• Weddings • 21st • Gift Packs • Corporate Gifts and more!

The excitement is mounting and the adrenalin pumping. It’s high tea time! The past 6 months have been a mad flurry of emailing and phoning to secure spon-sorship of prizes and goodie bag samples for the 430 ladies who are chomping at the bit to get to the event. I hope you’re one of them?

The theme/dress code of “African Queen” has everyone in a tizz. Ladies, relax! Think animal print...Think Winnie Madikezela Mandela...Think Beauty Ramaphelele... Anything goes, as long as it’s African and fabulous. The ladies will all be spoilt with an amazing (bulging) goodie bag, a gift from Elizabeth Arden and a lucky draw prize! That’s right – every single guest leaves with a prize over and above her goodie bag and gift. And it really is a lucky draw – anything from a handbag, to a weekend away, a spa voucher, meal vouchers, jewellery, shop-ping vouchers, photoshoot vouchers. In addition to this indulgent treat, the la-dies will also have a chance to win one of several awesome raffle packages for only R10 a ticket. Buy loads to increase your odds (I speak from experience)! And don’t even get me started on the free Amarula on arrival, free cappuccinos by the ever gorgeous Go Coffee man, shop-ping fit for an African Queen and food, glorious food compliments of the Eat Greek magicians. So if you did not get your hands on a ticket, send an email to me NOW with “Book me a seat for high tea 2013” in the subject line and I will be sure to contact you when the tickets go on sale (they sold out in 3 days for this year’s event).

I’m off to my fitting now with the fabulous Karen Monk Klijnstra – you wouldn’t expect anything less for an African queen!

Skin Worx Body Care Rich Skin Balm is an extra rich cream that intensively moisturises very dry and flaky skin by simply melting into the skin. Breast and Bottle?Recent draft regulations on foodstuffs for infants and young children aim to fur-ther encourage exclusive and prolonged breastfeeding amongst South African mothers. However, if promulgated in their current form, the draft regulations would not only limit the amount of information mothers will be able to access about in-fant nutrition and complementary foods, but could have the unintended conse-quence of increasing levels of malnutrition and potentially child morbidity and mor-tality, says the Infant Feeding Association (IFA).

“The IFA fully supports initiatives that ac-tively promote, increase and protect ex-clusive breastfeeding for at least the first six months of a baby’s life, followed by a diet of breastmilk and appropriate com-plementary foods for as long as possible thereafter...,” says Lisa Walker, IFA spokes-person.

At present, approximately 8% of South African babies are exclusively breastfed for the first six months of life with 31% fed a diet of both breastmilk and solid foods thereafter. However, says Walker, there are a number of reasons why it can be difficult for South African women to breastfeed ex-clusively and for a prolonged period of time as implied by the draft regulations.

“Many mums have to return to work af-ter just four months of maternity leave while others have health complications and are unable to breastfeed ...,” says Walker. Without access to information, says Walker, mothers may inadvertently include nutritionally inadequate products in their babies’ diets such as tea, rice milk, soya milk or whole milk, potentially exac-erbating the problem of malnutrition in South Africa. “International case studies suggest that regulations must strike a bal-ance between promoting exclusive and prolonged breastfeeding while allowing mums full access to scientific information on breastmilk substitutes via their health-care providers if it is to achieve a reduc-tion in malnutrition.”

Olympic GoldWhile Olympic fever still hangs in the air, go for gold with this Olympic Gold party! Set up plenty of fun challenges, test the kids’ skills, and let them win medals for their country. Let the games begin!

Invitations: Cut out award ribbons and write party details in permanent marker on the front. Collect pictures of Olympic winners (e.g. Chad Le Clos and Cameron van de Burgh), glue onto folded cards and write party details inside.

Three Medal Cake: Bake three round cakes, decorate with three different, bright coloured icings. Attach ribbons on top to simulate Olympic medals.

Prizes and Party Bags: Send the kids home with ribbons and trophies. Hand out Olympic winner posters and chocolate gold coin “medals”.

Costumes: Ask the guests to come dressed in athletic outfits or even athletic outfits in different countries’ colours.

Decorations: Buy small trophies to set on the table at each place setting. Use a large trophy as a centrepiece. Hang medals and prize ribbons from trees or the fence. Buy or make a collection of country flags and hang them outside. Make place mats from flags of different countries and assign a country to each contestant.

Games: • Races - Devise a number of track events based on the Olympics, e.g. sprinting, relays, long jump, even high jump if you have a mattress to use outdoors. • Swimming - if you have a swimming pool you could set up some safe, fun games like paddling across the pool using a boogie board and a frying pan, collecting as many golf balls from the bottom of the swimming pool in a specified time, or Marco Polo. • Team games - Volleyball or mini cricket.

These courses are suitable for the non-martial art-ist – for regular grans, moms and children. ogy, avoidance techniques and physical techniques. “I am determined to dispel the ‘fear of empowerment’ that one pictures with regards to self-defence,” said Mandy. Her courses are light-hearted, fun, and in-spiring. “My intention is not to give women a false sense of security. Learning defen-sive moves takes time but awareness can make ALL the difference to our daily lives immediately – awareness of your surround-ings, how your body can protect you, and where to hit your attacker.” Psychology is of vital importance, says Mandy, long be-fore you walk into an attack. She discusses body language and explains all physical attacks (arm grips, chokes, bear hugs and ground attacks). “By looking confident the risk of attack is reduced. Feeling the fear is normal but showing the fear increases the risk of attack. Learn to be assertive and confident!” Mandy is based in Pietermaritzburg and will travel anywhere to empower others. She is a member of the Chamber and Business Fighting Crime, and has been a passionate promoter of personal safety/basic self-defence for 10 years. “Awareness... Avoidance... and Action as a last resort.”

Out of My Paintbox – Colour In Competition Colour! Colour! And more colour. The most colour you will have seen in one place. “Out of my Paintbox”, the theme for the 37th Sunday Tribune Garden & Leisure Show, has created so much excitement amongst the exhibitors, that they cannot wait for you to see it all come together! The displays and creative ideas that are coming together are way beyond what was imagined and the anticipation is building. The show will take place at the Royal Showgrounds in Pietermaritzburg from 21 to 24 September. Acknowledged as the largest horticultural event of its kind – modelled on the Chelsea concept – in the southern hemisphere, the show includes up to 50 designer gardens, the quality (of most) ranking with the best in the world. The colour once again will be spectacular! Mums get your child to fill in a colour-in-by-number flyer and WIN BIG with the Garden Show. The competition is open to children under the age of eight years. Winners will be announced at the garden show and the judges’ decision is final. Prizes cannot be exchanged for money or vouchers. Entries close on 14 September.

How to enter: Download the flyer from www.mumsmail.com/site/pdf-downloads. Fill in the numbers and details. Submit your entry using one of the following three options: 1) Post it to P.O. Box 35457, Northway, 4016. 2) Scan it in colour and send it to [email protected]. 3) Hand it in at the entrance of the garden show.
