Cows to Cause a Stir at Midmar
A herd of cows will be causing a stir at the Aquellé Midmar Mile this February. The eight novice swimmers who form this so-called herd are raising much-needed funds for the Childhood Haematology Oncology Clinics (CHOC) by swimming across the dam in various teams. CHOC is a Non-Profit Organisation that cares for children suffering from cancer. One of the swimmers explained that “the aim of the day is to raise awareness and funds for them [CHOC]” and that “we are doing it for the children, our superheroes.”
Last year I told you all about my hubby’s Amashova ride to raise funds for CHOC - he cycled in a “cow” outfit. He tends to get roped into these things, whether he wants to or not. With the next “cow” event being the Midmar Mile, I naturally volunteered his services without first checking with him. When I told him what I had done, he replied “ Nothing like a little pressure! I don’t even know if I can swim that far!” Well I imagine we will find out pretty soon...sink or swim... He needs to raise R2000 in order to “qualify” to wear the cow costume, so if you’d like to donate towards this excellent cause, do let me know. Even R50 will help CHOC raise much needed funds. If you’d like to also join the herd and swim the Midmar Mile for CHOC, contact [email protected] for more information on how to join the herd and make a difference. Alicexxx

Everyday LifeNelson Mandela
Heritage Sites• Nelson Mandela Capture Site: On 5 August 1962, Nelson Mandela was captured by the South African Police on the R103 about 5km outside the town of Howick in the Natal Midlands of KZN. Mandela was posing as a chauffeur after a clandestine visit to ANC leader, Albert Luthuli to request support for an armed struggle. This unassuming spot has now become a memorial to the great man.
Apart from the very interesting sculpture depicting Mandela’s image and his long walk to freedom, the Apartheid Museum, the uMngeni Municipality and the KZN Heritage Council, have established the Truth Café and the Truth Store at the site and free tours are offered.

• Inanda Heritage Route: During S.A.’s first democratic elections Nelson Mandela chose to vote at Ohlange High School in Inanda as a way of honouring the first President of the ANC, John Langalibalele Dube, who is buried at the site. The Inanda Heritage Route takes guests to this school as well as to the Inanda Seminary, a private girls’ school, which, unlike other private schools of its kind at the beginning of apartheid, was not closed down. This was because the government of the day saw no threat in educating girls. Steeped in interesting history this institution is well worth a visit.
A final stop is to a museum dedicated to Mahatma Ghandi. The museum was the former leader’s house and each room is filled with plaques describing his philosophy, explaining historic moments and displaying quotes.

Then massage the hands with the Sh’Zen Treatment Cream (to increase the benefits cover your hands with gloves and leave on for at least 20 minutes).
A face mask for your hands, this cream is rich in Aloe Vera, an ingredient that soothes, heals and brings deep nourishment. The cream also contains lime blossom which diminishes the appearance of age spots.

Colour-Me Eston Run 2014The Colour-me Eston Run will be taking place on Saturday 1 February at the Beaumont Eston Farmers’ Club in Eston (approximately 30 minutes from Pietermaritzburg and 45 minutes from Durban). Drawing inspiration from The Colour Run, which started in the U.S. in January 2012 and known as the “Happiest 5km on the Planet”, this fun 5km paint race will be devoted to celebrating health, happiness and giving back to the Eston community. All proceeds will go towards the Eston Primary School. Dress code is white. The run will start at 12 midday and runners will be covered with powder paint at each kilometre mark as they make their way from start to finish. The afternoon will continue with a colour festival during which runners and supporters will be invited to use as much paint powder as they can to create lasting memories. With additional powder, accompanied by live music, this should prove to be a fun time! The Eston Beaumont Farmers’ Club’s cricket field will be transformed into an arena of colour, music and fun, with food and beverages on sale throughout the afternoon. Runners, joggers and walkers can sign up at www.roag.co.za. Late entries are also welcome. Visit the official Facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/pages/COLOUR-me-ESTON-run/610160245711198?ref=hl Join in and enjoy tons of colour and tons of fun!

• Pietermaritzburg-based Gift of the Givers is the first international humanitarian organisation accredited by Proudly South African and has been rated as one of the most trusted and admired non-governmental organisations in the country. In recognition of Gift of the Givers’ humanitarian work, the Post Office has issued a miniature sheet that costs R10.60 and is valid postage for A5-sized domestic letters. The stamps will be available at www.virtualpostoffice.co.za and most post offices. Enquiries can also be made at [email protected].
• Msunduzi Hospice which celebrated its 30th anniversary in 2013 was originally known as The Pietermaritzburg Hospice Association and was founded in 1983 to provide quality palliative care for people suffering from life-threatening illnesses. In 1999 it amalgamated with the Edendale Hospice, thus extending the reach of the organisation into the greater Pietermaritzburg area. In the past, the association focused on helping terminally-ill patients to die with dignity. Although that philosophy is still there they have also tried to move away from the idea of Hospice as a place to die, towards the idea of Hospice as place of life, where people who are living are also assisted. This shift coincided with the need to meet the needs of those suffering from HIV/AIDS and Tuberculosis. The care is provided free of charge to all regardless of race, gender, age or faith. Msunduzi Hospice is heavily reliant on monetary and in-kind donations from the public and they also rely on volunteers to assist in all areas. Hospice House has a Shop, Bookshop, Coffee Shop and Conference Centre. Contact 033 – 344 1560, www.hospicekzn.co.za.

Young Life/Party LifeGiving Kids the Right Start by Involving Them in MealtimesPlanting a veggie garden is an excellent way to get kids involved in mealtimes. If they grow their own food, they are more likely to eat it. Planting a vegetable or even simply a herb garden allows children to learn where their greens come from and how they grow. Allow your child to water the patch themselves and even pull out weeds. This teaches them responsibility and ownership. When the time comes, let your child pick and wash the fruit, vegetables or herbs to be used in the meal preparation and involve your child as much as possible. If planting a garden is not possible, take your child out on family outings to nearby farms or at the very least fresh food markets. Tips to encourage children to eat: • Cut foods, like sandwiches, fruit and veg, into different shapes or let your child cut the shapes with cookie cutters. • Arrange foods on the plate in funny shapes, or let your child design their own picture before sitting down to eat. • Serve fruit and veg skewers, which your child can help prepare. • Create ice-lollies from 100% fruit juice or yoghurt and add chopped-up fruit pieces. • Make jelly and add chopped-up fruit and even a biscuit before setting. Self-Service: At this age, children want to eat what everyone around them is enjoying, so they may often reach out and grab food. By providing your little one with fun and interactive utensils, bowls and plates toddlers will look forward to serving and feeding themselves.

Young Life/Party LifeSpend More Time with
Your Children by Working from Home
Car pools, lunch bags, after-school activities, dinner, homework, bath time, bedtime – all these responsibilities pile up on top of your own job and the other realities of adulthood. Each day with young kids feels like a week, each week like a month. Yet as every birthday passes, the years seem to be streaking by at warp speed, our adult lives often preventing us from fully appreciating the delicate nuances of our children’s lives.
When you add up all the time your kids spend at daycare, in school, asleep, at friends’ homes, with babysitters, at camp, and otherwise occupied with activities that don’t include you, the remaining moments become especially precious. There are only 940 Saturdays between a child’s birth and her leaving for college. That may sound like a lot, but how many have you already used up? If your child is five years old, 260 Saturdays are gone. Poof! And the older your kids get, the busier their Saturdays are with friends and activities. Ditto Sundays. And what about weekdays? Depending on your children’s ages and whether you work outside the home, there may be as few as one or two hours a day during the week for you to spend with them.
Hopefully one day you will greet your children’s departure with a profound sense of satisfaction because you’ve given them what they need to succeed and also given yourself what you need to feel like a successful parent. Optimise the time you spend with your kids by opening up your own healthcare practice from home. Contact Taryn for info.
