department of Trade and Industry’s (DTI’s) Grant for Research and Development provides grants to help individuals and small and medium sized businesses research and develop new, technologically innovative products and processes. It was introduced in June 2003, building upon the success of the Smart scheme which it replaced. From 1 April 2005 Grant for Research and Development will be delivered across England by the Regional Development Agencies, including London Development Agency.

In Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland similar support is offered through SMART and SPUR and delivered by the respective administrations - Scottish Executive, Welsh Development Agency and Invest Northern Ireland.

High-throughput screening,'HTS', is a powerful tool used by pharmaceutical companies in the discovery of drugs through assay testing. Microlite plates are the industry standard for conducting these assays and are currently available in 96, 384 and 1536 well formats. A current limitation of the 1536 well plate is the ability to adequately seal the plate for the application. This project will research the feasibility, application testing and robustness of use of Infra Red Transmission Diode laser welding techniques in sealing 1536 well plates for the HTS industry.

Solar Energized Electronically Controlled Airfield Light

An environmentally friendly airfield/helipad lighting system, which will use solar power energy and landfill disposable batteries. System will combine recent advances in solar power technology with light weight, lithium ion, phosphate battery technology.

Innovatively it will use a fluorescent bulb for increased luminescence and have low power consumption with inter-changeable lenses for different coloured lights including infared. Light source will be removed for use as a marshalling wand. The product will offer up to 15 hours of light with 9 hours of daylight charging and have an option of radio frequency remote control.

STAGE 2 - Cell Cycle Assay

The product is the development into a marketable product of the research work on Cell Cycle Assay. The project intends to develop an assay kit which can identify the stage of development of mammalian cells. The process centres on the absorption of different colour dyes by cells at different stages in their life cycle. The development of the cell can be observed through the change in colour.

Cleaner Disposal of Sewage Sludges

The project is directed towards research into the feasibility of processing sewage sludge into an appropriate format for use as fuel for a downdraft gasification combined heat and power installation. In solving a major waste disposal problem, a successful project would also therefore enhance non-fossil fuel generation capacity, reduce environmental loadings and create a revenue investment within NI.
