INTRODUCTIONIn England, the Department of Trade and Industry’s (DTI’s) Grant for Research and Development provides grants to help individuals and small and medium sized businesses research and develop new, technologically innovative products and processes. It was introduced in June 2003, building upon the success of the Smart scheme which it replaced. From 1 April 2005 Grant for Research and Development will be delivered across England by the Regional Development Agencies, including London Development Agency.
In Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland similar support is offered through SMART and SPUR and delivered by the respective administrations - Scottish Executive, Welsh Development Agency and Invest Northern Ireland.
Full information is available via the DTI website at www.dti.gov.uk/r-d or see the "Contacts" at the end of this Directory.
The businesses included in this Directory were selected to receive grants for research and development projects commencing during the period July 2003 to December 2003. Many of them may now be at the stage of seeking partners or investors to help turn the results of those projects into new products and processes. For further information about individual projects please contact the businesses direct.

Antibacterial Lantibiotic Actagardine
The objective of the project is to clone and sequence the biosynthetic pathway of a promising, but thus far un-exploited, antibiotic. The antibiotic is a natural product which has potential for the treatment of serious hospital infections including those caused by pathogens resistant to most currently used antibiotics. Cloning of the biosynthetic pathway will allow the biosynthetic machinery to be modified in order to produce novel analogues in a way that could not be achieved by conventional chemistry. In this way, the antibacterial spectrum and pharmaceutical properties of the antibiotic will be optimised for human therapeutic use.

Smart links for snake-arm robots
Previous developments have resulted in patented arm technology that is based on a compliant passive link design. The purpose of this micro-project is to modify the passive link design in order to extend the performance of the technology. In particular the project will look at ways to increase the length of the arm without increasing the arm diameter. This has clear implications for the range of tasks that become achievable and hence has a direct impact on the size of the snake-arm robot market.

Development of an Environmentally Friendly, Non-Toxic, Anti-Fouling Coating
The project aims to develop a non-toxic, anti-fouling coating for the aquaculture and yacht industries. Unlike any other anti-fouling system it does not pollute the environment with toxic substances. Algae, the basic building block for any sustainable bio-net, simply do not like air and do not settle where there is air. Using this phenomenon, the product wraps the net or yacht hull in a layer of air and naturally prevents fouling in a non-toxic manner.
