FONDAZZJONI CARITAS MALTA

FONDAZZJONI CARITAS MALTA is a Catholic Church umbrella organisation offering a wide

spectrum of social services to vulnerable and marginalized people with a mission to alleviate poverty,

promote human development, social justice and address social inequalities. This social mission is

achieved through the following services at 5, Lion Street, Floriana.

COUNSELLING AND SOCIAL WORK UNIT

Often, throughout life we go through difficult experiences, sometimes the reasons may be

psychological and/or relational and at other times it may be social or financial. During these

times a listening ear and helping hand may be just what we need to get back on our feet and

continue our journey. For this reason Caritas offers various services which fall under

the Counselling and Social Work Unit.

The service of psychotherapy and counselling is offered to adults, couples and young

adults. The team is made up of qualified psychotherapists and counsellors.

Social work assistance is provided to those families or individuals who may be struggling

with social or financial issues.

Second Hand Items Project (SHIP) is another Caritas project which aims to provide

individuals and families with second hand items, such as furniture and white goods.

Workshops tackling various psychological themes are offered to the public on a yearly

basis. The dates and topics of such workshops are advertised through media platforms and

on the Caritas facebook page.

The unit also offers different forms of support groups which are facilitated by dedicated volunteers.

Young Separated Support Group: open to individuals who are facing the struggles of a

marital separation.

Rose Group: which opens its doors to individuals over the age of 55, who are also struggling

with issues of separation and the loss of a loved one.

Thursday club: offering support to persons struggling with mental health difficulties.

Huntington’s Support – one-to-one support is offered to individuals who are diagnosed with

the condition of Huntington’s.

Emotions Anonymous: a support group offered to individuals who wish to explore their

emotions and how to process them more effectively.

Alcoholics Anonymous and Al Anon: open to individuals who struggle with an alcohol

addiction. Support is also available for the family involved.

Gambling Anonymous & Gam Anon: open to individuals and families who struggle with a

gambling addiction.

Caritas Malta Epilepsy Association Support Group: This Association aims at promoting

education and local awareness about epilepsy, especially because of the stigma suffered by

people with this condition in society, particularly in employment. It also offers support to the

client and his family.

COMMUNITY WELLBEING AND DEVELOPMENT UNIT

This Unit aims at identifying and understanding the needs of an evolving society with the aim of

creating projects and services that may offer support, provide education and guidance, so as to

ameliorate the psychosocial wellbeing of all citizens. These aims are reached through:

The Focus Programme in Schools

Parents’ Forums and Parenting Skills

Employee Assistance Programme (EAP) - Through the Employee Assistance Program

(EAP), Caritas Malta helps employees and their families resolve job-affecting problems,

irrespective of their position in the company.

Usury Foundation - Another form of support which is offered at Caritas, is guidance for

those who are affected by the difficult reality of Usury.

FOUNDATION FOR THE REHABILITATION OF DRUG ABUSERS (CARITAS MALTA)

At Outreach, our team welcomes persons with drug-related issues (drug users, family members and

significant others) and orientates users towards further holistic and integrated rehabilitation.

Fl-Outreach, it-tim tagħna jilqa’ persuni bi kwistjonijiet relatati mad-droga (dawk li jkunu qed jużaw

id-droga, membri tal-familja u persuni oħrajn sinifikanti) u jorjenta lil dawk li jkunu qed jużaw id-

droga lejn aktar riabilitazzjoni ħolistika u integrata.

Family Services:

The Family Service offers support to families of drug users to encourage their involvement in the

rehabilitation process in order to promote favourable outcomes for all. The service is offered at

Outreach Community Services at Triq il-Kapuċċini, Floriana.

Is-Servizz għall-Familja joffri appoġġ lill-familji ta’ dawk li jkunu qed jagħmlu użu mid-droga biex

jinkoraġġixxi l-involviment tagħhom fil-proċess ta' riabilitazzjoni sabiex jippromwovu riżultati

favorevoli għal kulħadd. Is-servizz huwa offrut fl-Outreach Community Services fi Triq il-Kapuċċini,

il-Furjana.

Male Shelter

At San Blas, limits of Żebbuġ, Malta, our Male Shelter assists clients in their detoxification process

and prepares them for rehabilitation. The Shelter also offers help to homeless people with a drug use

issue. In it, clients find a homely and caring environment, which gives them the stability and

support which may be missing from their lives.

F’San Blas, limiti ta’ Ħaż-Żebbuġ, Malta, il-Male Shelter jassisti lill-klijenti fil-proċess ta’

ditossifikazzjoni tagħhom u jħejjihom għar-rijabilitazzjoni. Ix-Xelter joffri wkoll għajnuna lil persuni

bla dar li jagħmlu użu tad-droga. Fih, il-klijenti jsibu ambjent familjari u ta’ kura, li jagħtihom l-

istabbilità u l-appoġġ li jistgħu jkunu nieqsa minnu f’ħajjithom. Il-Male Shelter huwa maħsub biex

jixbaħ dar normali, billi s-setup u d-dekor tiegħu huma kemm jista’ jkun familjari.

Rehabilitation

Male clients follow a full rehabilitation programme including residential and non-residential phases

at our facility limits of Żebbuġ, Malta. At our San Blas facility, male clients follow a full rehabilitation

programme in the following phases:

Residential

This is a fully residential phase which offers clients a safe and secure environment 24 hours a day.

Et Iris – Females’ Therapeutic Community

Rehabilitation for female who abuse from substances – At our residential programme at Et Iris,

situated in the facility of San Blas, female clients follow a full rehabilitation programme including

residential and non-residential phases in the style offered at San Blas Therapeutic Community for

males.

irġiel.

Prison Inmates Programme (PIP)

PIP specifically caters for persons who are serving a prison sentence and have a drug abuse problem.

Prisoners are granted leave to follow New Hope’s approved rehabilitation programme out of prison.

Clients at PIP follow the programme in homely surroundings at the Caritas Malta facility in Baħar

iċ-Cagħaq.

Il-PIP speċifikament jaħseb għal persuni li qed iservu sentenza ta’ ħabs u jkollhom problema ta’ abbuż

mid-droga. Il-priġunieri jingħataw permess biex isegwu l-programm ta’ riabilitazzjoni ta’ New Hope

barra mill-ħabs. Il-klijenti fil-PIP isegwu l-programm f'ambjenti familjari fil-faċilità ta’ Caritas Malta

f’ Baħar iċ-Ċagħaq.

Dar Charles Miceli: Semi-residential / Re-Entry / Aftercare / Evening Programme

Semi-Residential

When residents from the San Blas Therapeutic community finish their residential programme they

move to Mosta, a new service which started operating in March 2018. The service offers a semi-

residential programme to the residents who are still following the therapeutic programme. The aim

of this service is to help residents in their transition from a detached therapeutic programme, back

to the challenges of daily lives.

Meta r-residenti mill-komunità terapewtika ta’ San Blas jispiċċaw il-programm residenzjali tagħhom

imorru f’dar fil-Mosta, servizz ġdid li beda jaħdem f'Marzu 2018. Is-servizz joffri programm semi-

residenzjali għar-residenti li għadhom isegwu l-programm terapewtiku. L-għan ta' dan is-servizz

huwa li jgħin lir-residenti fit-transizzjoni tagħhom minn programm terapewtiku maqtugħ mis-soċjetà,

lura għall-isfidi tal-ħajja ta' kuljum.

Aftercare

Aftercare is a programme that offers persons who have successfully completed different rehabilitation

programmes a support network to help them maintain drug abstinence and achieve fulfilment in life.

Aftercare huwa programm li joffri network ta' appoġġ lil persuni li temmew b'suċċess programmi ta’

riabilitazzjoni differenti. Dan jgħinhom iżommu l-astinenza tad-droga u jiksbu sodisfazzjon fil-ħajja.

Evening Programme

Caters for persons recovering from addiction and who do not require to follow a residential

programme. They are offered individual and group therapy in evening sessions. They are offered

outpatient service including individual and group therapy and extra curriculum activities.

Għal persuni li jixtiequ jieqfu mill-vizzju tad-droga u li minħabba ċirkustanzi ma jkunux jistgħu

jsegwu programm residenzjali. Dawn jiġu offruta attenzjoni individwali u fi gruppi permezz ta’

laqgħat ta’ filgħaxija. Jiġu offruti wkoll servizz ta’outpatient li jinkludi wkoll servizz individwali u fi

gruppi.

The Diaconia Unit supports parishes in the promotion and provison of diaconia at a local level. The

aim of the unit is to work with parish priests and diaconia commissions by being available as a focal

point for support, liaison, guidance, and problem solving. The unit provides formation and training

to the members of diaconia commisions.

The unit also works closely with other diocesan offices, civil entities and NGOs to provide support to

parishes and pastoral operators in view of offering a more efficient and effective service.

The HelpAge is an organization of the groups for senior citizens within the parishes where peers

meet, socialize and be of service to the pastoral work of the parish. The HelpAge Unit offers support

and training for the leaders of these groups, to empower them to help and support their peers. The

Unit organizes national activities for the elderly and create awareness through advocacy.

Il-Unit tad-Djakonija jappoġġja l-parroċċi fil-promozzjoni u t-twettiq tas-servizzi ta’ djakonija fuq

livell lokali. L-għan tat-taqsima huwa li taħdem mal-kappillani u l-kummissjonijiet tad-djakonija billi

tkun disponibbli bħala punt ta’ riferiment għal sostenn, kollegament, gwida u soluzzjoni ta’ problemi.

Il-Unit jipprovdi wkoll formazzjoni u taħriġ lill-membri tal-kummissjonijiet djakonija. Il-Unit

jaħdem mill-qrib ukoll ma’ uffiċċji djoċesani oħra, ma’ entitajiet ċivili u NGOs biex jipprovdi appoġġ

lill-parroċċi u lill-operaturi pastorali bil-ħsieb li jiġi offrut servizz aktar effiċjenti u effettiv.

Il-HelpAge hija organizzazzjoni ta’ gruppi mill-anzjani għall-anzjani fil-parroċċi, fejn jiltaqgħu ma

sħabhom u jkunu ta’ servizz għall-ħidma pastorali tal-parroċċa. L-HelpAge Unit toffri appoġġ u

formazzjoni lill-mexxejja ta’ dawn il-gruppi, biex jgħinu u jappoġġjaw lil sħabhom. Il-Unit

torganizza attivitajiet nazzjonali għall-anzjani u toħloq kuxjenza permezz ta’ promozzjoni soċjali.

FONDAZZJONI DAR IL-HENA, set up between the Government of Malta (the then Ministry for

the Family and Social Solidarity), the Alfred Mizzi Foundation and the then Caritas Malta offers:

an emergency shelter for males at Dar Papa Frangisku, 126, Fleur-de-Lys Road, B’Kara,

for persons experiencing material deprivation, social exclusion and poverty and are offered

for free food (mid-day and dinner), a place to sleep (if available) and social support.

an emergency shelter for females at Dar Maria Dolores, at 69, Fleur de Lys Road, B’Kara,

experiencing material deprivation, social exclusion and poverty and are offered for free food

(mid-day and dinner, from Dar Papa Frangisku), a place to sleep (if available) and social

support.

‘REACH’ – a residential shelter at 33 Triq il-Hida, San Gwann, which is a long term

residential programme for homeless individuals and families offering basic life skills and

social support.

- sapport spiritwali u akkumanjament spiritwali għall-koppji u/jew persuni single li qed jaħsbu

għal, jew jinsabu fi proċess lejn, jew diġa huma separati.

- strateġija ta’ prevenzjoni b’kuntatt personali u/jew fi gruppi b’laqgħat li joffru sapport. Din l-

istrateġija li hija b’koordinament ma’ Caritas Malta, tindirizza temi bħal: it-telfa u l-għajnuniet

meħtieġa f’mumenti hekk delikati fil-ħajja ta’ dawn il-persuni; id-dixxerniment spiritwali

flimkien ma’ laqgħat ta’ formazzjoni ħolistika.

The office of the Coordinator for Pastoral Work with Separated Persons, offers its service in

coordination with Caritas Malta and Cana Movement, and also with parishes. This office provides:

- spiritual support and spiritual accompaniment to couples and/or single persons who are

thinking of, or are in the process of, or are already separated from their partners.

- a prevention strategy through personal and/or group support encounters. Such strategy which

is also coordinated with Caritas Malta, addresses grief and advocacy; spiritual discernment;

guidelines and holistic formation programmes.

- on parish level, encounters are provided to groups aiming at strengthening marital

relationships and/or are experiencing difficult moments in their marital relationships.

This office works in collaboration with various NGOs, Civil and Church entities who directly or

indirectly work and are concerned for the holistic welfare of families and couples, especially those

passing through difficulties such as marital separation.

Dar Merħba Bik works with women who have experienced gender based violence and domestic

violence along with their children. It helps them establish a way of life which best meets their needs

and which best helps them to develop their potential.

Dar Merħba Bik:

Our Mission is to:

… Provide compassionate support, within a safe space to survivors of violence, gender-

based violence and domestic violence.

The overall aim of Dar Santa Bakhita; will be to provide Second Stage accommodation through

assisted flats to female survivors of violence, gender-based violence as well as domestic violence and

their children for a period of 12 months.

Our Objectives are to:

1. To provide adequate and safe assisted flats for a period of 12 months, whilst being closely

followed and monitored by the Residential Social Worker through weekly sessions, care plans

and case reviews;

2. To provide a tailor-made life skills program which enables residents following this program

to effectively deal with the demands and challenges of life whilst living independently after

the 12 months;

3. To assist and support residents during court proceedings;

4. To offer psycho-social services such as counselling and therapy;

5. To promote reconciliation with self, with family — in whatever way possible or desirable, with

society and with God;

6. To enhance public awareness about the issue of Violence, Gender Based Violence and

Domestic Violence;

7. To actively participate on all Local and International Platforms on the issue of Gender Based

Violence and Domestic Violence.

Fondazzjoni Sebħ’s mission was established in 1956 to coordinate the activities of the various

Children’s Homes existing on the island and to promote the welfare of the children living in these

homes. The Foundation was officially recognised by the Commissioner for Voluntary Organisations

in November 2018 under the previous name of Fondazzjoni Ejjew Għandi and was renamed

Fondazzjoni Sebħ in January 2019.

Il-Fondazzjoni tieħu ħsieb 40 tifel u tifla li jgħixu fl-erba’ djar tagħha. It-tfal kolha huma riferuti u

jibqgħu segwiti mill-Aġenzija Appoġġ. L-għan prinċipali tal-Fondazzjoni fid-Djar tat-Tfal hu l-

The Foundation takes care of 40 children in its four residential homes. All children are referred by

Dar Qalb ta’ Ġesù huwa Xelter tat-Tieni Stadju biex jakkomoda familji, nisa u uliedhom, li sofrew

minn vjolenza domestika. Wara li jkunu ilhom f'Kenn ta’ Emerġenza għal perjodu qasir ta’ żmien, il-

familji huma riferuti lilna mill-Fondazzjoni Appoġġ. Il-familji huma milqugħa hawn għal perjodu ta’

Dar Qalb ta’ Ġesù is a Second Stage Shelter to accommodate families, women and their children,

who have suffered from domestic violence. After having been in an Emergency Shelter for a short

period of time, families are referred to us by the Appoġġ Foundation. Families are welcomed here

for a period of up to approximately one year to enable mother and children to regain their self-esteem

and skills towards eventual independent life.

ta’ kura li tipprovdi.

Id-Dar tal-Providenza was founded by Mons. Michael Azzopardi in 1965 with the aim of offering a

home with a warm and family-like environment for persons with disabilities who for some reason or

another cannot stay living with their family. Since then Id-Dar tal-Providenza has supported its

residents to participate in and enjoy the quality of life within the community.

Today Id-Dar tal-Providenza is made up of five residences: Villa Monsinjur Gonzi, Villa Papa

Giovanni and Villa Papa Luciani. It also includes four community homes, called Żerniq in Siġġiewi,

Akkwarell in Qawra, Dar Pirotta in Birkirkara and Shalom in Zurrieq.

At the moment, Id-Dar host hundred and fifteen persons between the ages of fourteen and eighty

years. It also offers respite services on a regular basis to families of persons with disabilities, thus

offering them support to enable the disabled family member to continue to live within their family.

Id-Dar Tal-Providenza, which is built on faith in Divine Providence, relies to a very large extent on

the generosity of its benefactors and the public donations it receives to fund the high level of care it

provides.

The Emigrants’ Commission was established to help and protect people in need by offering them free

services, counselling and protection. The Emigrants’ Commission came into being in 1950 due to the

huge exodus of Maltese to foreign lands because of over population and unemployment. The aim was

to offer help to those who intended to settle abroad. When displaced persons started seeking refuge

in Malta, its services covered all those affected by migration including immigrants and refugees.

Under the patronage of the Emigrants' Commission there are other organisations whose activities

are orientated to help immigrants and tourists in more specific areas and it also houses Associations

The main services are aimed for emigrants who seek help in many forms from the office. For many

years refugees have been helped in many ways. Protection, basic needs, accommodation, recreation

and schooling are sympathetically dealt with. Help for refugees is also solicited by the Commission

through its very useful contacts both domestic and foreign. The Emigrantss Commission has about

10 homes at its disposal, a centre in Balzan, and homes in Valletta and Floriana, where

approximately 150 of the most vulnerable refugees are accommodated, free of charge. Some of these

homes are privately owned, while the others are church homes.

The activities of the Emigrants' Commission are various and many such as:

Is-SAS iwettaq ħidma fil-parroċċi ma’ persuni fid-diffikultà permezz tal-membri tal-Azzjoni

Kattolika Maltija stess jew permezz ta’ persuni viċin il-ħidma pastorali fil-parroċċa. Is-SAS jisħaq

dwar l-importanza li dan kollu jsir permezz tal-Kummissjoni Djakonija jew b’koordinazzjoni mal-

istess Kummissjoni Djakonija.

Taħriġ lill-Voluntiera

Is-SAS joffri taħriġ kontinwu lill-voluntiera biex jkunu jistgħu jagħtu sehemhom lil min hu fil-bżonn.

Sehem biex titwettaq il-Ġustizzja Soċjali fis-Soċjetà

Is-SAS jorganizza seminars u laqgħat biex it-tagħlim soċjali tal-Knisja jkun aktar magħruf. Iwettaq

ma’ persuni bi problemi ta’ saħħa mentali u persuni bi bżonnijiet speċjali.

Għajnuna diretta lill-Kummissjoni Ħidma għall-Morda u Persuni b’Diżabbiltà tal-AKM

permezz ta’ għajnuna finanzjarja biex l-istess Kummissjoni tkun tista’ twettaq il-ħidma tagħha fuq

Moviment tal-‘Unborn Child’

Is-SAS waqqaf dan il-Moviment fl-2003 biex jippromwovi d-drittijiet tat-tarbija li għadha ma

twelditx. F’din id-direzzjoni ssir ħidma li ma taqtax. Il-Moviment, barra lokalment, għandu kuntatti

internazzjonali biex id-drittijiet tat-tarbija jkunu mħarsa.

The Society of Saint Vincent de Paul offer financial assistance to persons who have temporary

financial needs. Usually, Parish Priests, Social workers, lawyers, medical doctors and other

professionals refers the persons in need of assistance to the Society. Some contact the Society directly

by writing or phoning.

As the Society does not have a premises where to meet, they meet at the President’s office, therefore

they have no formal opening hours.

Who we are

The St Jeanne Antide Foundation is a registered social purpose

non-profit organisation. It is the social care services arm of the

Sisters of Charity. Its overarching objective is to provide

professional support services to very vulnerable individuals and

families who face complex life challenges and those who are

sliding into poverty and are socially excluded.

1. Two Family Centres:

Ċentru Antida in the heart of Tarxien serving families from

Tarxien, Paola, Fgura, Żabbar and Santa Lucia. Open daily from

Mondays to Saturday. Services include the following:

Social Work: home-visits, family care plans, street

outreach work, advocacy, referral to other agencies,

information dissemination, emotional support.

Volunteer Handymen in support of vulnerable and poor

families.

Learning Support opportunities for children and adults

including self-esteem groups, literacy groups for

vulnerable youths, courses for parents on learning

strategies.

Volunteering opportunities, included supported

volunteering for service users.

Volunteer Befrienders for lonely, home-bound elderly

persons.

Charity shop to raise funds and as a means to provide

free items to poor families.

Ċentru Enrichetta in Birżebbuġa: Community Social Work;

Family Literacy Support; non-formal education.

2. SOAR Service: advocacy and support by survivors for fellow

victims and survivors of domestic violence

violence; information leaflets.

3. LWIEN Service: support to family caregivers of persons with

severe mental illness: family consultations by Senior Psychiatric

Nurse, support groups, home-visits, social work, literature.

4. Y-Assist: 2 residences for vulnerable mothers and their

children. The service includes accommodation, an educational

care plan, group-based activities and training that enables the

mothers to move to independent living.

5. Emotional Freedom Service for persons wanting to be free

from their anger, fear, anxiety, grudges and resentment or other

emotional distress.

6. Centring Prayer Group for contemplative prayer practice.

International reach

In partnership with congregations in developing countries, the

Foundation formulates anti-poverty projects and obtains funding

for them through the Ministry for Foreign Affairs. Projects have

been completed in Pakistan, Central African Republic, South

Sudan, Malawi and Peru.
