THE PAST PERFECT

I went to a party last week. Tom went to the party too. Tome went home at 10:30. So, when I arrived 11 o’clock, Tom wasn’t there.

When I arrived at the party, Tom had gone home.

Uses:- Talk about thing that happens before another.Signal words: When, before, after, because, by the time…Ex: When I got home, I found that someone had broken into my flat and had stolen my fur coat. After I had finished my housework, I watched TV.- It can be considered as the past tense of the present perfect. I’m not hungry. I have just had lunch.

I wasn’t hungry. I’d just had lunch.

Formation:(+) S+ HAD+ P2+…(-) S+ HADN’T + V+ …(?) HAD+ S+ V+…?

Use the verbs in brackets in the past perfect.
