Happy Holidays!

For me Christmas has always been about family. Our tradition was Christmas Eve at my grandparent’s where I was the rst grandchild with 2 aunts and an uncle to spoil me rotten, to now an extended family of 60+ that gather back home on the farm when we can.

My trees are decorated, the “snowbabies universe” is complete and all I need to do is stock the fridge, and of course make room for the perogies being own in from my 97-year-old great Aunt from Saskatchewan.

I am SUPER excited for Christmas this year. For the rst time my brother and his kids are coming to spend it here with us. My niece Ava is “eleven-teen” and Eric is 8. Super fun ages! There will be Mary Poppins, shopping of course, a day in Whistler, nights lled with lights, and of course watching old movies by the replace.

I hope you get an opportunity this holiday season to spend time with those you love. Family, friends and acquaintances.

Eat lots, be merry and most important, take time to be grateful for all that is.

See you all in 2017!Corry Sta, CFP ~ Corry Sta Financial Group / Cocktails & Cash

Every year do you vow to downsize your Christmas decorations? To keep things simple and stress free.

Do you vow to be more organized?

Do you vow to start shopping early, to avoid the rush?

You are not alone.

Know your limit. Some people love the holiday season and wants loads of decorations and have the room for them. Others want it simple.

That is the rst thing you need to do. How many boxes are right for you and your storage capacity?

BOX 1 The contents of this box is all your Christmas cards, wrap, ribbons, gift bags and spare Christmas light bulbs. You might want to keep gifts in here that you’ve picked up on sale in Jan.

Now if you are really downsizing you may have given up the gift giving trend. If you have, you no long need to store gift wrap, ribbons or gift bags. Instead of gifts you might choose to do a memory making outing. For example going to a live play, baking cookies together or going out looking at all the Christmas lights followed by a gourmet dinner out. Many people have also given up the tradition of sending Christmas cards. Instead they take the money saved from buying cards and postage and donate it to a charity of their choice. If you are like me and still like to mail cards you might want to shop right after Christmas to get your cards for the following year. You cannot beat the sales!

BOX 2 Has all of your decorations. Do you have a collection? When are too many Santa’s too many?

Fortunately I have a small area for my collection of Santa’s. Once I run out of room I am at my limit. No more Santa decorations for me unless I am willing to part with some of the older ones or least favorite ones. Since moving to a smaller space I’ve kept my top

three. My place still has the holiday feel.

BOX 3 Contains all your Holiday linens. Placemats, table cloths, napkins, seasonal napkin rings, and any Christmas music CD’s.

Now I am sure you are wondering about a tree.

Stay tuned and check out part 2 of easy Christmas Decorating Ideas to nd out more organizing tips.

Did you get to enjoy the outdoors this summer? Pitch the tent? Start the campre? Personalize the family campsite?

Hollywood celebrity Tom Hanks worked hard on his campsite in the blockbuster lm Cast Away (2000). In his Oscar nominated performance, Hanks battles a classic concept known as the “7 Enemies of Survival”.

7 Enemies of Survival:

Pain, cold, thirst, hunger, fatigue, boredom, and loneliness.

Although simple, the “7 Enemies of Survival” are important in wilderness training. It provides awareness for if a survival situation were to occur.

But how does this relate to seniors? Throughout this article, we will discuss how camping (with Tom Hanks), is similar to a senior living in isolation. We will draw from Hanks’ experiences for examples and relate it to seniors’ issues. Tips on how to assist your loved ones will follow.

RELATING BOREDOM & LONELINESS TO SENIORS

Hanks experienced that boredom and loneliness were the most dicult enemies to handle on a deserted island. This is exactly the same case for seniors isolated in their homes. The rst ve enemies are physical issues – they are easy to deal with individually. The tough ones are the mental issues of boredom and loneliness. These cannot be dealt with alone. Isolated seniors may lose their sense of belonging if they lack friends in community. Worse is if these seniors have physical disabilities and cannot go out. This loss of purpose may cause discouragement, and impair the strongest minds. Many claim to lose their will power, and creep into depression.

Hanks developed boredom and loneliness unexpectedly. Many people (of all ages) do not believe in loneliness. It is seen as being mentally weak. But honestly, who would admit they are lonely? Would you think twice before saying that out loud? Mental health stigma is unfortunately very present amongst the public. It is a societal issue and many countries have recognized that.

For example, a recently released New York Times article “Researchers Confront an Epidemic of Loneliness” references many issues related to loneliness. The article describes how mental feelings of loneliness can impact the physical body. There is more than just an increased stress response and a decreased immune system (white cell count). To summarize the other ndings by the article, loneliness impairs mobility, decreases performance of daily activities, and increases the risk of early death (more than obesity).

Hanks created a friend to combat loneliness and iconically named him Wilson.Although not stranded on an island like Hanks, isolated seniors may not speak to anybody for days. Some seniors only interact with the grocery store clerk twice a week. Others have trouble getting to the grocery store, coee shop, or community center. These seniors with physical mobility issues are literally stranded (like Hanks) in their own homes.

The New York Times article begins with introducing a breakthrough UK telephone service called the Silver Line Helpline. A description is given of a telephone operator having a spirited conversation. They are chatting about the caller’s 81st birthday last week. The conversation quickly turns sour when the operator asks “who did you celebrate with?”. With the answer “No one…”, it was clear she had been alone for a week.

Like Hanks and many other mammals, a basic need of human beings is contact with other people.

WHAT CAN WE DO ABOUT IT?

Be present with your loved ones. Having quality time with your loved ones does not mean you have to do an activity. Lunch out every time you are together should not be a requirement. In fact, you do not have to do anything at all. Being present with them and doing absolutely nothing together is completely ne. For example, sitting together over coee while reading separate material works. In this case, you are physically present together without an interacting activity. This is enough to help loneliness.

Connect your loved one to the community. Like stated above, a support network of friends is very important. Whether it is a non-prot, or community center group, these social connections give a reason to get up in the morning. Just getting out of the house, and interacting is the key. It is never too late to start! A group exercise group is even better: it provides physical and mental stimulation.

Help do your part. Simply put, make sure your loved ones are socially supported! You can also join us in leading by example and spreading the word.

Don’t Make 2017 Goals Until You’ve

Done this StepThe BIGGEST wasted resource that comes at this time of year is not learning from our experiences from the past 12 months. You have gone through many situations, grown your skills and gained information in all 10 areas of your life including business, health, love and many more.

Instead of capitalizing on this wealth of knowledge it often slips through our ngers and it’s usually forgotten. Instead you might just jump into the next year and start setting up some big goals. Then wonder why you have similar results.

It’s not just a HUGE opportunity to grab golden nuggets from 2016 to create the right goals, but also imperative to build the foundation for 2017.

TOP 7 reasons to build a foundation before your goals:

Level Up Your Goals: By learning more about what you achieved you can see the next step towards bigger goals and accomplish them easier.

Figure out Your Goal Type: Seeing patterns in where you have done well helps you determine the types of goals you're more likely to succeed with.

Release Goals: By listing the disappointments you’ll discover which goals you want to let go of and which ones you want to commit to achieving.

Clean Slate: You get to release the disappointments, the guilt and the judgment you’ve been carrying around, so you can feel lighter and start fresh.

Boost Morale: You’ll actually celebrate the success you’ve had which increases your motivation and condence for new goals.

Stop Repeating Mistakes: By Reviewing Your Year your new foundation will include everything you’ve learnt so you don’t make the same mistakes twice.

Builds Focus: The last part of building a foundation is creating guidelines for the next year which will help to keep you focused on the prize.

Now seeing these seven benets, how would it feel to have a foundation in place to give you a kick-start into 2017? Pretty good right! And even better when this foundation will set you and your goals up for success.

After doing this with dozens of women in my Dynamic Year™ Program, I’ve seen rst hand how it gives you the chance to look at the past year to capture the good, release the bad and move forward with the golden nuggets we have uncovered.

How Do You Do It?

By using A 3-Phase Review Your Year Process to be able to build that foundation:

Reect

Find Wisdom

Create Guidelines

It’s important to have the right questions, tools, and templates to be able complete the 3 Phases eectively. Then

you’ll be able to have more peace of mind that you created a powerful foundation and can start goal setting for a successful New Year.

Now when you plan your year-end think about more than taxes and resolutions – ask yourself this question, “When will I Review MY Year?”

Here’s a tough question for you: ~ Are you settling for success instead of fulllment?

Realizing I had achieved “empty success” hit me between the eyes. I settled for success by denition, yet yearned deep down for much more – I wanted fulllment.

Then I discovered The Passion Test by Janet Bray Attwood, and everything started to change. The test uncovered a very big, hard-to -swallow truth: I was not following my passions. Heck! I didn’t even know what my true passions were!

Here’s what I learned:If you are passionate about your work, great! Keep it up. If you hate it, stop doing it. This is easier said than done, I know. But getting up every morning lled with dread for what’s ahead is no way to live – no matter how good the benets are or how big the pay cheque is. The cost to you is much more. End the self torture, uncover your passions, and go get them.

Now, doing what you love is a dicey subject. Sounds great, however some critics argue that doing what you love as a “job” isn’t ideal. Others think following your passions is a - road. Here’s the thing: There are arguments for living life a thousand dierent ways. The one constant and one for sure thing is that if you’re happy, you’ve made it. So if doing work feeds your passions and your soul, do that.

Although nding my passions and going after them was life changing for me, I’m a realist – bills needs to get paid and kids need to eat. And sometimes responsibility trumps passion. That said, just because you have to earn a living in a dispassionate way to make ends meet (for now), doesn’t mean you throw your passions out the window! No way. Hello, side project! Always do the things you’re passionate about. In whatever capacity.

Do you really love what you do?Many of my clients say to me: “I love what I do!” However, when I start asking questions, they soon come to realize that they’re just trying to convince themselves that this is the life and career they want. They’ve settled.

So, how do you know if you are settling?

Ask your self:Why do I work here? | Do I watch the clock all day?

Am I excited about getting out of bed Monday mornings? When Friday comes, am I dying for the day to be done?

How do I feel after every day? | Is my job causing stress?

Have the courage to answer these honestly and paint yourself an honest picture of your life right now.

Good news: You are allowed to want more. You are allowed to change what you are doing. I know that it sounds easy yet I know it is not. I still have one foot in my mortgage company and one in my passion. It took me a while but I have found the balance and, as a result, can honestly say that I am no longer settling.

If you want dierent, you have to do dierent. Start making a plan!! You only have one life. No more settling!!

Vehicle expenses incurred to earn business income can be claimed as expenses on your income taxes. Typical expenses include:

• Fuel and oil costs• Insurance• Interest costs on money borrowed to buy a vehicle• Maintenance and repairs• Leasing costs

To substantiate a claim for vehicle expenses CRA requires documented evidence of the travel incurred. CRA says the best evidence to support the use of a vehicle is an accurate logbook of business travel maintained for the entire year. For each business trip your Vehicle Travel Log should show the following:

• The date• Destination• Purpose of the trip• Distance covered

To calculate your motor vehicle expense claim total all the kilometres driven for business use over the year and divide by the total kilometers driven. It is important to record the odometer reading at the beginning of the year and again at the end of the year as the dierence will be your total kilometers driven during the year.

Couple of notes about tracking your mileage:• If you drive more than one vehicle to earn business

income you need to maintain a Vehicle Travel Log for each vehicle

• Regular travel to and from your home and a primary place of business like an oce, shop or store is considered by CRA to be personal mileage

What does a Vehicle Travel Log look like? Your travel log can be a note book you keep in your car, an excel spreadsheet on your computer or an app on your smart phone. Some smart phone apps synch with your vehicles Bluetooth and automatically begin recording when you start to drive. All you do is record if the trip is for business or personal use. A key feature to look for in any smart phone app is the ability to produce a mileage report for the year in a format that can be easily downloaded.
