Some of the important factors which are responsible for the process of sedimentation in a river basin are

a) The stage of river(the infant, youth, mature or old stage ) b) Lithology and structures of the upstream region or provenance from where

sediments eroded/migrated/travelled. c) Geomorphology and gradient of provenance. d) Anthropogenic activities such as mining, industrialization and mega

engineering projects such as Dam also affects the process of sedimentation.

e) The thickness of the sequence is determined by the depth of the stream channel during flood stage and is related to the size of river itself.

In Surajpur district Rihand and Mahan Rivers are the main river.Rihand river flows in North-South direction, Flowing direction of Mahan river is from North-west to South-east. In its flow direction these rivers and their tributaries such as Rehan, Gobari, Gokhanaai, Janghiya, Banki,Moran, Adharuwa etc. are responsible for the sedimentation in the district. Rihand and Mahan rivers erode out mainely the semiconsolidated sediments (Gondwana) of Surajpur district.

9.Physiography of the district.

Physiographically, the area occupied by crystalline rocks is marked by rugged

and undulating topography with linear low ridges .Gondwana areas are manifested

by highly rugged topography with hills and plateaus.

Surajpur can be subdivided into 3 major physiographic divisions-

1. Hasdo basin

2. Rihand basin

3. Satpura mountains (Changbakhar-Deogarh hills)

The southern part of the district Pramnagar and part of Ramanujnagar are

drained by Gej, Jhink rivers of Hasdo basin.

Rihand basin extends from the north of Hasdo basin upto northern boundary

of district. Rihand/Rend and its tributaries viz. Mahan, Maran, Banki, Gobri,

Jangla Nala drain Surajpur, Pratappur, Odagi and Bhaiyathan tahsils.

Changbakhar-Deogarh hills (Satpuras) extend from Baikuntpur,

Manendragarh, Surajpur, Pratappur tahsils, rougly bifurcates Rihand basin into two

parts.

Geomorphic features of the district can be categorized as follows-

1. Low level structural plateau exists on major part of Odagi tahsil.

2. Northern, southern and central part is pediment/pediplain.

3. Denudational hill and valley/structural hills and valleys are present in

northern side of central pediment/pediplains.

4. Remaining part is occupied by structural plains of gondwana rocks.

11.Geology and Mineral Wealth:

Geological sequence of Surajpur district ranges from Archaean to Recent formations. Granitoids and the metasediments belonging to Chota Nagpur gneissic complex, form the basement to the overlying Gondwana sediments and Deccan traps. Archaeans have limited exposures in northern, southern and eastern parts of the district. Chota Nagpur gneissic complex is exposed in the cental part of the district where as Gondwana super group is dominant in northern and southern parts. Deccan trap basalt is exposed in northern and southern part along with the Gondwana rocks.

Gondwana rocks of northern area comprises of Mahadeva, Panchet, Supra Panchet formation with limited exposures of Talchir, Raniganj and Barakars whereas in the southern part Gondwana rock belong chiefly to Talchir and Barakar group.

The Precambrian metamorphics of Archaean to Proterozoic age comprise granite gneiss, amphibolites, metasediments etc. Pegmatite and quartz veins forms minor intrusive.

The Panchet formation comprises of green to whitish felspathic sandstone, Supra Panchet formation is predominantly made up of quartz arenite with minor shale intercalations. Raniganj formation the Upper coal measures in the area. It consists of Sandstone, shale and carbonaceous shale with coal seams.

Gondwana rocks being the most dominant litho-units represents most important mineral bearing horizon.

Coal is present Gondwana rocks are most important major mineral in the district. SECL is holding 17 nos. of mining leases for coal in the district.

Apart from coal, ordinary stone (road metal, aggregates) are derived from the Archaeans, Chota Nagpur Gneissic Complex and Gondwana rocks (Barakar & Talchir formation)

Rihand and its tributaries viz. Gobri, Ghunghutta, Maran, Mahan yield a good amount of sand/gravels in their respective courses in northern and central part

of Surajpur. In southern part Gej, Jhink, Atem and other streams yield sand deposits.

At present 03 sand mining leases are operational in Rend/Rihand, Ghunghutta and Gobri rivers at Surajpur and Ramanujnagar tahsils.
