8In class nowParents (and students), what is the largest organ in the body? What function(s) does it serve? The answer is your skin. Yes it is an organ. The skin (hair, & nails) serve as a barrier to prevent infection, keep one warm (think about getting a short hair cut), produces vitamin D, and collects information for the brain to analyze and react (the skin will sense the heat or cold). We will be making the connection between genetics and certain types of skin conditions such as cancer / melanomaThe first type, Basal Cell Carcinoma, the next two are forms of Melanoma (the second one was an extreme case) and finally, hives (caused by an allergic reaction to something)

9The HeartWhat is the purpose of doing CPR (Cardio-Pulmonary Resuscitation) on a person who appears to be having a heart attack? The purpose is to pump fresh oxygenated blood around to all the organs with a special focus on the heart & the brain.
