A PRESTIGIOUS NATIONAL KEY UNIVERSITY PROMULGATED BY THE GOVERNMENT SINCE 1960

ONE OF THE FIRST LEADING CHINESE UNIVERSITIES FUNDED UNDER THE PROJECT 211”

Welcome to UIBE

1

The University of International Business and Economics (UIBE), situated in the northeast of Beijing, was founded with a mission to prepare China's international trade talents in 1951. In 1960, UIBE gained its reputation to be listed among a group of 64 prestigious national key universities and received high level of support from the central government. UIBE graduates have played a leading role in China's policy to open up the country to the world. In the 1990s, graduates from UIBE comprised one-half of China MOFCOM's (Ministry of Commerce) total workforce, including its 196 commercial offices around the world. In 1996, UIBE became one of the first leading Chinese universities included under the "Project 211", an ambitious government program aimed at turning about 100 Chinese universities into exceptionally high-quality academic institutions in the 21st century.

UIBE pursues to be an outstanding national university and a prestigious international university. With more than 60 years of development, UIBE has transformed into a multidisciplinary university specialized in the fields of economics, management, liberal arts and law and gained its strength in the subjects such as international trade, law (international law), finance, business management and foreign languages (business languages). At present, UIBE offers nearly 50 majors to overseas students in bachelor, master and doctoral programs.

Ranked among the top universities in China for international education, UIBE has a total enrollment of over 16,000 full-time students, of which more than 3,100 are international students from 126 countries. UIBE graduates are popularly recognized by the employers for their professionalism, high-level skills, strong linguistic ability, flexibility and international outlook. UIBE graduates have been employed in international trading firms, big banks, multinational corporations and commercial institutions stationed abroad. In the past few decades, UIBE has been proud of the performance of its graduates and their many contributions to linking China with global economies.

As one of the leading Chinese universities for the study of international trade and economics, UIBE welcomes all international outstanding candidates to apply to its high-quality International Undergraduate Programs (IUPs).

With an ever changing and complex global climate, it is the responsibility of educators to provide students with the necessary tools needed to face future challenges.

Built upon UIBE’s long tradition of producing global-ready graduates, the IUPs will provide international undergraduates with the same preparedness that current UIBE graduates possess. To meet arising global challenges, the IUPs will provide students with rich knowledge, high-level skills and responsibility and ability to integrate knowledge from their major fields and other disciplinary aspects to solve complex real world problems.

Program Requirements

The IUPs are structured as follows:

Students must complete 64 credits of the theme-centered general education core, 8 credits of selective courses and 4 credits of Practicum in the first two years.

6

Page 9: IUP Brochure 2015

2. Integrative Learning Requirements-Capstone Project(4 credits)

The Capstone Project connects the general education with real world experience. It focuses on Chinese studies and consists of two requirements- a course and a related field trip. Different routes might be offered, for example, route 1 focuses on the origin of the Chinese civilization along the rivers, route 2 on peoples and cultures in mid-west China and route 3 on urbanization and rural development in an increasingly open society in the suburbs of Beijing. Students should form interdisciplinary teams to apply what they have learned in the general education courses to a real challenge emanating from the changes in the society. The level of achievement is measured by the quality of the students’ knowledge, their mastery of key skills, their attentiveness to issues of ethical and social responsibility, and their facility in integrating different parts of their learning.

3. Writing PortfolioRequirements (3 credits)

Students are expected to competently write in a range of styles and contexts for different audiences. The writing portfolios constitute an important educational experience. To meet the portfolio requirements, students, at the end of their sophomore year, must submit three papers demonstrating their ability to write effectively in different rhetorical and disciplinary contexts. The three submitted papers must represent at least two of the following four disciplinary divisions (Humanities, Literature, Social Sciences, and Mathematics/Natural Sciences). Of the three submitted papers, at least one paper must come from the “writing” course. Instructors will certify that the papers are written for their classes and indicate whether they have since been revised. In submitting the three papers, students should write a reflective essay about their writing to introduce the portfolios. The papers must demonstrate mastery of each of the key writing skills—the ability to report on observation, to analyze complex information, to provide interpretation, to use document sources, and to articulate and support a thesis-driven argument.

4. Bilingual Requirements

Students enrolled in the IUPs are expected to be proficient in both English and Chinese. Compulsory Chinese courses which are offered in the first two years of IUP study take 26 credits and the textbooks applied are those which have been assigned for EU-China Managers Exchange and Training Programme(METP). Before a student completes the degree requirements, he/she must demonstrate his/her proficiency in Chinese by passing an exam arranged by the university.

7

Page 10: IUP Brochure 2015
