Dear St. Paul of the Cross Parishioners,

The life of the parish is just like the life of a family. We rejoice when babies are born and we grieve when someone passes on. Every milestone our children cross becomes an occasion to gather together and celebrate. For our parish community the high points of our collective life are the celebrations of the sacraments. These two weekends almost 220 children will make their First Holy Communion and the family of the parish will come together to celebrate our oneness. Every one of these liturgies is joyful and gives us hope that the Church of God will continue to flourish in this corner of the Lord’s garden.

It is always my privilege to thank many, many individuals. First of all, I want to thank our DRE, Ms. Anna Mae Parkhill, who directs one of the largest and one of the best religious education programs in the Archdiocese. Our children are well prepared to receive Jesus and I know that she and her many catechists and teachers have invested endless hours to prepare our children. Next, our thanks go to our principal, Mrs. Lorelei Bobroff, and her teachers who pass on the faith to our St Paul students. Mrs Bobroff ensures that our Catholic school fosters its Catholic identity particularly by insisting on the religious formation of our children. I want to express my heartfelt gratitude to our volunteer catechists who give of their precious time for this delicate ministry.

My thanks go in a special way to our parents who are the first teachers of the faith to their children. I would like to encourage the parents to continue bringing their children to Sunday Mass now that they have completed another step in their Christian initiation. Just as our bodies need daily nourishment, our spirits need to be fed with the Body and Blood of the Lord on a regular basis. Finally, I want to thank our dear children who are taking this big step in their faith life. I want to say to our First Holy Communicants: “Dear children, please remember that Jesus who has come into your hearts wants to be your best friend. Keep him close to you always!”

The First Holy Communion of our parish children is also an occasion for all of us to think of the day we received the Lord for the first time. I would like to share with you what I tell the children during the First Holy Communion Masses that I preside over. I would like to leave the same three words with you.

First, believe. The Eucharist does not make sense without faith. It is faith that changes everything. As the great St. Thomas Aquinas wrote in the beautiful hymn, Pange Lingua: “Faith for all defects supplying, where the feeble sense fail.” The Catholic Church down the centuries has always taught that the Eucharist is the real Body and Blood of Jesus Christ, the Son of God. This is not a symbol; it is not an allegory. That is why when we receive the Eucharist, we say, “Amen!” We submit in utter belief. That is why we fast from food and drink (except water) for at least an hour before receiving Holy Communion. Do all Catholics believe fully the mystery of the Eucharist?

Second, become. The teaching of the Church has told us that Christ does not become part of us. We become part of Christ. Our hope and prayer is that gradually we will be transformed into Christ. This thought makes me deeply aware of my own failure to become more and more like Christ. How many times have I received Communion in my life? How many Masses have I celebrated over the last 28 years? And yet, I have so far to go to become more and more like the Lord.

Third, love. Just last Sunday we heard Jesus say to His disciples: “By this they shall know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another.” The mark of the true Christian is Christ-like love. The reception of Holy Communion should make this mark shine out even more. In one of his sermons, St. John Chrysostom chides his Christians because they did not love as they should: “You have tasted the Blood of the Lord, yet you do not recognize your brother… You dishonor this table when you do not judge worthy of sharing your food with someone judged worthy to take part in this meal… God freed you from all your sins and invited you here, but you have not become more merciful.” May every communion we receive make us more ready to love our brothers and sisters!

Let us continue to hold our First Communicants in prayer. May their example revive our faith and rekindle our love! St. Maximilian Kolbe, who laid down his life to save his brother, gives us memorable words to ponder: “If angels could be jealous of men, they would be so for one reason: Holy Communion.” Let us grow in our gratitude and appreciation for this great sacrament. Yours warmly, Fr Britto Pastor

TRAINING FOR MASS COORDINATORS Thursday, May 12th at 7:00 pm in the Upper Church

Do you think that having everything in place for the start of Sunday Mass is another miracle of the liturgy? Or do you recognize that there is a lot involved in preparing for the celebration of each Eucharist?

If you would be interested in volunteering to minister as a Mass Coordinator for our weekend liturgies, please consider attending our training session in the Upper Church at 7:00 on Thursday, May 12th.

You will learn the names and purpose of all the items used in the celebration of the Mass, as well as how to set-up and clean up for each liturgy. We will then practice preparing the Upper Church and the

Holy Family Chapel for weekend Mass. Training and on-going supervision will be provided by the Deacons.

All we ask is that you have a love for the Eucharist and an ability to commit to a fairly regular schedule of attendance.

If you have any questions about this new Ministry for St Paul of the Cross, please contact Deacon Bob Bulger at [email protected] or 847-825-7605.

St. Paul of the Cross is hosting a year long program called Journeys.

This is a divorce healing and recovery support group for men and women who are divorced or in the process of divorce, and who wish

MARY, THE MOTHER OF MERCY

In this Jubilee Year of Mercy, we have focused on the Compassionate Heart of Jesus. But in this year, we must not forget His Immaculate Mother Mary, the Mother of Mercy. We think of Our Blessed Mother in the glorious aura of the Annunciation, the Nativity or of her Assumption. However, her life was filled with distress

over threats of the well-being of the Child Jesus, living with the prophecy by Simeon of hardships to come, bereavement over the

death of St. Joseph and the witness and agony of the horrific passion and death of her Son. She well experienced and understood the troubles that may occur in life’s journey.

In our Faith, we are advised by the Church of the tremendous love that Jesus had for His Mother. We have seen His response to her request at the Wedding Feast of Cana, although He said it was not His time yet. There is no one closer to Jesus and His Heart of Divine Mercy than Mary our Mother. It is reason-able that we come to her to plead for help with our life’s troubles - she knows what it is all about. She is our Mother filled with pity and understanding - she wants to help us by interceding with her Divine Son.

When we visit the Adoration Chapel, we are there before the Real Presence of Christ. Mary is with us, also. We pray to her to help us. She presents her intercession, wrapped in her warmth and understanding of her earthly children, to our Merciful Savior in the Blessed Sacrament. She wants us to bask in the rays of His Mercy and Love and not to wallow in the darkness of despair and anguish.

Tracy Holmes has three children, one 11 year old at St Paul, two teenagers and one supportive husband. She is the owner of Studio H, Inc. a design firm working with builders & developers in the Midwest to create residential environments. Tracy has been inspired over the past few years by the SPC community as it strives to provide a supportive climate for all of our students. She believes we, as community stakeholders, need to ensure that every student is fully prepared for the next stage of their life, whether from grade to grade or after graduation. As an advocate for Catholic Education, she would seek to work with the community to continue to create an environment that gives our students and staff what they need to be successful. Tracy sees the School Board as a ministry that sets the tone for the school and would like to be a part of the team that provides advisory oversight for our school and it’s Catholic Faith in the upcoming years. Mrs. Holmes is always excited about bringing people together who can respectfully argue policy and propose thoughtful, responsible, faith filled solutions. In addition to volunteering at St Paul as a Room Parent, Lunch Supervisor and Ski Trip Co-Coordinator, she has served on a number of boards, committees and volunteer task forces including the Saint

Cornelius School Board, Intuit Center for Outsider Art, and The Center of Concern here in Park Ridge. As a small business owner of a service-oriented business, she can speak to the balance between financial sustainability and providing a quality service. Tracy’s submission for school board is an extension of her desire to serve this community and she feels that serving as a board member is one of the most direct ways to make a difference.

I am interested in being more involved with my church and the school. I am a cradle Catholic with 12 years of religious education and various coursework in later years. My work background involves food processing similar to a manufacturing environment; preparing and assembling up to 3K meals daily. Primarily my responsibilities have involved support functions to include administrative management, continuous improvement, IT project management, and general operational support. So I am familiar with budgets, control, projects, payroll, AP/AR, and general business administration which I believe would be beneficial to a school board. I have lived in Chicago (Park Ridge/ Des Plaines) for 5 years and have been a member of St Paul of the Cross for those 5 years. I feel that SPC plays an important role in this community and I would like to play a larger role in this by becoming a member of the school board. Cathy Mitchell

I write to express my interest in serving on the St. Paul of the Cross School Board. As a parent of two children at St. Paul of the Cross School, I have benefitted directly from interactions with several of the school board members. This experience has reassured me that the board is there to support parents as partners in their child’s education. Having children in both 1st and 4th grade, I am an invested parent eager to be involved and serve as a resource to the board, teachers, parents and students. My involvement with the parish began in 2009 when our youngest was baptized at St. Paul of the Cross Church. Deacon Bob and his wife warmly welcomed us to the parish and instantly made us feel part of the SPC family. Our oldest child began attending preschool during the 2010-2011 school year and Max made his first Communion in 2014. We look forward to Charlie making his Communion next year. I believe my experience as educator, counselor and administrator (within the Archdiocese) makes me a strong

candidate for a board position. I value Catholic education having attended Catholic school from elementary school through college. I hold a Master’s in Social Work with a concentration in School’s. Over the past seven years, I’ve served both as Counselor and member of the Administration at Immaculate Conception-Saint Joseph School, a thriving school within the Archdiocese. In this position, I counsel elementary and middle school students and teachers. I have initiated and implemented several school-wide social emotional programs that include:

Bullying prevention program, Second Step, Responsive Classroom.

Prior to my work at Immaculate Conception-Saint Joseph, I counseled at Loyola Academy and am familiar with the high school and college matriculation process. As educator and parent, I understand firsthand the importance of a collaborative relationship between home and school. I welcome the opportunity to serve the St. Paul of the Cross School community.

Ronda Quinn

My husband, Mike, & I live in Park Ridge with our 3 kids who are in 5th, 3rd & 1st grades at St. Paul of the Cross. I have been very active at SPC as the co-chair of Celebrating the Spirit, the school’s biggest fundraiser, in 2014 & 2015 raising over $80,000 each year which was used for technology initiatives at the school and for the playground. I have also served as a Parent Ambassador for prospective families on shadow days and at various open houses. I am currently a Director of International Tax at Hyatt Hotels Corporation and was previously at Deloitte Tax for over 11 years. I earned an LL.M. in Tax from Northwestern University School of Law and a JD from Chicago-Kent College of Law. I am also a CPA and graduated from Marquette University with a BS in accounting. As a graduate of catholic grade school, high school & college, I believe in the importance of a strong catholic education (I even spoke at a recent mass why we chose to send our kids to SPC). I am excited for this opportunity to work closely with the new administration and current Board on ensuring that SPC is the place to be. Bridget Snyders

My wife Kay and I have been members of the SPC parish since 1999. We really enjoy the sense of community that surrounds this special parish and school. We currently have a daughter in 7th grade at SPC and our son will begin there for 6th grade next year. I have been a board member of the Men’s Club for the past few years. In addition, I was the Treasurer for Cub Scout Pack 204 in Park Ridge for the past three years. I am a graduate of St. Tarcissus Grammar School and Weber High School, both on the Northwest Side of Chicago. I also have a B.S. in Accounting and an MBA in Finance, both from DePaul University. So you could say I grew up in the Catholic schools. A primary reason that I want to be on the school board is that I know the high value of a solid education that includes a Catholic or spiritual element. Children are not only given an education to help them succeed in the working world, they also learn important values that will help make them valuable contributors to society and their communities. I recognize the difference a good Catholic education can make in a child’s life and I want to utilize my skills to help ensure that SPC will

remain a thriving school for many years to come. I have worked in the business world for the past 30 years in Chicago in various financial roles. I started as an auditor at KPMG, held various leadership roles at several companies, and for the past 13 years I have worked at the Federal Reserve Bank of Chicago. I feel that my background in finance, strategy, IT, and overall leadership would be an asset to the school board. But most importantly, I believe in the mission of SPC and want to see it fulfilled.

6th Sunday of Easter Page 15

NURSE’S NOTES………. Hello, May! Spring in all it’s glory! The beautiful green of new leaves on the trees. A riot of colors as various types of flowers explode into their first bloom. Seeing our neighbors again. Hearing children’s voices as they play and walking and running outdoors. And beets, which may seem an odd addition here! But, research states that drinking beet juice after aerobic exercise, especially more intense exercise like

running, can be beneficial to the heart. Beet juice contains a substance that can relax blood vessels (nitrates). Nitrates, (and relaxed blood vessels), help give our cells abundant oxygen, therefore helping the heart function more easily and efficiently after exercise. Another source of nitrites are green, leafy veggies. Speaking of exercise....like many things in life, moderation appears to be better for most of us. Research is indicating that too little or no exercise is detrimental to good health and over-exercising may not be beneficial to long term good health. Strenuous exercise (or over-exertion), on a long term basis may cause pathological changes to the heart and arteries for some folks, according to new research. The focus of this research is strenuous jogging, but may be applied to other forms of consistent, over exertion. Recommended for long term health benefits is consistent, less strenuous exercise, i.e.: jogging at 5 miles per hour 3 times per week while filling the other days with yoga, walking, Tai Chi, swimming, calisthenics, etc. If we are able to walk, run or just encounter a lovely scene, or listen to lovely music or experience anything that inspires awe, we may be lowering the level of inflammation in our body. A small study is indicating that when we experience awe, the amount of inflammation causing substances in the body was reduced. If, in addition, we pray consistently, we are also gaining health benefits. Past and current research states that prayer is beneficial to our health. Some of us at this time of year may be a tad awestruck if we experience the sight and fragrance of flowers. We may also experience a sneeze or two. We may think it’s the pollen, (causing the sneezing). Unless we are allergic or sensitive to surrounding grasses or tree pollen, we are probably reacting to the fragrance of the flowers. Pollen from flowers is generally spread by insects or animals whereas tree and grass pollen is spread by wind. So, if we are fragrance sensitive, we may want more fragrance-free flowers like tulips, crocuses, daffodils, daisies or some (fragrance-free) roses in our garden. Some of us may sniffle our way through the year; flowers or no flowers. We may have an overactive nose or vasomotor rhinitis. Blood vessels in the nose overreact to certain substances in the environment or when there’s strong emotional stimuli, like anger. The blood vessels swell and excess mucous is produced and we sniffle, all through the year. Spicy food, strong odors, humidity and temperature changes may trigger this problem. There are medications that can help, like decongestants, but using over-the-counter nasal sprays are not recommended. They can worsen this problem. Until next week, let’s remember , “to have ideas is to gather flowers. To think is to weave them into garlands.” ” And to pray is the beneficial finishing touch. Fondly, Linda Burk, Your Parish Nurse

Is your to-do list doing you in? We’ve got a crew that can bail you out.
