Canadian Politics & Government

A GUIDE TO REFERENCE SOURCES

This guide introduces reference works available in McGill libraries relevant to the study of Canadian politicsand government. It includes titles on Quebec insofar as they discuss federal-provincial relations. it doesnot include general political science tools, many of which will have a Canadian section, as those are listedin Political Science: a Student's Guide to Reference Resources. Other guides which may be helpfui are:Canadian Bioaraphy, Canadian Economics, Canadian History, Canadian Manuscripts and Archives, NativePeonies of Canada, and Quebec Studies. Although some important sources with an '-istorical approach arementioned, the emphasis here is on material for contemporary politics.

Government Documents

Government documents are an important source for the study of Canadian politics and government and afew of the basic sources are included here. The Government Documents Department is a depository forCanadian and Quebec government publications and has a small representative collection for otherprovinces, as well as a large collection of indexes and bibliographies not mentioned in this guide.Furthermore, the Department has its own card catalogue which contains many items not yet Included inMUSE as well as a collection of very useful guides prepared by the department.

Locations and Holdings

Only one McGill location has been listed for each entry. MUSE should be consulted for other possiblelocations and, in the case of serials, for more detail on title changes and holdings.

A comprehensive work which covers the major topics Ir. Canadian history, culture and politics. It includes over 3500biographical entries. The index is extensive and includes cross-references. All of the articles are written by expertsand many of the longer articles include a short list of suggested readings. A French translation of the 1st editionwas published in 1987 entitled, L'Encyclopedie du Canada (Ref FC132 W2413).

Charter of Rights and Freedoms: a Guide for Canadians. Rev. ed. Ottawa, Minister of Supply and Services, 1987.GovDocs CA1 SY1 1987 C36

McLennan Reference has t le 1982 edition. Both editions outline the Charter with explanations of its clauses but onlythe 1987 edition includes Section 35 of the Constitution Act, 1982, pertaining to rights of aboriginal peoples. Forbibliographies on civil rights see Section VIII.C.

servants. Emphasis this year (1990) Is on the Free Trade Agreement and the failure of the Meech Lake Accord with

comprehensive bibliography on the Accord and a useful chronology of events from July 1989 to June 1990.

Abstracts in English for French essays and in French for English essays. A good complement to Reid, Section VIII.G.

For more detail on the Meech Lake Accord. (See also Hogg, Section I.)

Canadian Annual Review of Politics and Public Affairs. 1971- Toronto.

McLFC2 C35 Latest in Ref

Essays, mostly by academic specialists, provide excellent coverage of major political and public affairs of the year.

Appears with a delay of approximately four years. Two major sections, one on "federal perspective" and one on

"provincial perspective". Brief chronology; obituary section; names and subject indexes. For a good update on

issues relating to federalism see Canada: the State of the Federation (above).

The USA and Canada. 1st ed. 1990. London, Europa Publications, 1989- .

This Europa publication provides directory and statistical information and includes chronologies of both countries.

Informative es: ays on political, social, economic and international issues, including recent issues such as the Free

Socio-economic and cross-tabulated data from the 1986 Canadian census can be searched on compact disc.

Accompanied by a geographic index. Only two variables can be correlated at a time and information can be printed

out in tabular form. Knowledge of statistical packages (SPSS or SAS) is not required. The complete 1986 census

tracts are loaded on the McGill mainframe. Enquire at the McLennan Reference Desk or the Computing Centre

regarding their use.

Published by Statistics Canada, this year book is the basic statistical reference source on Canada. Arranged by

subject, it has up-to-date essay-type articles on economic, social and political developments In Canada and includes

a list of royal commissions. The 1990 edition has a selective list of related publications at the end of each chapter.

The current disc contains about 30% of the 500,000 CANSIM time series produced by Statistics Canada. The basic

statistical data needs to be manipulated by using statistical packages (SPAS or SAS). The Statistics Canada

Catalogue and virtually all printed series are available in the Government Documents Department.

Commission and the Bibliography of Works on Canadian Foreign Relations. Searches to retrieve citations are

formulated on the basis of pertinent keywords, and can be used to search the whole database or limited parts of

the data. This file can also be searched on the slightly more current online database. Ask for help at the Ref. Desk.
