WARNING: Use only as directed by Health Official orPhysician. This is to be used in the event of a nuclearradiation emergency only. Potassium Iodide 130 protectsonly the thyroid gland from absorbing radioactive iodine.

INDICATIONS: Potassium Iodide 130 is a thyroid blockingsupplement that is used in a nuclear radiation emergency. The thyroid gland, which will use any iodine that is in aperson’s bloodstream, cannot tell the difference betweenradioactive and non-radioactive forms of iodine.

Because of this, the thyroid would rapidly absorb radioactiveiodine just as it does iodine from a person’s diet. Theradioactive iodine releases energy (radiation) that, in highconcentrations, can damage the cells of the thyroid gland. In some people, especially young children, this damagecan cause thyroid cancer or other diseases of the thyroidwithin a few years of the exposure.

WHO SHOULD USE IODINE: Children are the most susceptible to the dangerous effects of radioactive iodine. The FDA and the World Health Organization (WHO) recommend that children from newborn to 18 years ofage all take Potassium Iodide unless they have a knownallergy to iodine.

Women who are breastfeeding should also take PotassiumIodide, according to the FDA and WHO, to protect boththemselves and their breast milk. However, breastfeedinginfants should still be given the recommended dosage ofPotassium Iodide 130 to protect them from any radioactiveiodine that they may breathe in or drink in breast milk.

Young adults between the ages of 18 and 40 have a smallerchance of developing thyroid cancer or thyroid diseasefrom exposure to radioactive iodine than do children. However, the FDA and WHO still recommend that peopleages 18 to 40 take the recommended dose of PotassiumIodide. This includes pregnant and breast-feeding women, who should take the same dose as other young adults.

Adults over the age of 40 have the smallest chance ofdeveloping thyroid cancer or thyroid disease after an exposureto radioactive iodine, but they have a greater chance ofhaving an allergic reaction to the high dose of iodine in Potassium Iodide. Because of this, they are not recommended to take Potassium Iodide unless a very large dose of radioactive iodine is expected. People should listen to emergency management officials for recommendations after an incident.

WHO SHOULD NOT USE IODINE: The high concentrationof iodine in Potassium Iodide 130 can be harmful tosome people. People should not take Potassium Iodide 130if they:

• Have ever had thyroid disease (such as hyperthyroidism, thyroid nodules, or goiter).

• Know they are allergic to iodine (as in x-ray dye orshellfish).

• Have certain skin disorders (such as dermatitis herpeti-formis or urticaria vasculitis).

DOSING: Take Potassium Iodide 130 once every 24 hoursor as directed by public health officials. Do not take morethan one dose in 24 hours as more will not help you. Toomuch Potassium Iodide may increase the chances of sideeffects because the thyroid gland can only hold certainamounts of iodine.
