In today’s Gospel describing Jesus’ transfiguration, we hear of the disciples’ vision of Jesus, Moses, and Elijah. Peter, perhaps understandably, responds by trying to en-shrine the moment by building tents for them. However, God interrupts and speaks words identical to those spoken at Jesus’ baptism: “This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased.” But here God adds, “listen to him.” Listening to God can take various forms. At some moments, as when we receive new insight or are deeply moved, we want to jump into action. Sometimes this is appropri-ate and necessary. But sometimes God interrupts our eagerness, and calls us to fur-ther reflection or simply to listen in silence.

Didyouknow?Talk about chat room dangers with your teen Online chat rooms are great places for people to connect over shared interests and ideas. But for young children and teenagers who may not be internet-savvy, they’re also a great place for predators to lay ground-work. In a chat room, anyone can be whomever they want — and preda-tors hide behind personas of friends. Talk to your child about online safety rules, such as never agreeing to meet in person and never providing personal and identifying information. Review chats frequently to ensure that your child is engaging in safe conversations. For more tips on chat room safety, request a copy of the VIRTUS® article “Exposing the Dangers of Internet Chat Rooms”
Giving Options to your Parish Gifts from an IRA If you are 70 ½ or older, you can make a tax-free gift directly from your IRA account to the parish. This law allows you to transfer any amount up to $100,000 annually directly to a qualified charitable organization without paying income tax on the distri-bution. The transfer does not generate taxable income or a tax deduction, so you benefit even if you do not itemized your tax deductions. Your gift can satisfy all or part of your required mini-mum distribution. Gifts of Stock Gifts of appreciated assets such as stock are an excellent way for you to make a charitable gift. Stocks may be transferred directly to the Archdiocese for the benefit of parish, school or favorite Catholic ministry. These gifts will not affect your cash flow, and they provide the following tax benefits: • A possible charitable deduction to help you save on taxes • Bypass of federal and state capital gains taxes • Avoidance of the tax on net investment income From a tax perspective, a gift of appreciated assets makes good sense. You can make the capital gains taxes optional, achieve significant tax savings and support our programs. Please contact Brooke Glazer at 213-637-7381 or [email protected].
