I hate bandwagon’ism, but with recent atrocities in Paris, I couldn’t not say something in this Editor’s Letter. I won’t give credence to the perpetrators of the acts, although we all know who they are, but what they cannot be allowed to create is widespread and longterm panic in our major cities, Birmingham included.

They win if we stop doing what we love: shopping, theatre or, generally, just living for fear of attack. Of course, we must always be watchful and vigilant, but we cannot let our lives become smaller and be bullied into submission through terror.

With this in mind, we invite you to enjoy the very best of the season ahead. We’ve got everything to keep your spirits high; from our pick of the arts and theatre world; entertaining in style plus our annual Gift Guide, which has seen us scour the High Streets to bring you a shortlist of the hottest presents that everyone will want in their stockings on the 25th, and so much more...

Our new Paperwork section has also stepped up a gear, as the Christmas break is often a time of reflection and, subsequently, many return to their jobs in January determined to improve their role, or seek a new adventure.

Here at dluxe, we’re no different and the tail-end of the year affords us the luxury of taking stock. 2015. It has been an incredible year. We’ve (finally) put the recession era behind us and have come out fitter and leaner than ever before. Sure, we’ve never worked harder, but we’ve sharpened up our focus and feel the magazine has never looked or read better.

If you haven’t yet taken the time to find us online, or like us on social media, that’s definitely worth adding to your resolution list, as we always have exclusive content on those platforms that you’ll never read in the paper magazine. It’s all part of our plan to bring you what you love, when you want it and in a format that suits you, plus it keeps you one-step ahead of the Joneses. #winwin.

So, without further ado, please let me wish you the very best for the season ahead.

See you in March,

Jonathan FraserGroup Editor In Chief

Or as we Brummies say: Bostin! Why not fly direct from our Balti Triangle to India’s Golden Triangle. Formed by three cities, Delhi, Agra and Jaipur, it’s one of the most popular tourist circuits in the world. Agra is home to the Taj Mahal, probably the most photographed monument on earth - and here it is again. Air India flies non-stop to Delhi and also to Amritsar. From Delhi you can get connecting flights to several other destinations including Mumbai, Goa and Kerala. So whether you’re going to visit relatives, attend a wedding or simply to soak up the sun, one thing’s for sure, you’re on your way to holiday nirvana.

Non-stop from Birmingham to India every day.Now that’s pukka.

MORGAN & GRUHME: a new smell of successThe Morgan Motor Company (world famous for its handcrafted works of iconic British motor cars) and Birmingham-based British fragrance house, Gruhme, have joined forces to release a Morgan branded men’s fragrance befitting the carmaker’s British heritage and prestige.

Whilst Morgan was established in 1909, Gruhme is relatively new having only been created in 2013. However, founders of both companies, born exactly 100 years apart, lived in the town of Malvern, where Morgan is based and both had strong connections to Malvern College. Harry (HG), the founder of Morgan worked closely alongside the College’s engineering department on his first Morgan cars. Over 80 years later, Robert Hallmark, founder of Gruhme, was to spend his teenage years studying engineering at the same department, which has lost none of its former calibre and was to play a pivotal role in inspiring his passion for design and creativity.

Fast-forward to 2015 and these two British independents are collaborating on a modern but tasteful and contemporary male fragrance adding the exclusive Morgan marque with its incredibly long-standing brand heritage and British history.

The Morgan fragrance provides ample amounts of discerning British pedigree with all the fresh notes of a modern, uplifting and extraordinarily wearable male scent. The end result of this fragrance collaboration is simply refined, just like the Morgan cars themselves.

The presentation of the fragrance makes it clear how both brands share an enviable passion for their craft. The design approach is one of an intelligent, thoughtful, creative but personal touch.

These advocates of British finery are seeing the world show increasing appetite for their bespoke craftsmanship and unique styling, refined for the modern era. In the Morgan fragrance you will encounter 21st century presentation and functionality in combination with the taste, sophistication and heritage that garners timeless interest.

The product is aimed at people who have the confidence and resources to adopt a selective and tasteful lifestyle. You have seen these picturesque and iconic Morgan cars grace our roads, now experience a new sensation of Morgan enjoyment with their new British fragrance, courtesy of Gruhme.

The Morgan fragrance will be made available online via the Morgan website at www.morgan-motor.co.uk/shop for £45.00 at 100ml per bottle and at the Morgan shop based at the factory site in Malvern.

Charity AEDdonate are looking to team up with Schools, Local Communities, Parish Councils and Clubs to raise funds to place Defibrillators (AED’s) within them.

At present in the UK just 8.6% of people who have a Cardiac Arrest outside of hospitals are saved in time, this is because there are simply not enough AED’s out there. Other countries such as Holland 21% and Norway 25% are way ahead of us. As cardiac arrest is the UK’s biggest killer AEDdonate is on a mission to increase the UK survival rate.

The charity arranges raffle prizes, local vouchers from local businesses which will generate

income for the campaign, on-line personal challenges that locals can take part in if they want (anything from small runs, parachuting to climbing Mount Kilimanjaro). They also have over 3000 on-line retailers that pay commission if people follow a link on the pubs personalised fundraising web site.

Kevin Turner on behalf of the charity said “it is essential that we place as many AED’s as possible out there, with the help of local communities we can do this. The existing fundraising activities means that people can fundraise by spending as they normally do on a daily basis, from buying your groceries from Asda to getting your hair cut, the campaigns get paid a small percentage and it all goes the specific local campaign, we also support each local campaign by providing a

pack including posters, collection tubs and ideas a campaign manager and loads of support.”

If you want to take part and can see this as a value to your local School, Community or Club, then please call AEDdonate directly on 01785 472224 or you can email Kevin Turner [email protected]

Edgbaston High School for Girls provides a 21st century education based on traditional values. Every girl, aged from 2½ to 18, is valued as an individual within a lively, happy and caring community. Alongside a very positive review, the school recently received an award from The Good Schools Guide for ‘Best Performance by Girls Taking Creative Writing at an English Independent School

(GCE AS Level)’. The awards are based on a detailed analysis of examination results, and are designed to highlight consistently good teaching. The review will be available to read via the school’s website www.edgbastonhigh.co.uk

Edgbaston High School are currently expanding their Preparatory Department with the construction of a reception area, expansion of the current library and a new art room on the first floor. Work is moving on apace and they hope that the new building will be ready for use in March 2016.

At the time of writing, Cinemas across the UK are preparing for the screening of ‘He Named me Malala’, a documentary film of Nobel Peace Prize laureate Malala Yousafzai, who was targeted by Taliban gunmen for speaking out for girls’ education in Pakistan. Malala has attended Edgbaston High since March 2013 after her life-saving treatment at nearby Queen Elizabeth Hospital. She has been integrated into the EHS ethos where girls are valued as an individual and in which they are given full encouragement from an outstandingly united and committed staff. Malala’s A and A*GCSE results in August 2015 are testament to her strength of character and dedication to her studies.

As part of their A Level students’ enrichment and to aid their studies, the school hosted a panel-based discussion forum on ethical issues. The panel attendees included Elizabeth Glinka from BBC News, Shahin Ashraf MBE of the Muslim Women’s Network, Cllr Randal Brew OBE (Con) and Sacha Brooks, DJ at Capital Radio. The panel were asked their opinions about current issues, with a particular focus on British values in the 21st century. The students were very involved in the discussion with many questions and comments taken from the floor.

Parents and their daughters are invited to Edgbaston High School’s Whole School Open Day on Saturday 9 January 2016. To find out more visit www.edgbastonhigh.co.uk

GET A NEW YOU THIS NEW YEAR AT RESORTS WORLD BIRMINGHAM’S SANTAI BY EF MEDISPA

As 2016 beckons, we are already thinking about our Resolutions, and what better way to do it than from the outdoor hot tub at SANTAI BY EF MEDISPA at Resorts World Birmingham?! Yes, we know that it’s winter but we couldn’t resist enjoying some RnR from the second floor terrace.

We’ve been lucky enough to visit the new £150 million development several times during the opening season and we must say, it really is something for the Midlands to be proud of.

With 50 outlet stores, 18 stylish bars and restaurants, an 11-screen cinema, four star hotel with impressive five star rooms and suites, conference centre, and a casino, there really is something for everyone at Resorts World Birmingham.

Now that the doors are open, we couldn’t resist the invite to be some of the first guests through the doors of the fantastic new SANTAI BY EF MEDISPA, which has opened on the second floor of Resorts World Birmingham.

Having heard a lot about what the medispa has to offer and having been down to EF MEDISPA’s London clinics, we knew that this would be something special. Opened at the beginning of November, SANTAI BY EF MEDISPA offers traditional spa treatments alongside the latest medical advances in rejuvenation and revitalisation therapies. The team from EF MEDISPA, one of London’s top clinic chains has brought its signature award-winning, cutting-edge, results-focused aesthetics to Birmingham and the surrounding areas. This is, without doubt, a one stop medical spa that combines aesthetic treatments with the

latest medical advances and traditional complementary therapies. As they put it: “It’s Personal. It’s Smart. It’s Intelligent Skincare with Holistic Health.”

So it makes sense that we look to SANTAI BY EF MEDISPA as we embark on our annual ‘New Year, New Me’ ritual. We know that this can be an overwhelming thought so, fear not, we have done the research for you and looked deeper into the top treatments that are on offer ready for your year of revitalisation in 2016. It really can help you from top to toe.

Starting from the top, the expert team offers a range of face treatments. If you need to revitalise your skin and remove the signs of 2015, you could opt for a high performance facial, laser treatment or firming microneedling. If youth is what you’re after, they have refreshing facial peels and anti-wrinkle injectables to penetrate your skin from the inside out. If you’re just after a quick makeover, they’ve even got makeup artists on site to get you looking catwalk ready.

When it comes to the body, SANTAI BY EF MEDISPA offers all of the usual treatments you’d find at a spa – male and female waxing, laser hair removal, manicures, pedicures, and body wraps – but their expertise take every treatment to the next level. Living up to its medispa status, the Resorts World Birmingham spa also has a wealth of firming body treatments, slimming treatments, and cellulite treatments that will have you feeling a million dollars.

SLEEPING BEAUTY

26 dluxe-magazine.co.uk

HAVING WON THE HEARTS OF THOUSANDS, AND SMASHING BOX OFFICE RECORDS ACROSS THE UK AND THE USA, THE NATION’S FAVOURITE CHOREOGRAPHER, MATTHEW BOURNE, IS BACK AT BIRMINGHAM’S HIPPODROME THIS FEBRUARY WITH THE STUNNING SLEEPING BEAUTY, A GOTHIC RETELLING OF THE CLASSIC FAIRY TALE WITH MUSIC BY TCHAIKOVSKY. DLUXE BIRMINGHAM TALKS TO CORDELIA BRAITHWAITE WHO PLAYS THE AURORA, SLEEPING BEAUTY HERSELF, AHEAD OF HER APPEARANCE IN THE SHOW, HER FIRST ROLE AS LEAD IN A NEW ADVENTURES PRODUCTION.

Tell us about your upbringing: where did you grow up as a child?I grew up in a really cool village in Stoke Hammond, and we lived in a really, really nice house which had 3 acres. I lived with my two brothers and sister and Mum.

So are you the youngest?I’m the third middle child.

What kind of child were you?I was quite a shy child. I used to watch people a lot, I never really did anything, I just used to sit and watch. I was very imaginative, I used to go off and play in the garden by myself and dance around in the fields and stuff from a young age. I was quite content doing that.

Was dance always something that was a part of you even from a young age?Yeah, I think. I didn’t even know I wanted to dance. My grandma wrote in a diary of mine that I was going to be a dancer and I used to just go off and take myself off into the fields and just dance. I just danced around.

Did you have the opportunity to see a lot of dance as a child? We didn’t have a lot of money, so I rarely went to the theatre. But my mum’s friend used to take us to see the Royal Ballet which was a massive treat for me. So it was very rare, because we couldn’t afford it. But any opportunity that I could get to go to the theatre, I took it, and I used to just love it. I absolutely loved it and I just thought ‘this is exactly what I want to do’. Also I used to dance at festivals and competitions, but I never knew I wanted to dance, I just enjoyed it. I didn’t know where it was going to take me or anything like that.

At what point did you think you could do it as a career?I honestly can’t pin point it. Actually when I was entered for the top six in the all England finals, that was at the Peacock Theatre, and I was nominated as the top six and I danced in the gala and my modern and ballet solo was in front of three judges, I thought maybe actually this is something I want to do. I felt like I wanted to as well which I think is a big thing because people can kind of go a long with it and then actually realise it’s not something they want to do. I think I have always known in the back of my head that I want to dance, but every road I’ve just gone on has just gone a step further and I just thought ‘okay, okay I can do it’ and before I know it I’m here and in the dream job I want to do. It’s all gone so quickly for me.

So this is your first lead role, Aurora really is a big part!I’m so nervous but so excited at the same time, it is a big one and I had set my heart on Sleeping Beauty. I couldn’t be happier.

So how did your adventures start with Matthew Bourne?I’d say it started about a year/ a year and a half ago. This is

my third contract, I went to company classes a lot and my associate director who taught at my college asked me what I wanted to do. I said “I’d like to be Matthew Bourne” and little did I know he worked in the company with him. And he’s been great, he messaged me around the time Swan Lake were auditioning and told me to come to company class and get my face out there. So I just kept going and going, and then I did a summer workshop with them and then the Swan Lake audition arrived and I got it, so I just carried on with them.

I suppose with reality TV like X-Factor and So You Think You Can Dance we’re quite familiar with an audition process, is it as gruelling as they make out on TV?For me, no- that’s TV isn’t it to entertain. I get a lot of people stereotyping asking if they’re nasty or if my feet bleed and I’m just like “no!” But I found the audition so smooth, I mean obviously you’re nervous when you go in because you don’t know what to expect, this was the company I wanted to work for so I had that side of nerves. But when I actually got in there they introduced themselves and just told me to have fun today, and it completely just took that competition away and before I knew it the competition had gone and I just thought it was amazing, it was so much fun. I love dancing, it’s amazing to do, it’s quite liberating.

What will you be bringing to the role that we’ve not seen before?I have to say that I can never pre-empt, I obviously have a few ideas of how I want to play Aurora but for me, as the dancing goes on and the character, it always develops within yourself, so I never have this set character. It is constantly evolving and developing throughout the production so it’s really hard. She’s got this sense of freedom about her, a bit of a wild side but not massively because she’s from a well-to-do family, so there are elements that I have got to keep. But, there’s more that I have to do in myself, like research for how I want to play her, so it’s not set in stone.

The schedule must be quite demanding as a dancer on tour. What is your typical fitness regime? You do have to have a pilate regime that we all do, like before class we’re all in 20 minutes before doing our pilates and getting in contact with which body part we need to focus on. If we had an injury for instance we have a physio on site and she would give us exercises to get that body part strong. So that it is important to maintain that strength because it is a hard, hard run this show.

Do you manage to get any down time? And if you do, do you get to explore any of the cities that you go to?Yeah, we have at least two days off; one of them is travelling to the next venue. You’re in the theatre 24/7 and its dark, and then you get out and it’s dark but it’s so important to keep going out and exploring. So yes we do get some down time but it’s mostly spent sleeping!

So have you got any plans for after the tour? Have you been thinking that far ahead?Ah no! I really can’t see past dancing Aurora. I’m just going to take it as it comes and see how it works for me. I mean, obviously I’d like to work with the company again when they aim to keep working and creating, but I think my main focus is completely on making the best I can be out of this character. I’d love to keep dancing with Matt.

MATTHEW BOURNE’S SLEEPING BEAUTY WILL BE AT BIRMINGHAM HIPPODROME FROM 9TH-13TH FEBRUARY 2016.

If you regularly wear a suit to work then you may think the office Christmas party is a time to dress down and wear what you like. This is not a good idea. The office party, to a certain extent, is just like any other office event except it has more profile. This means that your boss is likely to be there, there’s a good chance that your boss’s boss will be there and there may even be some clients there so it’s still a time where presentation and impressions count.

Don’t wear the same suit that you always wear to work. Instead, wear a suit that you wouldn’t normally wear…as long as it’s not a summer suit in a pale pastel colour. Navy, grey or black suits are best and, together with a crisp white shirt, you will cut a fine sartorial figure. You don’t want to blend into the crowd and by wearing a new suit or a suit your colleagues haven’t seen before; you will still make a good impact.

Here are some other quick tips for suiting up for the office Christmas party:

Ties tend to be optional at Christmas parties but if you’re unsure, take one with you. You can always slip it on at the last moment if everybody else is wearing one.

Fight the temptation to wear a Christmas-themed tie or waistcoat. It’s okay to maybe have some tasteful festive cuff-links or tie clip but when it comes to being festive, subtlety is the key.

Accessorizing with a pocket square and a nice watch will give a classic finishing touch to your suit.

A lot of Christmas office parties start shortly after the working day so there’s not a lot of time to get ready. Plan your attire in advance so that you can immediately change and be ready for the event.

Another good reason for men getting suited up for the office Christmas party is showing some respect to your female colleagues. There’s a good chance that they will want to wear something more elegant and sparkly than their normal office attire and if you’re there in your jeans and shirt, they will be made to look and feel a bit awkward. Your female colleagues will prefer it if you’ve made an effort so getting suited up is just plain old-fashioned good manners!

INTERIOR INSPRIRATION

K E E P I T H O T I N T H E K I T C H e N i n 2 0 1 6Looking at ways to keep things spicy in the kitchen? Well The Station Ltd might just have the answer. An interior design company based in Ashby De La Zouch, The Station has recently moved their showrooms into a stunning Victorian railway station (hence the name) and are going from strength to strength. Recently exhibiting at Grand Designs in Birmingham and tipped as a ‘Hot Kitchen Supplier To Watch’ by the event itself thanks to the quality work and focused design services we caught up with them to find out their hot trends for kitchens in 2016.

1. OPEN PLAN. For the social butterflies of the world, an open plan kitchen is ideal. It centralizes the kitchen and gives you the space to entertain guests while you’re cooking. From breakfast bars to islands, an open floor plan gives you the flexibility in terms of space and means you won’t miss out on any part of the night.

2. HIGH GLOSS. A super glossy, futuristic lacquer will look striking against a dark or neutral palette. From cherry reds to limes, pure whites to deep berry tones, the sky is your limit when it comes to choice, just make sure to keep on top of the cleaning to avoid messy fingerprints.

3. CONTEMPORARY COUNTRY. Less twee than previous years, the new country kitchen is a modern day feast for any vintage or traditional kitchen lovers. Pair soft pastels like duck egg blue, mints or pale

lemons with darker, richer woods like mahogany or walnut for a contemporary contrast.

4. BRUSHED STEEL. Still very much sought after, metallic kitchens aren’t running out of steam any time soon. To bring this trend up to date, opt for brushed steel as opposed to the shinier versions of late. Offset the shine with a matte or block dark colour to really show off the finish.

5. SUPER STORAGE. Utilising the space in your kitchen is something that many people

struggle with, but next season there will be many appliances and kitchens that are built with space in mind. From drawers opening at the touch, to hidden cupboards, multi use appliances and more, cramming everything into three tiny cupboards is a thing of the past!

If you’re in need of some kitchen inspiration, you can visit their showroom at The Station Ltd, Station Road, Ashby De La Zouch, Leicestershire LE65 2GP. Tel. 01530 412380

O U R F R I E N D S E L E C T R I Cdluxe motorsCAN YOU RUN AN ELECTRIC CAR AS YOUR DAILY DRIVER? WE’RE ALREADY FAMILIAR WITH THE CONCEPT OF HYBRID CARS BUT ADVANCEMENTS IN TECHNOLOGY ALONG WITH AN INCREASE IN ELECTRIC CHARGING STATIONS ACROSS THE UK AND GOVERNMENT SUBSIDIES, MEANS THAT MANY PEOPLE ARE FINDING THE PROSPECT OF A PLUG IN CAR TO BE A PRACTICAL ONE.

WE LOOK AT SOME OF THE BEST ALL ELECTRIC CARS CURRENTLY ON THE UK MARKET.

TESLA MODEL S

Tesla’s Model S is a game changer in electric cars. As big as an Audi A8, the Tesla is as fast as a Porsche and as well-appointed as a Mercedes whilst still being eco-friendly: drivers can enjoy a staggering 330 mile range between charges for its £63,200 purchase price.

Tesla’s advanced electric powertrain delivers exhilarating performance and unlike a conventional internal combustion engine with hundreds of moving parts, the electric motor has only one moving piece: the rotor. As a result, Model S acceleration is instantaneous, silent and smooth. Step on the accelerator and in as little as 2.8 seconds the Model S is travelling at 60 miles per hour, without hesitation, and without a drop of petrol.

The Tesla is packed full of gadgets, all operated from its 17” touchscreen centre console- it really is like being in the car of the future with door handles which retract into the bodywork when not in use and a full Autopilot driving system which combines a forward looking camera, radar, and 360 degree sonar sensors with real time traffic updates to automatically drive on the open road and in dense, stop start traffic. Changing lanes becomes as simple as a tap of the turn signal. When you arrive at your destination, the Model S will even detect a parking spot and automatically park itself.

RENAULT ZOE

Renault have four all electric models in their arsenal with the Zoe offering the most realistic solution to everyday driving needs thanks to a zero emissions powertrain, well equipped interior, good performance and reasonable price. Users can expect a range of around 100 miles from the electric motor which offers a maximum of 87bhp in normal driving mode and rapid performance- expect to get to 30mph in just 4 seconds.

The little Renault looks like a proper, stylish city car and drives like one too. It also costs little more than an equivalent diesel Clio at £13,445 making it a great second car or school run option.

The car has zero emissions, but if you take into account the carbon dioxide produced by making the electricity in the first place, the ZOE’s CO2 rating is around 54g/km.

BMW i3

A tight turning circle and compact size makes the BMW i3 a whizz in the city. It’s practical too despite its diminutive dimensions; there’s lots of room inside thanks no doubt to its

engine and battery placement in the car’s floorplan.

Power comes from a 168bhp electric motor that powers the i3 to 60mph in just 7.2 seconds and the lithium ion batteries offer a range of between 80

and 125 miles, although you can double this figure by adding an optional motorbike engine to the powertrain that keeps the batteries topped up.

Despite being electric the BMW i3 follows the BMW tradition for being rear wheel drive and benefits from a firm sporty ride. It’s also very much a premium vehicle with an interior as stylish as its exterior and all for

£30,980.

KIA SOUL EV

For just £2.80 a full charge of the Kia Soul Electric Vehicle can take you up to 132 miles- a fraction of the petrol or diesel cost from the equivalent small SUV. For £24,995 the Kia comes loaded with equipment including touchscreen Satellite

Navigation with European Mapping & Traffic Messaging Channel (TMC) and Charging Point Locator, reversing camera system, aircon, DAB

radio, heated seats and the same, full 7 year warranty that comes with all new Kia’s – reassuring when investing in new technology.

On the road it’s refined, comfortable and nippy making it perfect for city use and it’s five door, raised ride height and decent boot space make it a practical proposition.

NISSAN LEAF

The first mass-produced electric car to go on sale in the UK, the Nissan Leaf offers a comfortable ride, lots of equipment and low running costs with an upfront cost that is lower than most; the entry level Visia model is just a little over £15,790 including a £5000 government electric vehicle grant.

To keep costs down, owners lease the Leaf’s batteries at a cost of £70 per month for the duration of their ownership rather than buying them. This means buyers can still enjoy equipment such as sat-nav, a reversing camera, Bluetooth and keyless go within the Leaf’s starting price.

Nissan claims that the Leaf can manage around 124 miles on a single charge making it most suitable for short, city trips rather than blasts up and down the motorway and make a comfortable commuter option.

VW E-UP! & E-GOLF

In spite of the recent revelations around VW’s eco and emission credentials they do offer two all-electric models in their range – the tiny e-up! and the ever popular Golf in e-Golf form.

Neither model is cheap – even with the £5000 government subsidy the e-up! costs a staggering £19,795 and it looks just like a standard Up! with only blue framed VW badges and aero optimised alloy wheels giving the game away; the e-Golf is also subtle in its eco styling and costs £26,325 including the £5000 government grant.

Both cars drive as well as their petrol powered equivalents with the e-up! offering a 93 mile range and the e-Golf a slightly disappointing 80 mile range. A plug in hybrid Golf GTE version is due soon and might offer a better compromise between range, economy and performance.

Being spoilt is something we have gotten used to. From high-end restaurant launches, red carpet celebrity premiers or travelling the world on someone else’s pursestrings - all in the name of journalism - has become second nature to us over the past sixteen years. Don’t think we’re ungrateful; far from it. We recognize that this insight into the life of the gilded generation is a privilege afforded to few and we seize it with relish.

GROSVENOR HOUSE APARTMENTS: A CAPITAL IDEA

Which is exactly what we did when we were invited to take a jaunt to London for the weekend, recently and stay at the Grosvenor House Apartments by Jumeirah Living on Park Lane. Having stayed in numerous high-end hotels over the years, we weren’t - if we’re truthful - expecting a major wow factor. Sure, it had the right address, but how chic could an apartment be? How very wrong we were.

We’d been stung with traffic on a recent weekend visit to the Big Smoke, so we were wise enough to park at Stanmore Station (£2 per 24 hours, fact fans) and jump on the Jubilee Line, which, as luck would have it, takes you directly to Bond Street. It’s less than a ten minute walk from the tube station, or you could Uber it, if you don’t travel lightly. We don’t.

With Park Lane peers including Lamborghini and The Dorchester, Grosvenor House Apartments by Jumeirah Living are unlike any other service we’ve stayed with before. This is a five star, full service apartment offering with its own concierge, bellboy and stunning atrium restaurant. If that’s not enough, it’s in one of the most enviable locations in London and in the ‘thick of it’ in tourism terms.

Before we were shown to our two-bed apartment suite, we were given a tour of two of the four penthouse suites. We fell in love. The kind of love

that only £16,000 per night can bring. Yes, you read that correctly. But what a world to reside in, not least because of the staggering rooftop view of the Capital. They inform me that two of the suites are long-term booked: one by a family and one by a lone businessman, both having lived there for over a half-decade between them. It’s not so much about how the other half, but how the super-super-rich live. It’s no surprise that this is a haven for visiting dignataries, Royalty and rock-stars.

Smitten, we are ushered to our own suite, (pictured above) which boasts more square-footage than my entire house and looks out over the bustle of Park Lane and Hyde Park. This two-bed suite comes with a fully fitted kitchen and enough entertaining space to seat twelve comfortably, should the mood arise. It didn’t but it did strike us that this could be an incredible way to treat yourself, every once in a while, whether for a Big birthday, or just because you can. This two-bedroom apartment suite is a snip at £940 per night, which sounds like a lot of money, but unlike a high-end hotel room, which is essentially just a base, this apartment IS the lcoation of your evening in London. Why would you want to leave? Ever.

Studio suites start from £345 plus VAT, per night. For more information on Grosvenor House Apartments, visit www.jumeirah.com/GHA

TWENTY FIVE PERCENT GROWTH NEXT SUMMER WITH RYANAIR THROUGH BIRMINGHAM

Ryanair has launched its B i r m i n g h a m s u m m e r 2 0 1 6 schedule with 21 routes, including two new flights to Corfu and Vilnius, which

Birmingham Airport has smashed through the ten million passenger mark for the first time in a rolling 12 month period. Recording 10,004,119 passengers between Friday 28th August 2014 and Thursday 27th August 2015, it is the first time the Airport has reached this new height in its 76 year history and represents a 5.1% increase compared to the same period the previous year. The airport has achieved eleven record-breaking months this year and four record days and is just one of seven airports in the UK, and three outside of London, to serve over 10 million passengers a year.

Birmingham Airport’s chief executive, Paul Kehoe, said: “Reaching 10 million passengers within 12 months is a great achievement for everyone connected with the airport. It’s a real milestone which shows that our strategy of giving passengers choice and great customer service is working.

“We’ve celebrated many achievements

this year to get to this point, including announcing or launching eleven new airlines. We have already seen American Airlines, Norwegian, Vueling, Icelandair, VLM, Hainan Airlines and Wizz start services and celebrated the third daily service with Emirates to Dubai. We’re now focused on launching Qatar, Iberia, Blue Air and Czech Airlines next year as well as many more routes to give our customers the choice of destinations they deserve.”

BOOZY SAUSAGE, FENLAND CELERY AND APPLE HOTPOT WITH CIDEROne pot comfort food at its best. This delicious casserole uses a trio of British regional produce; Newmarket sausages, Fenland Celery and Bramley apples. A good slosh of cider along with fresh sage bring this fantastic winter warmer together.

Close the curtains, turn up the heating and settle down to a plate of cosy comfort food- it is Winter after all!

Serves: 4Preparation time: 10 minutes Cooking time: 1hr 15 minutes

YOU’LL NEED: 450g Newmarket sausages (8 sausages)1 tbsp rapeseed oil6 shallots, peeled and diced6 sticks Fenland celery, cut into 10cm lengths2 Bramley apples, peeled and cut into wedges200g tinned tomatoes, chopped300mls dry cider1 tbsp chopped fresh sage leavesSalt and pepper to taste

WHAT TO DO:Pre-heat oven to 180C/350F/Gas 5. In a large cast iron or ovenproof casserole dish, fry the sausages in the oil until they are browned all over. Take them out and set to one side, then add the diced shallots and fry until they have just started to soften.

Add the Fenland celery and fry for a further 5 minutes until the celery has started to soften. Put the sausages back into the casserole dish, along with apples, tinned tomatoes, cider and sage leaves, and season to taste with salt and pepper.

Cover and place the casserole dish into a pre-heated oven and cook for 1 hour.

Serve with steamed, seasonal greens and mashed potatoes or as a one pot meal with crusty bread.

Cook’s tip: Fenland celery is a heritage variety of celery grown in the Cambridgeshire Fens. In 2013, Fenland celery was awarded Protected Geographical Indication (PGI) status and joined the ranks of Parma ham, Champagne and Melton Mowbray Pork Pies. Fenland celery is only grown in small pockets of Cambridgeshire, Suffolk and Norfolk using traditional farming methods. The deep, peaty soils in the Fens work towards giving Fenland celery its nutty-sweet flavour and paler colour. Fenland celery is available from October to December and can be found in Waitrose, Marks & Spencer, Tesco and Ocado.

A PLAYFUL NEW LOOK FOR PURNELL’SChef Glynn Purnell has opened the doors to an all new look Purnell’s, his Michelin-starred restaurant in Birmingham’s Colmore Business District.

Designed by Richard Wilkinson and John Beven, the co-founders and directors of Birmingham based Wilkinson Beven Design. Visually, the new design still maintains a sense of chef Glynn’s urban and industrial Birmingham background whilst embracing a palette of warm tones creating a more lavish finish to the restaurant to match the sophistication of the cuisine. A newly installed slot window now allows diners to view the action and excitement of the kitchen and see Glynn and his team at work.

Guests can now enjoy an aperitif on the high-backed armchairs or plush red sofa, creating a cosy ‘living-room’ feel to contrast with the concrete design wallpaper that now covers the back wall. A new grand, panelled mahogany door leads to the main restaurant space. Diners walk through an intimate wine storage passage with bespoke oak wine racks, and a rustic collection of jam-jar lights that mirror the recollection of childhood in Glynn’s food.

Purnell’s is still a playful space however with guests transported from city to countryside on the way to the loo thanks to a dramatic ceramic wall tile, adorned with plants and flowers and a changing soundtrack of rural sound effects.

D E C A D E N T D I N I N G A T H A R V E Y N I C H O L SSo for my birthday I thought I should treat myself to a chic and decadent dining experience and the gleaming new Harvey Nichols Restaurant was just the answer. It’s only been open a couple of months at The Mailbox when we visited on a Thursday lunchtime to try the new Autumn menu, curated by Michelin-starred chef, Glynn Purnell.

First we treated ourselves to some cocktails in the gorgeous circular cocktail bar. You enter down a dramatic sweeping staircase and it feels all very A-list, with a distinctly cosmopolitan yet luxurious vibe – think marble surfaces, burnt copper finishes, warm lighting, high ceilings and wooden floors.

The cocktails are pretty special, we kicked off with a reconstructed Daiquiri Blossom made with Havana Club 3-year-old rum, Southeast Asian kalamansi juice and jasmine extract syrup. The visual highlight was a solid sphere of ice in your glass encasing an orange flower and apple blossom. It’s like a gleaming marble taking centre stage in your cocktail glass. I loved it!

Our beautiful smiley waitress took us to our table, set in a large square area overlooked by the open kitchen. With a mixture of tables and booth seating it could seat around 40 people. There’s even an intimate private dining area off to the left that can seat 15.

The new menu for Autumn features dishes such as honey and fennel-glazed duck breast with red cabbage and scorched broccoli; roast scallops, piperade and baby gem lettuce; and braised Wiltshire Downlands lamb shoulder with boulangère potatoes which was fantastic

Classic favourites including grilled lobster with fries and Himalayan pink salt-seared fillet steak; make a welcome return. I tried a perfect portion of native lobster and chips (£20) and hubby had the steak, which was innovatively served on a slab of Himalayan salt rock (£22) I had never seen that before. It kept cooking the meat while it was on your plate. Genuis, even if it was a bit too salty for me!

For our puddings, we chose an old favourite and something new: a warm aromatic pear with glazed rice pudding (£6) and a Crémeux of milk chocolate and smoked caramel, with raspberry and almond crisp (£7) Harvey Nichols oozes a sumptuous decadence that you should put on your must visit list this Christmas.

There’s no rest for the wicked as straight off the back of Marco Pierre White’s recent book signing at The Cube, the celebrity chef has announced another ‘Marco’s’ restaurant in the city.

The MPW brand c o n t i n u e s i t s expansion into the West Midlands with the announcement of Mr White’s English Chophouse, which will open at the Hotel La Tour in November under a franchise agreement (which unfortunately means goodbye to the existing Aalto restaurant).

The celebrity chef has been closely involved with developing the restaurant in the city centre’s Eastside, bringing the traditional concept of a British chophouse to contemporary diners.

The menu as you would expect is meaty - including the Butcher’s Block featuring four cuts of steak, as well as traditional home-grown classics including Welsh rarebit, grilled oysters, chicken and leek pie, smoked trout tartar, lamb chops and Windsor ham with fried duck eggs.

I am sure many of us are not familiar with what an English Chophouse is, so I will be eager to check it out!

Geisha is a sexy new cocktail club for the city. Forget sushi and sake, this bar has a fantastic cocktail menu created by Michael White from Liverpool who’s as skillful as a Samurai when its come to cocktail creations.

He has been working like a ninja creating a list of fashionable cocktails reflecting the Japanese theme with fab sounded names like Onitsuka Dragon, Passoa Kwaih fah and The Koko Kanu Nest .

The super stylish interior has a strong Japanese aesthetic in black and red, with a giant tree taking centre stage at the bar to give it that wow factor. The owners say it will be striking, sexy and seductive, so I’m imagining a Geisha girl’s tea house!

At the weekends, there will be more of a club vibe with the venue opening up its dance floor for you to get your Geisha groove on.

Festive high tea, high fashion and high spirits were in order at the Hyatt Regency Birmingham as the region’s style lovers were treated to an evening of delicious high tea and fashion, all in aid of LoveBrum.

The fashion show consisted of the latest winter looks, modelled by ‘real women’ from the Midlands. Elizabeth Martin, director of events for Hyatt Regency Hotel, said “It was wonderful to see women of all ages and all sizes coming together to share their passion for fashion. Once again we’d like to thank all of our partners who contributed to making the event such a huge success.

“We’re delighted to have raised money for our charity partner. We feel really passionate about the support LoveBrum gives to the city.”

The event raised £600 through an impressive raffle draw, which will go towards the

hotel’s recently chosen charity partner.

LoveBrum’s Co-Founder and CEO, PJ Ellis said: “Our partnership with the Hyatt is brilliant news. When we started the LoveBrum project we could only hope that such established brands would support us, and we are over the moon that they now are.

I would like to thank Elizabeth, Natalie, Joanne, Mario, and all of their team for their support so far; being chosen as their charity of the year, ahead of other very worthwhile organisations is a massive privilege and we will work hard to make sure that the next 12 months really benefits all involved.”

The diverse menu offers diners the ultimate in Cantonese cuisine, using traditional techniques with a contemporary flair. Executive Chef, Ricky Wu, is renowned for his signature dishes, all made using locally sourced produce wherever possible.

Also on offer is a carefully selected wine list, including the prestigious Laurent Perrier champagne; a perfect accompaniment to the high quality ingredients used in their food. The luxurious drinks brand wanted to increase their presence in Birmingham, particularly in the Chinese and Asian markets. Upon learning about owner Parm Rai’s extensive work on Henry Wong, they were keen to work with them. Needless to say they now have an excellent working relationship and Laurent Perrier are happy to support the restaurant in their marketing and networking endeavours. One such event was their Laurent Perrier dinner last month.

Thirteen carefully selected diners from some of the most prestigious businesses in Birmingham were treated to a night of delicious dishes such as Cantonese Roast Char Siu Pork, Honey Pepper Chicken, Lemon Sole, Chilli & Pepper and much more, all paired by an accompanying Laurent Perrier drink. On hand was a representative from the luxury champagne brand to talk guests through each one and why Laurent Perrier is the perfect drink for every course and occasion.

The night was a resounding success and sets Henry Wong apart from other restaurants in Harborne when it comes to hosting dining events.

Beginning with Shakespeare’s text, the powerful and unsettling choreography weaves its way throughout the story, culminating in an unforgettable final act where words falter and finally give way.

The Sisterhood@ The Belgrade Theatre30 January - 20 February www.belgrade.co.uk

Henriette just wants to marry the man she loves. Is that too much to ask? It certainly is for her intellectual mother, aunt and sister – the “learned ladies”- who can’t bear to see Henriette throw her life away. They have a different man in mind for her; a self-proclaimed genius of poetry and the arts. Relocated in time from the 17th century to France during the late 1980s, The Sisterhood is acclaimed playwright and translator, Ranjit Bolt’s brilliantly funny adaptation of Molière’s classic satire, Les Femmes Savantes. This fast-paced comedy is the perfect antidote to the post-Christmas, winter blues.

Land Of Our Fathers @ MAC Birmingham2nd- 3rd Februarywww.macbirmingham.co.uk3 May 1979, South Wales. Thatcher is counting her votes, Sid Vicious is spinning in his grave and six Welsh miners are trapped down a coal mine. As the men await their rescue, secrets emerge and accusations fly. Within two weeks, everything they believe in and everything they know will have changed. Winner of Time Out’s Critic’s Choice and Fringe Show of the Year 2013, Chris Urch’s critically acclaimed debut play is packed full of blistering comedy and echoes a generation of lost voices.

Of Mice And Men@ The HOUSE at The REP4th - 13th February 2016www.birmingham-rep.co.ukSet in America during the Great Depression, this classic

play tells the story of George and Lennie, two migrant farm workers, who go in search of new beginnings, in the hope of attaining their shared dream: of putting together enough money to buy a small piece of land and building a home. After a long and exhausting journey, the pair arrive at a farm in California where they seek work. But they are no strangers to trouble and soon find themselves reeling from the fall out of an innocent misunderstanding which spirals out of control and leaves the two men, bound together by friendship, facing an earth-shattering climax.

Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde@ The Crescent Theatre6th- 13th February www.crescent-theatre.co.uk

Set in the foggy atmosphere of Victorian London, this chilling adaptation of Robert Louis Stevenson’s timeless novel cleverly explores the darker side that lurks within us all. The classic tale relates how Dr Jekyll, fascinated by the duality in his own nature, discovers a drug which isolates the evil side of his character and creates a corrupt alter-ego he calls Mr Hyde. Gradually Hyde gains control as the drug loses its power of restoration. The psychological conflict between good and evil is played out before our eyes - but the fight is not black and white, for as Jekyll is the brake on Hyde’s extremities of vice, so is Hyde the check on the excesses of Jekyll’s virtue.

paperworkDLUXE PLEASURE MEETS BUSINESS IN THE SECOND CITY

I binge-watch. I admit it, writes Dluxe Business Editor Bart Dalton, and when I heard on the radio this week that Collins had identified this term as the 2015 word of the year, I knew instantly that I had contributed to this development. I have recently wasted many, many hours of my life watching Walking Dead. In the beginning I thought it was going to be a horror or scare film but, as the series has gone on, I started to see

a lot more similarities to real life, especially the correlation with the year we’ve just experienced, what with the huge amount of ups and downs and even larger amount of waiting for things to happen. Whether it has been Greece leaving the Euro zone, the Bank of England raising rates or which box set I should focus on next, it has been a fun but challenging year.

But what does my crazy obsession with zombies have to do with dealing with wealth? Follow along with me here. Like most wealthy families, even those caught up in a zombie apocalypse, everything starts out in a fervour filled with running, fighting and trying to survive. As the family grows more accustomed to their wealth, and in the series less worried about being chased down by the living dead and more worried about how they’re going to stay alive, they become comfortable with their surroundings and they do three things:

Number one is when they sit down and take inventory. I like to call this the wealth map, a snapshot of all the assets, family members and other interests that the family share and how they all interact. Things like this need to be in writing and can take time for everybody to compile. If you are a wealthy family this might be businesses, portfolios, properties, car collections, art and so on. If you are a family fighting the zombie apocalypse this might be a place to sleep, weapons, food supply and probably people to avoid.

The second thing is to create a family doctrine or family rules that gets rid of the assumption that everybody understands exactly how you are supposed to act and solidifies it by writing it down and sharing it. The best way to make sure that the family understands and buys in to this is to host a family summit where

the wealth map can be presented and the family rules or the family doctrine can be presented and agreed to. Some of the rules could be as simple as be a contributing member in society, not tarnish the family name, be responsible with the family’s assets and participating in family functions, including but not limited to the family summits, which should happen at least once every two years. On the other side if your family is fighting a zombie apocalypse then your family doctrine might include do not eat somebody else’s canned food, don’t stab a family member -unless it turned into a zombie of course and if society ever gathers itself up again, don’t be a bad person.

The last thing, that works more in current times than in the zombie apocalypse, is creating a family investment company. This is a tool used to make sure that families of wealth carry on in perpetuity. Family investment companies normally pull the assets and liabilities of families to create a great succession plan. Previously things like family offices and ultrahigh net worth private banking seemed unreachable by many individuals. This is now not truly the case and with the right guidance there are many tax, income and succession benefits that can arise if done properly. It’s at this stage that our zombie survivors should be planting up a vegetable garden and guarding the family goat.

Although this article is a bit tongue-in-cheek, with references to the zombie apocalypse and how that relates to wealthy families, the truth of the matter is without the right motivation or stimulus many families maintain what they have or decline between the generations, but if you don’t have the motivation of being chased and surviving day-to-day and you want to make sure that everything you worked hard for and built isn’t just for you, but for your family for generations to come, there are just some things you need to set aside time for. Figure out where you are now by creating a wealth map. Get written rules in place on family behaviour and I emphasise the fact that they need to be written. Lastly, if your wealth is significant enough then consider creating a family investment company; it may be an answer to make sure your wealth has longevity.

Make the next year a good one by implementing one of the above and make it an amazing one by implementing all three. Most of all don’t let your family wealth meander aimlessly like the living dead.

A new concept in stress busting treatments has been launched by ndependent day spa, At One, aimed at Birmingham’s business community. The new City Express and Savvy Beauty menus are aimed at busy city workers with limited available time.

“We know from experience that our clients who work in Colmore Business District need to look good and be on top of their game, but they don’t have a great deal of free time during the working week,” said Managing Director, Beth Davies.

“Many of our clients come in either with aches and pains related to hours of computer work, or in need of a quick beauty fix. For them, lovely as it sounds, spending 60 minutes on a couch being pampered isn’t a viable option. Our express treatments offer short but effective solutions to their problems.”

The City Express menu is available at The Great Western Arcade based day spa and includes a range of massages taking as little as 10 minutes, including seated deep tissue acupressure massage, headache-relief massage, and hand and arm massages. The Savvy Beauty menu covers aesthetic treatments including 25-minute gel manicures, 20-minute Dermalogica facials and 20-minute CACI non-surgical facelifts.

BID BUSINESSES BENEFIT FROM CRIME FIGHTING TEC

A revolutionary, hi-tech system to help businesses report crime has been extended by Birmingham Community Safety Partnership with the support of a range of partners to help businesses reduce crime and report incidents on-line.

Eleven of the city’s Business Improvement Districts (BIDs) are set to receive the system which will then be made accessible to businesses within the individual BID areas. Three Business Improvement Districts are already signed up to the scheme, and more are expected to come on board over the next few months.

Businesses can use Facewatch, an instant crime reporting tool, which allows them to capture security related incidents and accompanying CCTV imagery in and around their premises; analyse the data in order to target harden their premises against crime; share watch lists with other businesses; and report incidents and statements to the Police as ‘digital evidence packages’.

Crime reports submitted via Facewatch are instantly sent to a police contact centre and passed to investigators; officers can then access full details of the crime from their desktop while automatic update emails are sent to the victim.

West Midlands Police has for the last two years already been using another Facewatch Application, FacewatchID. This free app allows the general public to submit information anonymously on suspected criminals in their area. This has led to more than 100 people been arrested, having been identified by eagle-eyed members of the public.

The use of both the online reporting system and the mobile app is completely free to the force. For more information visit www.facewatchid.co.uk

PROFILE: Yipsy macaronsAngela Yip is the founder of Yipsy Macarons, the business she runs from her Sutton Coldfield home. Angela, 34, has had no external investment and continually reinvests profit back into her business. Due to her success and recent growth Angela is planning to move operations from her kitchen at home to commercial premises

How did you get started?I wasn’t enjoying my job in finance and was looking to start my own business. I kind of fell into macarons when I tried some from Laduree in London, I became obsessed with them and spent months perfecting making them, baking until the early hours after getting home from my day job. I was working 60/70 hours a week as a finance controller and my friends and family were saying my macarons were the best they had tasted. Eventually, I decided to take the plunge and set up Yipsy Macarons.

What was the gap in the market? The fact that macarons are gluten-free was a big factor for me, as I’m gluten intolerant. They are also less than 100 calories and I know lots of people who are looking for a guilt-free treat. I was also drawn to their size and versatility – I make macarons of all shapes, sizes, flavours and colours. They can be tailored

for corporate events and personalised for special occasions such as weddings, baby showers and christenings. We’ve just launched our new Christmas Gift selection which is proving to be very popular for personal and corporate gifts already.

What were the challenges in starting the business?I’m a bit of a perfectionist, so getting the macarons to my exacting standards was the first challenge, but one of the things that surprised me most in the beginning was the physical exhaustion and strength required to do the job. Having been previously desk based to then be on my feet moving around all day was a big change, and I had real problems with my back. I have since taken up yoga and go to the gym regularly, I’m now the fittest I’ve ever been.

What has been your biggest business success so far?My biggest success so far has been having orders from large, high end, luxury companies such as Apple, Malmaison, Pandora, Swarovski and HP without any active promotion. They have all come to me purely from word of mouth and positive recommendations, which is fantastic.

What advice would you give to other would-be entrepreneurs? It is important to keep fit and healthy in the mind and body. Ignore the whispering monkey of doubt in your mind and never sell yourself short.

This means that getting the process right is more important than ever. A jump in complexity amongst typical families – with second and third marriages now commonplace – is increasing the number of potential beneficiaries to individual estates. With a general rise in the value of estates – as well as a greater reliance on expected inheritance by individuals, this is increasing the likelihood of bequests being challenged. If expectations are not met, this can naturally increase aggravation.

STARTING YOUNGIt is important to start thinking about your legacy at an early age instead of waiting for wealth to accumulate: after all, the process is less about wealth protection than it is about looking after the interests (in the broadest sense) of your children, guardians or loved ones. It is important not to forget that wills don’t just deal with your wealth – for example, wills can also set out who you would want to look after any children in the event of your death.

Getting the will-writing process started at a young age is therefore advisable – naturally, a will needs to be reviewed and updated on an ongoing basis but by getting a framework in place for passing on assets and capital, the process becomes much easier to manage. Waiting until middle age to start the process from scratch can make it more complicated in terms of splitting funds and assets that by this time may cover multiple sources.

COVERING EVERY BASE Preparing a will is not a straightforward process, so it is important not to let it overwhelm you. For those wills that are more complex and contain multiple assets, ensuring that the chance of a dispute is reduced means that turning to a professional adviser can help. Of course, this also reduces the stress involved in drawing up the document and means that key checkpoints – for example, ensuring that a will is properly executed and understanding the tax that would be payable upon death – is done precisely. DIY or handmade wills have become more popular in recent years but without a level of professional input, the risk of error increases and could cost a great deal more in the long-run – in emotional, as well as financial terms.

Making a will that has not been unfairly influenced by those likely to benefit from it is also very important. Coercion is a serious issue and one that could invalidate the terms of a will if shown to be true. It is also important to ensure that the person making the will has mental capacity to do so. If there is any doubt, then the best route is to allow a legal professional to organise for an assessment by a certified doctor.

FEELING CHARITABLE? People often like to make charitable bequests in their wills. Whilst the majority of gifts are unchallenged, some gifts can be the subject of attacks. For that reason, it is important to provide proof such as a letter from the individual explaining their choice of charity or evidence of historic donating. Illustrating this is the recent case of the will of Melita Jackson, who left her entire estate to charity. Ms Jackson’s estranged daughter was actually able to overturn the charitable bequest, partly because there was no such evidence of a longstanding relationship between her mother and the charity.

While such cases are rare, this acts as a reminder for people to document links to any charities whom they might want to benefit upon their death, as an extra safeguard.

RULES OF ENGAGEMENT Of course, it can be easy to forget that there are clearly defined inheritance rules for people who do not make a will. Married spouses are automatically entitled to a share of their deceased partner’s estate where cohabitees have no immediate rights. Younger couples especially should remember these rules of thumb and make appropriate provisions within a will - rather than assuming that partners will automatically inherit.

REDUCING THE RISK OF DISPUTESIt sounds simple and does not apply in every case, but where possible, sitting down with family members and other beneficiaries to inform them of your intentions can help avoid misinterpretation and misunderstanding further down the line. Often disputes arise when a will contains something unexpected or potential beneficiaries are caught off guard so in some cases, communicating your wishes before the time comes can mitigate against this.

We are also seeing more individuals moving overseas on a permanent or semi-permanent basis resulting in them having property and assets in multiple countries. Here, it is crucial to take proper advice, and usually, it will be sensible to draw up separate wills in each country where assets are held.

DON’T REST ON YOUR LAURELS – REVIEW, REVIEW, REVIEW

While creating a will is vital, it is also important to regularly review and update it where necessary. This needs to happen at least every five years or after a significant life event, for example, the birth of a child.

Naturally, assets and investments can go up or down in value (or be sold), and if this is not mitigated for in a will, your original intentions can be defeated. It is therefore worth thinking about pooling assets and dividing the overall value between beneficiaries in percentage shares.

Ensuring one’s wishes are honoured on death cannot be left to chance. Instead, individuals should start the will writing process at a young age, ensure it is regularly updated to reflect changing asset values and family structures and where possible, make beneficiaries aware of how they will benefit.

Andrew Wilkinson is a will-dispute specialist and partner at the law firm Shakespeare Martineau. www.shma.co.uk

WILLS: How to avoid legacy disputesRECENT HIGH-PROFILE COURT CASES HAVE BROUGHT THE ISSUE OF PREPARING A WILL FIRMLY INTO THE SPOTLIGHT AND DISPUTES BETWEEN THOSE LEFT BEHIND ARE SHARPLY ON THE RISE. AN INCREASE IN SECOND FAMILIES, INCREASED RELIANCE ON INHERITED WEALTH AND A JUMP IN THE VALUE OF MANY ESTATES ARE ALL PLAYING THEIR PART.

PERFECTING YOUR CV: So you’ve made your decision and considered all your options, if you’ve decided to move on then now is the time to whip your CV into shape. It may seem obvious but your CV is your most valuable tool when applying for new jobs and unfortunately for most jobseekers, recent statistics showed that 89% of us don’t know how to put a good one together.

The secret to a successful CV is to keep it simple and limit it to no more than two pages. Here are my top three tips for creating that perfect CV:

1. Tailor it to the opportunity you’re applying for.

2. Use your Personal Statement to bring it to life and showcase your personality. Don’t be tempted to fill this with business buzz words such as ‘motivated’ or ‘driven’ that actually have very little substance.

3. Finally and most importantly make sure you proof read everything at least twice!

Visit www.simkissguy.com for a full breakdown on what a good CV should include.

PREPARING FOR YOUR INTERVIEW:Preparing for that all important interview is undoubtedly one of the scariest things about applying for a new job, but if you’ve done your homework then it doesn’t need to be. Make sure you’ve fully researched not only the company but also your job role, interviewer and their competitors before you attend. It shows you’re serious about the job and understand exactly what they’re looking for. Having some questions about the role and company are also great to have on-hand.

Finally, take some pressure off yourself on the big day by ensuring you’ve double checked the date, time and place of your interview in advance. Also planning your journey and interview attire will eliminate any last minute stresses allowing you to focus on what counts, the interview itself.

HANDING IN YOUR NOTICE:So you’ve made the decision and got the dream job but you’ve still got one final hurdle left to navigate; the delicate balance of handing in your resignation whilst likely wanting to keep on good terms with your current employer.

Whatever your reasons for leaving, your former boss and co-workers are a crucial part of your network and reputation so it’s definitely worth keeping them onside. Firstly, although you may already be thinking about your exciting new career don’t forget that you haven’t left yet. It’s important that you don’t ‘disappear’ during your final weeks and believe me your boss will remember if you do! Finally, however tempting it is to be honest during your exit interview make sure you’re constructive and don’t express any negative opinions that you may later regret.

WILL YOU BE CELEBRATING A NEW YEAR AND NEW CAREER THIS JANUARY?

After the excitement of Christmas has died down and the drive of New Year’s resolutions begin to take hold, it’s no surprise that many people find themselves assessing their career options in January. Recent findings from professional network LinkedIn, suggest that Wednesday 21st January is the busiest day in the year for career development.

Rebecca Simkiss, Co-Founder and Joint Managing Director of Birmingham-based SimkissGuy Recruitment agrees, pointing out that “the festive break allows people to reflect on their decisions and often return to work ready for a change.”

So what should you do if you find yourself mulling over more than mulled wine this Christmas? We sit down with Rebecca to hear her advice if you’re considering a new career this New Year.

CONSIDER YOUR OPTIONS – ARE YOU READY TO GO OR SIMPLY UNFULFILLED?We all have times when we get frustrated with our jobs but it’s very easy to assume moving on is the only option. Stop and think first – can things be improved or is it simply time to consider a new opportunity?

SHOULD YOU STAY?Use the Christmas break to evaluate your current role and see if setting yourself some work-related resolutions can turn things around.

• Firstly, try to understand what is really causing you frustration in your job? Are you no longer feeling challenged or are there other factors that might be influencing your feelings? • Could you be more proactive? Not invited to those big planning meetings? Express an interest in the development of the company and don’t be afraid to ask for updates. • What would you like to achieve this year? Discuss your thoughts with your line-manager. What support is available internally to help you to achieve your goals?

TIME TO MOVE ON? Sometimes however the time is right to simply move on and January is definitely a strong hiring period. Think only employees make career resolutions? Wrong. Businesses do too and often enthusiastic new employees fit perfectly into their renewed focus on new plans and projects. If you’re not sure whether it’s time for a new challenge ask yourself whether these three things sounds like you:

• Sunday night blues - Everyone gets the Monday blues from time to time but if you’re constantly dreading going into work, and this starts to impact your weekend, then it may be time to consider other options. • Can’t see a way ahead – You might be very good at your job and have an excellent relationship with your boss but deep down you know there’s no room for advancement. • You procrastinate – If you no longer enjoy the day-to-day activities in your job it might be that you need a new challenge.

However, it’s important that you don’t make rash decisions which you’ll regret later in the year. Instead find five minutes over Christmas to really think through your options and decide exactly what you enjoy doing. Ask yourself if you’re looking for a new job or a whole new career. If it’s the later what is your next step? Are you prepared (mentally and financially) to retrain? Finally, assess what your key skills are and whether these can be transferred.

A new year brings many small business owners the opportunity to reflect on their own performance, both in terms of the business and their own individual achievements and near misses. says Coach and Mentor Jackie Cummins

As a Coach and Mentor I always tell people to focus on what has been achieved, not what you failed to achieve; although this is sometimes much easier said then done! Nevertheless it’s a great starting point and a great measure for taking your business or career to new heights!

In my experience I tend to find that during the Winter months, many professionals start to re-evaluate their employment or business situations and make a concerted effort to make contact with a business or career coach and mentor.

It’s usually not a spur of the moment decision, but one that has been articulated over many months of discontentment and anxiety, which if such a situation is allowed to manifest, then this can cause low self esteem and can affect our confidence to embrace change, new opportunities and improvements for the better.

As we all reflect on what has happened it is very easy to be hard

on ourselves and yet it is a well-known fact that people often overestimate what can be done in a year but underestimate what can be achieved in 5 years. As a result of this disappointment there is a tendency to give up on our goals or dreams but it really doesn’t have to be this way.

We can also beat ourselves up when we look back at an outcome which we didn’t achieve, the results that were anticipated or we perhaps wasted time working on a project which was simply not required or did not fulfil our needs as a business or an individual.

Some of us get so fixated on our goals that we don’t want to change them but throughout the year new information or changes will become apparent and this is likely to impact the business. Your first starting point is to acknowledge that it is absolutely fine to change your goals in light of this new information.

It’s the anticipation that a new year is almost upon us and do we really want to be in the same situation this time next year? Well the answer is most definitely not!

Moving out of a comfort zone or exiting ‘the devil we know’ situation can be a huge decision to make once complacency sets in, so in many cases clients will hang in there way longer than they should have done and end up feeling overwhelmed, burnt out and quite emotional.

But taking that first step to researching a coach and mentor on line or picking up the phone, writing an email and admitting that you really need some guidance, a professional sounding board and a route to finding a way forward is a really big deal for many as they have decided to acknowledge that help is required.

I have often wondered why I receive an influx of new enquiries and new client programmes from the period of November through to March and I have concluded that people want to take stock of their career or business when there is more time spent at home during the colder months, which gives an opportune time for writing down their goals and intentions with a clear objective in mind. The timeline is measured, so that by the time Spring arrives a new career or exciting employment opportunities are now in place.

It is the same for business owners, as there may be a lull with their client pipeline and the balance sheet is starting to look a little lean. November and December is a great time to start creating an improved business strategy and action plan as to holistically look at where the strengths and weaknesses currently lie.

I am currently working with so many new clients, who are not quite sure of the career move they actually want to make, but are certain that their current job role is no longer serving them or bringing employment satisfaction, so they are working on coaching and mentoring programmes with me as to springboard them towards the best possible career choices, based on many things including their own transferrable skillset.

It is the same for business owners, many new clients have recently joined me as to take their business to a much higher level, looking at a growth strategy for the new financial year in April 2016 and putting essential things in place to ensure that their business is working smarter.

COACH YOUR BUSINESS TO A NEW YEAR OF SUCCESS

Employees working in leisure, culture and sport roles take more sick days than any other industry, a new study reveals. Nationally those employed in this field scored highest taking 3.8 days per annum off sick on average with workers in telecoms, marketing and education also featuring high in the sickliest professions.

Teachers take above the national average at 3.17 days per year, while those working in the manufacturing industry or industrial labour take the fewest days off sick a year (1.59). In comparison the average employee in the West Midlands takes just under three sick days per year.

39 per cent of workers in the West Midlands dread having to make the call to their boss to tell them they are sick- with flu, stomach bugs and viruses the leading causes of missing work. Similarly, a third admitted they put on a ‘sick voice’ if ringing in to get a day off work.

MOCK THE WEEK STAR ED BYRNE IS AN ESTABLISHED TOURING FAVOURITE, AND DESPITE HIS YOUTHFUL LOOKS THE IRISHMAN RECENTLY MARKED UP 20 YEARS AS A COMIC. HIS LATEST SHOW OF OBSERVATIONAL COMEDY, ‘OUTSIDE, LOOKING IN’, COVERS A WIDE RANGE OF SUBJECTS – FROM A RECENT GASTRIC ILLNESS TO THE SUCCESS OF UKIP, BUT HE ALSO TALKS A LOT ABOUT HIS FAMILY AND IT’S HIS MOST PERSONAL TOUR YET.

“I didn’t make a conscious effort to write a more personal show, but that was what was coming out when I started writing it,” Ed says. “People come to see me for a laugh and I would like to think they go away thinking the show is quite heartwarming. A lot of comics may talk about the same stuff, but what makes it mine is that what I’m saying is what I genuinely think on this subject, and I try to make it as funny as I can. I think we all mine our lives to some degree or other.”

Ed is adamant that he will keep his two young sons out of the celebrity spotlight, so don’t expect an “At Home With Ed Byrne and Family” in OK! any time soon. But in ‘Outside, Looking In’, he shows a picture of one of his sons - the denouement of a bittersweet story about buying new shoes – which not only illustrates it perfectly, but produces an “Aaaah” moment.

“I’m aware that they haven’t given me permission to talk about them and that there will come a point when I can’t,” Ed says. “John Bishop, for example, has stopped talking about his [much older] children on stage because people know who they are.

“I talk about them in pretty abstract terms, because what I’m discussing is the act of parenting, and you can’t talk about that without mentioning your own children. And there isn’t anything in this show that would make them at a later date say, ‘I don’t like this’.”

But while there is a lot of personal reflection in his new show, Ed also ponders on matters political - the story about his son sparks a passionate section about how we label young children, for instance, and he also talks about feminism and transgenderism.

I ask Ed if dipping a toe into the transgender debate (for which some have been vilified on social media) isn’t a little risky. “It has become such a big subject because of Caitlyn Jenner [the former athlete Bruce Jenner, who transitioned earlier this year] and some Twitter trolls were refusing to acknowledge her as anything but Bruce. I thought it was interesting that it stills divides people. I call it the thorniest issue since Jesus was fitted for a hat.”

The feminist slant to the new show was sparked by Ed’s reflections on his early days in comedy and, strikingly, he admits to being a little uncomfortable about some of his more laddish material back then.

“My comedy reflected my life at that time – single and enjoying myself – and most of it was fairly harmless, ‘the difference between men and women’ kind of thing. But some of the stuff about an ex-girlfriend I can see was a bit angry and I wouldn’t do it now.”

He says he is more aware of how men and women interact in the modern world and is sometimes surprised by the difference in his reactions to things as a man in his forties to when he was twenty

something. “I started watching Californication [the US dark comedy starring David Duchovny as a sex addict] but I found it insulting because I’m expected to empathise with him. His character behaves so unconscionably that I couldn’t watch the second series.

“I don’t how much of that is simply getting older, or that times have changed, or mixing with a broader group of people. Interestingly I find Twitter can expand your horizons; I’ve started following all sorts of people on it and it’s good to get a different take on things.”

I ask Ed, 43, if he still likes touring after two decades. “Apart from the travel involved, which no comic likes, I love it, because you have people responding to something that you have written alone in your office, and the work comes alive in a room of people. I like the television things I do, but nothing can beat a live comedy audience.”

In any spare time he has, Ed is a hill walker; when in Scotland he “bags” Munros (peaks above 3,000ft, he’s at 75) and the completist, slightly geeky side side of him, he admits, means that elsewhere in the British Isles he also collects “county tops” - the highest point in the county. “I’ve downloaded an app for them,” he says with a laugh, “and have started making a list of those I’ve done.”

He’s currently writing a sitcom set in an outdoors shop, and I ask if he plans to introduce his sons to the pleasures of outdoors. “My wife, Claire, and I already have. So far they love it, camping and canoeing, that sort of thing. As they’re growing it’s hard to be apart from them. When I’m on tour, and I try not to be away for more than a couple of days at a time, but one of the great things about my job is that it means I can spend a lot of time with them when I’m home.”

ED BYRNE WILL BE APPEARING AT BIRMINGHAM TOWN HALL ON FRIDAY 19TH FEBRUARY.
