Editor’s LifeSeven months after his 21st birthday, my nephew Clinton Eccles was injured in a severe car accident on 11 May 2014. He suffered pulmonary contusions to the lungs and a broken jaw which required eight plates and more than 30 screws to reconstruct. The most severe injury, however, was to his spine. Clint fractured his fourth and fifth vertebrae. These vertebrae were replaced by a bone graft from his hip, fused to a plate. The accident has left Clinton medically diagnosed as a quadriplegic. Practically, this means he has no movement from his

chest down. This road has been long and hard, keeping Clinton in ICU and on a ventilator for more than three months. On 11 August Clinton was eventually weaned off the ventilator and he is undergoing rehabilitation at Entabeni Hospital.

Due to the severity of the spinal injury, Clinton’s life is naturally going to change drastically. He will require continued medical assistance and a caregiver. There are certain aids and devices that Clinton will require to improve his quality of life, such as a wheelchair, treatment and an altered living environment catering to his needs. We will be hosting a golf day and would greatly appreciate assistance in making this event possible. The Clinton Eccles Golf Day will be held on 10 October at Durban Country Club. We still need sponsors for greens, prizes or cash donations.

For more information contact Keagan Eccles on 083 228 2086 or visit the Facebook page: Clint’s Support & Update Group.

Healthy Life/Beautiful LifeSay Goodbye to Dull, Flaky

and Damaged Skin Exfolimate is the ultimate tool that delivers younger, fresher looking and feeling skin. This handy skin smoothing mate rejuvenates your complexion by instantly exfoliating and clarifying the skin’s pores, removing lingering dead skin and debris that causes nasty black heads and breakouts. Unlike traditional scrubs and loofahs, which simply shift around lingering skin cells, Exfolimate is 98% more effective at removing dead skin with just water. The secret is Exfolimate’s innovative micro-groove technology etched into each skin smoothing edge. These micro-grooves are precision designed to lift away dead skin cells from the surface, leaving behind smoother feeling and looking skin. With gentle fingertip pressure at a 90-degree angle, glide the Exfolimate face or body tool along the contours of your skin for easy exfoliation. Use Exfolimate to lift ingrown

hairs, before a spray-tan for a smoother coverage, for touchable feet, a smoother shave and cleaner base for cosmetics and also to remove sun crèmes and oils. Ultra hygienic Exfolimate won’t harbour germs or bacteria like frail shower mitts. Simply run the tool under warm running water to remove any lingering oils or debris and hang to dry for your next Exfolimate experience. Whether you’re on the go, or pampering your skin at home, make sure you bring your skin’s best mate for radiant, healthy looking skin. Exfolimate is available in the Duo Unit selling at R380 and the single unit which sells at R290. Distributed exclusively in Southern Africa by Indulgence Spa Products.

Healthy Life/Beautiful LifeEncourage Healthy Eating

Habits in your Children October brings with it National Nutrition Week and National Obesity Week. Recent South African statistics show that the overweight and obese prevalence in children was highest amongst two to five year olds, with 21.9% of boys and 23.9% of girls being overweight. It’s never too early to introduce healthy eating habits. Here some tips to help your child follow a healthy balanced lifestyle:

Blast off with breakfast: Skipping breakfast is associated with a higher risk for obesity in children, as it can result in them overeating at their snack or lunch time meal due to hunger. Family fun: Children learn eating habits from their parents, so try to eat with your children at the dinner table and avoid eating in front of the TV, as it is a distraction and doesn’t encourage children to register they are full, which can cause overeating. After one year, children should be eating the same foods at meals as the rest of the family. trash the Juice: Sweetened drinks have been shown to be one of the main causes of childhood obesity in the world. Avoid giving your child fizzy drinks, squashes, juice blends or cordials. Children should be drinking mostly water, milk and no more than 150mls of 100% fruit juice a day. Reduce screen time: It is recommended that children have no more than two hours a of screen time a day, as TV watching, playing on the computer and TV games discourages physical activity , a fundamental part of following a healthy lifestyle.

Healthy Life/Beautiful LifeEffects of Hearing Loss

in Children International Month for the Deaf, International Week of the Deaf and International Day of the Deaf were recently observed in September. The Deaf Federation of South Africa (DeafSA) promotes awareness of deaf persons in South Africa, as well as equality for deaf people, amongst deaf people and promoted by deaf people. Visit www.deafsa.co.za for more information. It is well-known that hearing is critical to speech and language development, communication, and learning. All babies should be screened within the first few weeks of birth. Some private hospitals do offer this service. A hearing screening is a painless procedure carried out when your baby is asleep or settled. There are four major ways that hearing loss can affect a child:• It causes delay in the development of speech and language.• The language deficit causes learning problems that result in reduced academic achievement.• Difficulty with communication can lead to social isolation and poor self-concept.• It can affect vocational choices. What to look out for:• Not reacting to loud noises.• Not responding to voices.• Not meeting speech and language milestones.• Often asks for repetition.

Healthy Life/Beautiful LifeHave your Child Assessed

For Spinal Problems Children often fall or experience bumps when playing, jumping on the trampoline or learning a new sport. Have you ever wondered what harm was done? Even though children are able to bounce back from an injury quickly, there are times when that injury is too much and can contribute to altered spinal function. When the function of the spine is hampered, the nerve at that level is affected, and therefore any organ or muscle that that specific nerve supplies is affected. This can manifest in headaches, muscle tightness and pain and even irritability and reduced attention span in childhood. This also leads to problems more prominent in adults such as lower back pain and headaches. Having your child assessed for spinal problems throughout their youth could eliminate major problems in adulthood. Chiropractors assess the spine for abnormal functioning and correct them with gentle, non-invasive techniques, allowing decreased nerve irritation and optimum spinal health. Posture showing that you or your child may need to see a Chiropractor: • The ear lobes are not at the same level when looking from the back • One shoulder is higher than the other • Shoes are wearing unevenly Posture in sitting and walking is also very important for spinal health. Sitting or standing in a slouched position puts a large amount of increased pressure on the joints in the spine. Carrying a heavy school bag on one shoulder or in one hand can lead to an altered posture; listing over to the heavy side. This done over a period of time can lead to muscle imbalance and altered mechanics of the spine.

Educated LifeConcentration

Listed below are some basic strategies that may assist in developing improved concentration skills in your child: • Routine is essential – this includes a regular bedtime! Make sure your child is getting 8 or 9 hours sleep every night. • Boundaries are important – having clear expectations of what is required of your child when doing certain tasks. • Make sure your child eats a balanced diet. Try to avoid foods that might increase hyperactivity or reduce focus. During the week, see if you can cut out these foods altogether: sugars, colourants, flavourants, preservatives e.g. sweets, certain cold drinks, chocolates, crisps and tinned foods. Also pay attention to any foods that may affect your child’s energy levels e.g. dairy and wheat. If you do have any concerns about food intolerances, chat to your paediatrician about testing.

• It is often helpful to give your child Omega supplements as these are important for good brain function! They are often found in concentration supplements that you can get in pharmacies. Chat to the pharmacists about which are recommended products. • Screen activities like watching TV, playing computer or TV games or playing on an iPad should be limited to a maximum of one hour a day during the week. These activities impact on a child’s ability to maintain active concentration. • Exercise is essential. A child should engage in exercise or physical activity every day if possible or at least three to four times a week. • Set time requirements that your child must adhere to when doing homework. Start with a short time period e.g. 10 minutes and use an egg timer to time your child.

Fun Run/Walk for Charity Another Huge Success

The eighth annual Pick n Pay Hyper 5km Fun Run/Walk for Charity in support of The Sunflower Fund took place on Sunday 14 September. The event started from Suncoast Amphitheatre and went out onto the promenade and back. A total of 2 000 participants donned the latest Sunflower Bandana in support of The Sunflower Fund and loved ones who had lost their battle to leukaemia. The atmosphere was festive with the team from Durban Roller Derby, Bierfest Girls, Prep Gum Boot Dancers, Dance Direction dancers and Northlands Girls High School singers and dancers entertaining the crowd. The South African National Blood Services (SANBS) collected 17 pints of much needed blood during the event. A total of R68 210 was raised, which will allow the fund to include new bone marrow stem cell donors on the South African Bone Marrow Registry. The more donors on the Registry the more hope children and young adults diagnosed with leukaemia have of finding their 1:100 000 donor match. The Sunflower Fund would like to thank Pick n Pay Hyper, Suncoast, Round Table Southern Africa, the media, the City and Durban Metro Police for making the event possible.

For more information on The Sunflower Fund visit www.sunflowerfund.org.za or call 0800 12 10 82. Please ‘like’ The Sunflower Fund KZN Facebook page if

Cloud dough (also known as moon dough or moon sand) is silky and mould-able and takes just three ingredients to make. It’s amazing stuff!

This can keep your children entertained for hours and can also be a fun party activity for young children. Just make sure you set it up outside, as it gets messy!

How to make coloured cloud dough:• 8 cups all-purpose (regular, white) flour• 1 cup baby oil• 1 heaped tablespoon of non-toxic Tempera paint

In a large bowl or container, stir your oil and flour together well. A pastry cutter or a potato masher work well to get everything really well blended into a smooth, crumbly powder. Add a heaped tablespoon of Tempera paint powder. Continue to mash and blend until the colour is completely mixed into the dough. Add some scoops,

Party Fun for Little Ones with Cloud Doughcups, moulds and play dough toys to your gorgeous bin of coloured cloud dough, and you’re ready for play!

For a toddler-safe, non-toxic version, replace the baby oil with one cup vegetable oil.
