Within minutes, one of them was dead. The 11-year-old boy and his nine-year- old friend from Broadlands Village, Strand, are receiving counselling from a psychologist, while eight-year-old Zephwin Mentoor, who was in Grade 2 at Rusthof Primary, will be buried this Saturday. The 11-year-old will appear in court to- day (Thursday) on a charge of murder after the tragedy that played itself out in Daisy Street on Monday afternoon. Constable Mbulelo Mafuna, spokes- person for Strand police, says the gun involved, a 9 mm PX4 gun, is similar to a police gun. The boys allegedly found the gun wrapped in two Shoprite bags in Broad- lands Road. It had apparently been re- ported stolen. They took it to the 11-year- old’s home, where they then apparently removed bullets out of the magazine. The boy’s sister, 29, was in her bed- room when she heard a loud bang at 15:00. “I told a friend the children were throwing stones on the roof again and asked him to have a look,” she says. She then saw her brother and two friends running from the house. Two of the boys ran towards the street, but the eight-year-old collapsed. “Zebbie came running towards me, but turned around and collapsed under the washing line,” she said. She rushed to him and was joined by neighbours, who tried to resuscitate him. “We did not know he’d been shot. The neighbour applied CPR and we hung a blanket over the washing line for shade.” It was only when a paramedic moved the boy half an hour later and bullets were found under his body that they re- alised that he had been shot. “His hand was clenched and when the ambulance man moved him, three bul- lets were found under him,” she said. The 11-year-old was questioned by po- lice on Monday and released into the care of his sister. A Broadlands Park boy of eight died in a shooting accident after he and friends picked up a gun. die taxi’s ook ’n vuurwapen in ’n taxi opgele-wer, sê hy.Simons sit egter tans met sy hande in sy

’n On-

gelisensieerde vuurwapen is sowat twee jaargelede tydens ’nroetine-patrollievandiepoli-sie in ’n taxi gevind,” sê hy.

Hy sê dat drie busse voorheen as vervoer-

Business sappedbypower cutsDALEEN FOUCHÉ

Joblossesandbusinessclosuresarebecom-ing possibilities for local businesses as theongoing power cuts start to take their toll.

Earlier this month, Eskom announced thatSouth Africans will have to live with powercuts for the next three years.Andmanylocalbusinessesarealreadystrug-

a fish retailer in the Gants Centre, says theyare struggling to cope with load shedding. De-spite it having little effect on their stock, cus-tomers do not visit the store during load shed-ding. “We also have to stop our take-away ser-vice, because it’s reliant on electricity.”Fish forAfrica is looking to buy a generator,

but Da Silva says a generator to power theirmassive fridges – which can hold up to 60 tonsof fish – will cost a fortune.Neves Gattinho, co-owner of Central Mini

Market in the Somerset West CBD, says al-though they have a generator, it can only sup-ply electricity to the lights which uses single-phase electricity, but not the fridges, whichneeds three-phase electricity. Two computers are currently in for repairs

as a result of damage from the power surgesthat result from electricity being restored.Gattinho urges shoppers to bring a cool bag

along when shopping, as load shedding inter-rupts the cold cycle for two hours at a time. She says although this does not affect the pro-duce, many customers do not return home im-mediately after shopping, causing the produceto be out of a fridge for even longer than thetwo hours induced by load shedding.Gattinho describes the future as “dark”.

“This is a very difficult time,” she says.

Central MiniMarket is considering alterna-tive sources of energy for the fridges.Even though Lourensford Wine Estate

launched a state of the art solar farm on theroof of its tasting roomandcellar late last year, the estate is still heavily affected by load shed-ding.KoosJordaan,generalmanager, explainsthat the purpose of the 500mw solar farm wasto reduce both Eskom bills and the farm’s car-bonfootprint.Asthesolarfarmcannotproducean uninterrupted supply of energy, the wineproduction is severely affected. He says their current generator cannot sup-

ply the entire cellar with power as the cellarwould require a massive generator.“The most important aspect of winemaking

is cooling,” says Jordaan. “The industry usesthe most of its electricity on keeping the winecool in its various stages of production. Thecooling processmust be uninterrupted, or elsethe quality may be compromised. This maylead to financial losses.”But Jordaan says the blackouts also affect

other facets of production such as the pressingprocess. Ripe grapes have to be processed andpressed as soon as possible and without inter-ruption. “We cannot be reliant on the nationalgrid any more.”Marc Sturn, manager of The Cattle Baron in

Somerset West, says their food stock is not af-fected by load shedding as the restaurant’sfreezerscanremaineffective forupto24hours.But turnover, he says, is heavily affected be-

cause the kitchen cannot run without power.“We have to close our doors when the powergoes out.”Further losses are incurred because staff

membershave tobepaid forbeingatworkdur-ing blackouts.Somebusinesseshavemanagedtoplug inso-

lutions.

The Friedman & Cohen department store inStrand is able to keep the lights on and the tillsoperating with its backup generator.Grant Goodwin, director of Friedman & Co-

hen, says that 20% of the lights are poweredby the generator, but thiswill soonbe doubled. With careful planning, the restaurant is alsoable to keep operating during blackouts.Nina’s Family Restaurant in Beach Road,

Strand is also fully operational during black-outs. “Ninety-seven percent of our operation

runs on gas,” says owner Johnny Bezuiden-hout.Isabel Nortje, owner of construction equip-

ment supplier Turner Morris in Strand saysgeneratorsalesare“verybrisk”,withstockfly-ing off the shelves as it comes in.The demand for generators for households

andbusinesses is veryhigh. “Currentlywe on-ly have generators that can supply energy topower tools, not entire households. But we areexpecting new stock next week.”

Tow-truckers in court forassaultDELIAH BRINKHUIS

Three employees of En RouteTowing (aged 32, 40 and 50) werearrested on Tuesday and will ap-pear in the Somerset West Magis-trate’s Court today (Thursday) toface a charge of assault.

This follows after a charge of as-sault was laid against the company’semployees and owner after a fenderbender ended in a fist fight in Bizwe-ni two weeks ago. (“Tow-trucker infist fight”, DistrictMail, 5 February2015).

The accident that provoked thedrama occurred when a Toyota Con-quest bumped into a Mercedes on thecorner of Bizweni and SchapenbergRoads at 07:45 on Tuesday 3 Februa-ry.

The owner of En Route Towing, Ja-co Truter, admitted to DistrictMaillast week that he had indeed hit thedriver of the Mercedes. “I simplywanted to calm him down,” he said, explaining that he had restrainedthe driver after he punched one ofhis drivers.

The driver then allegedly punchedTruter in the face, which is whenTruter admits he hit him on thechest.

A passenger in the Toyota Con-quest has now come forward to saythat the tow-truckers had merelycome to their aid as the driver of theMercedes was “being aggressive” to-wards them. “He shouted at my dad,‘Do you know how old my car is?’ sherecalls.

The driver and his wife also hurledracial insults, the woman claims.

She says the tow-truckers askedthe driver a few times to calmdown and “speak “decently”. Shesays he, however, continued toverbally attack them.

“I believe that he would haveassaulted my dad if the tow truckdrivers had not intervened.”

When theDistrictMail contact-ed the driver of the Mercedes onWednesday, he said he had suf-fered severe concussion and wasbooked off until the last week ofFebruary.

He denied that he and his wifehad hit the tow truck drivers andthat they had made racial com-ments towards the occupants ofthe Toyota Conquest.

Sgt Suzan Jantjies, policespokesperson, says the men werewarned to appear in court today.

HUGESPURT INPOPULATIONGROWTH

It’s official: SomersetWestis no longeravillageDALEEN FOUCHÉ

TheHelderberghada42%increaseinpop-ulation between 2001 and 2011, growingfrom 154 216 to 218 503 residents in thespace of ten years.

In comparison, Cape Town as a whole, in-clusive of theHelderberg, had a 25% increasein population in this same period. This is according to information from the

CityofCapeTown, drawnfromGlobal InsightRegional eXplorer. The rapid growth in population is one of

the twomain factorsdriving theextensivede-velopment currently under way in the Hel-derberg.The other main factor is the availability of

large swathes of developable land.LastweektheDistrictMailpublishedacom-

prehensiveguide toall thedevelopments thatwill take place this year, from developmentson the old AECI site through to the R4 billionSitari Fields development, and numerousother residential and commercial develop-ments.This week Stuart Pringle, chairperson of

Subcouncil 8, highlighted how the City ofCape Town is investing in infrastructure tosupport the development of the Helderberg. He says the Helderberg falls within the

Eastern District of the City of Cape Town, which is acknowledged as a rapid growth ar-ea.SomersetWest, he said, has not been a “vil-

lage” for a very long time.In 1969 there were only about 7 000 people

in Somerset West. He estimates that therearenowbetween 80 000 and 100 000 people liv-ing in Somerset West.

Pringle says themaintenance and upgradeof infrastructure is a top priority for the Cityof Cape Town. This includes sewage and road upgrades.

Transport upgrades are especially impor-tant, he says, adding that various transportprojects in theHelderbergare in theplanningstage. An amount of R1,1 million is on this year’s

budget forthetransformationof theSomersetWest taxi rank into a public transport hubfor bus and taxi services.A tender to create a non-motorised trans-

port system, including cycle lanes andwheel-chair-friendly sidewalks, will be put out forsubmissions next month, while constructionis projected to start in August.Pringle says the city is focusing on getting

thebalancebetweenconservationandurban-isation right. This, he says, is especially important in the

Helderberg, because of its beautiful scenicviews and landscapes that could become aneven bigger driver for economic activitythrough tourism.Another big priority for the City of Cape

Town is to tackle economic and social devel-opment.AccordingtoPringle, themajorityofpeople

moving to the City of Cape Town live in in-formal settlements and backyards.Projects such as the creation of informal

tradingareas inSomersetWestandMacassarand the Nomzamo business hub are address-ing the need for economic development in di-verse communities, Pringle says.

)For a detailed breakdown of all the infra-structure projects driven by the City of CapeTown in the Helderberg, visit www.district-mail.com.

Various road upgrades and infrastructure projects are planned for the current financial year. Here construction workers are busy in Main Road, Strand.

Neighbourhoodwatchesneedmembers,whynot join?

In my opinion, there are two main reasons whythe Helderberg needs more members to join theneighbourhood watches:

. The rapid growth in population during thepast ten years to just under amillion people; and

. The need to establish and foster a sense ofcommunity among these newcomers.Cape Town is an attractive metropolis, a first-

worldhubof culturewith intellectual life, restau-rantsandscenery,butevenherepeoplearegradu-ally being alienated. It has been impressive though, to see how

quickly leaders in this large urban basin havemanaged to establish an outstanding series of

neighbourhood watches. The participating organisations in this

initiativeare:SecureRiteSecurity,Gordon’sBaySecurity, ADT and TSU Protection Services. These neighbourhoodwatches share crime intel-ligence, information about suspects, safety andsecurity and provide fast, coordinated responsesto emergencies; in the last half-year alone, 25 to47 suspects have been arrested. These organisations dedicated to combating

verhoging in koste sal dra.

voedselpryse vanjaar skerp styg.

There has been a number of reports andenquiries from readers about the largepatches of pinkish water appearing invarious sections of False Bay during thepast week.

These patches of so-called “geelbek” watercan suddenly bloom into a lethal red tide.

Offshore winds blowing across the surfacewater cause upwelling from the depths andwith this cold water these microscopic orga-nisms,whichare responsible for red tide, areblown to the surface and bloom.

Once this dense bloom has occurred, onlya change in wind direction can disperse anddissipate the red tide.

This red tide has now appeared along theWest Coast and has caused crayfish (kreef)to walk out of the water and onto the beachesdue to the lack of oxygen, depleted by the redtide.

Nature conservation officers are having atorrid time, preventing the public from tak-ing these toxic crayfish home.

Local spinnermen are still having fun fish-ing and spinning for leeries alongside theslipway and off Blake’s Beach. Very few elfhave been caught by shore anglers, whetherspinning or using bait.

Small boats and kayaks have boated kob, geelbek, dassies and the odd white stump inDie Poort and off Melk Bay areas.

The Pearly Beach Shore Angling Club held

a successful monthly competition on Satur-day. A total of 22 fish was weighed. Theseincluded 20 kob, one elf and one hottentot.Hannes Smuts won with three kob of (5 kg,6 kg, and 8 kg) followed by Rian Steyn, alsowith three kob (5 kg, 4,5 kg, 3 kg).

Ferdi Joubert was third, with three kob(5 kg, 3 kg, and 6,5 kg); fourth was ChrisBotha, also with three kob (2,5 kg, 3 kg, 5 kg).The kob were caught between Pearly Beachand Rietfontein.

Pieter Brink fished off Macassar Beach onSaturday and Sunday and reported goodcatches of kob of between 4 and 6 kg. He alsoreported that there were some good dassieand belman caught in the area.

Alan du Plessis reported excellent catchesof kob, which he tagged and released, at DieWalle, Struisbaai on Friday.

OnSundayAlanandcrewontheboatTylercouldonly locateandcatch foursmallyellow-fin tuna, fishing 10 miles off the Point.

Alan will now be returning to Struisbaaito fish for marlin. For charters to catch mar-lin, phone 083 453 2808.

An interesting report from EarlFenwick said there ere two largedorados caught by a ski boat 10miles off Cape Point.

There was also yellowtailcaughtonFridayatRobbenIslandduring thedayandgeelbekduringthe late afternoon and at night.

Some excellentcatchesofmack-erel, caught just off the Battery atSimon’s Town have also been re-ported.

If the water remains between19°C and 20°C, these mackerelshould stay in the bay and attractthe larger fish.

Small boats fishing inFalseBayand at Hangklip also filled theirquotas of geelbek.

There were reports of rock andsurf anglers catching geelbek ofup to 8 kg at Betty’s Bay.

BALL GIRLS: A number of Somerset House girls recently had the privilege of being the ball girls for a hockey test match between the SouthAfrican and Belgium women’s teams at Hartleyvale in Observatory. It was a closely contested game which SA won 10. This was a wonderful experience for the girls and they loved every minute, said Mandy McIlroy, sports director at Somerset House. “It was just what they needed to get them into the mood for our Summer Astro League, which takes place against eight local primary schools (Beaumont, SomersetWest, De Hoop, Somerset College, Lochnerhof, Hendrik Louw, Gordon’s Bay and Somerset House) played at Somerset House on Mondayevenings from 16:00 to 20:00. The senior boys are playing in a similar Summer League Indoor Tournament at Somerset College. This is awonderful opportunity for our children in the Helderberg to prepare for the up and coming hockey season,” she said.

Dropped catchescostMacassarthe gameMacassar drew their First Division D matchagainst Brooklyn Telkom at Milnerton onSaturday.

There was no play on day 1 (last Saturday)due to a wet outfield so both captains agreedto a 30-over first innings declaration.

Macassar batted first and were in all sortsof trouble, losing early wickets as Brooklynmade full use of the bowler-friendly pitch.

Macassar scored 73/9 in its 30 overs. Topbatsmen were Q. Bowman (15), J. Fortuin(12) and D. Sebastian (13).

Brooklyn also battled as J. Fortuin tookthe top order apart with figures of 14-7-23.Brooklyn were all out for 70 in 25 overs.

The other bowler among the wickets wascaptain N. Swartland with 8-3-31.

The second innings started with 65 oversleft in the day.

Macassar’s wickets fell quickly and, withthe score on 45/5, it was J. Fortuin (34) andQ. Bowman (42*) who took the score to 133/9in 33 overs. They were well supported by E.le Roux and A. Swartland both with 16 runseach. Captain N. Swartland declared andgave Brooklyn a target of 134 runs to winin 31 overs.

The Brooklyn batsmen went for the totaland in the process lost wickets regularly.Macassar also dropped five catches in theoutfield and with just 10 overs left Brooklynneeded 54 runs to win.

The spin duo of N. Swartland with 3/37and A. Roberts 3/11 brought Macassar backin the game, leaving Brooklyn Telkom withsix runs to win off the last over and still twowickets in hand.

J. Fortuin was given the ball and pickedup a wicket with the second ball of his spell.

Macassar then needed one wicket to winoff the last ball of the day, while BrooklynTelkom required two runs.

Fortuin bowled a brilliant yorker and theBrooklyn batsman got a leg bye as the LBWwas not given, leaving them on 133/9 in 31overs. The game ended in a tie, with thescores level on 133. J. Fortuin was man ofthe game with bowling figures of 25-10-50.

This past weekend was a dismal one for theHelderberg Pirates baseball teams, as theyall failed to beat their opponents on the day.

The first senior side, third on the log, arefacingoffagainstthelogleadersandrunners-up in their next games.

Pirates struggled to beat newly relegatedGrassy Park Crusaders and things were nodifferent when Pirates hosted Crusaders atRadloff Park on Saturday.

Pirates, who seem to have worked on theirfielding, had minimal errors and didn’t fare

badly with the bat, but were just outgunnedby a stronger Crusaders side.

Crusaders brought in five runs within thefirst three frames, while their strong defenceput the game out of reach for Pirates in theearly stages of the game.

Pirates, however, showed their resilienceand fighting spirit up to the final frame andprevented the game from being called on the“mercy” rule, as happened last time the twoteams met – and ended the game 9-2.

The Masters’ side also struggled to beat

their travelling opposition on Saturday, asa strong, experienced Silvertree side beatthem 11-2. The Masters lost their last threegames, buthaveshowntheyareaformidableforce and are expected to get back to winningthe last few games of the season.

The Pirates junior sides all played GrassyPark Crusaders in their various age groupsand fought hard, only narrowly losing theirgames. The u.15s lost 10-17 and the u.12s lost7-9, while the spirited u.10 side came agonis-ingly close, losing 12-13.

All Pirates baseball teams scuppered on Saturday
