But to many people, its meaning has been lost. Turkey dinners, cranberries, candied yams, stuffing, mashed potatoes, pumpkin pie, football games and family gatherings - are all commonly associated with our annual celebration of giving thanks. Indeed, the staple foods of a traditional Thanksgiving dinner will not only feed your holiday appetite, but their nutrients can also nourish your brain. The meal’s centerpiece, turkey, contains an amino acid used to produce dopamine, a chemical that improves mental alertness and memory. The bread crusts often used in stuffing are rich in antioxidants, and the side dish cranberries are also packed with them. Research suggests that antioxidants stave off brain aging and enhance cognitive function. In America, we all know that our Thanksgiving Day tradition began in August of 1620, when the Mayflower set sail from Southampton, England. Her 102 passengers were to become some of the founding pilgrims of our nation. More than half of these original pilgrims did not survive the first, long, bleak New England winter. The survivors built homes, planted crops and began friendships with local Indian tribes. After reaping their first harvest in the fall of 1621, the pilgrims dedicated a day for thanking God for the bounty with which He had blessed them. Their governor William Bradford commented, “Thus out of small beginnings greater things have been produced by His hand that made all things of nothing, and gives being to all things that are.” So, as we reflect on the many reasons we have come together in this Belmont community, I hope we can give thanks for our journey over the last several years and for God’s provision as we came through a real storm this September. Giving thanks is good for the body and even better for the soul. It is also the right thing to do. A BIRTHDAY WISHWalter Peine, Belmont Village

resident, was born and raised inHouston and has been abaseball fan since he was oldenough to watch, having beento see at least 60 games. Heturns 102 on Oct. 20 and hassaid his wish is to see hisfavorite baseball team make anappearance in the 2017 WorldSeries.

“I’m glad to see the Astros inthe playoffs,” Peine said. “Theybelong there. This year’s team isthe strongest they have everhad, and they’ve got a chance togo to the World Series.”

Even before he became anAstros fan, Peine watchedHouston’s first minor leagueteam, the Houston Buffaloes, through a Colt 45 phase, a minorleague team that transitionedinto the Houston Astros.

He said now that he is retired,he watches it from the comfort

of his Belmont Village, HuntersCreek, apartment.

“I always took time off towatch the playoffs,” said Peine.“It’s one of my favorite times ofthe year. I plan to watch most ofthe games this year, too --especially when the Astrosplay.” - Channel 2 Houston

On October 14th, Mr. Peinewas asked to throw the firstpitch at the Astros 2nd PlayoffGame. Baseball can be asuperstitious game, but I thinkhis touch was pure magic.Astros won 2-1 and Waltercouldn’t be happier!
