Very interesting meeting this week, guest speaker was Sarah Tadier from Black Swan

Health who amongst other services run the Street Doctor project, they run two fully equipped light trucks, i.e. Freo Street Doctor.

Freo Street Doctor is a mobile General Practice (GP) service, which provides

care to many in the community experiencing disadvantage including rough

sleepers and those who are homeless. The service runs in Fremantle,

Cockburn, Willagee, Mandurah, Rockingham and Kwinana.

Our club meeting for Monday 29th July has been cancelled because a number

of members and partners will be attending the Rotary Club of Attadale meeting

at Tomkins-on-the-Swan celebrating 30 years of Women in Rotary.

Professor Lyn Beazley AO will be speaking on ‘Women in Science’

At present our club has five women members, our first female member was

PP Genevieve Carr who joined us in November 1999, another seven women

are listed as ex members of our club.

Women were historically excluded from Rotary despite a number of attempts

to change from as early as 1964 the Council on Legislation had on its agenda

‘to permit the admission of women to Rotary’ these items were voted ‘to be

withdrawn’ Not until 4th May 1987 when the U.S. Supreme Court ruled that

Rotary Clubs may not exclude women from membership.

22nd July 2019 President Report

Please note;

We made the decision last night to cancel our own 29th July meeting due to reduced numbers.

Several notified they will be absent and others attending Attadale’s meeting

After a power fault caused the cancellation of the performance of “Oliver” at Koorliny on

Friday night we returned on Sunday afternoon for yet another excellent production.

Thanks go to Bob Thompson for once again organising the outing for us all. At one stage there

were 43 actors on stage and most of them children. That in itself was a massive feat and

combined with the live music was an exceptional performance.

Bob and I will be in Victoria next week to visit our three children held captive by the Qantas

cheap fare timetable.

Mike Nella has agreed to take my place as President that night for which I am grateful. Diane

will also be enjoying a well-earned holiday with Claudia in Bali. Brian Mc has stepped up to

cover for her while she is away so we both thank him for keeping the seat he recently vacated

warm in her absence.

On the 29th Attadale are celebrating the 30th anniversary of women in Rotary and several of

our couples will be attending that function. Several others will be otherwise occupied so we

made the decision last night to cancel our own meeting due to the reduced numbers. If this

changes your mind attending the Attadale function contact Gail McCulloch to see if there are

still seats available. Gail’s number is 93304928 or 0423255940.

The meeting after that, the 5th August is planned as a TalkFest night again with some fun

tricky questions to be answered.

Also try to think of some slogans for our Bumper stickers to bring on that night and we’ll

narrow the field so that we can proceed to production.

In mail received from Alzheimer Research Foundation we were invited to attend the preview

of the screening of Bryan Brown’s appearance in the movie “Palm Beach”.

Saturday 27th July, 10 am to 12:30 pm, The Windsor Cinema

Women in Rotary

The 1989 Council on Legislation vote to admit women into Rotary clubs worldwide remains a watershed moment in the history of Rotary.

“My fellow delegates, I would like to remind you that the world of 1989 is very different to the world of 1905. I sincerely believe that Rotary has to adapt itself to a changing world,” said Frank J. Devlyn, who would go on to become RI president in 2000-01.

The vote followed the decades-long efforts of men and women from all over the Rotary world to allow the admission of women into Rotary clubs, and several close votes at previous Council meetings.

The response to the decision was overwhelming: By June 1990, the number of female Rotarians had skyrocketed to over 20,000. By July 2016, the number of women worldwide had surpassed 250,000.

Women immediately embraced the leadership opportunities provided by their clubs and have been making an impact in communities around the world.

History of Women in Rotary

Until 1989, the Constitution and Bylaws of Rotary International stated that Rotary club membership was for males only.

In 1978, the Rotary Club of Duarte, California, USA, invited three women to become members. The RI Board withdrew the charter of that club for violation of the RI constitution. The club brought suit against RI claiming a violation of a state civil rights law that prevents discrimination of any form in business establishments or public accommodations. The appeals court and the California Supreme Court supported the Duarte position that Rotary could not remove the club's charter merely for inducting women into the club. The United States Supreme Court upheld the California court indicating that Rotary clubs do have a "business purpose" and are in some ways public-type organizations.

This action in 1987 allowed women to become Rotarians in any jurisdiction having similar "public accommodation" statutes. In October of 1987, the Rotary Club of Angels-Murphys D5220 inducted three women and in spite of threats to quit Rotary by some of the older male members - none did. Two of these three women went on to lead the A-M Rotary Club as president and one those has just completed over two years as charter president of the Angels Camp Centennial Rotary Club (a club which is very proud of its 50% female membership). That president has completed 19 years of perfect attendance.

The RI constitutional change was made at the 1989 Council on Legislation, with a vote to eliminate the "male only" provision for all of Rotary. Since that time, women have become members and leaders of clubs and districts throughout the world.

Polio This Week 17th July 2019

• In Central African Republic, a series of previously-detected/reported

VDPV2s have now been officially classified as ‘circulating’. Since

initial detection of the viruses in May, the country had already

operationally considered these viruses to represent an outbreak and

implemented emergency outbreak response and declared the event to

be a national public health emergency.

• A cVDPV2 originating in Jigawa, Nigeria, continues to

spread. Genetically-linked virus has been confirmed from an

environmental sample in Ghana.

• In Myanmar, a cVDPV1 has been reported and response measures are

being implemented. Neighbouring countries have been informed of

the confirmed cVDPV1, and surveillance for polioviruses is being

strengthened across the region. Myanmar had previously successfully

stopped a cVDPV2 outbreak in 2015.

• Summary of new viruses this week:

Afghanistan — one wild poliovirus type 1 (WPV1) case and one

WPV1-positive environmental sample;

Pakistan— four WPV1 cases and three WPV1-positive environmental

samples;

Nigeria —three circulating vaccine-derived poliovirus type 2

(cVDPV2) cases, two cVDPV2-positive environmental samples, and

one cVDPV2 isolated from a healthy contact;

Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) — five cVDPV2 cases;

Central African Republic (CAR) — three cVDPV2 cases, one case

classified cVDPV2 based on a positive contact, and ten cVDPV2

community/close contacts ;

Angola — one cVDPV2 isolated from healthy child;

Ghana — one cVDPV2-positive environmental sample linked to

Jigawa/Nigeria outbreak;

Myanmar — two cVDPV1 cases and two cVDPV1 positive contacts.

Inner Wheel. (History)

The Organisation was officially founded in January 1924 by Margarette Golding, a nurse, business woman and the wife of a Manchester Rotarian who had met with 26 other wives in November 1923. Women were not allowed to join the Rotary Club. The first meeting was held on 10 January 1924 when 27 ladies attended. This date is now known as "International Inner Wheel Day". This organisation was established for the wives and daughters of Rotarians. Gradually other groups formed themselves into Inner Wheel Clubs and in 1934 the Association of Inner Wheel Clubs in Great Britain and Ireland was formed.

The number of clubs around the world grew and in 1967 the International Inner Wheel came into being. There are clubs in over 100 countries around the world. Inner Wheel clubs are grouped into districts with twenty-nine districts within Great Britain and Ireland. Most clubs meet monthly, often with a speaker at the meeting but members meet socially on a regular basis.

In 1989, Rotary International allowed women as members. Despite women now being able to join Rotary, Inner Wheel Clubs continue in many countries.

The International Inner Wheel objectives are (a) promoting true friendship, (b) encouraging the ideals of personal service, and (c) fostering international understanding.

In 2008, Inner Wheel had over 100,000 members in 102 countries and was one of the largest women's organisations with consultative status at the United Nations.

The husband had just finished reading the book 'Man of the House.' He stormed into

the kitchen and walked directly up to his wife, pointing a finger in her face, he said,

'From now on I want you to know that I am the man of the house and my word is law.

I want you to prepare me a gourmet meal tonight, and when I'm finished eating my

meal, I expect a scrumptious dessert. Then, after dinner, you are going to draw me my

bath so I can relax. And when I'm finished with my bath, guess who's going to dress

me and comb my hair? His wife replies, 'the funeral director would be my guess'.

Why did I get divorced? Well, last week was my birthday. My wife didn't wish me a happy birthday.

My parents forgot and so did my kids. I went to work and even my colleagues didn't wish me a

happy birthday. As I entered my office, my secretary said, "Happy birthday, boss!" I felt so special.

She asked me out for lunch. After lunch, she invited me to her apartment. We went there and she

said, "Do you mind if I go into the bedroom for a minute?" "Okay," I said. She came out 5 minutes

later with a birthday cake, my wife, my parents, my kids, my friends, & my colleagues all yelling,

"SURPRISE!!!" while I was waiting on the sofa... naked.

A man went to his lawyer and told him, "My neighbor owes me $500 and he won’t pay up. What

should I do?" "Do you have any proof he owes you the money?" asked the lawyer. "Nope," replied

the man. "OK, then write him a letter asking him for the $5,000 he owed you," said the lawyer. "But

it's only $500," replied the man. "Precisely. That’s what he will reply and then you’ll have your

proof!"

Five out of six people agree that Russian Roulette is safe.

Brian had asked Dave to help him out with cutting his rather large garden hedge after work, so Dave

went straight over to Brian's home. When they got to the front door, Brian went straight up to his

wife, gave her a big hug and told her how beautiful she was and how much he had missed her at

work. When it was time for supper, he complimented his wife on her excellent cooking, kissed her

and told her how much he loved her. Once they were cutting the privet, Dave told Brian that he was

surprised that he fussed so much over his wife. Brian said that he' d started this about six months ago,

it had revived their marriage, and things couldn't be better. Dave thought he'd give it a go.

When he got home, he gave his wife a massive hug, kissed her and told her that he loved her.

His wife burst into tears. Dave was confused and asked why she was crying. She said, 'This is the

worst day of my life. First, little Nigel fell off his bike and twisted his ankle. Then, the washing

machine broke and flooded the basement. And now, you come home drunk!'
