Ben L. Cavil, Sr. Big Ben
Ben L. Cavil, Sr. was born May 29, 1905, in the Danville community approximately three milesnorthwest of Willis, (Montgomery County) Texas. At the age of three, his mother passed away and his
aunt Nancy Owens, affectionately called Mama Nannie stepped in and assisted in the raising of the
children. These children were nurtured in Old Danville and Ben attended Willis High School and thenmoved to Beaumont, Texas to enroll in Charlton-Pollard High School.
Ben graduated in 1925 and enrolled in Wiley College in the fall of that year. Ben was a standout football
player in college and became known as Big Ben. During his stint at Wiley College from 1925-1929,Big Ben was one of the gridiron 11 announced as a 1927 Second Team Pittsburgh Courier (HBCU) All-American and a 1928 First Team Pittsburgh Courier (HBCU) All-American at the fullback position as
announced by the Pittsburg Courier African American newspaper. Only 11 players were selected formany years due to the fact most players played both offense and defense.
Mr. Ben Cavil was a member of the Wildcat squad that played in the inaugural State Fair Classic in 1925held in Dallas, Texas for the Negro Day at the State Fair of Texas, featuring Lan gston (Oklahoma) and

Under the guidance of legendarycoach Fred Pop Long, Big Ben Cavil led the Wildcat gridironers to the Southwestern AthleticConference (SWAC) for three consecutive years from 1927-1929 and a Co-Black College NationalChampionship in 1928 (8-0-1), sharing the title with Bluefield State (8-0-1) as announced by the PittsburgCourier. This was during a time Wiley College dominated the HBCU football landscape, particularly the
Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) winning five conference football championships during thedecade of the 1920s, (1921, 1923, 1927, 1928, and 1929).
