THE VILLAGE NEWS
BELMONT VILLAGE OF HUNTERS CREEK
NOVEMBER 2017
Ashley Marcellus, Executive Director
Thanksgiving Day is a time togather with family and friends togive thanks for our manyblessings. But to many people, its meaning has been lost.Turkey dinners, cranberries, candied yams, stuffing, mashedpotatoes, pumpkin pie, footballgames and family gatherings -are all commonly associatedwith our annual celebration ofgiving thanks.
Indeed, the staple foods of atraditional Thanksgiving dinnerwill not only feed your holidayappetite, but their nutrients canalso nourish your brain. Themeal’s centerpiece, turkey, contains an amino acid used toproduce dopamine, a chemicalthat improves mental alertnessand memory. The bread crustsoften used in stuffing are rich inantioxidants, and the side dishcranberries are also packed withthem. Research suggests that
antioxidants stave off brainaging and enhance cognitivefunction.
In America, we all know thatour Thanksgiving Day traditionbegan in August of 1620, whenthe Mayflower set sail fromSouthampton, England. Her 102passengers were to becomesome of the founding pilgrims ofour nation. More than half ofthese original pilgrims did notsurvive the first, long, bleak NewEngland winter. The survivorsbuilt homes, planted crops andbegan friendships with localIndian tribes. After reaping theirfirst harvest in the fall of 1621,the pilgrims dedicated a day forthanking God for the bountywith which He had blessed them.Their governor William Bradfordcommented, “Thus out of smallbeginnings greater things havebeen produced by His hand thatmade all things of nothing, andgives being to all thingsthat are.”
So, as we reflect on the manyreasons we have come togetherin this Belmont community, Ihope we can give thanks for ourjourney over the last severalyears and for God’s provision aswe came through a real stormthis September. Giving thanks isgood for the body and evenbetter for the soul. It is also theright thing to do.

A BIRTHDAY WISHWalter Peine, Belmont Village
resident, was born and raised inHouston and has been abaseball fan since he was oldenough to watch, having beento see at least 60 games. Heturns 102 on Oct. 20 and hassaid his wish is to see hisfavorite baseball team make anappearance in the 2017 WorldSeries.
“I’m glad to see the Astros inthe playoffs,” Peine said. “Theybelong there. This year’s team isthe strongest they have everhad, and they’ve got a chance togo to the World Series.”
Even before he became anAstros fan, Peine watchedHouston’s first minor leagueteam, the Houston Buffaloes, through a Colt 45 phase, a minorleague team that transitionedinto the Houston Astros.
He said now that he is retired,he watches it from the comfort
of his Belmont Village, HuntersCreek, apartment.
“I always took time off towatch the playoffs,” said Peine.“It’s one of my favorite times ofthe year. I plan to watch most ofthe games this year, too --especially when the Astrosplay.” - Channel 2 Houston
On October 14th, Mr. Peinewas asked to throw the firstpitch at the Astros 2nd PlayoffGame. Baseball can be asuperstitious game, but I thinkhis touch was pure magic.Astros won 2-1 and Waltercouldn’t be happier!
