Maths and English programmes for children of all ages and abilities

Our “Very Vintage High Tea” on the 2nd of September was a huge success, rais-ing around R80 000 for The Sunflower Fund. This will enable them to recruit 80 new bone marrow stem cell donors to include on the SA Bone Marrow Reg-istry. Whether you were a sponsor or a guest, or a reader who now knows more about the amazing work The Sun-flower Fund does, I’d like to thank you for being part of this event. There was no shortage of things to drink, see and eat: JC Le Roux, Liqui Fruit and GoCoffee cappuccinos were on tap, while the ladies enjoyed the more than 25 “pop-up shops”. Savoury and sweet treats by Eat Greek ensured that we did not want for anything. Faux fur, pearls, satin and lace, as well as divine fascinators (hairpieces) were on display in abundance. The tables were beautifully decorated, and the hall ex-pertly draped in cream fabric. This event has become well known for its awesome goodie bags, and with more than 200 generous sub-sponsors, the guests were spoilt rotten. At the close of the event, each lady collected their gift and a sepia photo which was taken on arrival by Steph Stein (guests posed in front of a genuine vintage car from Consolidated Auction Group). Baby City, La Lucia Mall and Sanlam were once again the main sponsors of this year’s event and I would like to thank them for their ongoing generos-ity! I would also like to thank ADT Secu-rity and First Car Rental for their con-t r i b u t i o n . To find out more about The Sun-flower Fund please visit w w w. s u n -flowerfund.org.za or call toll free 0800 12 10 82.

Colon Therapy Programme

Colon Therapy is a transformational detoxification process. The five-day programme offered by Carol Robinson of Inner Healing Therapy is not just a deep and highly effective physical detoxification process, but an excel-lent opportunity to detox the mental and emotional self. It is very evident during this programme that when your body unburdens itself of toxic waste, it gets easier to deal with mental and emotional baggage. When your body is unwell and in pain, it agitates the mind and emotions making the body feel even worse. Colon therapy attempts to bring the body back to the state of internal hygiene where all healing takes place. After treatment you can expect more vitality and energy, clarity of mind, im-proved relationships, better eyesight, and benefits in the body such as im-proved skin tone, weight loss, removal of heavy metals, removal of acids and overall improved health. It also assists, and in many cases, heals, ailments such as headaches, migraines, depres-sion, anxiety, indigestion, flatulence, constipation, diarrhoea, IBS, hyperten-sion, heart disease, eczema, psoriasis, asthma, diabetes, arthritis, gout, poor memory, mood swings, water reten-tion, painful periods and cancer.

Five-day fasting and daily detox treatment includes:

• Initial consultation, educating, coun-selling, nutrition and diet advice. • Detox drinks and tea. • Gentle lym-phatic drainage exercises. • Daily colonic irrigation. • Daily dry body brushing. • Daily lymph drainage mas-sage. • Bemer therapy. • Daily bal-ancing of metaphysical body. • Ba-sic iridology and reflexology. • Daily weighing. • One clay facial. • Kidney and liver cleanse advice. • Essential breathing and relaxation techniques. • After-care maintenance.

Sore Nipples While Breastfeeding

One of the most common challenges new mums experience while breast-feeding is sore nipples. It can make the most motivated mum want to reconsid-er breastfeeding, but there are things that can be done so don’t give up! • Try to find the cause of the pain. Look at your nipples after a feed. They “tell a story”. One of the most common rea-sons for sore nipples is an incorrect latch. Don’t just “grin and bear” it! If your nipples look “flattened” or have a line or ridge going through the centre or to one side, it means baby is not on deeply enough and may be positioned too far over to one or other side. • If your nipples got sore right from day one, it is probably a latching problem and you may need help latching baby properly. • If you only started experiencing pain when your mature milk came in, around day three or four, it’s probably because your breasts are too full/engorged and baby can’t latch deeply. Hand express a little milk before feeds or form a small circle with your forefinger and thumb and gently but firmly press into the areola around your nipples for one to three minutes to move the extra cellular fluid away from around the nipples so that baby can latch properly. • A tongue-tied baby may not be able to extend the tongue out far enough to cup the breast properly, causing pain. • If you or baby have been on antibiot-ics, or you had thrush during pregnancy, you may have thrush on your nipples. Ensure the thrush is treated. Breastfeeding should not be painful. Get help and enjoy your baby.

Bigger Really isn’t Better

Currently in South Africa one in five children is overweight or obese. These children are ticking time bombs for diabetes, heart disease, high blood pressure, sleep problems and bone fractures. Not to mention the psycho-logical implications, with many obese children suffering from poor self-es-teem and depression. Fat cells in chil-dren under the age of six can not only expand, but also multiply. As fat cells never die, overweight children carry into adulthood the increased likelihood of obesity. Childhood obesity is com-monly due to unhealthy eating habits coupled with low activity levels. The playground has been replaced by TV and computer screens. Easy access to sugar and fat-packed snack foods, such as energy drinks, biscuits and choco-lates, heightens the battle. Overeating is becoming easy with larger “value-for-money” portions. Over the past 20 years pizza slices have more than doubled in size, muffins have tripled in size, and standard fizzy drinks have tripled in volume. Modelling Change: Remember that children imitate adults, healthy change begins with increasing physical activity and encouraging healthy eating habits: • Physical activities should be fun, not “weight-loss chores”! Encourage out-door games, limiting computer and TV time. Children should be active for 60 minutes daily. This can be broken into 10 to 15 minute activity periods throughout the day. • Instead of choco-lates, biscuits and sweets, rather offer a variety of healthy snacks like fruits, yoghurts, nuts and vegetables. Have a large fruit bowl accessible, and en-courage interesting vegetable fingers dipped in hummus/cottage cheese as crunchy savoury snacks. • Use National Obesity Week (10 to 14 October) to re-assess your family’s eating and behav-iour patterns, and embark on a health-ier lifestyle together, today!

Nurture a Love for the Water Whilst Being a Disciplinarian

In order for swimmers to have fun whilst learning we need to be firm when educating them on all aspects of water and pool safety. If every swim-mer has self-discipline and is well be-haved, accidents will not happen as often. Parents and childminders should ALWAYS adhere to ALL the rules of pool safety AT ALL TIMES. Swimming pool rules: • No unsuper-vised swimming. • No child should be allowed in the pool surrounds at any time unless they are actually about to enter the pool. Don’t allow your child to ride their bicycle in the pool surrounds or push prams, bounce balls etc. • Children should ALWAYS enter the pool safely. NO jumping in to their par-ents! • Children should ONLY swim in a recognised swimming costume. This alerts the parent/childminder that the child is going to swim. • No eating or drinking in a pool. • No swimming in a storm. If you can hear thunder, exit the pool safely. • No rough play EVER - in-cluding holding on to each other. • No swimming in a dirty pool. Special tip to adults when entertain-ing around a pool or at the dam/beach/river: Have a roster of who is on water duty! A large number of drown-ings take place in home pools, often when there are a lot of people around the pool, i.e. when socialising. Let us all enjoy the pleasure of seeing our children learn to swim. But remember - it is never too early to start education on all aspects of water safety. Rather be firm and safe than kind and sorry!

Executive Functioning

Children with learning disabilities may struggle at school with the fol-lowing executive functioning skills: (1) Task Initiation – the ability to start without procrastinating. A child who procrastinates waits till the last minute for everything. They are unmotivated and lazy. Many children who have diffi-culty getting started also have trouble with planning and organising. They get overwhelmed so they don’t do anything. They may: • Have trouble starting even with directions on where and how to begin. • Find reasons not to begin homework at the agreed-upon time. • Be unable to complete multiple assignments. • Have difficulty follow-ing multi-step routines. • Hand in late assignments. • Don’t know where to begin writing. (2) Organisation - this skill is linked to planning and setting priorities and task initiation. Children lacking organisational skills lose every-thing. The consequences they suffer do not necessarily teach them a lesson (e.g. detention). Children with poor or-ganisational skills may understand the value of organisation but cannot organ-ise themselves. They: • Don’t hand in completed work. • Have trouble orga-nising their working and living space. • Come to school without necessary books/stationery. • Arrive late/hand in assignments late. • Hand in inaccu-rate/incomplete work. As schoolwork gets harder, children need to become more independent learners. (3) How you can help your child: Parents who work with the child’s teacher can im-prove their children’s executive skills. Remember that not all children re-spond to the same strategy. Each child is on a different developmental path and each child’s brain-based habits will vary. You and the teacher should work on the needs of your child. Teach your child executive skills, offer frequent reassurance and give clear, specific feedback.

How Not To Be a Couch Potato

It’s a beautiful sunny day outside. It’s school holidays and your children wake up at 10am and head straight for the lounge, close the curtains to shut out the sun and turn on the TV. The only other sound in the room is the crunch of crisps or the rustle of that packet of sweets. This frustrates you because you want them to be outside and ac-tive. But it’s not easy to motivate them in that direction because their team mates are also inside watching TV. We as parents need to encourage our children to participate in activities that will stimulate them and give them fun at the same time. So why not send them to Summer Camp? This will change their whole outlook on life. By going to Summer Camp they’ll learn that there are many other ways to stimulate their minds and have fun. They’ll meet chil-dren from different walks of life and see how important it is to be outdoors in the fresh air. Counsellors at the camp will encourage them to participate in activities of their choice and to learn about team spirit - from field sports to water sports to activities that suit the creative mind. You will find that even the laziest or quietest child will come out of their shell. They will become self-confident, motivated and active and they’ll want to let other children know that be-ing a couch potato is not the way to go. Once Summer Camp has done the ground work then it’s up to us as par-ents to keep reminding our children of the importance of the outdoors.

Museum Passport Competition

Hirsch’s, in partnership with KwaZulu-Natal Museum, Voortrekker/Msunduzi Museum, Macrorie House, Tatham Art Gallery, Project Gateway, and Com-rades House worked together on the Museum Passport competition with the idea to entice young learners to discover the history and mysteries of Pietermaritzburg. Schools from around Pietermaritzburg were able to enter with the view that learners would be-come long-time members of the mu-seums and encourage their classmates and friends to join. Hirsch’s gave away iPods to four ecstatic learners. Khany-isile Madlala (from Ndabenhle Primary School) said: “I can’t wait to share the news with the principal and the learn-ers of my school about this!” This is the third year that the Museum Passport competition has been running and will start again next year. Contact any of the Museums in Pietermaritz-burg for details.

Mad Science Party

Try out a “Mad Science Party” for your child’s next birthday party. Suitable for eight to ten year olds. Games:• Arrange for a dinkum child-friendly chemistry student or prof to attend your child’s birthday party to do some astounding experiments for the young audience. • Research some simple science experiments yourself and do a few with the children. Here’s one idea: Create a Water Whistle. Instructions: Cut partially through a drinking straw about 1/3 of the way down the straw. Leave a tiny bit of the straw intact so the two straw sections stay attached. Fill a cup full with wa-ter. Place the longer end of the straw in the water, turn the top to 90°and blow lightly into it. To vary the pitch raise and lower the straw in the water (www.stevespangler.com). Invitations: Take a photo of something creepy and write the party invitation on the white border or on the back. Table Place Settings: For each guest provide a bright orange paper plate, oversized plastic tongs (instead of cut-lery) and a plastic magnifying glass as an extra plate. Clip all the items to-gether with a clamp or large bulldog clip. Party Packs: Buy brightly coloured plastic pencil cases and fill them with sweets, edible bugs and a penlight torch. Throw in a few plastic bugs and a plastic eyeball for good measure! Food Ideas: Individual pots of two-min-ute noodles, individual cheese fondue dippers and transformer remote-con-trol cake. For the cake: bake an ordi-nary rectangular-shaped sponge cake and ice with purple and orange icing. Use treats like liquorice and smarties to create knobs, dials and antennae.

Use What?• Two paper cups • Three sheets of A4 paper • A pair of scissors • Sticky tape • A ballpoint pen • 5c coin • Sand

Do What?• Take a paper cup and draw a circle shape on the side of the cup. This should be roughly the size of a 50c coin.• Carefully pierce a hole in the centre of the circle with your pen then use the scissors to cut out the circle.• Take the second cup and place it inside your first cup. Draw around the inside of the hole you have cut out. • Separate the cups and cut out the circle you have drawn on the second cup.• Take a piece of paper and fold into a long bar. Stick it across the width of the cup with some tape.• Repeat with the second piece of paper. These bars will make the handle for your tap.• Cross one bar across the middle of the other to form a cross shape. Stick them together using tape. • Now you’ve made your tap handle you need to attach it to the inside of your tap. Place it across the top of your first cup and stick it down with tape.• To make the nozzle of the tap take another piece of paper and roll it into a tube and stick it with tape. This should be wider than the hole you cut on the side of the cup. Cut the tube in half (along the length).• Make tabs around one end by carefully cutting small snips all the way round the tube. • Fold back the tabs and place the nozzle in the hole on the second cup. Use tape to stick down the tabs.• Put the first cup inside the second cup. Rotate the handle so the holes are not lined up and the tap is closed.• Fill the tap with sand, place over a bowl and turn the handle. As the hole opens, watch as sand pours out of your tap!

So What? We use taps every day, whether we are doing dishes, watering the garden or simply having a bath. Taps are very important to our everyday lives because they supply us with water, although, we never stop to think just how they work. By making our very own fantastic faucet in this workshop we get to see how water is able to flow through our taps and importantly how we are able to control this water flow by opening and closing our tap (turning the handle). In order for our “water” (lentils) to flow we needed to turn the handle so that the 2 holes in our cups were aligned. This complete alignment allows heavy flow of our lentils. Partial alignment of the holes allows light/little flow of our lentils. No alignment between the 2 holes in our cups meant that our tap was closed and no lentils are allowed to flow. Our taps at home work the same way except they have a rubber washer between the water pipe and the screw in the tap. This stops the tap from leaking and helps to control the flow of water from the tap. The very first forms of taps or valves were invented by the Early Egyptians and Greeks to control water flow and prevent flooding wherever there was a water line present. This idea sparked the invention of the modern tap in 1870 by a man called J.H Davis.
